    00:03:02 - Business Success,

Joshua Brown shares the revenue numbers of his pressure washing business, which generated almost a million dollars in four years while he was working full time as a student pastor at a church.

    00:07:04 - Ministry Perception,

Tim Winders and Joshua Brown discuss the perception that you can only do ministry within the four walls of a church. Joshua shares his experience that there is more ministry going on outside the church than inside it.

    00:09:44 - Ministry Identity,

Joshua Brown shares his personal experience of being a former vocational pastor turned minister in the marketplace, and how he struggled with losing his identity when he left the church. He now believes that his identity didn't change, and he is still very much a shepherd that's called to guide, protect, and lead.

    00:13:39 - Empowering Creativity,

Joshua Brown wishes that more people would be empowered to think creatively when giving their lives to Jesus, and plant businesses instead of just planning churches. He believes that we need to invite people to think more creatively than what's been done in the past.

    00:15:23 - Redefining Church,

Joshua discusses his views on ministry outside of the church and the importance of making disciples in the marketplace. He emphasizes the need to look at the early church as a model and to move away from segmentation within the church.

    00:16:27 - Joshua's Testimony,

Joshua shares his testimony, from being born to a mother with addiction and living a nomadic lifestyle, to becoming a drug dealer and high school dropout. After getting in a car accident, he felt God's presence and turned his life around. He now has a ministry in the marketplace and is a husband and father of six.

    00:20:49 - Catalytic Events,

Tim asks Joshua if there were any clues in his life that God was pursuing him before the age of 19. Joshua mentions feeling God's love when he was nine and being aware of the way he should be living. However, the car accident was a catalytic event that led to his transformation.

    00:25:11 - Father Wounds,

Joshua discusses how father wounds from his past led him to love people with an expectation of receiving love in return. He learned that true love means loving without any expectation of return and embracing the Father's unconditional love.

    00:28:38 - Unconditional Love,

Tim and Joshua discuss how understanding and accepting unconditional love can be difficult, especially for those who have had issues with their earthly parents. They mention the importance of exposing our own wrongness.

    00:31:24 - Importance of Discipleship,

Joshua Brown discusses the importance of discipleship in his life and how he needed someone to show him how to live according to God's word. He encourages finding ways to create intentional and organic conversations to produce and make disciples.

    00:33:28 - Coaching vs. Discipleship,

Brown compares coaching and discipleship and believes coaching is the closest thing to discipleship he sees now. He thinks the church is lazy and doesn't want to spend the time required for discipleship, making coaching a better option.

    00:35:12 - Real-Life Discipleship,

Brown believes that creating a business provides more opportunity for real-life discipleship. He suggests inviting people over, confessing sins, being transparent, and spending time making disciples.

00:39:34 - Pastor of Pressure Washing,

Brown talks about his role as a pastor of one of the largest pressure washing companies in Nashville, Tennessee. He believes that pastors should be great lovers and servants of people and advocates for a servant leadership approach.

00:44:40 - Culture, Business, and Ministry,

Brown's core values are culture, business, and ministry. He believes culture is king and that doing great work inside one's own culture creates an opportunity for business and ministry.

    00:45:59 - Washing Widows Homes,

Joshua Brown talks about how his marketplace ministry includes washing widows' homes in Nashville, fulfilling the biblical command to take care of widows and orphans. The focus is on doing for one what you wish you could do for everybody.

00:47:11 - Expanding the Pressure Washing Pastor Model,

Joshua discusses how he realized his pressure washing pastor model can be duplicated in other places. He created an infrastructure to help other pastors and faith-driven entrepreneurs launch their own pressure washing companies.

00:50:47 - Learning Points for Business Growth,

Joshua shares three key points for growing a successful business: time, money, and framework. He emphasizes the importance of investing in marketing and learning from failures.

    00:55:05 - Significance and Identity,

Joshua talks about finding significance and value in life by recognizing that we are perfectly incomplete and lacking nothing in the eyes of God. He encourages listeners to walk in wholeness and freedom, creating something beautiful for the glory of God.

    00:58:08 - Sharing the Message,

Jerry defines a rut as a pattern of unproductive behavior. He believes that when we don't have a grounding in who we are, who we want to be, and who we're becoming, we can fall into somebody else's path, which becomes a rut for us.

    00:24:57 - Work-Life Balance,

Work-life balance is different for everyone, and it's important to find the right balance according to individual priorities. The apostle Paul was content in whatever situation he found himself in. However, modern society tends to lean towards discontentment.

    00:26:18 - Pursuing Goals,

It's important to determine if a goal is something we truly want to pursue or something someone else told us we should do. If it's the latter, it may lead to self-sabotage. Knowing what we truly want and what our priorities are can help us make better decisions.

    00:30:01 - Five F's,

The five F's are faith, family, fitness, finances, and future possibility. These are the areas in which we should focus our attention to create a fulfilling life. By prioritizing these areas according to individual values, we can make decisions that align with our goals.

Greta emphasizes the importance of having a clear intention when speaking, whether it's to a small or large group. She advises focusing on how you want the audience to feel, not just what you want to tell them. Greta also notes that the biggest challenge she sees in her work is the negative self-talk that people engage in.

    00:50:44 - Striking a Balance,

Greta discusses the challenge of balancing the desire to impress or sell with the need to be authentic. She advises clients to focus on being themselves and sharing information rather than performing. Greta also emphasizes the importance of starting small and building confidence incrementally.

    00:16:52 - Qualities of a Faith-Driven Leader,

Moses' life is a powerful example of what it means to be a faith-driven leader. He had courage in the face of adversity, compassion for his people, and unwavering faith over long periods of time. These are qualities that any leader would do well to emulate.

00:17:51 - Unlocking the Power of Faith-Driven Leadership,

Tim Winders encourages listeners to take the Faith Driven Quiz on his website, timwinders.com, and reminds them that future episodes will explore why faith-driven leadership matters and why we need people to be faith-driven leaders. He encourages listeners to continue being all they were created to be.

    About Ryan

Ryan Tansom founded Arkona in 2019 to help entrepreneurs get clarity and grow the value of their life’s work. He started his entrepreneurial career at his family business as an Executive VP responsible for the strategic, operation, and financial strategy. His experiences helped him build his own company and create the Intentional Growth Framework.

Ryan hosts the Intentional Growth Podcast, where they talk about how entrepreneurs can grow value and make an impact. He is also a keynote speaker and educator.

Learn more about Ryan and his work at Arkona through their website. You can also connect with him through LinkedIn.

Episode Highlights[02:43] The Start of Ryan’s Journey
    • Using education and fractional CFO resources, Ryan helps entrepreneurs be able to choose and have the freedom they want.
    • Like here at Seek Go Create, Ryan’s journey is about helping people redefine success. He wants to help them find their goal with intentional growth.
    • For years, Ryan worked in the family business led by his dad. In 2009, they lost hundreds of thousands of dollars and had to figure out what they wanted to do and why.
    • In the end, they sold it for the highest offer. They struggled with this decision and its effects because they didn’t define success and had no criteria for it.
    • Throughout their whole entrepreneurial journey, they weren’t in control. Without clarifying their goal, Ryan and his father couldn’t make the best choices to stay on track.

[08:39] “I just realized that through the Superbowl of our entrepreneurial career, we weren't in control of our own destiny because we hadn't clarified what is the goal.” - Click Here To Tweet This[09:42] Experience Begets Clarity
    • Tim theorizes that it’s through difficult situations like Ryan’s that a person can get clarity.
    • Ryan believes that relativity helps people understand who they are. By going through experiences, you can change yourself.
    • Wisdom is learning from other people’s experiences and applying these lessons in your life.
    • However, sometimes you need to hit the bottom to get back up.

    [11:21] Designing Your Journey
    • Success is a journey. The whole point of life is the journey to learn more about yourself through different experiences.
    • Ryan’s podcast was called Life After Business before being renamed Intentional Growth. It was about what entrepreneurs can do after selling their businesses.
    • Most of them weren’t happy after making the sale. They often wished they had realized what the business really meant in their lives.
    • It’s important to learn from your good and bad experiences. This way, you can intentionally design more experiences that you want in your life.
    • Have the freedom to be yourself without having to sacrifice what you’ve built.

[13:51] “The whole point of life is the journey. We actually learn more about ourselves through our experiences in life.” - Click Here To Tweet This[14:33] Experiences in Perspective
    • Tim recently went to the Grand Canyon. There, he thought about how the first people to discover the place probably didn’t see it for its magnificence. Instead, they saw the problem it posed.
    • Like them, going through a new experience can seem bad when you’re in the midst of it. However, without the past, you wouldn’t be who you are today.
    • Ryan was a copier sales representative who got a D in Accounting. Ironically, he now teaches finance to entrepreneurs and all sorts of people.
    • He built the business that he wished existed when they were struggling. It was because he saw this gap and went through it firsthand that he realized that there was a need.
    • When you put things into perspective, you might see that the problem was actually something amazing.

[18:20] Working in a Family Business
    • As a child, Ryan wasn’t a good student. His father was the same. He barely graduated high school and didn’t do well in college.
    • However, his father taught Ryan that all you need is to be good to people and bring value to be able to do what you want.
    • Family businesses are faced with their own challenges. People often hold their family members to different standards than just regular employees.
    • Ryan and his father had a close relationship. Fortunately, ending their business went well, and they were able to redefine who they were and what their relationship was.
    • Many family businesses have a lot of tension, emotion, and conflict. Selling it can be more practical than ending up severing the family’s relationships with one another.

[26:55] Time to Make an Exit
    • When you’re building a good company, the exit comes naturally. However, some people may never want to do so.
    • Many people talk to Ryan because they want an out. Ryan challenges them and questions what exactly is it they want to get out of.
    • You need to clarify what you want to exit. It can be a leadership role, your job, your asset, or maybe all of these things.
    • Only then can you start planning what you want to do.

    [30:59] Defining Intentional Growth
    • Intentional growth is taking purposeful action toward a clearly defined outcome. This way you’ll know how your decisions today impact what you want in the future.
    • Originally, his 5 principles were called the Growth and Exit Planning Principles. However, he realized that almost everyone hated the word “exit.”
    • Most people don’t know a lot of things when it comes to making their exit. However, once they start educating and exploring their options, other people tend to freak out.
    • Start with the end in mind. He wanted people to realize that you must build value on the way to the exit to have the choices you want.
    • The combination of intentional and growth got this point across. It’s all about putting the present and long-term growth into one phrase.

[31:47] “Intentional growth is taking purposeful action towards a clearly defined outcome. So we know how our decisions today are impacting what we clearly want in the future.“ - Click Here To Tweet This

[36:43] Not an Exit, But Intentional Growth

    • The word “exit” is like the word “death.” People don’t want to talk about it because it’s taboo. On the other hand, the word “intentional” is more positive.
    • If you’re applying intentional growth in running your business, you have to view it like a financial asset. To do this you need to clarify three things.
    • First, know who you are, what you want from your business, and why. Second, clarify your target equity valuation. Lastly, clarify how you want your leadership role to evolve.
    • Intentional growth eradicates the word “exit.” If you can view your business as a valuable asset, then you can monetize it in a way you can best benefit from.

    [39:14] Defining Growth

    • Everyone has their own definitions of growth and intentional. For Ryan, growth alone is empty. It’s within intentionality that it starts making sense.
    • Most people’s goals aren’t solid. They don’t take you to a destination.
    • Growth is pushing your limits. It’s pursuing your fullest potential. When you’re not doing this, you might feel resentment, depression, and anxiety.
    • When you know where you want your life to go, your business can help you get there.
    • Growth means that there’s alignment in what Ryan considers to be important. When you’re in sync, you can intentionally navigate your Grand Canyon experiences.

[43:50] “Growth means that all of the things that are important for me are synced up and aiming towards something that I want. It’s knowing that there are going to be Grand Canyons on the way...” - Click Here To Tweet This

[44:56] The Five Principles of Intentional Growth

    • The five principles of intentional growth are a framework for making decisions based on what you want. It should go in order for it to work.
    • The first principle is vision. determine what it is you want from your business. Without it, you can’t plan your way forward.
    • Second is having three financial targets. These targets measure and monitor your business and view your business as an asset.
    • The first financial target is your target annual income. Second is your outside net worth. The third target is your target equity valuation.
    • Tune in to the full episode to discover the last three principles. You’ll also be able to learn more about how they can help stay on track with your journey.

[45:29] “The decisions that we have every single day getting thrown at us, the goal is to be able to synthesize those into a framework.” - Click Here To Tweet This

    [51:38] Challenges in the Framework

    • For Tim, the first principle is the hardest to apply. Many people find it the most challenging. However, it’s crucial to start from there.
    • Ryan’s experiences in Arkona, their educational business, people often struggled with principle # 4.
    • Ryan wants to be able to educate people first about their finances so they can make their own decisions.
    • Unfortunately, most people don’t manage their finances well. Ryan isn’t able to help them without knowing their numbers.
    • A CFO can help you. Ryan launched a financial dashboard offering where they support you by helping you plan. You’re in control of making it happen.

[01:02:58] Seeking: Ryan’s Four Personal Principles

    • Ryan chooses the word “seek.”
    • He loves to learn.
    • His four personal principles in order are to learn, create, teach, then finally lead.

    About Clifton

Clifton Corbin is a financial literacy advocate, author, and speaker. He is also a registered financial consultant and has a Master's Degree in Business Administration. Clifton is passionate about advocating for financial literacy among children, young adults, and parents. Using his experience managing million-dollar budgets, and understanding of economics and personal, finance, he teaches children and parents the importance of financial literacy for teens and kids.

Clifton is also a stay-at-home dad! He, himself, is having conversations with his kids about money. His book, Your Kids, Their Money, guides parents in teaching their children to be financially literate. He also revised The Richest Man in Babylon and related it to personal finances in today’s society.

Learn more about Clifton’s work on his website.

Episode Highlights[02:41] The Many Things Clifton Does
    • Clifton is an advocate for financial literacy. He’s passionate about helping spread financial literacy for teens and kids.
    • He is also a stay-at-home dad. Even at home, Clifton can find creative ways to maximize his time even without a full-time job.
    • Too often, people tie their identities to their job. Before leaving his office job, he trained for a managerial position.
    • Leaving meant losing opportunities. Clifton wouldn’t be able to teach younger talent and wouldn’t be able to be a voice in the diversity of different roles as a black male.
    • It was hard for him at the beginning. However, he still found many opportunities to give back and support the communities he is a part of.

[06:29] The Many Roles of One Person
    • Clifton loves to learn and create. However, he never sought to be an author. He had something to share, so he wrote a book.
    • He enjoys working on different things but doesn't necessarily identify with each of them.
    • Clifton is a husband, a father, a friend, and many more. It takes a lot of work to compress a person into one title.
    • Rather than ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, it can be better to ask them what they want to do for the next few years.
    • What you want to do can change. Even as adults, people are still figuring out who they are.

    [13:26] The Financially Illiterate Epidemic
    • Too many people see talking about money as taboo. Not enough schools teach financial literacy for teens and kids either.
    • It can be an incredibly complicated and individualized topic. Educating yourself about finances requires time and effort to figure out how it works.
    • It's essential to encourage people to talk about money. It can be hard to have this conversation because many are afraid of it.
    • Having more conversations about money can lead to an exponential increase in financial literacy. People need to talk about money to learn.
    • Financial literacy for teens and kids is essential for them to have a secure future.

[16:19] “If we can open up some of these conversations. If we can have some more transparency with regard to our money. I think what will happen is the financial literacy will increase exponentially.” - Click Here To Tweet This[18:02] The Life Skill of Making Money
    • As taught in school, financial literacy for teens and kids doesn't prepare them. The concepts are too general.
    • You're still responsible for educating your child. It's not just about teaching your child how to manage money but also about values and principles.
    • Financial literacy is a life skill. Children need to learn how to manage money and how to feel confident and comfortable with doing so.
    • Without teaching them, children may never learn these skills or learn them the hard way.
    • People need to build these habits and skills to be ready for when they need to use them.

[20:32] “One of the skills they (our children) will absolutely need is how to manage money, how to feel confident, and comfortable managing money in a way that will benefit them.” - Click Here To Tweet This[23:29] The Importance of Financial Literacy for Teens and Kids
    • From an early age, Clifton's parents were open with him about money. However, he only learned about earning money and saving it.
    • With only those two aspects, he had fractured financial literacy. He lacked deeper knowledge about managing money and ended up making mistakes.
    • In making and fixing those mistakes, he learned about all the other aspects of financial literacy.
    • Clifton wants to ensure that the youth can get the whole picture of financial literacy early on. Learning these things can help prepare them for the future.
    • Wherever you are in you're life, you want to feel like you can manage your money. It's about knowing what to do and feeling confident and comfortable doing so.

[29:49] Teaching Financial Literacy for Teens and Kids as a Parent
    • No matter your confidence in your knowledge, parents automatically know more about money than their children do.
    • However, you can also take this opportunity to educate yourself and learn more about what you don’t know.
    • Share with your children what you know, like personal experiences that taught you firsthand.
    • If you choose not to talk about it, you're not informing or educating your children. You have to teach them how the world works; money is a big part.

[30:46] “If you don't feel like you've got your money under control, this is the chance to say, ‘Okay, I'm going to start learning.’“ - Click Here To Tweet This[34:40] Money in Many Cultures
    • Different cultures might teach and approach money differently. But regardless of culture, having these conversations, especially with your children, is vital.
    • Generational gaps, gender, age, and even familial structure can affect how these conversations go.
    • You have the advantage in conversations with your children because they don’t yet have these different stigmas about money.
    • Show your children that you are open to discussion. Let them ask questions and encourage honest communication to build relationships and trust.
    • Run toward conversations that make you uncomfortable. Often, it’s these conversations that promote your growth as a person.

[38:43] "Run towards the conversations that make you feel uncomfortable. If you can have those conversations, things get better." - Click Here To Tweet This[39:48] Your Kids, Their Money
    • Clifton's book, Your Kids, Their Money is a guide for parents, guardians, and adults, in general, to hold conversations about money.
    • The title encapsulates the need to support kids and teach them to be responsible with their money.
    • The book also provides a peek into Clifton's life. He talks about the importance of managing money and appreciating community.
    • It’s written for parents to help them start having these conversations. The book includes resources and advice on what you need to know and what you can say to your kid.
    • It’s never too late or too early to start teaching your kids about money.

    [45:09] Getting The Conversation Started
    • Give your children an opportunity to practice their financial skills through a budget or allowance. Letting them handle money can go a long way to learning how to manage money.
    • Making financial conversations a natural part of your life is also helpful.
    • Having both these conversations and opportunities to practice can help them develop a better mindset about money.
    • For younger children, focus on teaching them about finances. Be an advisor to older children to help deepen their understanding through discussions and questions.
    • Clifton advises against tying allowance to work. What's important is that your children can practice using money.

[47:14] “Have those conversations and just make them part of your everyday. So that your kids are just in the mindset of thinking about what they could be doing and what they should be doing.” - Click Here To Tweet This[56:43] Clifton on Teaching Financial Literacy for Teens and Kids
    • Clifton's oldest child is 10, and the youngest is 8.
    • Both his kids get an allowance. His son is money-motivated, but his daughter is less so. Each individual has their own approach to managing money.
    • However, both are motivated by donating and helping the less fortunate. Just recently, his son gave some of his money to someone asking for loose change.
    • Clifton is glad to be able to give them these kinds of opportunities to express themselves.

    [56:13] Doubling Down on Creating
    • Right now, Clifton is in a creative mindset. He is working on a workbook version of his book and a tabletop game about personal finances.
    • In the past, he has focused a lot on the administrative side of his advocacy. Now, he wants to focus on creating.
    • It’s energizing for Clifton to create.
