    About Shayna

Shayna Rattler is an ordained prophet, author, and speaker whose purpose is to help others’ dreams come true. Shayna has worked with a variety of people, from celebrities to entrepreneurs, on their journey to achieve personal growth and excellence. She empowers individuals and organizations to experience a God shift from disruption toward their greater destiny.

Shayna has written four books, including A God Shift: Divine Move From Disruption to Destiny to show how difficulties can become your God shift moment. She is also the host of the podcast and TV Show, A God Shift, where she continues to share her message.

You can learn more about Shayna and the God Shift Movement on her website and Instagram.

Episode Highlights[02:02] Let’s Hear from Shayna
    • Shayna works to transform Christian lives. As a preacher, she shares information and helps others implement it in their lives.
    • The Church struggles to step away from tradition, often avoiding change and only teaching people how they can grow in place.
    • It’s important for those who recognize these gaps to help fill them in.
    • Create a place where people keep growing even outside the Church.

[07:52] “We're taught all these things about God, but we're not taught how to move.” - Click Here To Tweet This[08:47] Giving God 145%
    • Shayna was raised by her grandmother and father. Back then, she didn’t truly grow up in church, nor did she realize what it meant to live for God.
    • Shayna didn’t seek God for herself until her 20s. It wasn’t until her early 30s that she started living according to the Word.
    • At that time, she realized that she didn’t give her all on the most important part of her life — her walk with God.
    • When Shayna was called to the ministry, she was shocked and hesitant. She didn’t grow up in church and felt unqualified for the role.

    [14:44] Shayna’s God Shift
    • Shayna knew that every spiritual principle has an application. When she started seeking God, she applied what she learned from the Word to her life.
    • Similarly, Tim started seeking God by regularly reading a chapter from Proverbs.
    • Too often, people sit back and let God do everything because of His power and control.
    • However, you also have a role to play in your relationship with God.
    • Shayna found that her mouth was her most powerful weapon. She had never been quiet, but she learned to align what she has to say with where she wanted to go.

[17:39] “What I say to people now is that we have to recognize that we have a role in God's will for our lives.” - Click Here To Tweet This[20:39] Trials in Life
    • Hardships and disruptions are a part of life.
    • Things don’t always go smoothly for Shayna. It’s through looking back that she can understand her experiences better.
    • God always answers your prayers. However, He doesn’t always answer them the way you expect Him to.
    • Regardless of her current circumstances, Shayna recognizes she has a lot to be grateful for.

    [25:50] From Business to Ministry
    • Shayna’s work as a business coach was thriving. Things took a turn in 2018 when the business started drying up, leading to her God shift calling into ministry.
    • She had just spent thousands for her book launch before her business slowed down. It was this disruption that called her attention to God’s call.
    • With not much going on in her business, Shayna could focus on answering God’s call.
    • The transition was not smooth, but she was able to work as an occupational therapist in between.

    [33:09] Shayna’s Purpose and Personality
    • Shayna is known for her high energy and task-driven personality.
    • Her drive means she’s always in action. However, this can also mean she can quickly start taking action in the wrong direction.
    • In 2019, Shayna went on a spiritual retreat where she received a vision of what her ministry will look like. Unfortunately, she looked at it through the lens of a business coach.
    • Your purpose (why you’re here) will always stay the same and lead you to your destiny. Shayna’s purpose is to help people’s dreams come true.
    • Meanwhile, your assignment (who you’re called to help) will keep on changing. Your calling (how you help people) can also vary.

[40:43] What It Means to Experience a God Shift Moment
    • A God shift is a moment or disruption in your life that follows God’s purpose for you.
    • God is committed to putting you on the right path. It’s through disruption that He invites you to focus on taking the next steps in the right direction.
    • She realized she helps people with their God shift moments. Shayna then took action to bring this new movement into reality.
    • Don’t let God do all the work. Reflect and see what you can do in your partnership with God.

[44:35] “Look to yourself and say ‘what is it that I also can be doing in order to partner with God to go where He wants me to go?” - Click Here To Tweet This[45:27] Disruption or the Devil?
    • People have the tendency to blame everything on the devil. However, we’re not always under attack. Sometimes we can be under alert.
    • You can discern if it’s from God through the Word and prayer.
    • When your circumstances align with your prayers and God’s Word, that is God calling your attention
    • Don’t get stuck trying to figure it out. If it’s not against God’s Word, you can take action and see how He responds.
    • You don’t always need to see what’s in the distance. He will show you where you need to go.

    [50:28] Your Destiny Blockers
    • Destiny blockers stop you from going where God wants you to go. These include timing and people’s preference for comfort and predictability.
    • Don’t be the person who always wants the easy way through.
    • We all want solutions for our problems. However, no one truly has a completely comfortable and predictable life.
    • If you focus on staying in your comfort zone, you won’t be able to follow God’s path for you.

[51:11] “I think we have to stop being people who think that we're going to have a map for everything that we do.” - Click Here To Tweet This[53:58] The Parents’ Push
    • Parents want a better life for their children. Rather than giving them a safety net, give them room to make mistakes and learn.
    • God wants to give us everything we want. However, He also wants us to grow and mature.

[59:09] What You Can Learn from the God Shift Movement
    • The God Shift Movement reminds you that you have the authority. It’s up to you to take the right path.
    • Unfortunately, many of us have not learned how to build and exercise our authority.
    • Shayna wants you to overcome adversity, grow faith, and make your dreams come true with God Shift.
    • Check out Shayna’s guide to learn more about the four shifts.

[01:00:36] “While we're waiting to see what God is going to do next, He’s saying, ‘No, I'm waiting to see what you're going to do with what it is that I've already given you.’” - Click Here To Tweet This[01:02:26] Go to Grow
    • The only way to gain traction is to go.
    • Figure out where you need to go next and move toward it with all aspects of your life.
    • Seek, go, and create is a process. Though she can always seek and create, it’s through ‘go’ that she can move forward with what she found and what she created.

    Episode Highlights[01:56] About Manish Bundhun
    • Manish helps people excel, grow, and thrive in whatever they do — especially in their work.
    • Human Resources, coaching, and change are Manish’s specialties.
    • Manish comes from Mauritius, which boasts a diverse range of peoples and cultures within it.
    • He works for the Rogers Group, a company that’s been running for more than a hundred years. It’s a diverse group with multiple interests across over a dozen countries.

[10:42] The Changing Landscape of What Workers Want
    • People awoke to a greater sense of purpose due to the mass-scale concerns regarding safety, security, and health.
    • Employees today want to find meaning in their work, and businesses today have had to adapt to that need.
    • The 2008 recession pushed companies to decrease costs, but the 2020 pandemic was an economic, health, and social crisis.
    • Cross-generational management is more of a challenge, as every generation has different needs driving them. Today's generations are more people-centric.
    • According to Manish, the old goal of operational efficiency doesn't connect with anyone because it benefits no one except a few shareholders.

[12:06] “The pandemic has been a portal for transformation for a lot of people. It has awakened people to a stronger sense of purpose.” - Click Here to Tweet This[16:49] Defining Human Resources
    • The term “human capital” is impersonal; human resources means people.
    • People are the center of your organization: employees who create value and the customers for whom you create value.
    • How does your company attract talent? Success today requires mastering the people equation from both sides.

[18:45] “How are you able to attract talent? Are you able to grow talent? And how are you able to engage your talents from the Human Resources perspective? The ones who are able to differentiate themselves on that are the ones who are going to win in this age.” - Click Here to Tweet This[19:52] Transitioning to a People-Centric Culture
    • According to Manish, people are the way forward.
    • There are three elements around people operations: your company’s services, people’s perspectives on your organization, and the experience you create.
    • Being people-centric is about culture. However, shaping culture is an evolution rather than a revolution; it does not happen overnight.
    • Leadership is culture.

[24:23] Insights from a Corporate Monk
    • Being a corporate monk isn't something Manish learned from school. It's about being non-judgmental, accepting, and present in current situations.
    • According to Manish, we don’t learn from experience. Instead, we learn by reflecting on experience.
    • Take time for yourself. Self-care is not selfish — you need it to thrive.
    • Be clear on your purpose and how you add value.
    • Manish suggests having a routine. A routine includes having healthy boundaries and helps him be effective in what he does. Ask yourself: what will you say no to?

[30:06] “Take time for yourself. That self care is not selfish. And self care is essential for you to thrive in whatever you do.” - Click Here to Tweet This[31:56] Intentionality Around Performing Tasks
    • Writing methods vary per person. Some people prefer to have 100% focus on writing. Manish likes having a dedicated time and routine.
    • Human beings cannot multitask; what people are actually doing is task-switching, which drains mental energy.
    • A clear mind lets you become more intentional and focus your energy.
    • Find what works for you.

[37:10] How to Read Manish’s Books
    • Manish wanted to provide a quick boost with every practical insight in Shots of Insights.
    • As a book, Shots of Insights lets you distribute the insights you receive over multiple days.
    • The catalyst for writing Disruptor was Manish's experience with Rogers of trying to shape a more agile culture. Disruptor takes a more proactive approach.
    • People today feel disrupted rather than like disruptors. We can’t step out of our comfort zone; instead, we should try to stretch it.

[40:45] “Being agile means being proactive, more than being reactive. It means anticipation plus action, rather than just action when things happen.” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:39] Abilities and Agility
    • Abilities are not personality traits. Being disruptive isn't an inborn trait — it's a learned behavior.
    • Leadership and disruptiveness are elements that people can develop.
    • Agility means outperforming the environment. It’s linked to how you see, read, and understand your environment.
    • According to Manish, agility is in our DNA. As human beings, we are intrinsically capable of adapting to any situation.
    • Listen to the full episode for Manish’s octopus analogy on agility!

[51:03] Straight Talk: A Critical Skill
    • Straight talk is three conversations in one: you talk about your observations, impact implications, and the future.
    • If we don’t speak up, someone else will dominate the conversation.
    • Different generations have different communication styles.
    • Speak from the heart, and speak a meaningful truth. Nelson Mandela is an excellent example of someone who uses straight talk.

[54:38] “The one who is able to command airspace airtime is the one who gets most attention.” - Click Here to Tweet This[59:06] Manish Moving Forward
    • Manish’s next book is titled Architects of Opportunity.
    • It’s related to entrepreneurship but focuses more on intrapreneurship and change.
    • Manish's preferred word is "Seek."
    • Seeking has changed Manish's life positively. The answers he sought were within him.

Episode Highlights[02:35] What Does Susan Do?

    • When your spirit, soul, and body are in alignment, then you can you work on aligning with your business assignment.
    • There are three primary business assignments: income, influence, and impact. It’s important to know which assignment aligns with you; the other two will follow.
    • Susan approaches her work as a business alignment therapist from the perspective of her faith and belief in God.

[03:44] “Working with my clients, we first focus on them as the person and get that alignment of the spirit, soul, and body. What does that look like to be spirit-led and operate in that way? Then looking at their business, we also want to be in alignment with their business assignment.” - Click Here To Tweet This[05:33] Growing Up with Susan
    • At a young age, Susan went through early childhood trauma.
    • Therapy helped her greatly, and she realized she wanted to help people the same way.
    • The hardships and struggles you go through can become God’s way of leading you to the right path.
    • Susan believes that her path always led to helping others through her profession.

    [12:40] Faith Shaping Lives
    • Susan has devoutly attended church from a young age. However, it wasn’t until eight years ago that she grew to understand her faith and connect with the Lord.
    • At that time, she was unhappy with her life and realized she needed to make a change. Susan prayed to God and asked.
    • Susan never doubted God, but she never truly understood what salvation in Him brings. God opened her eyes and answered her prayers.

    [16:58] Choosing to Change
    • A catalytic event pushes people to make a change, including Tim.
    • It’s rare for people focused on growth and development to change and try new things intentionally.
    • Before the crossroads that led Susan to today, she spent her mornings with the Lord. That was how He invited her to become a coach.
    • She didn’t understand at first what it means to be a coach. Fortunately, she met someone who helped therapists become coaches.

[20:26] What It Means to be a Counselor and a Coach
    • People often lump together counselors, therapists, coaches, and other similar professions.
    • Counseling is more reflective and focused on the past. On the other hand, coaching guides people to look at the present and the future.
    • Susan has experience as a counselor and as a coach. Her experience and expertise allow her to help her clients fully through the past, present, and future.

[23:16] “I love that I have the comparison of [coaching and counseling]. And I love that I can do both and I think it helps my clients so much more as well. Because inevitably, there's something that comes up that is related to your past that's now impacting your present.” - Click Here To Tweet This[26:18] Kingdom Principles
    • Susan doesn’t shy away from doing her work with a Christian perspective.
    • To best support her clients, Susan prayed to God for help in finding the right words to use.
    • The term rest conveys what it means to work from God’s rest. It’s not just about physically resting; it’s for the spirit, the soul, and the body.
    • Religion tends to tell people to work for God. However, what He truly wants is for people to work with Him.
    • Rest means letting go of rules and checklists and choosing to work from a place without overwhelm or stress.

[29:51] “[God] told me, ‘Religion tells people to work for me. But I want people to work with me.’ It was like my eyes just opened to this whole world of relationships and partnerships, and rest is really just letting go of those rules, letting go of the checkboxes.” - Click Here To Tweet This[32:10] The Hustle Mentality
    • Many people make an idol out of their performance, work, and effort.
    • Society holds performance in high regard. This mindset spurs people to work without rest, thus falling into stress and overwhelm.
    • The culture has been built to be even more challenging for women. They have to juggle expectations in professional and household responsibilities.
    • You have to be intentional; talk to your spouse about expectations.

[39:30] The Kingdom of God and the System of Darkness
    • Susan and Tim define the two realms as the Kingdom of God and the System of Darkness.
    • Jesus came down from heaven to help people understand salvation and the Kingdom of God.
    • Salvation is not the end. It is merely the doorway for believers to receive the inheritance of the Kingdom.

    [45:07] God Loves You
    • Susan helps her client realize that God wants a relationship with them.
    • You don’t have to earn or perform well to receive God’s love.
    • While it seems easy, simply receiving is an obstacle many people face.
    • God is not asking for anything in return. Let Him love you and allow that to build a trusting relationship with Him.

[47:14]  “God doesn't ask for anything back. We're not obligated at all to love him. And that's where I find the hardest part for people — just letting him love you and building that trusting relationship with him.” - Click Here To Tweet This[48:15] Being God’s Child
    • People often struggle to understand God’s love. Many don’t believe they are lovable.
    • Your soul consists of your mind, will, and emotions. It takes time and effort to adjust and change the way of thinking your soul has felt in the past.
    • When you align with the spirit, you’re shifting your soul to receive God’s love. You’ll then understand what it means to be one of God’s children.

[52:20] The Foundations of a Relationship With God
    • Love and trust are the foundation of your relationship with the Lord. Unfortunately, not many people fully trust Him.
    • You can build trust when you believe in His love.
    • Many of society’s systems, including the Church, can hinder the development of this relationship.
    • The pandemic has led to significant changes in the Church. It’s the beginning of the reformation that we need to move forward in the right direction.
    • Susan is helping people walk along their path and fulfill their assignment in the Kingdom of God.

    [01:00:26] What You Can Do
    • Start building a personal relationship with God by intentionally reading the Bible.
    • Take a verse and dive deep into it. Ask the Holy Spirit for insight to learn more.
    • Reading the Bible is not just about gaining knowledge. You also talk to the Holy Spirit, thus helping you cultivate your relationship with God.
    • The System of Darkness may use noise to draw you away from God. When you are quiet, you’ll find yourself able to talk and interact with the Lord.
    • Intentionally and personally build your relationship with God.

    [01:01:26] A Prayer for You
    • Susan ends the episode with a prayer to help you understand and build your relationship with God.
    • Listen to the episode and take your time to pray with her.
    • Susan continuously seeks the kingdom of God and God Himself.

[01:02:35] “You're getting knowledge from the Bible. But you're also cultivating that relationship with God when you're continually asking Holy Spirit to reveal things to you.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    2. Discover the Redefining Success System and how you can thrive in challenging times through the five steps of tactics, strategy, mission, purpose, and identity.

Episode Highlights[00:44] Current Challenges for Leaders
    • We're facing unprecedented times when people are transitioning from the pandemic and experiencing challenging economic times.
    • Tim observes we are currently going through a recession.
    • He shares his experiences in a conference for real estate investors where the industry was doing well until around April-May 2022 but suddenly facing huge challenges.
    • Before the pandemic, good leaders and organizations could get great results because of the atmosphere. Now, even good leaders are struggling to succeed.
    • We all say "normal" is pre-pandemic, but we must face the reality that life will never be the same.

[09:24] Redefining Your Success in 5 Steps
    • Becoming successful requires tactics, strategies, mission, purpose, and identity.
    • Most teams and leaders stay in the tactical zone; only some move up to the strategic level.
    • Strategy is when you can think far ahead and strategize regarding where you're going.
    • Your mission is your bigger picture assignment; your purpose is what you're created for.
    • Finally, identity is knowing who you are.

[13:25] Know Your Identity [13:30] “Just because we say it in a sentence, or we come up with a nice, cute saying for a purpose, or vision statement, that doesn't mean when you look in the mirror, it's who you really believe that you are.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Many organizations have mission and purpose statements, but these statements don't necessarily align with what they really are.
    • There are only two identities people can have — orphan or adopted.
    • The orphan identity means you do not have a connection to God, while an adopted identity indicates an understanding of your part in God’s creation.
    • It will benefit you to reflect on your organization's identity. In the full episode, Tim shares a couple of questions to guide you.
    • Remember, God created you for something great.

[16:43] “You are created for something great. And I believe you are created by a heavenly Father that loves you and wants the best for you...That is one of the most important things that we can understand about ourselves, and that we can understand as a truth.” - Click Here to Tweet This[18:12] How to Stand Out and Thrive
    • Strategic people can stand out in a world where most people are tactical.
    • Remember, we’re going through a time when we can’t just be good with tactics.
    • Organizations and leaders can realign themselves, but you may need help from a coach or consultants. Don't hesitate to reach out.

[20:38] “Try to do things on your own [and] try to make some adjustments. But if you need some help, don't hesitate to reach out and get it.” - Click Here to Tweet This[22:20] Develop Your Identity, Purpose, and Mission
    • Most people don’t understand who they are. Make the time to reflect on your identity.
    • Tim shares that he's an ambassador for God. His identity spills over to all areas of his life.
    • Since Tim’s purpose is to be an ambassador, he relies on his communication skills to spread God’s Word.
    • His mission has changed over time, but his purpose remains the same.
    • Knowing your identity, purpose, and mission will then affect how you create strategy and tactics. For Tim, this means establishing Seek Go Create and writing books.

[27:06] “If I were to just do the tactics without understanding all the other things, then it makes it fuzzy or unclear as to why I'm doing it and what I'm doing, and how it fits together.” - Click Here to Tweet This[28:02] Why Organizations Need to Know Their Identity
    • If you’re a leader of an organization, know your identity. Often, this is not your mission and vision statement.
    • For example, we know Chick Fil-a was founded on biblical principles, serves good chicken sandwiches, and has the fastest drive-throughs.
    • On the other hand, Burger King seems to be all over the place and tries to offer all sorts of products.
    • In the airline industry, Southwest Airlines was able to create an identity as low-cost, fun, and quick turnarounds.
    • It’s easier to focus on what to do when your organization has a clear identity.

    [32:59] The Redefining Success System
    • In summary, leaders and organizations need to double down and know the different components that make up the Redefining Success System.
    • First, get clear about your identity and purpose. Then, understand your current mission and assignment.
    • Develop your strategy to accomplish that mission, then create tactics in place to support that strategy.
    • If you improve this system, you'll be better equipped to weather the challenging times.

[33:32] “It's time to step up. It's time for leaders, it's time for organizations to really step up. I really do believe we're about to be stepping into some challenging times…we definitely need to be anchored. And how we do that is we understand what our identity is.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    • It is Tim’s hope that Coach can spur readers to make a change or take action.

Want to know more about Bart? Learn more on his website. You can connect with him through his email or Facebook.

    Episode Highlights[03:55] Bart, the Learner
    • Bart primarily aims to learn and seek.
    • One of the best ways he learns is through conversation and writing. He gains so much every time he talks to other folks and whenever he writes.
    • As an entrepreneur, he started four companies that still stand despite facing numerous challenges.
    • Bart is also a father, a grandfather, and a husband.
    • For many, including Bart, what you do to make money is different than what you do in life.

    [06:48] Singing the Same Songs
    • Survival and stability are the first two stages in life. Once you're stable, people aim for significance in life in the final stage.
    • Bart is currently writing another book about wellness.
    • He wrote his previous book because he wanted to share his experience going through tough times.
    • Everyone is singing the same song about hardships and struggles. While people may experience these songs differently, we can share what we know with each other.
    • Unfortunately, the world splits us apart, making us feel alone in our lives. People should connect with other people.

[07:52] “We're all singing the same song but we’re just on different verses, different places.” - Click Here To Tweet This[09:50] Going Back in Time
    • Zig, a significant influence in Bart's life, once said that he would not change anything in his past.
    • Doing something different in your past might not lead to who you are and where you are today.
    • Bart’s wife helped him through difficult times. Together, they often attended church but weren’t truly present.
    • If he could go back, Bart would tell himself to trust God and talk to him more. Write down your experiences to clear your mind and let it out.
    • Looking back at his journals, Bart realized that many of his hardest times weren't that bad. Often, he realized he overreacted and that these challenges led to good opportunities.

[16:38] To Know and to Trust God
    • You can’t trust somebody you don’t know.
    • Bart didn’t truly know God. Simply attending church, relying on devotionals, and not studying God’s Word can lead to a shallow foundation of trust in God.
    • The way to knowing God is in reading Scripture, pray, be quiet, and listen.
    • When you talk and build a connection with God, you can hear Him more clearly.
    • Bart wakes up in the morning and studies the Bible. He spends 20 minutes just listening and finding that many revelations come to him.

[19:20] “You’ve got to know God and the way you're going to know God is to read His Word, pray, and shut up and be quiet because God does not compete.” - Click Here To Tweet This[21:07] Getting to Know God the Master
    • In August 2000, Bart lost his best friend and business partner. He challenged God and watched his life fall apart.
    • This life-changing experience helped him realize that God was always with him. He kept him from falling deeper,
    • From then on, he truly had faith and trust in God. Bart may sometimes waver, but he never questioned his connection with God nor God’s presence.

[26:03] How Critical is Quiet Time
    • You can't hear what you can't hear. People need peace and quiet to listen and stay sane.
    • No matter where you are, the world is full of constant noise.
    • Bart often sought out time to be quiet. He would sit in his closet as a child or in the stairwells of hotels to escape the world's constant noise.
    • Many people think that headphones and music are already enough for quiet time when it truly isn’t.
    • Nowadays, many things stimulate our brains and fill our minds with noise.

[29:36] About Eager for the Master
    • Simple solutions for personal wellness focus on mental wellness, including quiet time. It's business combined with Scripture.
    • In Psalms, David talks about his desire to be with God. Bart compared it with how his dog, Reign, devotes time and energy to being with Bart.
    • Parallels between the Reign’s trust and need for Bart and people’s faith and seeking of God. It’s that simple.
    • God wants us to trust, believe and obey.
    • People might think that Christianity is limiting. However, Bart finds more fulfillment in his life by maintaining his connection with God than without Him.

[31:44] “I think that's kind of what God wants., if we'll just lay ourselves bare before him belly up and trust Him and seek only to be around him.” - Click Here To Tweet This[34:39] Trials, Triumphs, and Truths
    • Reading the Bible in order opened Bart's eyes to understanding God's letter to humanity better.
    • The Bible is full of wrath, discipline, and chastisement. However, these things are necessary to bring about good and further our connection with God.
    • Both trials and triumphs can get in the way of true faith in the Master. Belief can become thin and brittle during hardship; you can see your true self.
    • The noise of the world can push you away from God if your faith is thin.
    • However, trials open your soul for God to fill with belief and faith, leading you to miraculous changes in your life.

    [40:42] How Bart Writes
    • When Bart was writing Eager for the Master, he made the most out of his morning habit of writing. It’s during this time that he writes and organizes his thoughts into a book.
    • Bart typically writes an outline and takes time to write his other books.
    • Bart says that everybody has the skill to write. It’s up to you to work on it and develop your ability.
    • Each person has a story or message to share that can reach somebody. One of the keys to writing is sharing what you’ve been through to help someone else on the same path.
    • From both Tim and Bart, if you’re feeling the nudge to write, go and just do it!

[45:27] “If you're writing things like you and I are, the whole idea is to share some of what we've been through so it might make the path a little bit less treacherous for the person who has fallen behind us.” - Click Here To Tweet This[46:21] Life Lessons from Eager for the Master
    • The parallels between Reign, Bart's dog and him, and people and God inspired the book.
    • Bart didn't want a dog at first. However, it was the little things that Reign did that led to their relationship growing closer.
    • At first, Reign tended to hide whenever she had a thorn. Over time, she realized that Bart would never be mad at her ; all she had to do was approach them.
    • She was also fascinated by nature. Too often, people get caught up in the noisy world and forget to appreciate the world around them.

[51:13] The Aftereffects of the Global Pandemic
    • During the pandemic, Bart's family moved back from Arizona to his home state of Georgia. So many things have changed since they last lived there.
    • In the six months they've lived there, people now know his name and take the time to talk with him.
    • People in the country stick together. On the other hand, those living in urban areas grew more divided and isolated due to fear and discontent.
    • Bart spoke in Arizona about how you are responsible for bonding with your team. He talked about the importance of overcoming isolation and fear.
    • Some parts of America are overcrowded, but America as a whole isn’t. It has a distribution issue.

[01:01:26] Seek, and You Will Find
    • Bart is a seeker. He follows the verse, "seek, and you will find."
    • At the age of 58, Bart learned to fly. He’s continuously amazed by those much older than him who still fly in the skies,
    • You might find yourself unhappy when you stop doing anything new and seek something different.

[01:12:15] “I think the people that are most unhappy, are the people who don't do anything new.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    • Even just one piece of feedback can give you an insight into how you affect others.
    • Joel grew up in Philadelphia and witnessed a lot of violence.
    • He focused on basketball as a way to escape the bad environment where he grew up.

    • Discrimination exists because of ignorance.
    • People don't often discuss the effects of growing up in a neighborhood like Joel's.
    • Desperation, lack of resources, and education keep people trapped within a harmful cycle.
    • Joel was able to experience both inner-city and suburban education. There he witnessed the vast difference in opportunities and resources between the two.
    • His personal experience pushed him to share his story and make an impact on others. Joel wants to spread understanding to encourage people to become their best selves.

    • One advantage of growing up in Philadelphia is that Joel developed common sense at a young age, which protected him from being taken advantage of.
    • The difficulties he faced toughened Joel and put things in perspective. He always looked for the good because he knew things could be worse.
    • A con is seeing the difference between the violence and drugs around him and the picture-perfect lives represented on TV. This split pits people against each other.
    • This chip on his shoulder motivated him to escape and experience a better life. However, he also realized how these two sides exist to keep people in place.
    • It drove him to encourage people to turn their cons into pros.

    • His parents gave him a vision of the other side. With their teachings, he could focus on what he needed to do to reach his best.
    • Joel and his family used to have conversations and studies about these learnings. He continues this practice with his son.

    • The movie, Teen Wolf (1985), follows a wolf who excelled in basketball. This movie inspired Joel at an early age to play the sport and improve like the wolf.
    • There weren't many ways to escape their circumstances aside from entering the entertainment or athletics fields; business wasn't often taught.
    • Joel realized at 10 years old that he could be good at basketball. Back then, he won his first-ever MVP playing in the West Philadelphia basketball league.
    • Basketball was something he was actively involved in with his family. It became his way out. Joel got a scholarship and went to college by excelling in the sport.
    • He envisioned himself as the best player in his area and continued to work to be the best wherever he went.

[36:34] The Pros and Cons of Professional Basketball
    • Joel learned a lot from being a professional basketball player, and gained the mentality and discipline to maintain a schedule similar to his days as an athlete.
    • Another good thing he enjoys from his time as a professional athlete is the mentality to go beyond. Rather than limit himself to fit in, Joel overachieves on purpose.
    • One of the biggest cons of being a well-known basketball player is building your identity around the profession.
    • When Joel stopped playing competitively and started going into business, he experienced an identity crisis.
    • Athletes often have to put their sport before everything. Because of this, Joel grew up putting education second to his performance as a player.

    [48:12] Writing Filtering
    • Joel began writing short essays in 2014 while struggling with his identity crisis. He later compiled these pieces and titled his book in the making, Filtering.
    • It wasn’t until 2019 that he seriously started working on Filtering. Joel incorporated these writing sessions into his daily schedule.
    • Joel initially started writing for himself. His reflections helped him process what he went through and gain a new appreciation for life.
    • Joel later started writing for others. In his final editing, he shifted his focus from himself to helping others.
    • His son played a significant role in motivating him to keep writing and reading. He took on reading challenges while he taught his son to read.

[56:53] What it means to Filter
    • The book encourages readers to form their own perspectives. As they read, they start to understand more and more.
    • Leave behind the negatives and take the good you can.
    • Joel found that the good can be found even in his worst experiences and be used to grow and improve.
    • The filtering process helps you break down, assess, brainstorm, and learn from your experiences.

[58:44] “That's what the filtering process does. It helps you to break everything down, to really assess it, brainstorm about it, and say, ‘That's what I was supposed to get from this situation.” - Click Here To Tweet This[01:00:02] Joel’s Impact
    • Joel wants his readers to open their hearts and minds to other people’s perspectives.
    • Practicing seeing things from another person’s shoes can help avoid different forms of discrimination.
    • Joel enjoys receiving feedback and criticism. If you’ve read his book and want to share how it has impacted you, get in touch with Joel on Facebook, Instagram, or his website!

    [01:03:02] Curiosity From Seeking
    • Joel is a curious person. His curiosity pushes him to do greater things.
    • He encourages his son to be curious and learn more about the world.
    • Seeking puts you in a place of curiosity where you can grow and understand.

[01:05:06] “That's a really important thing to not just be so closed-minded where you only see things from your own lens.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

Find out more about Marva on her website. You can connect with her on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram.

    Episode Highlights[00:31] Who is Marva?
    • In an exciting new introduction, you’ll find that Marva used to be in a band.
    • Now, she works as a technical executive playing a huge role in the supply chain.
    • Marva enjoys introducing herself in a way that shows a connection with others.
    • She is an author and is passionate about breast cancer as a breast cancer survivor.
    • Marva lives in Georgia and South Carolina.

    [03:43] Doing Something Unexpected
    • Be Unexpected by Marva Bailer is a book for anyone who wants to communicate and connect with others.
    • Online calls for work and communication can feel like an unintentional invitation into your home. It gives a glimpse of people’s lives and makes them more real and vulnerable.
    • Do something unexpected and out of routine. This can help get things done and provide a way for you to get to know people.

[11:45] “You have to do something that's not routine because everyone is expecting certain people to say certain things at certain times in meetings.” - Click Here To Tweet This[13:36] Growing Up with Marva
    • Marva is different from the usual people in technology and engineering. She’s known as an innovative, “out there” person who asks the hard questions in tech.
    • She has always been in a professional career in technology and software. Her first step into her work was a job selling typewriter maintenance.
    • Marva worked at Amazon, where she found an imbalance of people in the workforce.
    • Technology is a male-dominated field. Marva got hired with the help of her smart and friendly sorority girl personality.
    • She found that the best tech salespeople are women athletes.

    [17:16] Redefining Success and Work
    • In Marva’s first big tech job, she was able to rise to a managerial position. However, they got bought by IBM and employees started leaving the company.
    • Marva met a woman she saw in a magazine. During their conversation, they talked about faith and working with the community.
    • She was given a chance to work on the nonprofit board and work closely with the community rather than focus on money.
    • From then on, Marva looked at the values, community, and employees of a company.
    • She found that these are more important areas to look at rather than money and prestige.

    [19:57] Uplifting and Empowering Others
    • Everyone has the power to give other people power. By doing this, you can also amplify your power.
    • In a talk she gave for women, Marva addressed how people’s ideas were often not listened to.
    • She identified two factors in this. First is that having preambles can get in the way of getting your idea across and having others listen.
    • Second, it’s not just about what you say. Your body language can impact your communication.
    • Fortunately, these issues are getting better by spreading awareness and teaching both women and men what they can do.

[22:41] Learning Business Skills[31:12] “The power that we all hold is to give other people power. And when you give other people power, then you're actually amplifying your power.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Marva’s experience in Avon taught her different business skills including accounting and finance.
    • Back then, entrepreneurship relied primarily on physical rather than online means.
    • Many companies offer sales training for their employees. There, they can teach basic skills and show how people can connect with customers.

[35:03] “My advice is you really need to learn the science. And a lot of it is physical science. It's not just what you say- it's how you say it and your physical presence.” - Click Here To Tweet This[41:49] Bringing Down Communication Barriers
    • Smiling can bring warmth and overcome barriers in communication. You can smile not only with your teeth but with your eyes and even touch as well.
    • Value every person you meet and connect with. Regardless of their title, show them the same courtesy.
    • Know and call people by their names. Using names can deepen your connection and show that you see them as a person.
    • Practice asking for other people’s names and sharing yours.

[46:11] Marva’s Experiences Writing Be Unexpected
    • In the pandemic, everything stopped. People were trying to figure out what to do and Marva was left not having to do anything.
    • She took this opportunity to check off her adventurer’s list and write a book. All she had to do was learn how.
    • Through watching videos and getting connected with an author she knew, Marva was able to write Be Unexpected.
    • Growing up in a library, she knew this was a legacy she wanted to leave behind.
    • For anyone who wants to learn more about how to write a book, you can connect with Marga on her website, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.

    [50:50] About Be Unexpected
    • Marva came up with the title with her daughter and her daughter’s friends. Her audience was the next generation of leaders who have yet to discover more about leadership.
    • At work and meetings, people often waste time and energy introducing themselves. Coworkers become complacent and simply getting to know people becomes routine.
    • The book is meant for anyone who wants to break out of this cycle. It encourages more fun, energetic, and unexpected times at work.
    • Get to know people better rather than simply talking about yourself.
    • With this, you can build a long relationship with trust and connection.

[54:01] “[People] forget. They get comfortable. They get complacent. And they move on. So it just becomes routine and being polite.” - Click Here To Tweet This[58:15] Be Unexpected for Different People
    • As leaders, it's your responsibility to find and connect with the people who have the quietest voices.
    • Introverts can also lead. They just need time to decompress on their own.
    • The more we learn about different perspectives and people’s motivations, the more we can improve as well.

[01:00:15] Marva’s Journey with Breast Cancer
    • Marva’s parents and stepfather all passed away at 61 years old from cancer. Close to her 50th birthday, she received bad results from her mammogram.
    • Marva got diagnosed with breast cancer which she didn’t tell anyone at work about. From her previous experience, she thought that it would impact her place at work.
    • During her treatment with radiation, she finally told her team. Amazingly, she developed a somewhat clairvoyant sense that helped her team improve.
    • She had to undergo physical therapy after surgery to lift her arms. Additionally, her medication triggered her menopause despite her being only 52 years old.
    • October is breast cancer awareness month. Marva shares that everyone’s journey is different. Be careful what you say as others might be going through a difficult time.

    [01:08:03] The Time to Go
    • Choosing between seek, go or create, Marva picks go.
    • The time to live and take action is now, so go for it.

[01:08:21] “I would say go. The time is now. We need to live immediately. The time is now so I'd say go let's go for it.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    • Morag is the herder of cats, the truth speaker and truth seeker, and the poker of bears.

    • Morag’s book, Cultivate, is about being present and aligning with what makes your leadership different.
    • Be present and thoughtful about your leadership.
    • Be intentional and choose how you show up.

[08:07] “The mistake I know I've made in the past and the leaders that I'm working with right now is that they are not fully present. They rush from one hamster wheel to the next.” - Click Here To Tweet This[09:54] A Lesson on Leadership and Trust
    • Morag is a Gaelic name that means great.
    • Skye Team comes from her maiden name, MacLeod, a clan based on the Isle of Skye.

    • Leading in ballroom dancing entails trust and a partnership of equals.

[17:06] Trust: The Foundation of Relationships
    • Trust is the foundation of every personal and professional relationship.
    • The four questions to ask in your relationships are: Can I count on you? Can I depend on you? Do I care about you? Do I trust you?
    • Be conscious and intentional with these four questions.
    • Without trust, people will hold back and avoid taking risks for you.
    • Distributed work environments make it harder to build meaningful relationships.
