SEEing to Lead episodes

  • How Are You

How often do we ask that question with no interest in the answer? How often do we answer it knowing the person who asked doesn't really want to hear our answer?

We can create more of an authentic focus on social emotional learning by taking small steps to increase empathy. Take the challenge in the video by taking a small step today.

Remember that everyone is on their own journey that continues long after you have stopped seeing them. Make that time a bright, positive moment. You'll be amazed at the difference you can make.

    Who am I?

I’ve been an educator in Massachusetts for 23 years.  I’m finishing my 16th year as a building leader.  I’m a teacher centered Principal and passionate about continuous improvement and the idea that success is not a destination, but a process. I’m active on social media, vlog about continuous improvement on a weekly basis, and wrote a book also called SEEing to Lead as a way to help everyone improve education as a whole by promoting my “just cause”: improving the educational experience for as many people as possible by being purposeful, acting with integrity, and building character.

  • Everyone is Unique with David Shultz

Dave is a former schoolteacher with 16 years of classroom experience.  Dave also has 20 years of teaching experience in untraditional settings. He has a bachelor's degree and two masters degrees in education.  While in the classroom, he was certified as a music teacher.  He taught Band, Orchestra, Choir, and general music at all levels, preschool through college.  Other items he has taught include swimming, Microsoft Office, SAP, Contract Management, Soft Skills, Customer Relationship Management, Presentation Skills, and Computer Skills.  He comes from a family of teachers. At one point in time, there were 13 active professional teachers in the family.  His spare time is all about his kids.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Swimming lessons are a good example of the need to differentiate based on levels of readiness.
    • The most important aspect of supporting teachers is having resources available.
    • Schools should be passing strategies to families for learning to continue at home.
    • You engage people by reaching them on an emotional level.
    • We need to examine exactly what we are measuring with grades. They are a snapshot in time and reflect much more than what is actually occurring with student learning.
    • We have to make use of periodic reviews if we are to expect students to be able to retain information over the long term.
    • Use technology in a way that has students creating and solving problems rather than just extensions of traditional methods.
    • We have to teach students how to fail and fail correctly without punishing them with grades. It is how you handle failure that makes the difference. The YouTube example for learning.

  • Simple Acts of Service

How often have we slowed down the pace of our lives enough to notice the small acts of service we can perform for others?

Those small acts for us often have a larger impact on those who receive them. All we have to do is notice what we can do for others to make a large, positive impact on them and eventually our whole community.

There is a challenge in the video. Start small and then build up to multiple acts. Whether they are small gifts or physical help they create small ripples that grow larger over time. Our actions influence the actions of others. Let's make sure they are positive.

  • The Life Skills handbook with Shari Pierce

Shari Pierce was born and raised in Yonkers, New York and was a special educator for the Yonkers Public Schools for thirty-three years. For twenty-three of those years, she worked with middle and high-schoolers with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. Following her retirement, she wrote a book, "Life Skills: A Handbook for Parents & Teachers of the Intellectually Disabled" which gives gentle advice about educating this most special population and emphasizes collaboration among parents, teachers, administrators and support staff. She is also the sibling of an adult with developmental disabilities.

Shari received her B.S. in Special Education from New York University and an M.A. in Learning Disabilities from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was named a Leader in Education by the JCY - Westchester Community Partners in 2012.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Shari's book is organized in a way that serves as a desk reference.
    • Learning takes place in many different ways, including outside of the classroom, and is often messy when it's authentic.
    • Kids are kids and good teaching is good teaching. We can all learn from what our colleagues are doing in different classrooms.
    • Administrators can support their teachers through understanding, listening, and funding.
    • It's important for administrators to spend time in sub-separate classrooms getting to know the students.
    • Inclusion starts with small steps that lead to greater opportunities.
    • It's important for students to know that they are loved but even more important to feel as if they are valued.

  • Around, Over, or Through

Nobody is perfect. Situations, even less often.

We will always run across stumbling blocks or barriers to our success. When we do we have three choices we can make instead of giving in and not reaching our goal.

We can go around by finding another solution to the problem. We can go over by persevering until we can overcome by outlasting what is in our way. We can go through by learning from our mistakes and failures and improving the skill set we need to be successful.

What we can't do is accept failure as our final destination.

  • Emotional Freedom Techniques With Kathleen Weber

Kathleen Weber is a former school counselor of 25 years and is a Certified, Accredited Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) Practitioner.  She is passionate about bringing tools to educators and students that help to regulate emotions and calm the nervous system.  Prior to using these techniques, she felt like something was missing from her toolbox.  Students would return with the same issue time and time again, or they would return with the same theme, but different players. It wasn't until she learned how to use EFT that she felt she was truly making a difference.  In fact, she loved it so much that she started her own business to support educators experiencing burnout through individual sessions and to offer professional development for teachers, school counselors, and other school staff to bring these techniques into the classroom.

    Key Takeaways

    • EFT techniques, help us sit and unpack or comfort our emotions by relieving stress in our body and nervous system.
    • EFT is centered on severing the tie between our emotional reaction and the event that occurred.
    • Emotional dysregulation stops our ability to connect with the thinking part of our brain, therefore making talk therapy less effective in the moment.
    • EFT isn't about avoiding triggers, but instead moving through them and being able to help ourselves deal with them.
    • EFT is a gentle, personal technique that is incredibly powerful.
    • There is a demonstration of a regulation technique! It is called “Tap and Breath”

  • Creating Sustainable Change With Dan Kelley

Daniel Kelley is an Associate Teaching Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Rhode Island. He previously served as the principal of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, RI. During his tenure, he successfully implemented sustainable change initiatives that profoundly impacted the school’s learning culture.

Dan’s contributions to education extend to national leadership roles as well. He served as the president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) during the 2017-2018 school year and was a member of the NASSP Board of Directors for five years. His broad experience in education includes positions as a high school assistant principal, a high school and middle school special education teacher, and a middle school math and science teacher. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, he was named the Rhode Island Secondary Principal of the Year in 2012.

    Key Takeaways

    • Securing excellent, early mentors is key to entering leadership. It’s essential to tap those we see as having leadership qualities  early and then give them small leadership opportunities.
    • Leaders need to be very conscious of the language they are using around others so they do not discourage people from moving into the position.
    • There is a critical need for a wider and increased range of people entering leadership roles.
    • Successful change isn’t always about “buy in”, but sometimes the readiness of those implementing the change.
    • Grading is a transactional process that is used to control behavior rather than validate understanding.
    • It's not our job to prepare students for bad practices happening at the next level.
    • You need to spend extra time with veterans who have been practicing the same way for years.
    • Work to meet teachers where they are by going to their classrooms and using different spaces than the main office.

  • You First With Chris Jones

We often get caught up in our schedules as we move through the day. Before we know it, days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months. Suddenly we realize that there is a feeling of being unfulfilled. That feeling is an effect of not making time for ourselves as we stay busy making sure we are working to meet the needs and expectations of others.

What we don't realize is that we can do all of that for others much better if we first make time for ourselves. By setting aside time to take care of our interests, improve our skills, or just unwind.

Making time for ourselves isn't selfish. In fact, its a generous act because it makes us better. When we improve ourselves, those around us benefit from the better version that's created.

  • Taking Responsibility For Your Success with Mike James

Meet Mike, a passionate coach, mentor, and leader dedicated to fostering positive change through the principles of MIRA: Mindset, Intention, Right Action. With 17 years of experience in guiding, leading, and building national programs designed to teach, train, develop, and inspire, Mike brings a wealth of expertise. His goal is to instill positive psychology principles and inspire communities of all sizes to become organizations for good. Recently venturing into Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Mike aims to further amplify his impact. As the founder of Simple Healthy Life, Mike is committed to guiding individuals and communities towards personal and collective growth. He inspires introspection, fosters growth, and creates environments where personal and organizational transformation thrives.

    Key Takeaways:

    • We can define what success looks like for teams, but we can't define what success looks like for every individual on those teams. They have to do that for themselves.
    • We need to focus on the concept of one more rep and how it relates to meditation and our daily improvement.
    • We need to start educating people on how to be self aware at a younger age.
    • The cognitive triangle is what we need to realize affects how others see us. People can't see our thoughts and feelings. But only are actions which define who we are.
    • We should look to implement a 10-15 minute slot of time each day when students are able to practice self awareness as it pertains to the cognitive triangle.
    • EI180 is a series of 15 minute lessons designed to help students increase their self awareness.
    • The only way or make our communities better is to start with self-awareness.
