  • Using Your Artistry To Promote Visibility: Featuring Tia Williams

This week on See It To Be It, we talk to writer and director Tia Williams about her experience developing her web series "Gentrified." Set in Austin, TX, the series follows three millenials encountering personal hardships while experiencing the affects of gentrification. Williams reminds us that through art, one could help people gain more understanding of difficult issues in their community.

Williams on the effectiveness of explaining issues through character driven stories:

_3:12 ”For me, I always think that if people have or can see exactly what's happening, it's easier to tie to someone emotionally versus just constantly talk about stats. Instead of turning people into numbers, we get to truly understand the nature of what another human beings going through.”

Williams on the usage of terms like "Diversity" and "Inclusion" in professional settings:

_6:29 “To me, what it feels like is that diversity and inclusion have become buzzwords. It's thrown out there. So that there's this facade of, ‘Hey, we're diverse,’ you know, ‘we're on track.’ But internally, those changes aren't really happening.”

Williams on what inspires her to keep filmmaking:

_7:47 “It's more so about. How can I help the community? What can I do to give back? How can I use my artistry to be someone else's voice? And that's more so what was important to me.”

  • Mastering Yourself and Overcoming Adversity: Featuring Denise Hamilton

Feeling self-sabotaged? Not sure what to do to make the next step towards something greater? WatchHerWork Founder Denise Hamilton begs women asking these questions to first answer her's:

Are you immersing yourself in your craft or waiting for someone to give you the opportunity?

Hamilton created the digital learning platform WatchHerWork in hopes to create a more accessible space for women wanting to learn new skills or ask for advice. It is her goal to help women recognize their gifts, sharpen their skills and gain the courage to overcome and thrive.

Hamilton on the importance of having mentors from all backgrounds:

8:16_"..Let's be honest. We marginalize women after 45 right? We stopped asking them questions. We kind of pushed them to the side, and let's be honest, those are the women that know where the bodies are buried. They know what's really going on, so how do we access them?"

Hamilton on becoming the hero of your own story:

12:28_"The bottom line is you got to decide, are you going to be the princess or the hero?
Right? And I want to be the hero of my story. And we have a whole bunch of women who have been socialized to be a damsel in distress, to sit in the tower and wait for the Prince to save them. And I'm like, Rapunzel, honey: it was your hair. You can be yourself. Get out of the tower."

Hamilton on the current generation of perfectionists:

14:47_"I think one of the most toxic challenges, specifically of our time is we have the worst case of "comparison-itis" I think I've ever seen. I'll be 50 in October and I have never seen it this bad. I'm a keynote speaker, so I speak all over the country and afterwards we'll have women that are waiting to talk to me, you know, and share comments on what I said in my speech. And I gotta tell you 60% of them, "I'm afraid to start." "What if people judge me?" "I don't know how to do it perfectly yet." "I'm waiting to get all my ducks in a row."- And it's like, listen, nobody starts at A, you got to start at a D and work your way up to a C and then push to that B minus, and then like that's the way this goes. And we have, I feel like a whole generation that's waiting for perfection. It's like, get out there, like do it."

Hamilton on breaking societal expectations to help recognize yourself:

18:11_" But we'd been socialized via martyr, these self-sacrificing, put everybody else first. I believe firmly. If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

  • ATTN LADIES You Don't Have To "Fit In" : Featuring Andrea Seemayer

A.Lynn Founder, Andrea Seemayer, takes us through the ins and outs of the fashion industry and talks battles she conquered to make her size inclusive apparel company. From acknowledging the major inequality between sizes that are available in women's and men's apparel to talking about the importance of having a team, Seemayer's tenacious spirit has the ability to inspire those feeling uncomfortable.

Seemayer on the power that conscious apparel design can do for women:

_11:09: "But I think that giving someone clothes that they can walk out of the door and nothing squeezing too tight, all the lengths are right, they don't have to fidget, they can be confident that it's going to stay on, it's going to be proper all day. Not causing them to have to hide to fix something gives (them) more time on what you really need to focus on the day and less worry on (their) clothes. And you just feel a little bit sexier when it fits right, and you don't have to blame your body for something because I think we tend to blame ourselves when something goes awry instead of blaming the garment."

Seemayer's tips for having your input heard in a male dominated professional enviornment:

_13:20: "So you really have to speak up and be loud and stand up for yourself. Very rarely, if it's a room full of men, do they come and talk to the few women standing in the room. They're going to go to what looks normal to them...so you really have to build up your confidence and be your biggest cheerleader because certainly none of them are going to be."

Seemayer on her life motto, "Teamwork makes the dream work:"

_16:40: " It's really hard, so I always tell people to make sure they're surrounded with support, whether that's employees, a team, or even just a supportive loved one or community. You need people to be able to succeed. Never try to take it all on yourself because you're not going to be the best company you can be if you think that you can do it all."

  • Woman Challenging The Status Quo: Featuring Genecia Alluora

Former beauty queen, Genecia Alluora, is challenging the status quo of what women in Southeast Asia believe they can accomplish. Between juggling household duties and busy family schedules, Genecia believes women need the tools and support to find their sense of self to make their dreams a reality. In this episode, Melinda Garvey talks with the mentor about how to help ourselves be open to opportunity and break the glass ceiling.

On the top three limiting beliefs that Genecia believes is holding women back:

_8:40: "... Number one is they have forgotten completely who they are and their dreams, and that really do(es) affect it. Because to them by taking care of their family, in our culture is family first, they have completely forgotten about self-care.."

On the power of Soul Rich Woman, Genecia's company for interpersonal networking:

_10:15: "When these women get their soul awakened they already know there is a possibility of having financial independence or freedom through other ways. Their minds open up. But the people around them are not opened up yet."
