  • Reaching Forgiveness with Dr. Ronald Ramsey

Is unforgiveness getting in the way for you to heal? Is it preoccupying you or dragging you down?

We all walk around with an idea of how we think people should treat us. We tend to seek thoughts about how we have been treated unfairly. That's regardless of whether it involves a big or small offense. We succumb to unforgiveness without realizing its harm to us. This harm is adequately absorbed by the body, which can manifest downward linear growth and diseases that require medical care.

Dr. Ronald Ramsey, author, marriage counselor, and clinical chaplain, joins us in this episode. Dr. Ramsey’s interactions with couples, families, and patients showed him the damage to health of lack of forgiveness. He blends scripture, behavioral science, and insights to show the complexities of forgiveness.

Listen to this episode if you want to understand forgiveness and experience the long-lasting change it brings!

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Understand the big picture of forgiveness, peace and faith.
    2. Discover the symptoms of unforgiveness and learn how you can cure them.
    3. Know how to reach spiritual maturity towards forgiveness.

Episode Highlights[02:07] About Dr. Ronald D. Ramsey
    • Dr. Ramsey is a marriage counselor and clinical chaplain. He's also a retired organizational development consultant.
    • His mission is to help people connect their faith to their life challenges. He achieves this through chaplaincy, marriage counseling, and writing.
    • He authored a book. It’s Forty Days to Forgiveness: A Christian's Field Guide to the Forgiveness Journey.

[06:42] Dr. Ramsey’s Work as Clinical Chaplain
    • Clinical chaplains visit people in the hospital with palliative care and such illnesses. Those are sick people with incurable diseases. They receive treatment for the best quality of life possible in their last days.
    • Dr. Ramsey got his training from Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. He has been working as a chaplain for four years.
    • He started by volunteering to visit patients in the hospital across other nations from his counseling office.

    [11:26] Dr. Ronald D. Ramsey’s Mission
    • As a marriage counselor and chaplain, Dr. Ramsey helps people connect their marriage and health struggles to be healed with faith.
    • He also helps his clients learn new ways to interact and be with each other. It’s a skill he learned from his work in organization development.
    • The presence of unforgiveness is part of people’s struggles.
    • In his book, Dr. Ramsey aims to help people gradually go through a process. It's about going from unforgiveness to forgiveness.

[13:19] “I've seen unforgiveness as a significant portion of the struggles that people deal with, even in the work environment...” - Click Here To Tweet This[13:58] Dr. Ramsey’s Faith Journey
    • Dr. Ramsey’s mother raised him in faith. His mother made sure that he grew deeply involved in church and even worked as a youth minister in his first job.
    • After 25 years of corporate work, he decided to look for his purpose in life.
    • His wife inspired him to study counseling. That is where he learned that he suffers terribly from repressed fear, bitterness, and anger toward being sexually abused as a child.
    • Dr. Ramsey was also able to bring his faith to his dissertation topic. He chose to tackle forgiveness as he believed it would have the greatest impact on the body of Christ.

    [20:51] Dealing with Church-Hurt People
    • Dr. Ramsey tries to come into people’s worlds. He wants to see things from their perspective and get in touch with their pain.
    • He tries to be judgmental about their faith. That is unless they indicate their faith is bothering them.
    • In these cases, he reminds people that their relationship with God matters most.
    • He encourages them to pray for the people who had sins and “fallen away.” He also reminds them that it is what God would like them to do.
    • Forgiveness is like food intake; and unforgiveness is like wasting diseases that evil spirits thrive on.

[25:08] “Unforgiveness is something that everybody experiences — whether they want to admit to it or not.” - Click Here To Tweet This[25:42] Forgiveness and the Path of Least Resistance
    • People tend to do whatever they feel is going to help them. That includes taking the easy way out or the path of least resistance.
    • Forgiveness is one of the things people try to push aside.
    • Some people push forgiveness aside for a long time, whether that's one day, twelve years, or thirty eight years.

[29:10] The Big Picture of Forgiveness
    • The Bible is the story of forgiveness, especially the New Testament. Jesus Christ is the example of forgiveness that we all try to emulate in our life.
    • Forgiveness is serious and deemed the offender’s responsibility in the biblical times in Old Testament.
    • When Jesus Christ came to the Earth, forgiveness took on a different meaning. We are all already forgiven under His blood and the debt the Lord paid for us.
    • Jesus preached forgiveness as a two-way street. You are responsible for creating forgiveness, whether you’re the offender or the offended.
    • Sometimes, some people wait for a grave sickness or disease before forgiving.
    • Many people believe that unforgiveness, when left rotting, manifests physically; that may be through heat stroke, fungus infection, varicose veins, or as terrible as pandemic diseases.

[35:18] “Christ changed [forgiveness] when he came. We're all already forgiven under His blood, under the debt He paid for us.” - Click Here To Tweet This[36:52] Self Forgiveness, Divine Forgiveness, and Interpersonal Forgiveness
    • Divine forgiveness is feeling unjustly treated by God. As a result, they hold a grudge against Him, bury their belief, and turn their back on the church.
    • Self-forgiveness is not permitting ourselves to let go of our regrets for things we have sin.
    • Interpersonal forgiveness is when you commit an offense and treat another person unjustly or unfairly.
    • Dr. Ramsey shares that Forty Days to Forgiveness is all about interpersonal forgiveness.

    [38:03] Unforgiveness and Self-Centeredness
    • Regardless of our strength and what kind of Christian we are, we think about we should be treated.
    • We imagine a sense of fair treatment and form unenforceable rules in our minds.
    • We can enforce how other people treat us. We make people treat us the way we want to be treated.
    • That is self-centeredness leading to unforgiveness.

[40:55] How Spiritually Mature People Handle Forgiveness
    • Spiritual maturity is at the core of our presence as Christians to truly forgive others for injustice toward us.
    • It is achievable through the presence of our four spiritual disciples. Those are prayer, meditation, scripture study, and fellowship.

    [41:52] Symptoms of Unforgiveness
    • Unforgiveness creates all kinds of physical symptoms, even death. It affects every aspect of our well-being — physical, emotional, financial, and career.
    • You experience ruminating thoughts and create a narrative of how you were treated.
    • You talk to people about how you were hurt and try to enlist their support.
    • You start harboring negative thoughts about how to respond to people who have unfairly treated you.
    • In certain instances, this can lead to poor judgment. We can learn more about it by looking back; what are the 39 diseases in the bible?

[46:53] “Forgiveness does take time, and the research shows that it's not something that we can snap our fingers and do despite thinking that we can. It usually takes more time.” - Click Here To Tweet This[49:50] Forty Days to Forgiveness: A Christian's Field Guide to the Forgiveness Journey
    • Dr. Ramsey says it is “a boot camp for living the Christian faith and walking the talk.”
    • Book is tight-targeted toward Christians struggling to forgive. Jesus healed everyone; in the same vein, we can forgive everyone.
    • It features six chapters dealing with healing for the different aspects of forgiveness. It is characterized by the word, Action:

    Acknowledging the depth of unfairness

    Commitment to forgiving another person

Transitioning from negative to positive intentions

    Internalizing your Christ-like spirit

Openness to changes forgiveness brings in your life

    Nurturing those changes over time.

    • It has 40 sections. The reader takes 30 to 45 minutes to read and go through the exercise.

    About Veta

Veta Richardson is the president and CEO of Associate of Corporate Counsel, a not-for-profit corporation dedicated exclusively to serving chief legal and compliance executives. She authored Take Six, a book on habits to own your destiny, overcome challenges, and unlock opportunities based on Veta’s life experiences.

If you'd like to reach out to Veta, you can contact her on her website or connect on LinkedIn.

    Episode Highlights[04:26] Veta’s Mission
    • Veta's mission is to positively impact people — to see them step out of their comfort zones and think of their problems differently.
    • She is a firm believer in ‘paying it forward.’
    • Veta wrote 'Take Six' as a passion project to reach, mentor, and help more people.
    • However, she shares that the world has become so complex and divisive that making an impact feels like one individual at a time.
    • Veta encourages people to have conversations and strive for impact amid the potentially exhausting environment. She believes that impact will nourish our souls.

    [11:56] Veta’s Biggest Life Influences
    • Veta's most significant influence is her parents. She grew up focusing on what's possible —  the things she can control.
    • Veta had a strong sense of personal accountability and pushed herself to get good grades.
    • Veta's parents also taught her to become known for good things.

[12:39] "The only thing that we can control is ourselves and our own reaction to all the things that might go around us." - Click Here To Tweet This[15:41] How Being ‘Different’ Affected Veta
    • Veta and her sister stood out for being the only non-white students at their school.
    • Being 'different' gave Veta a sense of fluidity. She can easily be comfortable in environments where she might be unique.
    • It also made her more empathetic for underrepresented people — individuals whose background, upbringing, race, religion, or sexual orientation were different from hers.
    • Despite being different, Veta never assumed the victim role.

    [19:28] Veta’s Professional Development
    • Veta’s biggest takeaway from her professional development is self-ownership. She takes responsibility for her goals.
    • She is a business and management graduate but wanted to work in corporate law.
    • She sent out hundreds of application letters to corporate lawyers but all she got were rejections.
    • Eventually, Veta learned about Sunoco, but there were no positions available. She proposed a volunteer internship because she just wanted the experience.
    • She worked for Sunoco for ten years before moving to a non-profit organization, American Corporate Counsel Association.

    [25:31] The Difference in Profit & Non-Profit
    • Profit organizations are people- and resource-heavy.
    • Conversely, non-profit organizations do not have a lot of resources, forcing people to learn to navigate and figure things out themselves.
    • Veta shares that there is more opportunity to impact non-profit organizations because there are assigned lanes for the employees.
    • Bigger organizations can afford more time and encounter analysis paralysis, whereas smaller organizations need to be nimble because of the limited resources.

    • Veta describes success as making an immediate and lasting impact on people.
    • She took inspiration from help she received from people throughout her life. Veta believes that we are all beneficiaries of the people who invested in us.
    • She also emphasizes the importance of knowing when to ask for help because it becomes increasingly difficult to request for assistance as we advance in our careers.

[37:53] "Look one another in the eye, have a conversation, and [don’t] look over your shoulder to try to see if there’s somebody better who’s coming along.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • The more you help people, the more you can navigate your problems. You benefit from the advice you give other people.
    • Veta also shares the importance of a genuine interest in the people you converse with. Look at them and not through them.
    • She owned her success and took responsibility for her success. Remember that you do not deserve your job; you earned it.

[43:46] “We deserve to be treated with respect. You know, that’s number one.” - Click Here To Tweet This[44:42] Take Six
    • Veta writes six essential habits: take stock, take the risk, take credit, take a hand, take a stand, and take command.
    • Taking stock is spending time planning your life. Identify your goals, find the gap, and set plans. You define what success looks like and feels like for you with where you are now.
    • Taking the risk is recognizing that you cannot stay paralyzed. Take the risks, be willing to change the status quo, and step outside your comfort zone.
    • Taking credit is all about learning and assessing your strengths and contributions.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn about the remaining three habits!.

[49:08] How to Start Your Journey to Success
    • The first step is to identify your gaps. Then, develop a plan to close these gaps.
    • Assess and capitalize on your education/training, current awareness/exposure, experiences, external networks, and unique skills/abilities.
    • The journey to success is a journey to self-actualization, setting goals, and defining success for yourself.

[57:35] Major Takeaways from Take Six
    • It is a book for people at all stages of life.
    • Habits are good, especially for people who are just starting.
    • Be a net giver.

Episode Highlights[03:37] The Five C’s to Living a Joyful Life
    • Tim feels like he’s been in a weird mood in the past few months.
    • He noticed he was straying from rhythms that nourish his soul and make him happy.
    • Thus, Tim decided to take notes and figure out what he needed to do consistently to find joy and be happy with life.
    • He came up with five C's that help him stay focused.

    [05:31] Content
    • Being content means being at peace with what’s going on around you.
    • Some people live in the past, always wanting to relive the glory days, while others think about the future. Both can lead to anxiety.
    • Tim wants to be in a place where he’s content right here, right now.
    • Be mindful and gain wisdom, but be content.

    • Try unsubscribing from some emails and cleaning out things burdening you and putting you in a bad mood.
    • Narrow your information sources and consume information intentionally.
    • Limit the time you spend on social media.

    • We were designed to create — part of being happy with life involves acts of creation.
    • Creating comes in many forms. Even manual labor — such as digging a ditch or repairing things — counts as creating something.
    • Understand what you want to create and be consistent in creating it.
    • Avoid getting into maintenance mode.

[13:59] “I believe that we were created. And I believe that we were created to be creators.” - Click Here To Tweet This[16:57] Connect
    • We all need to interact and connect with other people.
    • We’re supposed to ask for help and give help because that’s what God wants us to do as a community and as His family.
    • Be part of a community, either digital or in person.

    • Why are we here?
    • We all desire to understand more about our purpose.
    • When you try to be content, collect information, create, and connect with others, you gain clarity on what you're doing daily.
    • Gaining clarity will help you recognize what you need and want.

    • Entrepreneurship can start change, from startups to nonprofits and ministries.
    • We can also consider political campaigns as startups because they create movements.

    • You can create more impact than when you started by scaling up.

    • Find people whose expertise and skills work well with your business idea, your values, and the skills you don’t have.
    • Basic markers to look for are honesty and integrity.

[33:48] “Good quality entrepreneurs have the ability to see vision that other people can’t see.” - Click Here To Tweet This[36:53] Patrick’s Involvement in His Companies
    • Patrick sees his startups as movie scripts. He is the executive producer.
    • He makes sure operations run smoothly and tries to solve problems before they arise.
    • If the company is doing exceptionally bad, Patrick steps in. If the company is doing exceptionally well, he helps it achieve its best revenue.

    [41:20] Patrick’s Business Ideals
    • Patrick thinks of his companies the same way he does stock market companies.
    • An exit strategy and allowing others to accelerate your startup with a business plan are great for the business.
    • Holding on to a growing company and helping the employees to make more revenue is also a strategic move.
    • However, prioritizing shareholder value over product or service innovation can go very wrong for any company.

    [46:14] Scalability and Sustainability
    • Every company needs innovation, scalability, and the ability to execute in order to grow.
    • If your business is scalable, you can repeat the business process anywhere.
    • Innovation drives us toward patents and IPs. These keep other people from doing what you’re doing.
    • Patrick is always eager to talk about how to scale and innovate someone’s company and help them see the way forward.

    [54:44] Final Message from Patrick
    • Entrepreneurship is a contact sport. You have to learn from every client and figure out what product or service best fits their needs.
    • Determine your skills and market them.
    • Start and find success in your business, then move up to the next level.

[06:26] “I think it's pretty cool to see other people excel, especially those that do something from nothing.” - Click Here To Tweet This[06:54] Defining Success
    • Success is different for everyone. It’s important to think about what it means to you.

    • Shawn has a loving family. They focused on hard work to achieve success.
    • He considers his dad his best coach, mentor, and hero.
    • Mowing lawns became a good business lesson and source of income for Shawn.

    [11:46] Shawn’s Turning Point
    • As a kid, Shawn didn’t enjoy speaking, reading, and writing. Later on, a part-time CFO he hired encouraged him to read and learn from business books.
    • Shawn thinks he would have been a better leader if he had read more when he was younger.
    • Before he started reading, Shawn’s business wasn’t doing too well — he had no vision.
    • Shawn realized he had to focus on helping and teaching the people he works with. Giving them opportunities became his passion.
    • This realization and the change that came with it put Shawn on the path to success.

[14:22] “I think I could have been a better leader from 28 to 40 if I would have made a conscious decision to read and study some good books on different leadership tactics.” - Click Here To Tweet This[21:14] The Growth of PFSbrands
    • PFSbrands, Shawn’s company, started in 1998. He used to sell products from their garage.
    • His vision was to support people in the food service industry and offer quality products.
    • They originally use a licensing model. As the company grew, Shawn realized the need to build a stronger brand and have more control. They eventually shifted to franchising.
    • The difference between franchising and licensing is the level of commitment, control, and restrictions for the operators.

    [29:07] The Ideal Franchisees
    • They interview franchise applicants to ensure that the store, person, and site are qualified to become an operator.
    • Franchisees and employees can impact your brand both positively and negatively.
    • They aim to work with people whose goals align with PSFbrands.

    [31:36] Shawn’s Light Bulb Moments
    • In the past, Shawn didn’t put enough resources into the infrastructure of his company.
    • One of his biggest realizations was the low financial literacy among the population. He focused on sharing more about the business.
    • They now implement open-book leadership. Everybody is included in the goals, plans, and processes.
    • In Shawn’s company, they encourage setting objectives that people. This led them to succeed more at work and in their personal lives.
    • Understanding and managing your finances is important. This helps business owners predict their future cash flow needs.

[33:04] “It's not a minority percentage of the population. It’s a majority percentage of the population that has no clue what's going on in business.” - Click Here To Tweet This[37:10] Open-Book Leadership
    • The average person’s perception of business shows how much they’re unaware of how business works. There is a misconception that owners take home a lot of cash.
    • You can correct this misconception with open-book leadership.
    • Share the actual numbers in your company and give them an opportunity to affect these numbers with profit distribution.
    • It’s more than sharing numbers — it’s also about teaching your employees financial literacy.

[41:00] “Open-book leadership is not just showing. Open-book leadership is teaching, educating, and then getting everybody rowing in the same direction.” - Click Here To Tweet This[42:27] Challenges of Success in Entrepreneurship
    • Shawn has tough skin against insults. He feels sorry for those who are jealous of other people’s success.
    • More people should seize the opportunity to dream and work hard to achieve it.

    [46:00] Employee Stock Ownership Plan
    • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) means the company is completely owned by the employees.
    • There are tax advantages that allow them to grow without paying taxes. Employees who cash in their shares pay their taxes.
    • Private equity can lead to the loss of a team-oriented and open book leadership system.
    • Education and open-book leadership encourage a positive culture in the company.

    [51:54] Shawn’s Experience in Writing
    • Many people have encouraged him to write a book. Despite thinking he had little to tell, he was convinced to write one.
    • Writing a book became a goal for him. Despite his past hate for reading and writing, Shawn’s book has become a best seller.
    • Shawn wrote it to share a story and encourage other people.
    • While writing, he realized how similar he was to his dad.
    • Shawn wants his readers to set goals and accomplish them. Define what success is for you, find your purpose, and work toward it every day.

    [59:16] Shawn’s Passion to Create
    • No matter what type of business you have, you can create a good work culture.
    • Shawn loves to create. He’s passionate about creating jobs, companies, and opportunities.

[01:00:09] “...it becomes all about what type of culture you want to build. And that becomes a cliche word today, too. But if you treat your people correctly, if you show them what they're working for, that culture can be created.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    About Michael

Michael Andreacchi is the CEO and co-founder of Junk King, the number 1 rated junk removal service in North America. He is also a husband and the father of two beautiful children. Michael and his team started by running their business out of a garage, but have since grown to over 160 franchised branches.

If you'd like to know more about Michael and Junk King, you may call them at 1-888-888-5865. You may also contact them on their website.

Episode Highlights[02:55] A Leader at Heart
    • Michael has been in the junk business for over 17 years. Their service is centered on junk removal, recycling, and repurposing.
    • He’s always been a leader, whether at school, in sports or at work.
    • According to Michael, refusing to lose is a vital leadership characteristic.
    • Leadership is a multilevel trait, from CEO to employees.

[10:57] ”It's very hard to pinpoint when you're looking for franchisees that you think will be good leaders. We would like franchisees to open territories from where they're from, because of the networking and the relationships that you've already built throughout the community to go into a market.” - Click Here To Tweet This[14:42] Harnessing an Entrepreneurial Mindset
    • He’s had an entrepreneurial mindset even at a young age. Michael took part-time jobs because he wanted money to afford the lifestyle he wanted.
    • He pursued work in the junk business after a little push from his wife.
    • Michael wanted to join the company’s franchise system but could not afford it then, so he started his own business.
    • They’ve grown to have franchisees throughout the nation.
    • Michael is grateful for his wife; she pushed him to be more and continue job-hunting when all he wanted was to minimize his life.

[19:58] “I think many times we have to go back and show the appreciation for someone that pushed us a little more to do something that was a little uncomfortable” - Click Here To Tweet This[22:33] Addressing Ownership and Consumerism
    • Consumerism is rampant in America — people own massive amounts of belongings.
    • Hoarding is a product of pursuing only the newest and best items in the market.
    • People pay for storage facilities to keep items with sentimental value and for future-oriented utility. However, these items often end up going unused.

[27:00] The Value of Junk Removal Services
    • Michael started his business thinking of the revenue he could earn. Back then he was not knowledgeable about the costs of running a business.
    • He saw the potential in the value junk removal services could offer to various customers. There was also little competition.
    • When a customer calls, you want to recognize what they need from you. Michael mentions clients often need Junk King's services because of changes in their lives.
    • Customers have two concerns: cost-effective services and where they will dispose of the items.

[31:13] “When a customer calls us, you want to recognize right away from a customer service perspective why they're calling you. They're all calling you to get rid of their junk, of course, but is time a challenge for them? They're getting evicted, they're moving, they're doing a remodel, they're trying to sell a house. Some of those things are very time sensitive.” - Click Here To Tweet This[33:37] Sorting Through the Junk
    • Their company uses a lot of transfer stations that serve as deposit sites for all the junk collected from clients.
    • Before taking the collective hauls to the landfill, the transfer stations will sort and identify recyclable items.
    • They take pride in sorting through everything by hand. They take reusable items to non-profit organizations and donation centers.
    • They do their part to help with the environment.

[37:20] “I think most or a lot of people feel like their stuff is worth something because it's sentimental to them.” - Click Here To Tweet This[40:54] A Flexible Profit Model
    • The business’s profit is close to breakeven.
    • Recycling and reselling items give additional earnings for the company, but it is not a profit stream.
    • Michael did not want to raise their prices believing that doing so will permanently increase their service fees. They only add surcharges as necessary.

    [43:09] From Initiative to Growth
    • The company began with a purchased truck and a garage before moving onto a warehouse.
    • Their initial transactions relied mostly on connections and networking. They now have a website for all their transactions.
    • Expansion, deploying franchises, acquiring legal services and upscaling their networks are the biggest hurdles early in the business.
    • Michael’s company is recession resistant, with the pandemic hinting at the importance of their services.
    • Their growth curve projection began with more inventories, more franchises, and improved marketing.

[52:51] Hows and Whys of Expansion
    • Michael spends most of his time overseeing the growth of his company through franchises. They use a software for franchises.
    • He orients people to their software.
    • He is comfortable with the corporate environment but occasionally gets on a truck as well.
    • Surround yourself with the right people. Calculate risks before following your dreams.
    • In choosing the right business partners, Michael suggests finding people who wants to do business with you and wants to help your business grow.

[57:10] “I think franchising is beautiful because there’s a built-in business partner.” - Click Here To Tweet This[01:00:30] Choosing the Right Employees
    • Michael proudly maintains the work engagement of their corporate staff with truck drivers. They do not need to micromanage their employees.
    • Job flexibility and time consideration greatly impact the labor space.

    [01:04:28] It’s a ‘Not Sexy’ Industry
    • Michael recalls hearing from franchisees that they find it hard to grasp their junk business.
    • Service companies may not be as attractive as other businesses, but they have significant potential for success.

    • Elliot helps his clients buy small and medium businesses.
    • He studied to be an engineer before attending Harvard's business school.
    • After gaining experience, he started his private equity firm, where he found a problem in the market.
    • Ellio started Guardian Due Diligence as a solution to his clients' needs in business acquisition.

[06:28] The Complicated Path to Business
    • Elliot grew up in Detroit. He completed a general science degree at Morehouse College before getting his engineering degree at Georgia Tech.
    • Georgia Tech would have helped for a career in engineering. However, Harvard Business School gave Elliot more opportunities in private equity.
    • Elliot’s father did Small Business Administration loans and financing. His mother worked in a bank and municipal bonds.
    • When his father died at 15, Elliot focused on getting a good education to make stable money.
    • He experienced both the ups and downs of business with his family. Growing up with entrepreneur parents allowed him to grow up experiencing business.

    [15:07] Finding His Path
    • If Elliot could chat with his dad, he'd ask for his opinion on how he did in his life.
    • He had to find his path without guidance and validation from his father.
    • Going alone allowed him to go through life without worrying about the world's opinions. Instead, he receives validation from his faith, family, and friends.
    • You can succeed regardless of your parents’ involvement.

[18:02] “I guess the thing I would put out here is even if you don't have entrepreneurial parents, or your dad's not around, you're smart enough to get this stuff done.” - Click Here To Tweet This[18:55] Elliot’s Definition of Success and Money[19:10] “To me, success is achieving the goals you set for yourself without undermining your own integrity.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • For Elliot, success means achieving your goals without losing your integrity.
    • He measures success by maximizing his income per unit of freedom restricted. This method allows him to balance his personal priorities against his professional ones.
    • Money gives people more freedom to choose. Someone with less money would be less able to prioritize their personal life over their work life.
    • For Elliot, having more than enough gives him the freedom to focus on his priorities.
    • Many of his clients feel the same. They want to have more freedom to be sustainable.

[22:50] “I think money up to a certain level of sustainability, like being able to cover your bills, is really about covering your responsibilities. And I think money above that starts creating freedom for you and others and choice freedom to deliver and manifest your priorities on this planet.” - Click Here To Tweet This[24:50] The Struggles of the Underprivileged
    • People of color have experienced too many injustices and difficulties in the name of fair treatment.
    • Some demographics have it easier, while others, including black people, have struggled to reach the same level of treatment or success.
    • Be aware of the advantages others may have and the difficulties of other groups.
    • When Elliot went to Harvard, he couldn’t even compete with the children of influential people. He could only hope for an opportunity.

[28:06] “I think it's just paramount that we recognize or have some consciousness of what other groups may have been through.” - Click Here To Tweet This[31:04] Elliot’s Harvard Experience
    • Elliot splits the people who went to Harvard into three types. First are the wealthy who can come out on top no matter what due to their family.
    • There are also the people who may have come from nothing but had great experiences supporting them.
    • Lastly are the folks who were able to somehow scrape their way in.
    • Elliot didn’t let himself be distracted by the variety of people and their stories. Instead, he focused on doing his best there.

[35:10] Working With Small and Medium Businesses
    • Elliot makes an impact on small and medium-sized businesses.
    • He’s able to help see deals through with due diligence.
    • For Elliot, his clients are the coolest entrepreneurs. They are the people who have the drive to better their business and themselves.

[35:41] “I am an enabler...through my company Guardian to take someone who just has the idea to do it, has the gumption to set enough time and resources aside to give themselves the ability to go through the process. I can take them from there to the finish line.” - Click Here To Tweet This[38:31] Running a Business to Success
    • Don’t overpay for what you’re getting. However, don’t be too cheap as this can lead to failure.
    • One of the best things you can do is use free or low-cost sources of information such as Twitter.
    • Understand the risks when you invest.
    • One big mistake people make is believing they can complete a long process in a short time. Be patient as you go through the process.
    • Another mistake is being overconfident. Be humble.

    [44:35] Elliot’s Stories
    • One of Elliot’s successful clients was planning to buy a country club and found a good deal. Realizing it’s out of their expertise, the buyer asks for his help with due diligence.
    • A problem with the deal came up and, through the Due Diligence process, his client determined the best course of action.
    • Another experience Elliot had with an impatient client led to the deal almost falling apart due to the buyer’s attitude.
    • Fortunately, they were able to pull the deal back together.

[49:20] What to Keep in Mind For Sellers and Buyers
    • One of the first things buyers should do is to find a reliable data source and learn more about it. Additionally, set aside your resources in preparation.
    • Talk to both successful and unsuccessful people who you can also reach online. They can give you the best data.
    • For sellers, be mindful of keeping your financial affairs in order. A consultation with a certified public accountant can help you smooth the process.
    • Don't be greedy. Deliver the honor that you want to receive during the process.
    • A person you hired for your finances can be easier to work with than the person your buyer paid to do the same.

    [56:10] The Field of Business
    • Elliot is wary about how artificial intelligence might wipe out many jobs from those who need it.
    • A great thing happening in the business field is how resources can be easily accessible on the internet.
    • Anyone willing to work hard can learn much and achieve a lot.
    • The most sustainable businesses are the ones that can manage with the fewest resources.
    • Similarly, the toughest people can push through despite smaller resources.

    [59:05] Elliot on Creating
    • Elliot’s taking on his newest adventure and enjoying Columbia.
    • Between the words "Seek," "Go," and "Create," Elliot chose "Create."
    • If you have something to share, start creating content and resources.

  • The Three Biggest Leadership Mistakes

A person’s character gets revealed in good and challenging times. More than having the talent or the skills, this moral compass is what often makes or breaks leadership. As such, you have to know which traits you must possess and which you have to work on—or completely eliminate.

Tim highlights the foundational principle of moral compass in leading your team to peace and success.

Episode Highlights[02:34] Knowing the Three Biggest Leadership Mistakes
    • These are the negative side of the characteristics that we should have.
    • Our minds sometimes learn better when we hear the opposite of what we should be doing.

[03:30] Moral Compass as a Foundational Principle
    • The foundational principle of leadership is moral compass and who we are as individuals.
    • Some people get elevated to positions of leadership because of their talent. But it doesn’t mean they have the moral compass needed for that role.
    • Leadership has nothing to do with someone’s ability or talent. Rewarding talent instead of recognizing character is what’s causing issues in leaders.
    • Character gets revealed in good times and extremely challenging situations.
    • Talent can only carry you so far when things get tough.

[04:51] “What we're seeing is the result of rewarding talent instead of recognizing character is what is causing many issues in the world and, specifically, the world of leaders today.” - Click Here To Tweet This[06:13] Ecclesiastes 10:10
    • Tim has been doing a chronological read of the Bible this year.
    • Ecclesiastes is an odd book in the Bible. The first 11 chapters of the book talk about what's the point of doing all the work when it will all disappear when you die.
    • Tune in to the full episode to learn the meaning of Ecclesiastes 10:10!
    • Someone with a low character has to work harder to be successful. But if they have wisdom, it’s going to be more helpful in defining what success is.
    • Leadership and life are harder for a low-character person. Thus, we desire to have the character traits of someone with strength and wisdom.

[09:04] “Leadership and life is harder and has more issues for the low character person or for the person with limited character.” - Click Here To Tweet This[09:40] What Makes a Good Leader
    • When people who are not good and kind get elevated into leadership roles, the fact that they're not good people gets magnified.
    • Part of Tim's mission is to get people thinking about what it means to be a kind person, so it spills over into leadership.
    • It’s tough for someone who’s a jerk to implement positive traits.
    • Leaders are grossly unprepared for the possible idolization that comes with leadership.
    • Character is extremely important. Pride and ego typically cannot handle the pedestal people get placed on.

[12:08] The Impossibleness of Living Up to the Leadership Role
    • The nature of social media results in hypercriticism of the leadership role, which is oftentimes unfair.
    • An average person who’s not trying to work on character issues cannot handle the pressure of great success.
    • Leaders don’t have as much control as we think they do. Many times, they’re just positioning things.
    • A primary thing a leader should do is to create an atmosphere so they and others can succeed.
    • Leaders must have basic foundations to handle complexities of leadership.

[14:13] Three Leadership Basic Character Traits and the Three Biggest Leadership Mistakes
    • The three basic character traits are love, faith, and peace. These are the three foundational items people should have to be successful in a leadership role.
    • The opposite of these basic character traits is the biggest leadership flaws or mistakes. These are apathy, being self-focused, and chaos.

[16:22] #1: Apathy[18:43] “When someone does a good job, catch them doing it and give them verbal praise or some type of praise right then and there because if you do not, that is not showing love, and it's being apathetic. You do not want to be someone showing apathy.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Apathy manifests when you are not thinking about your people or leaders on a regular basis. You ignore and let them handle challenges on their own.
    • Another big mistake under the category of apathy is not giving timely praise and correction.
    • Someone in a leadership role should exude love and kindness as often as possible. Nobody wants to work for a jerk.
    • Another aspect of apathy is focusing on the wrong things. For example, focusing on advancing your position vs. organization's objectives.
    • Love requires time. Apathy shows a lack of time commitment to important things.

[20:25] “Don't be a jerk. Nobody wants to work for a jerk, and no one should want to be a jerk.” - Click Here To Tweet This[22:54] #2: Self-Focus
    • Self-focus is when someone is consumed with themselves. Someone operating from faith understands there is something bigger in the world than just them.
    • Recognize that the world does not revolve around you. What softened Tim's self-focus are getting married, becoming a follower of Christ, and having children.
    • Two things that tie into self-focus are not thinking long-term and not looking at the big picture.
    • A leader is a steward over people, places, or things they had been given by God. This definition allows you to think of the bigger picture.
    • A tangible result of being self-focused is being really arrogant and feeling the need to prove yourself at the expense of others.

    [29:56] #3: Chaos
    • People who lead from a place of chaos create roadblocks instead of creating an environment that fosters success.
    • Someone quick to anger brings chaos. What happens is you attract people that are comfortable with that type of personality.
    • You can also bring chaos into the organization if you’re slow to correct. The longer you wait to address situations, the more chaos it’s going to create.
    • Another big thing is allowing abusive behavior. You cannot ignore abusive behavior; it becomes your responsibility to jump in once you witness it.
    • Positioning yourself and your team to succeed is how you bring peace and rest and eliminate chaos in the organization.

[39:08] “Position yourself, your organization, your group or your team, and individuals to succeed. That's how you bring peace and rest in the organization and eliminate chaos.” - Click Here To Tweet This

    About Jesse

Jesse Krieger is the Founder of the Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Press, an 8-year-old book publishing company. He is also the Co-founder and Chief Content Officer at PowerFan.io. Its mission is to empower authors, creators, and fans to conduct commerce in valuable new ways using NFTs in the blockchain space.

If you'd like to reach out to Jesse, you can contact him on his website or email him at [email protected]. You can also reach him on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

Episode Highlights[02:05] What’s Up With NFTs
    • In just a few years, NFTs have captured tens of billions of dollars annually. It surpassed the market value of the entire book publishing industry.
    • NFTs have a built-in royalty mechanism for the creator, enabling them to capture royalties on secondary sales.
    • NFTs allow the delivery of almost any type of content.

    [05:32] Explaining NFTs to Skeptics
    • People were also skeptical of the internet at first. But the internet revolutionized every industry, and every aspect of society now has a digital presence.
    • Web 3.0 or NFTs has a lot of implications, and it's just starting to play out.
    • Usually, only one out of ten projects do well. The exact ratio applies to any creative space, such as movies, books, and music.
    • With something new like NFTs, it's unrealistic to think that everything about it will do great.
    • In 1996, Jeff Bezos wanted to start his business in an industry that was in the midst of explosive growth. At the time, the internet was gaining a household adoption of 2300% yearly.

[09:16] “Even now in a [cryptocurrency] bear market as we're recording this, this is the time when people build and develop new projects, and then when the market turns, then you've got a new set of success stories. So, I like to say build on the bear and ride it in the bull.” - Click Here to Tweet This[11:44] How Jesse Got Into Book Publishing
    • Jesse wrote his book Lifestyle Entrepreneur and published it in Asia in 2012. Due to the book’s success, a US-based publisher released an updated version in the US and the rest of the world.
    • Jesse had author friends who asked him for help to publish their books. He took the opportunity and later founded the Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Press.
    • Since 2014, Lifestyle Entrepreneurs Press has been working with authors in the health, self-help, and spirituality genres. They work with a full-service publishing offering.
    • Jesse got onto over 50 podcasts using his book. It is a great talking point and anchor that gave way to further talk about his business and brand.
    • Jesse enjoys working with non-fiction authors with more than five years of experience in their practice. He gets the chance to understand their life and success and helps them bring out their stories through their book.

[22:07] Jesse’s Life Before Becoming An Author[27:12] “I used to think just writing and playing music was creative, but now I do believe that starting any kind of an entrepreneurial venture is a creative act.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Jesse fell in love with music and played while traveling as a teenager. He later got into music production and built his music label. His band released an album under a famous recording company.
    • After producing music, Jesse pivoted to becoming a consultant for the music industry and business development for tech companies. From consulting, he had a stint as an investment banker.
    • Later, Jesse co-founded a renewable energy credits business. Then, he founded a promotional drop ship company. He sold it 18 months after it grew to over half a million in revenue.
    • At the time, he realized he wanted to write down his experiences while they were still fresh in his mind. That became the catalyst for him to start writing.
    • He got his book Lifestyle Entrepreneur published, which was about his philosophy and approach to getting clear on your passion. It was also about finding a way to give it a business model.

[34:01] “And maybe you do have something to lose, but you always have experience to gain, knowledge and wisdom from having done it and I’ve pulled lessons forward from everything I've been involved in to what I'm doing now in some shape or form.” - Click Here to Tweet This[35:17] Going All-in With Creative Ventures
    • Money is a lagging indicator and shouldn’t be the goal in and of itself. Love of money can become the root of suffering if you chase money for money’s sake.
    • Jesse has always prioritized experiences, travel, and relationships, even if there's very little money on the table.
    • When you write a book, there’s a shift in your identity, and you become a semi-public figure. A behind-the-scenes operator is one type of entrepreneur, and a semi-public face is another.
    • Strike a balance and don’t just quit your current job and go all-in as an author. Do the work until you get opportunities that can replace or exceed your income.

[42:45] How Artists Can Utilize NFTs
    • NFTs are another form of publishing. It’s publishing an asset to the blockchain instead of the bookstore, and it lives in its own digital realm.
    • Royalties built into NFTs are groundbreaking because the money split occurs when a transaction occurs. There is no need to wait for an accounting period.
    • There are different kinds of NFTs. It makes it possible to buy an album or any creative work while collaborating with the creator.
    • Take all your value forms and turn them into business offerings. You can package them into a specific price point and transact using the blockchain.

    [48:26] Benefits of NFTs
    • NFT collections have an increasing floor price, the lowest you can sell any NFT.
    • If you get the floor price above the initial sale price, that's where people start making tons of money.
    • Create fewer products than the demand. You can earn from the secondary royalties as more people buy your products from those who had them during launch.
    • NFTs have become a secure way to transmit content ideas without needing the approval of a media company or retailer. These institutions usually have their own agenda or rules on their platform.

[49:03] “There's no middleman. There's no intermediary. There is no third party, or there doesn't have to be with NFTs in the blockchain.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

Find out more about Ron and his work as a keynote speaker and author on his website. Reach out and contact Ron here.

Episode Highlights[02:05] What Does Ron Karr Do?
    • Ron helps organizations build high-performing sales cultures.
    • Sales culture focuses on the sales team and the organization as a whole. Altogether, they should support the team.

[03:29] Sales Culture in Today’s World
    • Ron would grade the current sales culture of the world a C plus. More and more people develop a self-focus mindset instead of a customer-focused one.
    • There are four kinds of customers. Two are the customer who buys the products and services and the employee who serves the buying customers.
    • A culture that operates on purpose instead of tasks focuses on achieving an outcome. It drives better decision-making skills and prioritization of tasks.
    • Having a clear purpose is critical for the culture. When Ron works with an organization, he first focuses on the C suite to align their purpose and direction.

[06:27] “That outcome invariably drives your decision-making process. And if you're driven by outcome in that task, you will be making better decisions. And you'll do a better job of prioritizing what tasks you should really be working on that are germane to that outcome.” - Click Here to Tweet This[08:35] Empathy in Mindset
    • The unintended conflict between different departments can result from the different mindsets and actions of the individuals.
    • Empathy is an essential trait for sales executives.
    • Being empathetic contributes to the right mindset. It improves your ability to create emotional connections and influence.
    • A customer-focused mindset uses empathy to get to know the customer's struggles. It helps you present information in the proper context.

[10:16] “The key formula for influence is to present what you can do in context to what's important to the person you're talking to.” - Click Here to Tweet[13:11] The Importance of Empathy
    • 80s leadership had an autocratic approach. It slowly evolved to encourage a team collaboration effort where empathy became a key trait.
    • Nowadays, younger generations choose to do what they want instead of following autocratic leadership.
    • Empathy means understanding the different ways people see the world.
    • It has become vital to creating influence. Creating influence becomes difficult if you don't try to understand what others value and how they think.
    • Ron gives a personal experience that showed him the importance of empathy. Tune in to listen to his story about solving the problems between a supervisor and his employee.

[16:34] “If we don't start understanding what they value, and how they think, then how can we create a bridge that will create influence with them?” - Click Here to Tweet[20:24] Learning to Empathize
    • Ron knew he had to learn empathy to create the influence he needed in his career.
    • He realized that there are differences in the ways people see the world with the help of his daughter.
    • Through communication, they were able to understand each other’s perspectives better.  They took into account their needs and moved forward together.
    • Empathy doesn’t mean agreement. It means taking time to try to understand different perspectives.
    • In one of Ron’s experiences, he spoke to an organization facing a big merger. Through conversation, Ron was able to facilitate and learn to engage the members.

    [26:52] The Importance of Listening
    • Hearing is taking what someone says and shaping it into your world. Listening is doing the same, but this time from their world.
    • On stage, a speaker is constantly listening to the audience.
    • Reading the energy in the room is vital to address the people. It shows how present and relevant you are as a speaker.
    • Ron never gives the same speech in the same way. It is because he’s listening to what the audience’s energy is saying.

[27:10] “Listening is when you put your world aside and you're hearing their words from their world.” - Click Here to Tweet This[30:30] The Intention of Velocity Mindset
    • The intention of the book Velocity Mindset is not necessarily focused on sales culture. Instead, it tackles mindset and leadership because these are part of improving.
    • We create obstacles that prevent our progress.
    • Keep the good stories that are positive and motivate you. Rewrite the stories that are negative and can hinder you.
    • Everybody is a leader in the different aspects of their lives. The question is if you’re a leader who pushes forward.

    [32:56] Behind the Book
    • Before writing the book, Ron was spending time recovering from surgery. Ron realized it was time to push past his obstacles and find a way to move forward.
    • Velocity means speed with direction. Direction is the purpose that dictates where we’re going.
    • Ron’s mission is to help people be sure of their purpose. Having a purpose-oriented mindset can help them make better decisions and accomplish more.
    • Being a better leader, manager, or salesperson means improving yourself.
    • “Velocity” grabs the reader’s attention. “Mindset” is how your mind operates and sees the world. The subtitle then shares the expected outcome from reading the book.

    [37:09] A Holistic Approach
    • Velocity Mindset sold well.
    • The book has a holistic approach to influence. It paints a bigger picture to understand engagement and gives an insight into people’s actions.
    • As a leader or salesperson, you need the efforts of others to go much further.

[39:37] Who Should Read Velocity Mindset?
    • Velocity Mindset is for salespeople, entrepreneurs, and managers.
    • However, anyone who wants a firmer grasp and direction on their purpose can also read it.
    • It can also help those who find themselves held back by obstacles.
    • We are all leaders. A title isn’t all that makes a leader.
    • The critical question is if you live your life like a leader.

    [43:00] A Leader’s Word
    • Your employees do more than listen to what you say. They watch your actions and often follow your lead.
    • Organizational accountability is the sum of individual accountability. Before you make promises to others, keep the promises you make to yourself.
    • Many people aim for perfectionism and goodism. Both of these encourage people to make promises that they may not keep.
    • As a leader, it’s important to build people’s trust by keeping your word is essential. Failing to do so becomes an obstacle to progress for you and your team.
    • A person who doesn’t keep their word would discourage others from following them.

[47:11] “Our word is so important. You could lose your family (I hope you don’t), you can lose your money and lose your house. You can even lose your hope (I hope you don’t do that). But if you have one thing left intact, which is your word, you can always find someone to take a gamble on you a second time.” - Click Here to Tweet This[48:38] Pausing for Greater Velocity
    • Contrary to what many might think, pausing can help you gain higher velocity.
    • Sometimes, people try and try again only to get the same result. Pausing can help you figure things out.
    • Ron’s first sales job was selling copiers in the 1980s. He spends months trying to sell and failing. His repeated rejections caused him to create negative stories and emotions.
    • He took time to pause and clear out the negative stories.
    • Once he was thinking clearly, he realized the actions he needed to change to start selling.

    [53:34] Defining Success
    • Ron states that there is not just one definition of success. It varies per person.
    • As a leader, the critical question is how the people you’re working with define success.
    • In 1988, Ron faced a difficult time with his family. Both his parents were near death.
    • During that emergency, he paused to clarify what success meant in that situation and what actions could lead to success.
    • When you’re having difficulty defining success, you can ask yourself what you don’t want to happen. Figure out the paths that will keep you moving forward.

    [59:54] Creating Amongst Competition
    • Don’t worry about the competition and what they’re creating. Instead, focus on creating different.
    • Focus on filling in the gaps and giving solutions to their existing problems.
    • It separates you from the competition.
