SEEing to Lead

Reaching our goals is about more than just setting them and then making a plan. It is often about how we approach the small steps that present themselves every day.

Follow the steps I outline to make progress on those small steps that make the bigger picture a reality. Distractions come in many forms, minimize them. Putting lower priority tasks first halts our ability to complete what is needed at the time. Taking on extra when it isn't aligned with our goals makes us do multiple things with less success for everything.

Who am I?

I’ve been an educator in Massachusetts for 23 years.  I’m finishing my 16th year as a building leader.  I’m a teacher centered Principal and passionate about continuous improvement and the idea that success is not a destination, but a process. I’m active on social media, vlog about continuous improvement on a weekly basis, and wrote a book also called SEEing to Lead as a way to help everyone improve education as a whole by promoting my “just cause”: improving the educational experience for as many people as possible by being purposeful, acting with integrity, and building character.

Key Points:

• Focus is not the product of our environment. Instead our environment is the result of our ability to and level of focus.
• Things like anxiety , poor relationships, and low self-esteem can be improved when we learn to increase our focus in certain areas.
• Anxiety comes with feelings of being overwhelmed. If we take a step back, focus on the things we can control and narrow down what we try to accomplish, we will notice that progress is being made and what lies in front of us is not so overwhelming.
• Poor relationships are often the result of a lack of attention or communication. Increased focus on carving our specific time and being present during that time helps increase both of those areas. The result is a better relationship.
• Self esteem suffers after multiple failures to reach our goals and achieve success. Focusing on the "basics" in a consistent manner sets us up for increased success. Once we reach a few goals, our self esteem begins to increase. 
• Focus is one of the basic elements to success. Without it, we run into multiple problems that always lead to us falling short of our goals. As soon as we turn our attention to what we need to do and shut out the distractions, everything about our situation starts to improve.

Through 23 years in Education, Jonathan has been at the bleeding edge of learning how digital tools (STEM, AR/VR, AI, environment sensors) and a focus on our humanity can boost the success of students everywhere. • If two people are in charge of a goal, no one is in charge.
• Many times leaders need to not think they have to not be nice to increase their authority. You should always be nice, but you can increase your authority index while keeping your empathy index.
• We need to get students focused on their ability to articulate their interests and passions. Then they can act rather than waiting to be acted on. 
• It's about farming, your desires so that they come to you rather than hunting them down.
• Don't be a marked zebra.

• Failure is still highly discouraged in schools through the current grading system and contradicts where it is expected if you are to improve in the private sector.

Harvey Hazen was a public school educator for 37 years. He was a teacher, counselor, high school principal and vice principal, middle school principal and district superintendent. During that time Harvey followed the progress of many students' careers as they went off to college. Many of them were less than successful even though they left high school with great academic records. Over the years he talked with many of them. Many reported two things to Harvey. Their program simply seemed to lack relevance and they had a very hard time adapting their learning style to the college demands. Thinking back over his own college career Harvey realized that in the beginning he’d had much the same experience. Then a very perceptive College Professor took Harvey under his wing and he began to thrive because he realized the relevance of the learning experience and his professor helped Harvey adapt his learning style. Harvey hopes his experience will help students who are currently not meeting their goals and currently works as a consultant and owner of Hazen Educational Consulting to further that cause.
