The first opposition (Exodus 5-6)
“Who is the Lord?” (Exodus 5:2)
God repeatedly tells him. Exodus 7:17. See also Exodus 7:5; 8:10, 22; 9:14, 29; 11:7; 14:4, 18.
God will trample Pharaoh’s pride. See Exodus 9:16, quoted in Romans 9:17. Also compare II Chronicles 32:13-19.
Proverbs 30:9
God deals with a fledgling faith (Exodus 5:20-6:13)
Pharaoh forced the people to gather their own straw for the bricks. The people had seen the signs (Exodus 4:30-31), but this added burden was enough to cause the people to turn on Moses and Aaron (Exodus 5:20-25).
God’s response:
Patience: He does not punish Moses or the people at this point.
He provides His word as assurance. He explains (again) what the future holds.
“By my name, LORD” (Exodus 6:3)
God had appeared to the patriarchs as “God Almighty” (Hebrew: El Shaddai), but now emphasizes a new name: “LORD” (Hebrew: Yahweh).
In Exodus, God repeatedly says, “I am the LORD” and refers to Israel as His people. Exodus marks a turning point in Israel’s relationship with God as He takes special care of them.
It’s remarkable that in comparison to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses, God has provided “something better for us” (Hebrews 4:10).

II Corinthians 6:1-18
II Corinthians 6:2 – The Holy Spirit here applies this prophecy from Isaiah to the gospel. Now is the time for salvation, not some future time as some groups such as Premillenialists may argue.
II Corinthians 6:3 – If Paul had not lived what he preached, it would have reflected poorly on what he preached. The same is true for us.
II Corinthians 6:11-13 – The Corinthians were restrained by their own desires. Paul asks them to open their hearts to him and his teaching as he had opened his heart to them. Many in the religious world today are in the same position of being restrained by their own desires.
II Corinthians 6:14-15 – See I Corinthians 5. This is not saying you can’t have dealings with unbelievers. That would make it impossible to live in the world. This is specifically talking about being tied to unbelievers in spiritual matters.
II Corinthians 6:16 – Christians are the temple of God.
II Corinthians 6:17 – Some try to apply this to marriage to advise against marrying an unbeliever, but marriage is not in the context.

Exodus 3-4
John 9:28 – Moses had an amazing legacy by the time of the New Testament.
Acts 7:29-34 – Stephen summarizes Moses’ life.
The reluctance of Moses (Exodus 3:11-4:17)
Exodus 3:11 – “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?”
Exodus 3:13 – They may say, “What is His name?”
Exodus 4:1 – They may say, “The Lord has not appeared to you.”
Exodus 4:10 – “I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”
Exodus 4:13 – “Send the message by whomever you will.”
Do we have the same hurdles of reluctance when it comes to serving God today? What might be running through our heads:
Why me? I’m a nobody.
I don’t know what to say about God.
How do I prove any of this? What if people start asking about the reliability of Bible manuscripts and evidence for God and stuff like that?
I’m not good at this. I never think of the right way to say things.
Somebody else could do this better.
Consider the personal growth of Moses through the book of Exodus.
Exodus 2:14-15; Acts 7:25 – first time leaving Egypt
Exodus 14:13; Hebrews 11:27 – confidently leading Israel out
“I AM has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14)
Hebrew הָיָה (hayah) means “to exist in the absolute sense.” Compare Hosea 1:9. See also Hebrews 13:8; Revelation 1:4, 9. Jesus made “I AM” statements in John 8:24, 25, 58; 13:19; 18:5.

II Corinthians 5:10-21
II Corinthians 5:10 – “All” here is all who are of an accountable mind.
II Corinthians 5:14 – All people of an accountable mind sin and die spiritually. This verse is talking about that spiritual death. Calvinists have a problem with this verse because they do not believe Christ died for all.
II Corinthians 5:16 – We no longer recognize people according to their sins once they are in Christ.
II Corinthians 5:17-19 – See Romans 4:6-7. This explains how God comes to not impute sins to a man.
II Corinthians 5:21 – Jesus did not become a sinner. He was made to be the sin sacrifice for us. He was the sacrifice for us so that we could be righteous before God.

Exodus beings with Israel multiplying in Egypt. The Egyptians put the Israelites under hard labor.
Moses is born in Egypt. His life is divided into three 40-year sections:
1st 40 years – raised as an Egyptian (Exodus 2:11; Acts 7:23)
2nd 40 years – shepherd in Midian (Exodus 2:15; 7:7; Acts 7:29-30)
3rd 40 years – leader of Israel (Deuteronomy 34:7)
The book of Exodus can also be divided into 3 sections:
Egypt and the ten plagues (Exodus 1:1-12:32)
The Exodus! (Exodus 12:33-18:27)
Mount Sinai, the law, and the tabernacle (Exodus 19-40)
God is faithful!
Genesis 12:2, 7; Exodus 1:5, 7. Notice how many Israelites there were later! Exodus 12:37; 38:26
Exodus begins to fulfill the land promise. Acts 7:17.
II Peter 3:8-11
“But the midwives feared God” (Exodus 1:15-22)
Are the midwives lying in Exodus 1:19? Did God reward them for lying in Exodus 1:20? Consider also Joshua 2:3-6 and Hebrews 11:31.
It’s possible that God was rewarding them for their fear and reverence without specifically approving of their lies (if they were indeed lying).
“He became her son” (Exodus 2:10)
Moses understood his identity as a Hebrews and a deliverer. (Exodus 2:11-14; Acts 7:23-28)
Hebrews 11:23-29 – Moses acted by faith!
“Who made you a prince or a judge over us?” (Exodus 2:14)
Acts 7:35-39, 51-53 – The people in Stephen’s day rejected Jesus just like the Hebrews rejected Moses. We must be careful not to make the same mistake!

II Corinthians 4:14-5:10
II Corinthians 4:18 – Everything that can be seen is temporary and will be destroyed. We are to focus our attention on things that are eternal.
II Corinthians 5:1 – We are not told exactly what will happen between our earthly death and the resurrection. The parable Jesus tells of Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31) implies that there will be some state of peaceful existence after death for those who obey God.
II Corinthians 5:5 – The “we” in this passage seems to specifically refer to Paul and the apostles. The principles in most of this chapter apply to all Christians, though.
