Episode Highlights[03:01] The Work Carice Does
    • Carice's job is to help support and develop people managers worldwide. In her spare time, she works to share the unwritten rules of success with others.
    • Her mission is to empower people to know themselves, know others, and know their environments better. This way, they can make a bigger impact and have fun.
    • Humans spend a big part of their lives centered around work. That’s why work needs to be a fun and positive experience where people can make a difference.
    • Carice has experienced being miserable at work. Now, she wants to share the lessons she learned so that others won’t make the same mistakes she did.

[04:11] “I think we spend more time at work than we probably do with our spouses, children, families, closest friends, and I'm just of the mindset that it needs to be a positive experience.” - Click Here To Tweet This[06:20] Meeting Halfway
    • In any relationship, including work, people need to meet halfway. You can do your best to be better, but other people also need to make an effort.
    • Focus on the things that you can control and influence, including yourself. You can't control other people, but you can choose how you show up and what you say and do.
    • Your actions can encourage others to take a different perspective and change how they show up.
    • For Tim, we need to bring our 100% to relationships, especially marriage.
    • Everybody should bring the best they can give. However, you can’t force others to do the same.

[11:32] The Four Themes That Shaped Carice
    • Four themes define Carice's life. First is the impact of her close-knit family.
    • Secondly, her family and school are deeply rooted in spirituality. It’s this upbringing that helped her become a values-driven person.
    • Third, Carice uses music to manage herself and her emotions. It reminds her that there is a much bigger picture than the stressors in her life.
    • Lastly, her family puts a lot of emphasis on education.
    • Carice realized it takes more than smarts and titles to become successful. You need to have relationships and understand your environment to reach your goals.

[12:43] “You need other people. You need relationships. You need to understand the environments in which you're working so that you can really be successful.” - Click Here To Tweet This[13:37] Challenges that Redefined Carice’s Success
    • Carice felt she was doing well in her first job. She grew despondent and didn't want to go to work.
    • This experience made her realize that intelligence wasn't enough. She had to find a new way to enjoy work and become successful.
    • The experience also encouraged her to develop a deeper relationship with God.
    • In her second job, she put a lot of faith in the company. However, it collapsed during her time there, making her reflect on who she should depend on.
    • In 2011, Carice moved to South Africa to live with her husband. This shift was what she needed at that time.

[23:05] Becoming Aware of Different Experiences
    • When you grow up in an environment built for you and surrounded by similar people, you don’t tend to think of others’ experiences.
    • Privilege involves taking a different perspective and asking if there is an aspect of who you are that hasn't made your life more difficult.
    • You can expose yourself to other people. Listen to other people's stories to become more mindful of their experiences and challenges.
    • You may not fully understand someone's experience, but you can become more aware. It encourages you to think about those whose voices go unheard.
    • Not everyone has access to the same opportunities, setting people back. It also creates a continuous cycle that widens the gap between people.

[26:56] “It's about how we can expose ourselves to different kinds of people and hear other people's stories so that we can be more mindful of somebody else's experience and what the challenges that somebody might be having.” - Click Here To Tweet This[31:54] A Fair Shot For Everyone
    • People would name famous black people to claim that everything is okay now. However, it's when black people can live regular but still good lives that we can say that it's okay.
    • Everyone should have access to education, healthcare, jobs, and opportunities. Without that, everyone suffers.
    • Look out for each other. Not everyone has equal talents and gifts, but you must ensure everyone is okay and has the chance to be okay.
    • God loves everyone equally. People deserve love, respect, and dignity.
    • Most black people want a shot to excel. It's vital to be fair in giving opportunities that can one day lead to success.

[36:30] “God loves us all equally. God doesn’t place value on certain people and a lesser value on others.” - Click Here To Tweet This[41:45] Why Carice Wrote Intelligence is Not Enough
    • Carice noticed that many bright black professionals often struggled in their work. She wanted to share through the book what you need to succeed.
    • She doesn't have all the answers. However, it's asking the right questions that can help you discover what it takes to succeed in your current environment.
    • Most Black people grow up in homes where they don't get to have a voice, affecting their performance.
    • Try to look and reflect on how you’ve been socialized. Others might have told you to keep your head down even at work.
    • However, you must find your voice and open up to grow and succeed. Share something about yourself.

    [47:21] Your Voice at Work
    • African culture is generally very hierarchical. People learn never to interrupt or challenge authority.
    • However, disrupting and interrupting authority is sometimes a necessity.
    • You need to create a boundary between how you operate culturally and personally to how you operate professionally.
    • You may not have grown up this way, but you must be fluid and flexible. If you want to be effective and have an impact in different situations, you need to change.

[52:03] The Importance of Diversity and Representation
    • There need to be more people who are willing to pull others into a conversation. Allies, like Tim, can speak up and use their power and privilege to assist excluded people.
    • Speaking up and challenging what you don’t think is right can prompt people to think. They can start to understand what’s wrong and the impact of their actions and words.
    • Black people are often underrepresented in history and the workplace. Without these representations, they don’t feel reaffirmed as a person.
    • Carice wrote this book with black professionals in mind. She emphasizes the benefits of having diversity and a different perspective on matters.
    • Without that representation, it’s hard to believe that you can do it.

[55:08] “You need to see yourself reflected in the people around you to make you think that ‘yeah, okay, well, this person did it so I could do it too.” - Click Here To Tweet This[58:20] How You Can Be Better (When You’re Not Black)
    • Carice’s book tells the reader what it is they have control of. This includes how they show up, their mindset, behavior, communications, and more.
    • It’s good to read books about people who are different from you. For people outside its target audience, it can provide a different perspective.
    • The book can help you understand the mindset and behavior of different people around you. It encourages you to start thinking about what you can do to create a safe space for them as well.
    • As a leader, think about who you’re giving opportunities to. Be intentional and learn to expand your group. Reach out and connect with people who are different from you.
    • Social media is also a great way to find and follow different people. It expands your exposure to different perspectives.

[01:02:42] A Message for Black Professionals
    • The book’s framework is to know yourself, know others, and know your environment. With these three, you can grow professionally to have maximum impact.
    • Carice shares the unwritten rules of success for performing well in high-performing environments. Her book can greatly help those who are struggling and want to improve.
    • It includes not only career advice from her but also from 30 black professionals.
    • In her career, Carice has learned a lot and made many mistakes. She shares this message so that you won’t make the same mistakes as her.

    [01:05:01] Getting Things Created
    • For Carice, “create” resonates the most.
    • She realized that the world needs people who get things done.
    • That is what she did. Carice wrote the book, created it, and got it done.

Episode Highlights[02:01] The Joy of Grandparenting
    • Don is the director of publishing for Salem Author Services. He helps people publish the books they write. He's also a pastor, a legacy coach, and has been a church planter.
    • Don Newman shares the immense joy of being a grandparent and nurturing his grandchildren’s spiritual legacy.
    • The most difficult part of being a grandparent is when Don’s children need to discipline his grandchildren.
    • Don wonders why God is passionate about legacy.
    • God is generational, and there's nothing like having the love and support of parents that love each other.

[05:42] “I was so busy trying to work, manage my life, take care of my family, and get us to where we needed to go that I didn't have the time to tell stories and hear things at the level that I'm able to now.” - Click Here To Tweet This[12:29] The Importance of Spiritual Legacy in a Modern Life
    • Grandparents influence their children and grandchildren through stories and prayer.
    • Don has seven journals, one for each of his grandchildren; he writes prayers, quotes, and things he wants to pass on.
    • Nurturing a strong relationship with Christ is the foundation for future generations.
    • Don and Tim explore how grandparents can share their faith, love, and encouragement.
    • Grandparents have the unique opportunity to create lasting memories with their grandchildren. They can be present in their lives and offer support and love.

[24:54] Embracing Simplicity and Nurturing Imagination
    • In the simpler times of their childhood, people grew up without the constant distractions of modern life, particularly technology.
    • The lack of gadgets fostered a sense of creativity, imagination, and unhurried living.
    • Don highlights that they made their own fun, playing with what was available.
    • He enjoyed the little moments, like watching a popsicle melt, drinking water from a hose, and fishing in a pond.
    • Those experiences taught them the value of slowing down and appreciating the present.

[26:31] “The greatest thing you've got to do to be successful in ministry is you've got to eliminate hurry, because hurry is the greatest enemy of your spiritual life.” - Click Here To Tweet This[26:44] Resisting the Lure of Hurry Sickness of Modern Life
    • One of the biggest obstacles people face today is "hurry sickness," the constant rush that pervades modern lives. The world is a lot faster now.
    • Jesus was busy but never in a hurry—we, too can learn to prioritize what truly matters. Hurry is the greatest enemy of your spiritual life.
    • Don loves to see his grandchildren raised with some parameters on electronics use.
    • He enjoys seeing them do creative things rather than sit in front of the TV the entire time.

[34:21] Holding onto the Values of Our Upbringing
    • Don reminisced about the values instilled in him by his parents, who placed a great emphasis on God, faith, and family values.
    • Their marriage wasn't perfect. They faced challenges that came with shift work and unfulfilling jobs.
    • Despite that, his parents were committed to living a meaningful life.
    • Don grew up in an atmosphere where he and his siblings could soar and be confident.

[38:33] The Effects of a Father Figure[38:36] “In God's perfect picture, we live in a fallen world, but the perfect picture is that family unit with the father, being that sense of stability.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Father figures are crucial in people's lives, especially in their perception of God.
    • Many individuals who have had absent or negative experiences with their fathers struggle to receive what God has for them.

[42:35] “The greatest impact we can make in this world is we'll go to church, but we can't do everything at church. But we can do everything with this—our family.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Consequently, the Enemy has exploited this lack of a father figure to disrupt the family structure.
    • Don wants to support those who may not have experienced a loving father figure.
    • He will do everything he can through prayers.

[44:03] “I'm not an executive director. I'm a son. I'm a son of God, I'm an heir. But I'm also a father.” - Click Here To Tweet This[46:04] Systemic Problems in the Deep South
    • The Deep South is a racially charged environment.
    • Don recognizes the importance of asking questions and bridging the gap between different peoples.
    • Listening to the experiences of others can help them truly understand and empathize with the feelings of marginalized groups.
    • Many African Americans feel fear when the police pull them over.
    • Don embarked on a journey of self-reflection and growth when he started traveling and experiencing different cultures.

    [53:19] A Multi-Dimensional Conversation with God
    • Don constantly sought better ways to explain the evolving nature of this relationship. He initially thought prayer was one-dimensional, but it’s more than that.
    • Prayer isn't just about sending messages and waiting for answers. It is about entering into a partnership with the divine.
    • Don wrote about his experiences to invite others to explore the possibilities of a life centered on prayer.
    • He believed that God desires a relationship with His children and their active participation in His plans for the world.

[56:14] Prayer as Partnership and Family Business
    • Don learned that God yearns for His children to actively participate in His plans rather than be passive observers.
    • This partnership is a means for God to involve His children in His work, allowing them to grow and mature.
    • Don realized that the true power of prayer lies in its ability to engage people in God's family business. Doubt and uncertainty plague the prayers of many people.
    • Don's message seeks to alleviate these fears, reminding people of the power and impact their prayers can have.

[01:02:54] Why Did You Fail to Work That Prayer?
    • Don encourages listeners never to underestimate the power and impact of prayers.
    • The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person has great power.
    • Prayers are not instant. They require persistence.
    • By praying, we are stacking the heavens and filling the bowls of heaven on behalf of our great-grandchildren and beyond.
    • We see the power of a committed prayer life through stories like Dr. Dobson's great-great-grandfather, who prayed for seven generations.

[01:10:08] Overcoming a Modern Life’s Obstacles to Prayer
    • The Enemy will use various tactics to try to keep us from praying. They might try to make you feel unqualified or guilty.
    • God doesn't call the qualified; he qualifies the called. Even the people who think they’re nobodies can make a difference.
    • The blood of Jesus lends power to our prayers. Our past mistakes and what we think are inadequacies are powerless before him.
    • To grow in prayer, surround yourself with a supportive community that believes in you.

[01:15:01] The Value of Community and Support
    • The COVID pandemic highlighted our human need for community.
    • People need connection, but the pandemic separated us all.
    • A strong community will help you grow and open doors to the beautiful reality of prayer.
    • By engaging in a spiritual partnership with God, we can experience the fulfillment of being a part of His work.

[01:17:25] God Makes Us Hungry So We Can Seek
    • Our hunger makes us seekers of God and His truth and His Kingdom.
    • A back-and-forth dialogue with God will allow us to see His kingdom come into our lives and the world around us.
    • Tim wraps up the conversation by encouraging listeners to get the book ‘Praying for Reign.’

Episode Highlights[02:04] Why Tim Started Seek Go Create
    • Tim loves podcasts. He is a big podcast consumer and thinks audio is an exciting medium.
    • While working with a client on their podcast, someone told Tim he should try being a podcaster.
    • He knew he had ideas and things he wanted to share and listed them. All he needs to do is start.
    • They're celebrating their 200th episode, and the rest is history.

    [05:04] Facing Challenges
    • Most podcasts experience podcast fade. They fade out after a few episodes and eventually stop releasing new content.
    • Tim never faced this challenge. He loves interviewing people and having the opportunity to ask and learn new things. For him, there is no shortage of things to talk about.
    • His biggest challenge is that he's a generalist. He wants to avoid narrowing down his audience, making discoverability a challenge.

    [06:59] Tim, Live on Air
    • Tim would love to do a live TV show.
    • There have been times when they've prepared to start a live show but have yet to do one.
    • Tim and Glori are taking their time to pause before truly going live.

    [08:15] Tim’s Favorite Episodes
    • An episode close to Tim's heart is the very first episode. He talked about their lives and shared stories of their most challenging times.
    • Another favorite solo episode of his focuses on where the name Seek Go Create came from back in early 2020.
    • His favorite interview moment was the episode with Quan Huynh, an ex-convict who has written a book. Tim and Quan had a powerful conversation about forgiveness.
    • Society today doesn't easily forgive others and yourselves. Vindictiveness can impact your relationship with God and people.

[09:22] “I was praying about it and asking the Lord what to do. And I felt like the Lord said, ‘Tim, I need you to share that testimony, that ugly testimony of all that happened.” - Click Here to Tweet This[11:46] Podcast Energy Boost
    • Some things fatigue you and while others energize you. Tim found that being a podcaster and interviewing people energizes him.
    • Glori affirms Tim is an extrovert — talking with people is his energy boost. Glori's energy doesn't come from being a podcaster herself. Instead, she gets energy from designing and being behind the scenes.
    • It’s good to know your strengths and what energizes you.

[12:37] “Every time I record an episode, when I am done, I am energized. I'm excited. I love it. I'm so glad I did it. And it's kind of that catalyst that just keeps me going to the next one.” - Click Here to Tweet This[14:50] How Podcasting Affected Tim’s Life
    • The podcast is more than three years old and now has 200 episodes. Everything Tim has done for the past years revolved around redefining success.
    • From the podcast to YouTube, his books, and coaching, Tim’s work fits together to that topic.
    • He aims to help people define success in the world and the Kingdom of God. This mission often means exploring various topics and relating them to success.
    • Tim and Glori initially focused on the hustle. As they got older and wiser, they realized that success is more than wealth.
    • Wealth is fleeting. Don’t allow material things to define and be a measurement of your success.

[16:27] “It's the mission I'm on. To really help people ask what success really is. What is success in this culture, in the society in this world, and in the kingdom of God? And really drill down on that.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:57] Advice for Being a Podcaster
    • Tim advises brainstorming and listing your ideas. Find people to talk to early on. Planning like this helps counter one of the biggest struggles of running out of ideas.
    • Have people that you can discuss the podcast and your ideas with.
    • Just go and get started. Set up a mic, get your software, record, upload, and share. See what happens.
    • Tim usually has multiple Seek Go Create episodes recorded and ready beforehand.

    [26:40] The Importance of Consistency
    • Tim and Glori's son, Joshua, has thousands of followers on Instagram. One of the things he does is post consistently every day.
    • Being consistent is one of the most important habits to have. Seek Go Create has been posted every Monday morning for the past 3 years.
    • Consistency is valuable for anything, not just podcasting. Inconsistency might disconnect you from the people you're trying to reach.

[29:29] “It's foundational for just a lot of things. Success is just trying to be consistent as best as you can.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:43] Finding Interview Guests for Seek Go Create
    • Tim's initial basis for his guests was just his curiosity. He knew he wanted to talk to specific people.
    • In general, Tim often talks to people in leadership in both business and ministry.
    • Now, he wants to find more specific people with stories about redefining success. They are the people who have gone through a catalytic event that changed their lives.
    • Their system includes an intake form that people can answer. They read through it once a month.
    • Behind the scenes, being system and procedure-driven helps the interviewer to focus on what they’re good at. It’s with their team effort that a podcast can be consistent.

    [33:45] Seek Go Create’s Topics
    • Early in the podcast, their first season focused on the things that Tim and Glori have done.
    • Next season, they talked about their nomad way of living.
    • The third season focuses on being the ultimate leader. Tim has always enjoyed the topic of leadership and dives deeper into that this season.
    • Tim is now working on a new faith-driven leader series of episodes. He saw that people struggle with how to live with faith and stay true while within the world.

[35:42] “I see people struggling with how do I live my faith out in this world that has so much stuff and junk going on? How do I stay true to who I am and align my beliefs and, and my spiritual foundation with the work world and making money?” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:47] The Future of Seek Go Create
    • Tim and Glori often have conversations about the relationship between video and audio. While Seek Go Create is an audio podcast, they look into how the video aspect can fit in.
    • Tim likes long-form interviews. However, they plan to move to short-form, bite-sized content because it's easier for people to consume.
    • They continue to adapt and look into opportunities to share information.
    • As mentioned, one of the things they’re working on for the future is the season about being a faith-driven leader. From there, they’ll see how it goes.
    • They also want to look into communities around the topics they usually discuss.

    [42:23] The Listeners’ Suggestion
    • Tim and Glori are soon celebrating their anniversary.
    • They’re asking you, the listeners, for suggestions on where they can have a relaxing celebration.
    • Send your thoughts by commenting on YouTube or sending an email!

    About Alex

Alex Sezer is a culture catalyst and a keynote speaker. He is the CEO of Alex Sezer Ventures, where he teaches leaders to create a new culture of stewardship at their offices. He wants to help organizations to grow and undergo cultural transformation rooted in Christ.

Alex has walked many different paths. He was a former football player at Texas A&M and an engineering graduate. Alex gained experience as a leader and entrepreneur when he became the president of Twin City Properties and founded his own business. He combined these experiences and skills to carry out his mission and create better organizational cultures.

Want to learn more about Alex? You can visit his website, LinkedIn, and Instagram, or send him an email!

Episode Highlights[04:06] The Many Paths of Alex Sezer
    • Alex helps leaders create their ideal new culture in their organizations. He inspires students, teachers, and athletes to live out their dreams.
    • From the start, Alex was already speaking at church and teaching at Sunday school. He was involved in the ministry and continues to apply that in what he does now.
    • He studied engineering at Texas A&M. However, Alex didn't go down the traditional path. He found that he enjoyed the people and relationship side of things.
    • Besides all these roles, he was also a football player in college.
    • God has shifted Alex’s path many times. However, he continues to follow wherever God sends him as long as he’s fulfilling his mission.

[06:25] “I marry the mission and date the methods. So whenever God wants to shift me in life, I'm okay with that as long as I'm fulfilling his mission in my life.” - Click Here to Tweet This[08:58] God’s Strategy for Alex
    • Alex is very sure of who he is at this point in life. His certainty of who he is allows him to go wherever God wants him to, even if it's outside his comfort zone.
    • As a toddler, he remembers dreaming about what he’s doing today. He may not have understood then, but whenever he’s speaking on stage, he remembers his dream.
    • It took a lot of steps to get Alex where he is today. However, he wasted none of these steps. God strategically engineered this plan to get him there.
    • Alex continues to trust God and let Him shift his path. He knows he'll see God's strategy when he looks back.

[10:49] “For where I am right now, He didn't waste a single step. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. So that lets me know that I'm not just aimlessly wandering around... God is an engineer when it comes to how he plans and orchestrates things.” - Click Here to Tweet This[13:37] The Temptation of an Idol
    • Texas A&M is one of the largest colleges in the nation. Here, Alex was blessed to play in front of thousands of people.
    • An idol is anything that takes the worship or admiration of God. You might see some of the most intense worship in football games.
    • Unfortunately, there’s a temptation in sports and in other possible idols to build your identity on them.
    • As a player, people will place an identity on you. You might find yourself attaching your value and self-worth to something as fickle as other people’s opinions.
    • Alex learned from Scripture that we could defeat this temptation by relying on the truth written in the Bible. Don't let yourself be tempted to seek validation by external forces.

[22:12] “If we can rest on what's written, that's how we defeat the temptation of I'm going to attach success to this or I'm going to measure my worth by this.” - Click Here to Tweet This[25:23] Leaving the Spotlight
    • Many sports athletes haven’t figured out how to transition out of attaching their identity to sports.
    • Unfortunately, their days as a player can abruptly end. There is often no time to figure out what they can do next.
    • Many find themselves questioning their worth and value. They don’t transition well when they’ve attached everything they are to how others view them.
    • You can go from being a status symbol of success to being viewed as old and washed up years later.
    • Alex was able to leave that space because he realized that football wasn't his identity. He does miss parts of football, especially facing struggles as a team as close as theirs.

    [33:08] Moving Forward
    • Alex's decision to stop playing was for his health. It wasn't a hard transition because he had his skills and experiences and formed relationships working in his favor.
    • After graduating, Alex worked for an energy consulting firm. While fishing at a lake, he met a man who would become a good friend and mentor.
    • Years later, he became a manager and later president of his friend's company. Alex was also able to start his own business buying real estate.
    • Then he felt God shifting him towards something else. He tried different things until God called him to do what he does today.
    • Alex used his knowledge of the Scripture and leadership experience. He now helps workplace leaders create a new culture from a biblical perspective.

    [40:52] God Shifting Alex
    • Alex talked to his friend and mentor about leaving, who gave him a great offer. He could start his business but continue to work.
    • However, Alex refused the offer. He didn't want to split himself because he wanted to commit to being a proper steward wherever God took him.
    • Alex went from income to no income. These transitions in his work and business were easier because he didn’t attach who he was to what he was doing.

    [44:28] Working With Alex
    • Now, Alex works with leaders who are in a place to make organizational decisions. It’s at this level where change can happen.
    • Most organizations he works with are the ones large enough to have issues. This is often when teams of people realize the importance of culture.
    • Startups can also work with Alex to set a great foundation for their organization. Unfortunately, people tend to ignore issues that don't have an immediate impact.
    • Too often, Alex and his work serve as an aspirin. People often work with them when they’ve already reached a point where they realize that something is wrong.
    • Alex is cost-efficient for his customers. He knows that he can give them what they need in a short amount of time and follow up regularly.

    [49:36] Common Mistakes Organizations Make
    • One of the biggest mistakes within an organization is a lack of clarity and communication.
    • Founders can have a vision in their head that can become blurred. Find out how you can effectively and clearly communicate it to the people in your organization.
    • The number one mistake is hiring the wrong people and losing the right ones. There’s a huge difference when you’re surrounded by the right people.
    • Alex takes a holistic approach to culture. Communicating your vision and mission and having the right people can help you build a new culture in your company.
    • Society often tries to get us to conform to their expectations. However, no one can buy culture. Connections and relationships bring people to work.

[53:49] “Culture is taught, not bought.” - Click Here to Tweet This[55:41] Hiring the Right People
    • Alex uses the Word of God as a foundation for his coaching.
    • In Exodus 18, Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, gives instructions on forming the right team. From this passage, Alex learned the 3 Cs of hiring.
    • The first is to find someone with competency. Make sure they can do the job with excellence.
    • Next is character. The people you hire should match your core values.
    • Last is capacity. Place your people in the proper position where they can best thrive.

    [59:27] Being a Steward Leader
    • In the beginning, God placed Adam in charge of something. This is where stewardship began as a God-given responsibility. While we may be in charge, we own nothing.
    • In the Parable of the Talents, a master gives his stewards talents, opportunity, and time. Like in the parable, everyone will one day have to answer the question, “what did you do with what was given to you?”
    • Alex sees everything in his life as an opportunity to be a steward. This includes being a father.
    • Leaders often start getting off track when they think of themselves as an owner and lose sight of what being a steward means. We need to build a new culture of stewardship.

[01:02:41] “We are stewards of everything, owners of nothing.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:05:26] Weaving the Bible Into Your Life
    • Alex has always used the Bible for everything else in his life. Why not business too?
    • Many business books often have roots in the Bible.
    • The Bible is a living, moving document, not just an ancient text for good advice. Despite the changes in time, it can still apply to what we’re doing right now.

[01:10:09] When God Tells Alex “Go”
    • Alex is in the season of life where he is in the go phase.
    • He is walking in faith and goes wherever God tells him to go.
    • Alex believes God will reveal more details to him as he continues through life.

  • Serving The People: Redefining Leadership with Coco Brown

Companies around the world mostly care about one thing — profit. Even if they say people are their most important assets, many businesses still put profit over people when things get difficult. We've recently seen massive tech layoffs attributed to the economic downturn, inflation, and overhiring. If people are a company's most important assets, why are they the first to go when times are rough? Employees are the heart of a company. Companies should be serving the people working in them too.

Coco Brown joins us today to discuss what it means to be a leader in today's businesses. She also shares the importance of creating a diverse workforce and how leaders can create change in their organizations. She also shares Athena Alliance, a community for women and executives to learn and support one another in career development.

For anyone out there aiming to start serving the people through better leadership, this conversation is for you.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Discover the current state of businesses and how there's a critical need to create diverse workplaces.
    2. Understand current trends in leadership and how to be a leader serving the people you lead.
    3. Learn about Coco’s questions to help you reflect on your organizational culture.

    About Coco

Coco Brown is the founder and CEO of The Athena Alliance, an Executive Learning Community dedicated to helping women accelerate their leadership advancement. Coco is an expert in shaping the modern boardroom and modern leadership. She has extensive experience as a board member and advisor of several organizations, including Nasdaq, ArcherPoint, Athena Rising Foundation, DevOpsGroup, Executive Kinections, and Loggly.

Before establishing The Athena Alliance, she was the President and COO of Taos. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Psychology.

You can connect with Coco on LinkedIn.

Episode Highlights[01:32] About Coco and Athena Alliance
    • Coco is working to redefine and revolutionize the way senior leaders advance their careers.
    • Athena Alliance works with women only.
    • Coco believes women need more support.

[02:54] The Current State of Business
    • Business models are constantly changing. Old models can't keep up.
    • Learning in the current model now requires learning from people who have done similar things.
    • Athena Alliance also helps companies stay on top of recent global trends and changes.
    • Interconnectedness today is built on sales and recruiting rather than finding the right people to talk to.
    • Coco shares how Athena Alliance is similar to a college campus where people learn and build social connections with each other.

    [09:48] Creating an Abundant Community
    • Athena Alliance serves women. They consciously move toward serving their people through a more supportive community.
    • Coco shares it’s important to let go of the scarcity mindset and embrace an abundant mindset.
    • The alliance fosters social connections through virtual salons and peer groups.
    • Coco shares the motto "come as you are," which is especially important in a circle of women. Women have more pressure around appearances compared to men.

    [17:19] We’re All Biased
    • GitHub, a software repository, anonymized data and found that women's software gets accepted 4% more often than men's.
    • However, when they don’t anonymize the data, the acceptance rate for women is less than 50%.
    • Throughout history, white men have been steeped in business and politics while women focus on family and society.
    • Not only that, most women carry the bulk of familial responsibilities. When women want to build a career, they need the flexibility to juggle their job and home responsibilities. Not all systems can offer that.

    [26:39] Learning More About Coco
    • Coco was born in Malaysia. Her father is a professor at the University of Malaysia, while her mother was a social worker.
    • Her father was researching cocoa beans as a commodity and thought it would be fun to name her after them.
    • Coco's experience with her name had been a mix of positives and negatives. On the one hand, it's a memorable name. On the other hand, some want to change her name.

    [31:52] Coco’s Redefinition of Success
    • She shares how she wrapped her identity to a company she worked for 17 years.
    • Coco made Athena Alliance out of a dinner group with female chief information officers while thinking about what to do next.
    • Now, Coco’s success is about changing the world for the better. Serving the people starts with us.

[34:07] “I had to redefine success as what I'm going to be for the world and how I'm going to change the world for the better, not just be a successful…leader of an IT company. I wanted to do something very, very meaningful in the world and do it by example.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:25] Identities, Success, and Happiness [40:01] “Identity [can] crush you, because if you can't put it in parallel to each other, then it can become the core resentment in the relationship…you get to keep moving forward, and I'm staying stuck.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Coco shares how she and her husband decided Coco would be the primary breadwinner based on their earnings.
    • As Coco's job got bigger and bigger, she noticed her husband became 'Coco's husband.'
    • Identities can create resentment in the relationship when it’s not parallel to each other.
    • Happiness comes from not getting our identities tied up to titles and comparison, then allowing yourself to define success on your own terms.

[41:11] “Forget about the title… go for the role, go for what you're going to be doing, go for… whether it's additive and exciting, and those are the things... and the rest will figure itself out.” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:48] Trends in Leadership
    • Coco shares how businesses, like in Silicon Valley, say people are assets. But when it comes down to it, they value profits and growth above all else, no matter the cost.
    • For example, Spotify made huge investments last year, and as soon as the economy became unstable, they let go of their workforce.
    • Your business should consider responsible growth and sustainability when investing in something.
    • There needs to be more people who care about change in leadership roles. Serving the people requires having better people make decisions.

[45:22] “Don't make the investments for growth at all costs right now, today. You make it because you believe that... [it] is going to make a sustainable business for the future. So when things get tough, you don't just cut to the bone. You stay the course.” - Click Here to Tweet This[52:40] The Questions to Improve Your Organization[57:11] “Has the company gone through a bad economic cycle?... To me, that's one of the biggest ways of learning what they really care about. And how you think about long-term sustainable growth.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Where are the women in your organization? What roles do they play?
    • Do you have strategies for creating a diverse workforce?
    • What do you do in tough times? How do you make decisions about what you invest in during those times?
    • Most business owners know they need to make changes but few people take real action.
    • Many people only push change when it benefits them or affects something important to them.

[58:55] “Change happens because you want to change, change doesn't happen because you…should change [or] other people want you to change. Change happens because it becomes essential to you.” - Click Here to Tweet This[01:00:09] Serving the People: How Athena Alliance Can Help You
    • Companies can use Athena Alliance to hire diverse executives. They can post on their platforms for free.
    • Looking for a more diverse workforce can be challenging because of pipeline problems, but it's possible. You just have to go out and find them.
    • Athena Alliance welcomes people from all different kinds of industries.

    [01:03:48] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • Coco believes more people need to be willing to seek information.
    • She dislikes cancel culture because it doesn’t help anyone.
    • Coco believes we need to be empathetic when communicating with others.

    • Despite taking steps to achieve their dream life, they faced failure. For them, success revolved around their family unit before building more layers of success around them.
    • They felt successful in their marriage and relationship. Johnny and his wife grew closer despite the struggles and losses of a hard life.
    • On the outside, they lived a seemingly successful life. However, they kept their experience of losing their children to themselves.
    • For Johnny and his wife, it was lonely only to be able to talk to each other about their struggles with infertility.
    • Losing their children led them to reassess and redefine their lives. They had reached the worst it could get, even while life was hard.

[15:07] “We can stay here and this is as bad as it could ever get, even as life continued to be hard.” - Click Here to Tweet This[16:35] A Clearer Perspective on Life
    • After their experience, Johnny and his wife gained clarity and a new perspective on the issues of a hard life.
    • Having gratitude was a necessity for them to survive. Without it, they would continue to rest in dark thoughts and struggle to function.
    • They were grateful for the blessing of being the triplet's parents.
    • Johnny and his wife stopped looking at their lives as a tragedy. Instead remembered how the triplets had positively impacted their energy.
    • The more they looked for it, the more they saw the beauty in the world. They acknowledged and celebrated these good things to get them to the next day.

[20:07] “There were so many good things that came out of it that we needed to start celebrating. […] And we need to embrace it and hold on to them because those are the thoughts that got us to the next day.” - Click Here to Tweet This[21:16] How Johnny’s Journey and Hard Life Impacted His Faith
    • Johnny and his wife were both raised in homes of faith. It was critical in their lives and part of their marriage,
    • They were able to experience genuine sorrow and despair from their loss. That allowed their faith to grow stronger.
    • Both of them grew up blessed and unconditionally loved and supported. What they went through helped them empathize and understand others better.
    • It shaped Johnny as a leader. He loves to influence people and lead them in a mindful way of their lives outside of work.

[25:05] How the Journey Shaped Johnny
    • What he went through helped him realize his impact and influence on others. He realized he was responsible for his employees and their households.
    • This realization upped his sense of responsibility. It wasn't about just him anymore but all these people who relied on him.
    • It affected him negatively. There was pressure, anxiety, and the heavy weight of responsibility as a leader and business owner.
    • Looking back, Johnny wished he had been more of a whole person when he was younger and developed himself rather than focusing intensely on his career.
    • With that journey, Johnny retired and continued being financially focused. He wouldn't have been able to realize that, at 50, it was time to go.

    [31:32] When Enough is Enough
    • Tim recognized that the moments of the journey were much more important than the place you were going.
    • Sometimes, when you set a goal and quickly get there, you think more is needed and continue to reach higher.
    • Johnny is working to become comfortable in the uncomfortable. There is a challenge in it.
    • He realized that he needed to manage his thoughts and realize that it was enough. Rather than wishing for more, he takes what he can have and sees its beauty.
    • Ask for more — but only sometimes.

[34:40] “Why can't that be enough, right? […] And there was beauty in it, there was grace in it and there was wonder and amazement, what God created through us.” - Click Here to Tweet This[37:39] The Catalyst That Changes Your Life
    • Johnny wouldn't be the man he is today without his many experiences. Everyone, like him, is shaped by their journeys.
    • He doesn't even know who his authentic self is and continues to evolve. His actions and words are from the seeds of the people who had influenced him throughout his life.
    • Catalysts can be an adverse event where you have to look in the mirror and redefine what makes you, you.
    • You can also be your catalyst. Don't wait for it to happen. Look in the mirror now to examine what's in front of you.
    • As a leadership coach, Johnny holds that mirror up for someone else. He brings out the best in them to become an authority figure rather than a person with just a title.

[40:17] “You can have that hard look in the mirror, and be your own catalyst to say, ‘let's really examine what I see in front of me.’ ” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:54] Johnny’s Journey in the RV Industry
    • His dad was one of the pioneer dealers. Johnny grew up in the industry and ended up working there as well.
    • Johnny might find that the RV lifestyle isn't for him. However, he loves how it impacts other families and the beautiful experience of living and traveling in the comfort of home.
    • Johnny was one of the first dealers contacted about the expansion of Camping World's dealerships. Over time, he rose to the position of president.
    • Industries experience ups and downs. Right now, the RV industry might be going down. However, it will always bounce back.
    • Johnny was able to meet great people in the industry. Americans love the RV lifestyle, so it continues to stay and grow.

    [50:34] Johnny’s Passion Projects
    • Johnny's passion projects include the spirit industry, a medical trial, online businesses, clothing, and interior design.
    • Every day is diverse and different. He goes to work and focuses on other things that he can do.
    • Johnny feels indeed repurposed. He felt called to venture out and do different things in the given time God had left him.
    • There are days when he misses what he used to do. However, there are seasons of life. You can step back into the past, but it's important not to dwell and focus on it.

    [55:11] The Successful Family Life
    • Johnny and his wife now consider themselves to have had a successful life. They had a complete family with a solid marriage and three children who had all grown up.
    • Their kids struggle with medical issues that impact how they live every day.
    • However, he remembers that life is hard, but they'll also be okay. That was a lesson he wanted his kids to learn.

    [58:33] Excited to Create
    • At 56, Johnny is at the creating stage of his life.
    • It's a time when he wants to create new relationships. Johnny strives to make a meaningful impact and create change.
    • There was a time when he was seeking and going. Now, he is all about creating.

    About Joe

Joe Caruso is an author, business adviser, and speaker. He is a renowned expert in leadership and individual and collective mind development. Joe is also the founder of Caruso Leadership, where he uses his expertise to create change within businesses and organizations.

Joe went through his cataclysmic event at eighteen when he was diagnosed with "incurable" cancer. That pushed him to start studying life from the works of philosophers, leaders, religions, and ancient cultures. Using what he learned, Joe wrote the best-selling book The Power of Losing Control and will release his new book, Narrative Wins, this year.

Learn more about Joe and his journey when you visit his website. Connect with him on LinkedIn.

Episode Highlights[03:16] Learning More About Joe
    • Joe lives his best life and enjoys what he can do.
    • He promised to hone his mind and fulfilled that promise by studying for himself five hours a day, five days a week.
    • Joe learned how a leader could understand their mind and the individual and collective minds they influence.
    • Leading isn't managing. Being a leader means understanding how people think individually and in a group to help them move forward.
    • Joe didn't like to study in the past. Now he's focused on learning more about himself.

    [07:41] Same, but Different
    • All people have similarities, but each mind has a unique experience and a different way of defining everything.
    • Only you can understand who you are and where you are. You have to seek answers about yourself.
    • However, most people choose not to because they're scared.

[08:32] "I live my life to the best of my ability to help myself and other people and enjoy it." - Click Here to Tweet This[11:40] What Joe Almost Missed
    • In 1978, Joe was in excellent physical condition when he got sick and was diagnosed with a then "incurable" cancer.
    • People told him to prepare for death. When Joe realized he would die, he understood that he would miss out on the life other people would find.
    • Joe pushed through with surgeries and risky, experimental chemotherapy. Despite the odds, he survived and kept his promise to study.
    • He then put his thoughts into words, creating a life changing book.

    [17:08] A Different Joe
    • Joe was confident in himself. However, being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing experimental treatment humbled Joe.
    • Humility is the key to learning.
    • He wouldn't be the same person if he didn't experience this struggle to survive.
    • It taught Joe humility and pushed him to tap into his curiosity.
    • You don't need a cataclysmic event to do something life changing for yourself.

[18:44] "We don't pride ourselves to our lessons. we humble ourselves to our lessons." - Click Here to Tweet This

    [23:55] Making Memories
    • Joe tells the story of how he once ran into the lead singer of the Bangles.
    • He shares how, afterward, another guy approached him to talk. He had recognized him as part of the band that played at his wedding.
    • Joe was part of someone else's significant memory.
    • Remember that you never know when you're making someone else's life changing memory.

[28:28] "You never know when you're making someone else's memory. Keep that in mind." - Click Here to Tweet This

    [28:36] Learning to Study
    • Books are one way to learn. The Story of Philosophy was the first book Joe picked up.
    • He chose this book because he wanted to learn timeless human truths.
    • As you understand, you need to filter through the many voices. Practice healthy skepticism and think about the new ideas you receive before accepting or refusing them.
    • Being a skeptic is like eating hot mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving. A new idea can be too much at first, but as you hold it in and let it cool, it's easier to swallow and digest.

[36:42] The Life Changing Power of Your Narrative
    • Joe remembers when his family would gather, and he would listen to his father tell stories. He was a great storyteller and Joe's best friend and mentor.
    • It is challenging to understand something in your mind all by itself. It helps to contextualize it.
    • The narrative wins. The stories you tell yourself often determine what you like or don't like.

    [42:59] The Importance of Concision
    • The narratives you tell can be short. You can tell a story in as little as six words.
    • Joe recalls when he met Earnie Shavers, a heavy-hitting boxer who fought well against Muhammad Ali but still lost.
    • Earnie and Joe talked about what Ali told him. With two words, Ali could convey that Earnie wouldn't beat him that night.
    • That was the power and concision of a story.
    • The best leaders can tell the right story to the right audience at the right time.

[50:07] "Quintessential leaders tell the right story to the right person at the right time in the right way for the right reason." - Click Here to Tweet This

    [51:40] Understanding Stories
    • A Rolodex is a rotating card file device that stores cards with business contact information.
    • These days, people read less and have difficulty understanding stories.
    • The fastest way to unite people is through common hatred. People showed that they were good based on how bad another person was.
    • Joe was picked on in the past because those people wanted to look cool.

[54:24] Learning to Tell Life Changing Stories
    • Every meaning you create and every story you tell revolves around you. Learning more about yourself can help you better understand the stories you tell yourself.
    • Another story Joe tells is how the Caruso surname ruined a road trip with his brothers. He contextualizes it by explaining the origins of their surname.
    • Memories are only sometimes correct. Stories are also embellished to emphasize certain parts.
    • Talking to the minds of others is vital for a leader.
    • Study how to use metaphors and storytelling. That's the language that the mind understands.

[59:19] "Study how to use metaphor and story because that's how we think. You got to talk to the mind in the language the mind understands." - Click Here to Tweet This

[01:00:41] The Four Rules of Engagement
    • When people speak, some try to entertain while others inspire. The rules of engagement can help you talk to inspire.
    • The first two rules of engagement are that everyone is always right and wants to be right.
    • The third and fourth rule says you can't change a person's mind. You can only help them shift their perspective.
    • You can start this shift by providing context. With this context, a person can choose to change their mind.

    [01:07:25] The Importance of Seeking
    • Seek here, then you can see there.

    • Leadership was the heart of her studies. Bessi wanted to understand the impact and influence of a leader.
    • She worked with different organizations tackling significant issues in the world. She consciously chose to work with and understand the bigger system and its players.

    • Tune in to the episode to learn more about Bessi and the journey that helped her find her definition of success.

[09:01] "If we want to have an impact in the world, part of what I want to understand is how do we influence?" - Click Here To Tweet This[15:08] What Creates Positive Impact
    • People want to make the maximum impact. It's their inner want to do something and do it well.
    • It's essential to know how to measure and manage your impact. This way, you know if you're truly creating a change in the world.
    • Different people's influence, ideas, and support all contribute to making a positive impact.
    • You must be clear on what part of the impact you are contributing.

[18:06] Enjoying the Seasons of Life
    • Sometimes there are seasons in your life when your choices lead to something unexpected.
    • Bessi remembers when her children were younger, and they drove in a camper van. Life may not seem appealing at that time, but she loved it.
    • Back then, she would reflect and think that her future self would wish she was back in those days.
    • The ability to reflect on the seasons of life can help you have a broader view and enjoy what's in the present.
    • Bessi is an achiever. Achievers often have a whisper of discontent. However, she can be grateful for the present while looking forward to where she will be.

[19:02] "But because of the choices that you've made and the things that you're prioritizing in this season, life doesn't actually look like what you thought it would." - Click Here To Tweet This[23:30] Gender in Leadership
    • It's up to you to have the wisdom and discernment to make good decisions regardless of gender.
    • Bessi has experienced discrimination due to her gender. While her male co-founder received praise, her co-workers told her that her work was unimportant.
    • People sometimes aren't aware of the double standards.
    • Avoid making assumptions about other people. Take the time to ask and understand their version of a successful and fulfilling life.
    • Bessi was the breadwinner in their family, and her husband was the primary caregiver. They learned that many struggles were role-based and not actually about gender.

[28:35] "I think we need to take the time to be curious and ask questions and understand someone's context and what their version of success or a fulfilling life is." - Click Here To Tweet This[31:24] Living Your Success
    • Bessi works with business leaders who seem successful. However, they can feel disconnected and lost about the future.
    • It can be challenging for established leaders to talk publicly about their problems. There are no safe spaces where they can find support.
    • Leaders are typically driven and focused achievers. If they don't take time to reflect, they chase after what society says will bring satisfaction.
    • You won't find fulfillment by seeking more money or a higher position; external joy isn’t satisfying.
    • Instead, it's time to start thinking about what you're ultimately trying to create. Go back to a fuller sense of who you are to have both freedom and fulfillment.

[36:25] Moving Towards A Place of Impact[36:27] "The reality is that it's about starting to think and not just being one-dimensional. But to come back to a fuller sense of who you are." - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Making a positive impact can be different for each individual. Avoid living someone else's idea of a successful life.
    • To do this, you must attempt to understand yourself and develop a richer sense of freedom and fulfillment as early as possible.
    • Ask questions that look internally instead of externally. Start breaking the mindset that you must choose between making money or doing good.
    • Whether you're still building your business or already well established, you can choose to bring good back into the business.
    • Business leaders have significant effects on their businesses. The decisions they make and the responsibilities under their control can be an agent of change.

[41:47] "This is us taking responsibility for the things that are within our control and the decisions that we make." - Click Here To Tweet This[45:48] Aspirational Values vs. Core Values
    • It's critical to think about the values you truly have. Just communicating that you have these values doesn't make it the truth.
    • Aspirational values are values you don't display yet but need to be present to succeed. Now, you must see what that looks like and work towards it.
    • On the other hand, core values are deeply rooted and already in your behavior. You can see it in how you behave and make decisions. These values can distinguish you.
    • At times, you may take these core values too far.
    • These values become a foundation you can return to when making decisions. With them, you can feel aligned with who you are and who you want to be.

    [51:40] Hope in Today's Leaders
    • There's a lot of frustration and disappointment in leadership. These come from leaders who don't take responsibility and only do what's best within a short timeframe.
    • The role of a leader is someone who acts not for the position but to contribute to moving forward.
    • Fortunately, more and more leaders are starting to think about their realm of influence. They're asking what decisions they can make that can make a positive impact.
    • Additionally, more and more consumers are also demanding increasing awareness among businesses.
    • All this is building up to encourage more people to start their journey of changing the world.

    [56:56] The Both/And Aspect
    • The heart of Bessi's work is the idea that you can bring doing good and making money together.
    • Shift your mindset. Both/And encourages people to think differently.
    • The podcast inspires listeners to slow down and reflect. Taking your time can make you a more efficient leader and make better decisions.

    [01:04:16] Clarity Through Seeking
    • Bessi’s preferred word is “seek” because it goes back to her experiences of seeking and awareness.
    • People need to be more reflective and clarify their values and vision.
    • You can do this by taking the time to reflect and seek.

    [10:17] Embracing and Keeping Presence
    • During family time and celebration, Robin’s wife encourages them to put their phones away.
    • They stay present through conversations about their favorite memories. It allows them to tap into where they are and what’s important to them.
    • We need face-to-face conversations to express our God-given humanity.

[12:07] “That thing that at a level that does kick you back is face-to-face kind of conversation that I think they’re hungering for.” - Click Here To Tweet This[13:24] Becoming an Episcopal Minister
    • Robin was raised Episcopalian. At first, he didn’t truly understand worship.
    • He spent a lot of time seeking to understand better amid rocky circumstances.
    • He ended up working in an Episcopal Boys Home, where he became interested in attending a seminary.
    • Robin’s wife was his glue. Their marriage was largely rooted in the Church, and it became their protective bubble.

    [20:36] God's Work Within You
    • Robin was often called back to leadership to help him figure out what was happening within himself or within the parish.
    • To do the work of God, God worked on Robin during his time in the seminary.

    • It’s important to gain each other’s trust. However, there is still so much distrust within and outside of the Church.
    • Robin has seen the shifts between generations.
    • Nowadays, there’s an emphasis on individuality, integrity, identity, and autonomy. Unfortunately, this has also started breaking the Church’s sense of community.
    • Issues have evolved with time, and we need a different leadership to address them. Trust needs to be earned and is not just given.

    [28:12] Individualistic Faith
    • These days, people are more focused on their personal lives and situations. This same focus applies to their faith in God and Jesus.
    • People need to have conversations about their spirituality and religion. They need to talk about the truth of each person, their religion, and their faith.
    • Individual truths can also lead to conflict.
    • Robin deals with this conflict by listening and really trying to understand. This ability to listen, ask, and converse is a gift from God.

[32:57] Consuming Consumers vs. Serving Servants
    • Many people look at what they can get rather than what they can give.
    • The world has become consumer-driven. Even churchgoers want facilities to accommodate their different wants and needs.
    • People want material things and comfort. They don’t want to sacrifice their wants to have a place to worship God.
    • However, you shouldn’t be friends with the world but be friends with God.

    • The community can be unattractive because of many cross-generational issues across different organizations.
    • Cultural shifts have a significant impact on the Church.
    • The Bible is a source of theology. Unfortunately, few find reading the Bible attractive.
    • Instead, people mainly get information from other sources like social media.

    [46:17] What Faith Offers
    • Robin first started seminary in a cathedral in Memphis, Tennessee. They mainly preached about reconciliation and reconnection.
    • Worship is derived from the same word as worth. Robin found worth in worship and met like-minded people within the community.
    • A faith-based community strengthens you. You can still get freedom and individuality within the context of faith and community.
    • The passion of the Church is based on Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God the Father.
    • The message of the gospel is powerful and attractive.

[49:49] “People want something else. They want their freedom. They want their individuality. [But] you can get all that within the context of a community and within the context of our faith.” - Click Here To Tweet This[53:49] The Importance of Mentoring
    • The underlying themes of the book of James are mentoring and asking deeper questions.
    • It is through mentoring that we can build a generational bridge of faith. James encourages the people of the Church to do it as well.
    • Robin is passionate about serving. He is active in a faith-based counseling center where he witnesses the unfortunate state of the younger generations.
    • You need to appeal to and connect with people through their needs. Help others reach the things they seek.

    [59:41] A Mentor’s Conversation
    • Mentoring means being present with your mentee. These days, speakers aim to reach a bigger audience instead of being present and focused.
    • From a mentoring standpoint, a conversation can change and focus on different topics.
    • Talk about each other’s growth as Christians and how the Church can grow in more ways than in money or number.
    • As a last topic, you can focus on hope and what it can look like.
    • You’re presenting Jesus and the Church through the conversation. Jesus is calling them to follow Him.

    [01:02:11] What Gives Robin Hope
    • For Robin, “hope” is expecting something good to happen. His lowest points weren’t hopeless.
    • Robin has learned that God is good. He always hopes that God is in his life.
