If there is ungodliness there will always be unrighteousness. But the tragedy is that the civil authorities irrespective of which political party is in power—all seem to be governed by relativist psychology rather than by the Scriptures. They all are convinced that they can deal with unrighteousness directly, in and by itself. But that is impossible. Unrighteousness is always the result of ungodliness; and the only hope of getting back any measure of righteousness into life is to have a revival of godliness that starts in the family and parenting. That is precisely what the Apostle is saying to the Ephesians and to ourselves. For Paul, he starts in the home. He first gives instructions to wives and husbands. He then says: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

The Christian understanding of marriage is: It is a sacred, covenantal union of one man and one woman formed when the two swear before God an oath of lifelong loyalty and love to one another, the sign and seal of which is had in intimate consummation. If man’s chief purpose as the image of God is to glorify God and enjoy our relationship with Him forever, clearly this is the chief purpose of marriage. As we have seen the apostle Paul explains in Eph. 5:21-33 that the marriage relationship is to be patterned after that of Christ and the church. An inference to be drawn from that is: a husband and wife are to display in their relationship the nature of our relationship with Christ, our divine Husband, the Bridegroom.

Those of us who said “no” to my reflective questions such as: No, Jesus Christ’s headship never has been hard for me? No, I Have never felt devalued in submitting to Jesus Christ as my Lord? No, I have never felt insecure or insignificant under the leadership of Jesus Christ? No, I have never found Him to be unloving and uncaring? If you are a husband, then may I ask you, has your wife felt any of these under your headship?

As Paul addresses the subject of submitting, he tells the center piece of the home, the wife, to submit to her own husband, as to the Lord. Paul moves from the wife to the husband, who is seen from Paul’s perspective as the God-given authority with biblical responsibility, to lead as the head of the family. His headship is metaphorically compared to Christ’s headship over the church, which is Christ’s body. Headship and body is key for the apostle Paul.

I believe and know God blesses His people when they are faithful and obedient to the Scriptures. Yet, there is a refusal to submit and obey husbands from women from all walks of life with many being in the church. In fact, many women are leaving out the word “obey” from the marriage vows. Even worst, some pastor believes that the word obey should be left out of the vows! The apostle Paul understood the role of women and his advocacy regarding the role of the wife was radically different from what the Greek and Roman cultures practiced.
