When an individual knows the truth of the gospel, he either goes on to believe or he falls back into apostasy, and an apostate is one who rejects the truth, having known it. I will consider the believer who moves forward in the gospel in this sermon.

I would like to make the following proposition: We have God’s loving assurance because we doubt and we despair. As I consider our text, the writer of Hebrews knew that many of the Jewish brethren were suffering from persecution. Many were contemplating leaving Christianity and going back to a ritualistic system of dead works and faith. Some were even false believers crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding Him up to contempt. As the writer of Hebrews seeks to move his audience from doubt and despair, I trust our text will do the same for us.

Physical laziness effects a person’s station in life, but spiritual laziness can effect both the physical and spiritual aspects of one’s life. In the text that I’ll be considering today, we’ll look at spiritual laziness and its consequences. We will see the Hebrew Christians being warned against spiritual laziness, perhaps we aren’t so far removed from the danger of spiritual laziness and sluggishness ourselves. My proposition is: Because we are prone to spiritual laziness, Jesus our High Priest secures our spiritual maturity.

Israel failed to enter God’s rest of the promise land because they presumed on God’s kindness and had their hearts hardened by sin. Therefore, as faithful Christians, we need to exhort and encourage one another to hold firmly to our confession until the end so that an evil, unbelieving heart will not lead any of us away from faith in our living God.

Consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest who has performed a superior sacrifice on your behalf, and hold on to your hope in Jesus, the One who is greater than Moses as the Son and architect of God’s house. For, Jesus is worthy of your faith, have faith in Him and do not give up.
