  • #53 How to Set Goals for a New Year

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are going to talk about how to set goals for a new year.

I absolutely LOVE the freshness of a new year, with the weeks and months spread before us like a blank slate, brimming with possibility. I make it an annual practice to sit with the Lord to hear from Him and create some goals together for the coming year.

Now I'm fully aware that there are some people whose eyes brighten when they hear the word 'goals' and there are others who experience that sinking feeling at the mere thought of crafting goals, and of course there are many people in between.

Regardless of where you are on that continuum, having an idea of where you are headed is always helpful in getting there. If we don't know what we are working towards, we may wander aimlessly, wasting time and energy on things that don't help us get to where we want to be. Goals help us move towards the destination.

I absolutely love goal-setting and designing my days around intentional movement towards those goals, and on this podcast episode, I'm going to share with you how I set goals for a new year.

So grab a cup of coffee, your Bible, and all your goals and join me on the pages of God's Word.

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, I am sharing 10 lessons God taught me in 2023.

We are all learning and growing, aren't we? God is continually stretching us, teaching us, and transforming us. So it's good to make a regular habit of reflection on all the ways He's worked in your life. The end of a year is a great time to do this. As you listen to how God has been teaching me over the past year, I encourage you to reflect on your own journey with God in 2023. Celebrate the ways He's shown up in your life and marked you for eternity.

  • #50 What To Do When Your Faith is Attacked (Isaiah 34-39)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 34-39, which is week 7 in your study called A Holy God. This is our last week in this study! And there is a bit of a surprise in the last few chapters of the first part of Isaiah. After 35 chapters of poetry, we stumble across historical narrative. Isaiah tells the story of King Hezekiah during the time when the Assyrians were coming against Jerusalem. Hezekiah's story of his enemy seeking to destroy the city has much to teach us about the strategies of our enemy as he seeks to destroy us. When your faith is being attacked, you can follow the example of Hezekiah in running to your God and standing firm on His promises.

  • #49 How to Avoid Empty Religion, Complacency and Misplaced Trust (Isaiah 29-33)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 29-33, which is week 6 in your study called A Holy God. When we read through the story of Israel in the Old Testament, we often shake our heads at how rebellious and unbelieving they were. That is, until we realize that we are not much different. We too can fall into empty religion and complacency, and we too can misplace our trust. Israel's story is our story. Let's chat about how to avoid these spiritual pitfalls and instead learn to trust in and wait on God.

  • #48 The Secret to Having Perfect Peace (Isaiah 24-28)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 24-28, which is week 5 in your study called A Holy God. This section of Isaiah is often called Isaiah's Little Apocalypse. Although it contains descriptions of coming judgement, it also includes a glimpse of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, the lavish feast God will one day make for His people.

In the heart of these chapters, we are graciously given the key to having perfect peace. Let's find out what it is!

  • #47 When God Makes All Things Right (Isaiah 13-23)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 13-23, which is week 4 in your study called A Holy God. In these chapters, Isaiah turns his attention from Israel to the surrounding nations to pronounce judgment on them for their wickedness.

We like to proclaim that God is a God of love, which is absolutely, wonderfully true. But He is also a God of justice and wrath, and He cannot turn a blind eye to sin. And if you think about it, we are glad for this. We want God to stop evildoers and make all things right. Only God is perfect in His judgment. Let's be intentional about understanding all aspects of God's character, including the side of Him that rightly pours out punishment on all wrong.

  • #46 How to Fully Rely on God (Isaiah 9-12)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 9-12, which is week 3 in your study called A Holy God. I'm guessing this week's biblical text got all up in your business. It sure was convicting for me! Isaiah challenged God's people to rely on Him alone, but sadly they often turned to other nations for help. Before we condemn them too quickly, we need to examine our own hearts. How often do we turn to lesser things instead of leaning fully on the God who created and redeemed us? And all the while God is inviting us to turn to Him for strength and deliverance. He is so worthy of our trust. Let's learn together how to fully rely on the God of the universe.

  • #45 Undone by Glory (Isaiah 5-8)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover Isaiah 5-8, which is week 2 in your study called A Holy God. This week you read one of the most well-known chapters in all of Isaiah, and one of the most stunning. Isaiah was given a vision of the throne room of God. He saw the Lord, high and lifted up, and he was completely undone.

This is my prayer for us as we study Isaiah – that we would see God high and lifted up, in all His glory. I'm praying that our eyes would be opened, our minds would be expanded, and our hearts would be enlarged by God's majesty and power. And then when God calls us to something, we will respond like Isaiah: "Here I am. Send me."

  • #44 Rebellion, Empty Religion and the Branch (Isaiah 1-4)

During today's conversation on Scripture & Story, we are continuing in our series on the book of Isaiah!

Today we cover the first four chapters of the book, which really set the stage for the rest of the book. God's people had strayed from Him a thousand times - rebellion, pride, idolatry, empty religion, oppressing the marginalized and more. Their hearts were far from Him. And although there would be consequences for their sin, God promised restoration and redemption for those who turned back to Him.

We too stray from God in a thousand ways. Our hearts are prone to wander, our minds distracted, and our actions often betray what we say we believe. But God is merciful and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

When we see ourselves in the children of Israel on the pages of Isaiah, we can know that our God is the same God today as He was then. He promises redemption in Jesus.
