  • The Path to Reconciliation | Sandi Boucher

Sandi Boucher is an indigenous Engagement & Empowerment Facilitator at SandiBoucher.com.

Sandi is an internationally recognized and much-loved speaker, thought leader, television host, seminar facilitator and best-selling author who has dedicated most of her life to Indigenous inclusion, empowerment, and engagement. Now her "puzzle pieces" have come together in "The PATH", Sandi's newest book that outlines the path Indigenous and non-Indigenous must take to get us to and through reconciliation.

Known for her passionate and empowering speaking style that speaks "to hearts, not minds", Sandi's audiences include elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools; colleges and universities; First Nation communities and agencies; mainstream municipalities and businesses, along with countless national, international, and regional conferences.
A proud member of Seine River First Nation in northern Ontario, Canada, Sandi has made Thunder Bay, Ontario her home for more than 25 years, a city nationally recognized for its anti-Indigenous racism. In Sandi's mind, this makes Thunder Bay the perfect place for "The PATH" to start.
Named both the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year and the Nishnawbe Aski Development Fund Business Woman of the Year in 2016, Sandi is committed to her audiences, leaving an impression wherever she speaks.

In this episode Sandi shares a part of Canadian history that many people have never heard about, and most that have, don’t understand what really happened. Beginning in 1880, the Government of Canada removed Indigenous children, beginning at the age of 4, and forced them into residential schools. Believe it or not, this practice carried on for 100 years! In some families five generations of children were separated from their families, in what Macleans Magazine called “a flat-out mission of assimilation into white society.” https://www.macleans.ca/society/why-our-kids-need-to-learn-about-residential-schools/

I consider myself to be socially aware and educated. I mean I do have a degree in History from the University of Toronto. Canada’s largest and one of the most respected universities in the country. How is it possible that I didn’t know about this until very recently. It’s impossible to believe, but it is true.

Finding a path to reconciliation between an indigenous community that has been so badly wronged, and the broader Canadian population, including a growing number of immigrants, is a seemingly impossible task. Not for Sandi Boucher. Sandi talks about the importance of everyone understanding the social lens we use to view the world, and is on a mission to educate people on boths sides of the equation and help them contribute to and find reconciliation.

  • Solving Big Problems | Nika Moeimi

Nika Moeini is the director of operations of the Gen Z Foundation, CEO and Founder of Moeini Marketing, CEO and Founder of the Positivity Boss,  a published author, and recently became the youngest ever Recipient of Canada’s Future Foreign Policy Makers.

At first glance this energetic young woman is doing a bit of everything. But there is a method to her “madness.” Nika likes to think of her work as focused on two kinds of impact: larger global impact and more individual level impact.

For global impact, she recently finished a term at Global Affairs Canada as a gender equality policy analyst. She also hosts the Seven Trillion dollar podcast, which focuses on innovative solutions to address the funding gap in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In case you can’t guess, Nika doesn’t think small.

She is also the author of International Relations for young worldchangers, a book all about how youth can create careers in international affairs, the Ottawa lead with league of Innovators, a hootsuite backed charity that promotes entrepreneurship to young people 15-25. As the Founder of The Positivity Boss, Nika helps young entrepreneurs develop the right mindset for success by overcoming their limiting beliefs and rediscovering their sense of self worth. She does this through individual coaching and, yes, another podcast, called the Young & Ambitious Podcast. Her show features the personal growth journey’s of inspiring youth. In business she’s also a high ticket closer helping coaches and influencers close their high ticket packages on the phone, and a digital marketing strategist helping entrepreneurs generate leads on LinkedIn and YouTube.

I caught up with Nika a few months ago, although I have no idea how she had the time to speak with me!

  • The Importance of Being Intentional | Amy Mohr

Amy Mohr is the Founder and CEO of All Elements Wellness where she helps individuals and organizations transform their relationship with themselves, one audience at a time.

She is a professionally trained meditation Instructor, wellness Consultant, and Psychotherapist. She is also a survivor of severe and long term childhood trauma. Amy was physically, mentally, and sexually abused by multiple family members for 18 years. Growing up in a tiny, remote community, Amy did not even know what child protection services were.

The first time she tried to run away, she fled to her Aunt in a nearby city. Her Aunt listened to her stories, and returned her to her “family.” At the age of 18 Amy walked away from that destructive world, and never went back.

Now 36, she is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh.

Amy believes, and knows first hand, that it is truly through some of our greatest adversities that we can discover great strength within ourselves to overcome and walk toward the things that matter, while letting go of the things that don't.

She found the good in her struggles in overcoming her childhood trauma (she calls it a gift) and has developed a deep understanding of human behavior, of what works (and what doesn't). It as also helped her to deepen her ability to be present and attentive to herself and others, and to ultimately understand the differences between what enables systems (individuals, relationships, communities, and businesses) to be well as opposed to breeding dysfunction.

She has been a self-employed psychotherapist for 8 years  and utilizes innovative approaches to treat complex issues related to trauma, addictions, eating disorders and grief and loss. Her unique style blends complementary healing techniques with traditional psychotherapy modalities and is focused on attending to and treating the whole person: mind, body, emotions and spirit.

In this episode she explains how her personal experiences and her expertise in treating individual clients as a psychotherapist apply to doing work with businesses and restructuring company culture.
“Well, to put it simply, they aren't much different. Yes, how businesses and employees operate outwardly may be different, but the internal mechanisms and drivers for individual behaviors in businesses are all the same. Your employees are driven by their thoughts, feelings, and urges (all internal processes). For instance, if we allow ourselves to be driven by fear in a personal relationship, we may withhold information that could be vital to the development and strength of that relationship. If an employee is driven by fear of his boss' rejection of their proposal and withholds this information, the business could suffer from the innovation, creativity and potential benefit of the idea.
It is all about what energy (via our thoughts, feelings or urges) we allow to be drivers in our actions as individuals, employees, and businesses. A business entity itself could have unintentionally been founded on control, fear, greed, power...which inherently will perpetuate and construct those drivers in workplace culture, productivity, and service delivery if not deconstructed and addressed. Energies like fear, anger, greed, control, pride will only lead to destructive results on a small or larger scale, albeit they still are powerful forces. Managers driven by pride, fear and control to lead their subordinates will not produce constructive results. We know this. What we struggle with is how to deconstruct this negative and get to the root issues that are manifesting it, resolve those issues, and invite and implement constructive energies.
Energies like courage, compassion, neutrality, reasoning will lead to constructive results and there are ways we can learn to embody and act on these forces to support a functional workplace system. These concepts are supported by a variety of sources, one of which is in David Hawkin's research in the book, "Power vs Force".”
In her work with individuals, families and businesses, Amy is focused on identifying and addressing the root issues to problems, not just treating "symptoms". There are many approaches and modalities that just treat symptoms and surface level issues. That’s not Amy’s style.

  • Julian Smit Gig Economy = Unlimited Opportunity

Julian Smit is the Director and Senior Producer at J.D. Nevins Communications Inc., a virtual digital communications agency with expertise in emerging sales and marketing strategies and technologies.

He is also the Executive Director and Host of BIYF Marketing which is a YouTube channel and iTunes Podcast, dedicated to providing weekly sales and marketing advice for businesses and marketers.

After working in a number of different jobs, Julian found his niche in digital marketing, and spent almost 10 years working in the corporate world. Changes in the corporate structure of his employer, left Julian and many of his co-workers looking for a job. His transition to the freelance job market happened almost by chance. He was not able to find full time employment, but he did find a number of short term gigs. Along the way he started to appreciate the benefits of working from home, on his own schedule.

Seeing a bigger opportunity Julian created a virtual digital marketing agency where he draws on his growing network of global experts to provide top notch service to a growing list of clients, including Bank of Montreal.

In this episode Julian shares he thoughts on the future of the digital marketing sector, offers advice to anyone interested in taking advantage of this growing opportunity, and the rationale behind his podcast.

When he lost his job, Julian could have become discouraged. Instead he ignored the naysayers that view freelancing as a poor substitute for a real job, and eventually created his dream business, career, and life.

I know you’ll enjoy Julian’s honest, direct, communication style and his obvious joy of life.

  • Action Is Always Possible | Lousin Mehrabi

Born in The Netherlands and living in Paris, Lousin Mehrabi was on the fast track to success in the world of finance, when the 2008 subprime crisis changed her perception of career success in a big way.

There was a suicide in the company she was working for, and she saw first hand how quickly employees could become disposable assets. (According to OECD the number of unemployed persons in the OECD area increased from 34 million in 2008 to 42.1 million in 2010 – the most rapid rise in OECD unemployment since the early 1990s. And according to the New York Times job losses in the U.S. increased by 2.6 million people in 2008 alone).

She continued her career in finance for several more years, but found herself longing for more in life. And in 2016 she made a brave decision. She quit her well paid job, invested some time and money in professional development and and started her own coaching practice

In her words she was living her dream life and career. Then life hit her with the biggest hardship she have ever faced when she learned that her six year old son had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The doctor told her “ this is a 100% fatal disease for which there is no cure”. She was told her son would be in a wheelchair somewhere between the age of 8-12, and that the average lifespan was between 25-30.

When she asked the doctor what they could do, he replied, “there’s nothing you can do.” Lousin didn’t accept that answer.

She knew that a warmer climate would be good for her son. The warmth of the sun, being able to go to the beach, would improve his quality of life immensely.  So without hesitation, the family moved to Dubai, where she now lives. I caught up with he this fall when she was back home in the Netherlands for a visit. This is an inspiring story about facing adversity head on, taking control of your own destiny, and ignoring the naysayers. Contact Lousin:
