She is also the co-owner and serves as a board member in an advisory role in their family business Western Asset Protection.

Mari is the author of the book #KeepGoing, where she talks about her unique and inspiring methods on how to overcome life’s toughest challenges.

You can connect with Mari through her website and LinkedIn.

Episode Highlights[02:33] Mari’s Passions in Life
    • Mari is a Certified EOS Implementer who helps entrepreneurs and leadership teams get traction in their business.
    • Her real passion in life is breaking down the confines between business and personal and helping people “be the bison.”
    • She loves sharing her story because it allows others to process their lives.

[03:31] “I love sharing my story, not for the sake of sharing my story, but because I know when I share my story that other people are listening autobiographically. So they are processing their own life and their own struggles in this psychological safety of my story.” - Click Here To Tweet This[04:42] Integration, not Balance
    • There’s no such thing as “balance”; instead, there is the integration of all parts of your life.
    • The wheel of life allows you to score where you are in life.
    • There will be seasons of life where one thing will be at 0 to 1 for years. That’s because it’s not time to address it yet.
    • Having a constant awareness of the seasons of your life allows you to make necessary course adjustments

[06:51] Accepting the Messiness in Our Lives
    • All segments of your life are integrated. It’s not good to compartmentalize.
    • It’s about accepting the messiness that comes with different parts of our life and having self-compassion.
    • Self-compassion is about creating a pause in your day. It comes with responsibility or the ability to control your response.
    • Once we become conscious and aware of the messiness in our lives, we can make different decisions.

    [12:32] The Challenge for Women
    • The roles society has ascribed to women have made the process more challenging for women.
    • Not being the same person in each of those roles makes it easier.
    • For one, it's harder for women to climb the ladder to the next position.
    • Inclusion means accepting people for their whole life and the other roles they have in their lives. However, it can make a woman feel inadequate at work and home.
    • Women are naturally terrible delegators. One exercise to address this is to “delegate to elevate.”

[18:31] Being in a Privileged Position
    • Being privileged is not even knowing something’s an issue. Many of us have some level of privilege, from our gender, race, etc.
    • Many people recognize the system but are not talking or are scared to talk about it.
    • Sticking your neck out is difficult, but it’s about raising awareness and having empathy.
    • Going from unconscious incompetence to conscious incompetence is a highly uncomfortable place. But it's a starting point for getting involved.

[23:57] The Story of #KeepGoing[24:19] “That's the risk, first of all, of writing something so deeply personal and sharing something so deeply personal because people are going to read it from their perspective, from their lenses, their lenses in life.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Children act out because they seek connection without knowing how to get it.
    • Mari got sexually abused at nine years old, which continued until she got counseling at 19. It changed the way she operated in relationships.
    • Going through puberty early can cause confusion and a false connection with adults.
    • Her brother's death made her feel an urgency to fix her life and create a great life for herself.

[28:14] “I could see other people having really great experiences; I just didn't understand why I didn't deserve that too. But I knew or felt that no one else was going to ever create that for me—I was going to have to create that for myself and figure that out.”  - Click Here To Tweet This[29:21] The Silver Linings in Her Journey
    • Her coping mechanism is envisioning the future. Most visionaries have experienced trauma that they had to imagine a better future to get through it.
    • The hard things in our lives are like nuclear energy that can power or destroy a city.
    • You don't ever get to get rid of that nuclear energy. But you can use it to create leverage to move forward from time to time.
    • There is no checkbox in the journey toward healing from trauma or loss.
    • The silver lining lies in turning our experiences into a gift for yourself and the world around you.

[32:44] “Being anything other than grateful is going to shut you down, and it's going to remove you from the realm of possibility. It's going to keep you small, it's going to keep your energy small, and it's going to keep you sick.”  - Click Here To Tweet This[34:07] The Catalyst for Sharing Her Story with the World
    • Whenever she shares any part of her story, it helps other people.
    • Mari wants to move on from telling her story because it will not serve her to get to the next level.
    • She’s currently working on the next chapter of her story, #StopRunning.
    • Writing about something you don’t want to discuss is a cathartic process.
    • Vulnerability is efficient. It’s excruciating, but it’s the fastest way out of pain.

    [37:28] Mari’s Definition of Success
    • She didn’t know the definition of success until the time he heard a question from Tony Robbins. He asked, “How much money would you need to never have to work again?”
    • Following others might lead you to follow their path and definition of success.
    • Mari defines success as doing the work she loves with the people she loves.
    • God’s plan is for her to be an example of love for herself and others.

[41:29] What Mari is Excited About as an EOS Implementer
    • She’s excited about continuing her work with EOS, the Entrepreneurial Operating System, based on the book Traction by Gino Wickman.
    • EOS implementers help people implement this system of getting traction and staying accountable in their business.
    • 450 EOS implementers worldwide work with companies with between 10 to 250 employees.
    • She's excited about merging the concepts of leadership and self-development with EOS practices and delivering that talk around the world.
    • You will hit ceilings as a business and as an individual. Most of the time, we are unaware we're hitting the ceiling.

    [45:26] The Power of Self-Awareness
    • Personality assessment and coaching are helpful because they reflect what you're saying to yourself or each other as a team.
    • You shouldn’t be a leader if you’re not getting coaching. Otherwise, you’re not elevating.
    • You cannot lead unless you are elevating yourself consistently.

[45:53] “If you are a leader, and you're not getting coaching, you probably shouldn't be a leader because there is no way you're elevating.”  - Click Here To Tweet This[48:14] Tapping into the Human Consciousness
    • You will find a way to consume information if you’re hungry enough.
    • Reading and listening to podcasts are tapping into the best of human consciousness.
    • Mari wants her readers to become aware of their own stories and what they haven't addressed in their lives.
    • Changing our natural trajectory requires going back, digging in, and healing stuff in our lives.
    • The more we heal, the more love we have. The more love we have, the better we do in the world and the more people we can help.

    [52:46] Seek
    • Mari is always seeking what’s next on how she can grow, learn, and make something better.

    Wrapup

Our past experiences—good or bad—shape how we think and transform how we view the world.

Mari Tautimes began this episode by sharing her passion—her story to help people process their own lives. She talks about seeking integration in the different aspects of our lives instead of finding balance. She also explains why we should accept the messiness in our lives with self-compassion and responsibility. Only then can we start to make new and better decisions for ourselves.

Then, she shares the story of #KeepGoing and the silver linings she found in healing from her past trauma. There is no checkbox in this journey; the key is to turn your experiences into a gift for yourself and others. Finally, success should come on your terms, not what others say it should be. Only you can define your success.

  • The Seven Foundations of Freedom

Do you feel free with your life, or are you in pursuit of freedom only you understand? Have you ever thought about what attaining freedom really means? Freedom means different things to different people. Like other complex concepts, there's no one way to define freedom. However, there are foundations of freedom that can guide us toward living a free life in the bigger picture.

In this episode, Tim discusses seven foundations of freedom. He talks about how others define the concept and its “ultimate” form in the spiritual sense. Finally, Tim shares the story of the 100-year-old Guinness World Record holder for working at one company for 84 years.

If you’d like to learn how to work on your life’s seven foundations of freedom, tune in to this episode!

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Reflect and understand your definition of freedom.
    2. Discover seven foundations of freedom.
    3. Learn why attaining spiritual freedom is key for aligning the foundations of freedom.

Episode Highlights[01:50] Tim’s Foundations of Freedom
    • Tim identifies seven foundations of freedom.
    • They're not in order nor definitive.
    • What inspired the topic was a story Tim read in his newsletter. It's about the person who set a world record for having worked in one job for the longest period.

[02:54] Seek, Go, Create Audience’s Definition of Freedom
    • Tim turned to the podcast audience’s definition of freedom.
    • Some say that freedom is never free, life-changing, something you fight for, and only achieved in peace.
    • Some also brought up the different types of freedom, i.e., spiritual and worldly.
    • Others say it is another word for “nothing left to lose,” “found in Jesus,” “having choices,” and “elusive in this world.”

    [10:49] Freedom and Independence Day
    • We often associate the word with Independence Day. The events during the holiday are related to the word in many ways.
    • But there are various layers to freedom, including spiritual, physical, financial, and political.

[12:53] #1: Freedom is Not Specific to a Country, Politics, or Geographic Location
    • This sentiment is near to Tim’s heart because he and his wife do not have a geographic-specific location.
    • The USA doesn’t own the concept of freedom. There is freedom in other parts of the world.
    • Many people feel limited in life because they believe their children must attend school in one geographic area. Homeschooling showed Tim that this is not the case.
    • There's a certain degree of freedom in not believing that you have to live in one place.
    • Political structures, in reality, are all about limiting a lot of freedom. No political party is “freer” than the other.

[16:14] “There's a certain degree of freedom to not believing that you have to live in one place.” - Click Here to Tweet This[18:46] #2: Other People’s Opinions Do Not Impact Freedom
    • We have the freedom not to allow what other people think about us to control us.
    • Freedom has to do with the ability to control our world and life.
    • Other people's opinions significantly impact the elements explored in the first foundation. The other side of the coin is allowing those opinions to control us.
    • Social media has a huge role to play in this. It allows both positive and negative comments to impact what we think about ourselves.

[18:51] “Freedom is not impacted by other people's opinions. In other words, we have the freedom to not allow what other people think about us to control us.”  Click Here to Tweet This[20:54] #3: Freedom from Emotional Turmoil
    • We often allow our emotions to control us.
    • Relating to the second foundation, we allow what other people think of us to impact our emotions and seep into our souls.
    • Allowing our emotions to control us impacts many things in our disposition.
    • Freedom from emotional turmoil doesn’t mean being emotionless. It’s about not allowing negative, destructive emotions to control us.
    • Emotional turmoil robs us of the freedom we have the opportunity for in life.

    [23:14] #4: Freedom of Time
    • It’s the ability to do what you want to do when you want to do it.
    • There’s freedom when we’re free from the burden of the past or the future. There’s also freedom when can operate in the present.
    • What does “eternal life” really mean? What is the freedom we may have if we truly understand this concept?
    • It’s also about freedom from death that ties down with spiritual freedom.

[24:40] “There's freedom when we're not burdened by either the past or the future—we're able to really operate in the present.” - Click Here to Tweet This[26:51] #5: Having Clarity and Meaning in our Purpose in the World
    • Many of us go through life without understanding where we fit in the bigger picture.
    • There’s freedom when we gain clarity on what our assignment is in God’s Kingdom.
    • There’s a lot of freedom in knowing what we’re destined and not destined to do.

[27:32] “I think there are times where we look at other people, and we think we need to do what they're doing or ‘I should do that and copy them.’ I think if we are really clear, or at least more clear about who we are and what we're created to do, that there's just a lot of freedom in that.” - Click Here to Tweet this

    [28:39] #6: Financial Freedom
    • Financial freedom means having the money or resources to do what you want. It relates to time.
    • It's difficult to do anything without financial resources. There are a lot of burdens that come with this limit in resources.
    • Financial resources are an essential foundation for freedom.

    [31:17] #7: Spiritual Freedom
    • Spiritual freedom means knowing there's something bigger in the world than you.
    • It's the freedom to ask what’s your place in the bigger picture and learn the world doesn't revolve around you.
    • Our mission is to step into the kingdom God has created and identify our assignment.
    • Attaining spiritual freedom leads us to eternal life and all the other foundations aligning.

[32:00] “God created us, and He created us for a purpose, for a reason…Our real mission here is to step into that puzzle or that kingdom that he's created and identify what our assignment is. That is our purpose, and there is true freedom when we step into that.”  - Click Here to Tweet[33:50] Living a Life of Freedom
    • 100-year-old Walter Orthmann has set the Guinness World Record for working at a single company for 84 years.
    • He started as a shipping assistant in a textile company at age 15. He worked his way up to become a sales manager and still holds the position with no plans to retire.
    • Walter’s reason is he believes what counts is the present and not the past or future.

    About Kate

Kate Smith finds the good, the funny, and the happy in everything. With this mission, she and her husband Ryan run the Kate Smith Company, an art licensing business focusing on greeting cards. Kate wants to help people see the simple joys all around them through the art she makes on greeting cards, stationery, and gift products.

If you'd like to reach out to Kate, check out the Kate Smith Company website and Instagram.

Episode Highlights[06:18] How Kate Got into Greeting Cards
    • Kate used to work in advertising and treated her boss’s encouragement as permission to pursue her business idea.
    • She started writing greeting cards on folded pieces of paper and persevered even if things didn’t look good initially.
    • Kate launched a collection of 50 cards at the National Stationery Show in New York. Target and Recycled Paper Greens discovered her work.
    • A year later, Target featured her collection.
    • Kate was very artistic as a kid and joined coloring contests when she was young. She came from an artist family, and her mom supported her.

    [11:47] The Greeting Cards Industry
    • There's a decline in the industry, but millennials are bringing it back by sending cards.
    • Kate observed how COVID was an incredible moment for greeting cards because cards could reach places humans could not.
    • There's always relevance for communication and words. As long as language remains vital in the world, greeting cards will still have a place in it.
    • There are more human ways to communicate that you don't get through digital. Digital enables us to stay in touch with family and loved ones, but it leaves you wanting.

[12:36] “COVID actually was a wonderful moment for greeting cards. Greeting cards could get into hospitals, greeting cards could get into nursing homes, greeting cards could get into places that humans could not get into.” - Click Here To Tweet This[19:53] Kate’s Work Flow in the RV
    • Kate prefers to stay a little longer in the places they visit, enabling her to get a better vibe of the community.
    • She thinks it's a bit tough because the RV functions as many rooms depending on the occasion, and it’s hard to separate them.
    • Kate found many benefits from memberships in co-working spaces or going to coffee shops and RV clubhouses. They help her focus and separate where she works from where she lives.
    • She maintains a lean workflow that’s primarily digital with an iPad Pro, a little printer, and a few art supplies.
    • Kate gets a lot of inspiration from moving around by observing people and applying them to her art.

[22:58] “From all of this moving around and place changes, I actually get a lot of inspiration from it. People are what I take most of my inspiration from.” - Click Here To Tweet This[26:17] How Kate Spends Her Time and Defines Success[30:48] “Be protective of how much you put on your plate and what you put on your plate, because [you] have to leave space for the possibilities. Otherwise, I think the magic of what people have come to you for in the beginning goes away.” - Click Here To Tweet This
    • Ryan, Kate’s husband, handles the non-creative and administration side of their business, allowing her to focus on creating their products.
    • Kate spends 45% of her time ideating. The remaining time goes to execution and making the greeting cards.
    • When she feels burnout, Kate notes that the ideation phase energizes her. She allows herself a little space to try some of her ideas and just mess things up.
    • Kate sometimes worries if she’s supposed to do business a certain way. Growth is good for small businesses, but you should ask if you need it or if it’s making you happy.
    • Her business doesn’t operate like others. She learned to not think of how it should be and just do things and see where it goes.

[33:52] “When you have a small business, you're conditioned to think that you just grow. You just grow and growth is always good. And, I don't think it always is. I think that you need to look at what's gonna make you happy and why.” - Click Here To Tweet This[39:32] The Beginnings of Kate’s RV life
    • Years ago, Kate realized she was already living the successful life many imagine but still felt something was missing.
    • Ryan was also experiencing stress from not enjoying his job anymore.
    • Kate thought of incorporating travel into their lives.
    • From there, it took them two years to transition into RV life. They slowly sold most of their belongings.
    • During the first year of RV life, Kate was very anxious. She realized she strictly needed to budget since she was used to money coming in seasonally as a freelancer.

[50:14] Difficulties in the RV World
    • Kate faced difficulties dealing with the lack of community and leaving the people they bonded with when moving places.
    • They come home occasionally to connect with family and long-time friends.
    • They always make sure to come out and interact with the people in the places they go to. They also meet like-minded people who share the same lifestyle. Co-working with others also helps.

    [55:12] Making Humans Smile Club
    • Kate created the Making Humans Smile Club, a group of like-minded friends who want to spread good to the world. It’s a community of people who want to do little things daily for someone else.
    • The Making Humans Smile Club is Kate’s way of building a ripple effect of joy and good vibes.
    • Her mission is not about promoting positivity all the time. She believes that sadness, pain, and hardships exist in this world. Because of them, we need joy and should share it with others.
    • Bring joy to others by making a puffy face and make sure they send their puffy face back to you too.
    • If you have a business or are doing something you’re unsure of, just do it anyway. Action helps quiet down fear and anxiety. Bet on yourself always, most especially on the big and scary things.

[57:08] “I'm also the first person to say that that's exactly why we need joy, and a continual stream of it is because of the existence of pain of sadness, of challenge and hardship.” - Click Here To Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

    • Stuart found writing a challenge. He needed to seclude himself for two weeks to write The New World of Entrepreneurship.
    • The pandemic changed the landscape of entrepreneurship.
    • The book outlines what it takes to be a formidable entrepreneur. It also discusses strategies for buying, developing, and selling your business.

    • Interest in robotics will increase as businesses transition to the new normal.
    • There’s also a looming recession and a rise in the interest rate.

    [24:46] On Government Intervention
    • Unlike the United States, the pandemic didn’t affect Latin American countries much.
    • Stuart claims that there should be less government involvement.
    • The free market should be allowed to function on its own.

[27:10] “[The government] shouldn't really intervene. They should let the free market just do what it has to do.” - Click Here To Tweet This[28:43] The Meso Economics
    • To survive, business owners must hack the economic system.
    • It's the small and medium-sized enterprises that generate 80% of employment.
    • Working hard isn't the only thing necessary to keep your business afloat. You must find strategies to keep your company growing.

    [33:59] Stuart’s Entrepreneurship Journey
    • Stuart had to move from one place to another because of his father’s profession. The experience allowed him to meet and connect with different people.
    • When Stuart first started working, he focused on business development.

    [38:14] The Xennials
    • People born between Generation X and the millennial generation are called Xennials.
    • Stuart considers Xennials a powerful generation. They still remember the pre-digital world but can adapt to the digital era.

[41:08] “[Xennials are] very valuable for organizations…they're going to have a really ample view. They are going to be very strategic about things. Even if they were never taught about strategy or anything, you want to plug some of those in.” - Click Here To Tweet This[43:17] Experiencing Different Cultures
    • People are the same across cultures.
    • Traveling and immersing with different folks help change your perspective in life.

[43:42] “Everybody's the same everywhere. There’s no difference. There's going to be stuff that was influenced by the religions, brought up with the climate, the weather, something that makes people certain way. It really does.” - Click Here To Tweet This[48:48] On Stuart’s Success and Failures
    • Having built and sold his first two ventures was a sign of success for Stuart. He would not have been led to Briggs if it hadn't been for this decision.
    • Handling vast enterprises is a learning experience.
    • A broken partnership thwarted Stuart's ambition for a start-up.
    • Be careful of people who don't honor agreements.

[55:06] On What Makes a Successful Exit
    • People who have acquired and sold businesses will likely succeed when selling their own.
    • Preparing an exit strategy for your company requires different skills and knowledge.

[56:38] “The ones who do well are the ones who already did a transaction once. It wasn't sexy, but they got to learn. They got on the other side of the world. It’s so different. Your vision as a business owner, as an entrepreneur, changes so dramatically.”  - Click Here To Tweet This[01:00:57] For Whom Is Stuart’s Book?
    • Stuart recommends The New World of Entrepreneurship for business owners who have been in the field for more than a decade.
    • It will also benefit those planning to sell their company and wondering where to start.

    [01:06:00] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • You need to go and look for opportunities to establish a thriving enterprise.
    • However, you should also create ideas for your business.

His first firm, Online Access, was named one of the 500 fastest-growing companies. After selling the said business, Jordan founded RedFlash, a management company that focuses on business development work.

Apart from being an adept businessman, he is also the author of How They Did It: Billion Dollar Insights from the Heart of America, which talks about the inspiring stories of billionaires in America. You can connect with Robert through InterimExecs or at the Right Leader.

    Episode Highlights[03:30] Robert, The Matchmaker
    • Robert is a matchmaker who helps companies find the exemplary leadership they need.
    • He started to delve into leadership training and entrepreneurship at a young age.
    • Leaders are wired in different ways.

[06:12] “Leaders are wired in an infinite variety of ways. And that doesn't mean that everyone is going to end up being the next CEO of Google.”  - Click Here to Tweet This[08:05] Leadership Roles
    • Robert dabbled in student leadership during his time at the University of Michigan.
    • Outstanding and principled leadership can solve problems.
    • Leadership should not be associated with government and politics only.
    • Taking responsibility for someone within an organization is what leadership entails.
    • There are four leadership styles: Fixer, Artist, Builder, and Strategist.

[09:27] “Our definition at its broadest of a leader is if you're in an organization, and you have responsibility for someone else, you're a leader. And so whether that someone else is literally an employee, or is it a client relationship, you're evidencing leadership.” - Click Here to Tweet This[15:43] The Current State of Leadership
    • There are still many challenges in leadership today.
    • When people don’t understand their company’s mission, it indicates a failure in leadership.
    • Technology cannot entirely measure leadership.

    [18:50] Sense of Spirit
    • While there are still significant challenges in leadership, others have made it their goal to address these concerns.
    • Leadership trainers and developers have the same life mission, which gives them a shared sense of morality and spirit.
    • Leaders fail because they miss the foundational principles of leadership.

    [23:04] Robert’s Leadership Experience
    • At the age of 28, Robert filed for bankruptcy.
    • While he considers the failure of his first business as the lowest point of his life, Robert is still thankful for the experience.
    • People who survived failed ventures become tougher and more knowledgeable.
    • Business school cannot help you solve all the challenges you encounter in the business world.

[26:27] “When you've already gone to the worst point you can in business, which is to say you've gone bust and you come out the other end of it,  what I found was that no matter the situation that the client was in…it's a little like someone surviving battle, that you get battle hardened.” - Click Here to Tweet This[29:38] The Interim Executives
    • The concept of Interim, Project, Contract, and Fractional executives started in Europe.
    • Businesses developed the concept of interim executives when companies discovered they were constantly recruiting outsiders who were uninvested in the business.
    • Many professionals wouldn’t stay in the company for their entire careers. Businesses should adapt and accept this trend.

[35:34] The Billion Dollar Insights from the Heart of America
    • Robert was fortunate to have partners that built their firm into a high-revenue enterprise within five years.
    • He realized that publishing a book detailing the remarkable stories of billionaires would be his way of giving back to the community.
    • Tune in to the entire podcast to know why Robert was captivated by the story of David Miller, the proponent of artificial hips and knees.
    • The best leaders are committed to achieving the “highest and best use.”

    [41:28] Right Leader, Right Time
    • Robert and Olivia discovered the four distinct leadership styles while observing their clients at InterimExecs.
    • Their discovery immediately led to the publication of the Right Leader, Right Time.

[43:50] “But the concept of bringing great accountable leadership to organizations needs to be based on fit and situation and not on what timing is.” - Click Here to Tweet This[44:47] Results of a Bad Match
    • Leaders cannot cater to all people.
    • Collaboration is necessary.
    • Each team member has complementary skills that may benefit the organization.

    [47:41] Styles as DNA
    • Leadership styles are like DNA.
    • Each individual possesses the four styles of leadership, but one is dominant.
    • Leaders must be accountable. Being otherwise could result in the four D’s: Dilution, Delusion, Detours, and Downfall.

[48:28] “All great leaders have elements of a fixer, an artist, a builder and a strategist. Everyone does. It's just that successful people have a dominant trait.”  - Click Here to Tweet This[51:26] The Four Styles
    • Fixers are motivated to save organizations.
    • Artists are driven by creativity and view their clients as blank canvas.
    • Builders have market domination over the brand. They think of repeatable processes for success.
    • Strategists operate at a scale. The company’s mission and vision are central to what they do.
    • Listen to the entire podcast to discover your leadership style!

    [56:02] The Next Step
    • Discuss your leadership style with your coworkers.
    • Society thinks that technology can measure performance, but on the contrary, it's humanity's greatest desire to be acknowledged.
    • It's crucial to have a deep conversation about discovering oneself.

[58:30] Coming Up With The Title
    • Robert and Olivia’s editor suggested the title: Right Leader, Right Time.
    • People must not be hesitant to learn more about themselves.
    • It is incorrect to believe that successful individuals excel in all parts of their lives. You must learn to work with others.

    Wrapup

Everyone has their way of managing people, whether they are the head of a family, an entire business, or somewhere between.

Robert began this episode by emphasizing the importance of recognizing your leadership style. Knowing whether you're a Fixer, Artist, Builder, or Strategist allows you to explore the behaviors that assist or prevent you from achieving your goals. At the same time, he also reminded us not to be afraid of examining our true selves. After all, a deep awareness of oneself results in a better management style.

Finally, after figuring out who you are as a leader, the process of growth should not end there. You must communicate with your colleagues properly and learn to collaborate effectively. You cannot succeed in business alone, just as you cannot thrive in any other aspect of life on your own.

  • Becoming an Effective Modern-Day Leader

Every day, we strive to be the best leaders we can be. Leadership is foundational for success in any setting, from business and ministry to personal life. However, being a leader in today's world poses numerous challenges, as we frequently lose sight of what authentic leadership entails.

In this episode, Tim reminds us of what makes good leadership. When we make mistakes or falter as a leader, we must always fall back on the importance of our relationship with God. By reflecting on what God wants us to do, we can see the path toward effective leadership more clearly than before.

Listen to the episode to learn how good leadership is linked to stewardship and seeking God's heart.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Find out how Tim and several other listeners define leadership so that you can draw yours.
    2. Learn how good leadership is inextricably linked to our relationship with God.
    3. Understand modern challenges affecting effective leadership and how to overcome them.

    Resources
    • Spiritual Leadership: Who Needs It? by Chip Brogden
    • 1 Samuel 8: 4-22 from the Holy Bible
    • Why the Ultimate Leader is a Steward Leader from Season 3 of Seek, Go, Create

Episode Highlights[02:24] The Issue with Today's Leaders
    • This episode's topic was ignited by Tim’s disappointment over leaders who no longer lead and represent Christ.
    • Many people have lost faith in leaders and no longer believe what they see or hear in politics.
    • He calls both political parties' leaders hypocritical because they advocate for one thing while doing something else, shattering our trust.

    [04:12] Leadership and Faith
    • Chip Brogden's article was about his struggles with organized religion.
    • Chip's relationship with God was formed through being led by the Lord rather than through churches and religion.
    • It is challenging to have a genuine relationship with God in modern times because of spiritual leadership's authoritative and dictatorial nature.

[06:24] Leaders from the Old Testament
    • Tim reflects on the ineffective leadership depicted in the Book of Judges.
    • It is an example of people disconnecting from their faith and reconnecting with God because of a highly flawed judge, then repeating the cycle after a few years.
    • This cycle reflects modern times and how we need a push to rekindle our spiritual relationship with God, even though we should have one regardless of circumstance.

[08:37] The Prophet Samuel and Leadership
    • Tim uses scripture to define good leadership.
    • The people of Israel begged the prophet Samuel to give them a leader in the Book of Samuel, but it was not God's perfect will.
    • For wisdom and guidance, Christ's followers must go directly to God.
    • However, our desire to go to people who act as intermediaries between God and us causes failure and the challenges we face in our faith.

[08:45] "I believe that often what we’re doing with leadership is we’re trying to do something like the nation of Israel was doing in the book of Samuel. We’re begging for something that is not the perfect will of God. It’s God’s permissive will." - Click Here to Tweet This[11:21] The Ultimate Leader
    • Tim shared his thoughts on leadership from a Bible school setting in a previous podcast episode and how this example deviated from Christlikeness, which grieved him.
    • People are torn between creating an organization that appears to care for everyone involved and genuinely showing Christ-like love to others.
    • We can avoid turning our leaders into idols by being cautious of them. Expecting more from our leaders creates problems in various systems, including political and religious ones.

[12:59] "First of all, I want to put the responsibility on us, as people that attempt to have leaders that we expect more out of than we should. (…) We really make idols out of leaders. When someone becomes an idol, then I think we’re heading for some type of failure or challenge. First of all, that’s on us. We need to be cautious of that." - Click Here to Tweet This[13:35] What We Should Expect from Our Leaders
    • We need to recognize that our primary responsibility is to have a relationship with the Lord, not with the leader guiding us.
    • While we adhere to a spiritual structure and system, the Lord desires to have a personal relationship with each of us.
    • When we include ego, money, and greed in our spiritual connection, we lose touch with God.

    [14:30] Listeners' Definitions of Leadership
    • On LinkedIn, John Gibson shared that leadership is the ability to take people where they could not or would not go on their own.
    • From Tim's Facebook page, Mark Salazyn said leadership is realistic optimism.
    • On Instagram, Jesse Perez noted that leadership is instrumental to change.
    • From the Seek Go Create's Facebook page, Sabrina Hammonds said leadership is leading from a place of service—to others and the Kingdom of God
    • Listen to the full episode for more great responses to the question "Leadership is ____."

    [24:29] Leading for Others’ Success
    • Great leaders make their team members feel like real people, not an afterthought.
    • Using the fruits of the Spirit, lead from a place of patience, kindness, and love.

    [25:19] Tim’s Definition of Leadership
    • Being a leader does not mean you're the owner. Instead, you're a steward and caretaker, which shifts your perspective on how you lead.
    • When a steward is entrusted with something for a season, they must return it in a better condition than when they first received it.
    • Stewardship extends to people, places, and things.
    • Treating everything as a gift from God makes taking care of them easier and more natural.

[26:19] "A leader is a steward or caretaker or trustee over those people, places, and/or things that God has given them." - Click Here to Tweet This[31:34] Final Thoughts
    • Tim goes back to the Book of Samuel and the differences between the leaders Saul and David.
    • One difference between the two leaders is that David chose to seek the Lord and do what God intended for him, whereas Saul decided to do things independently.
    • Good leadership is not about following in the footsteps of others but about asking yourself what God wants you to do.
    • Even when we make mistakes, we must seek God's heart at all times.

[34:27] “Leadership is seeking after God’s heart and seeking after what God desires for us to do. It’s that personal relationship.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisWrap-Up

We're all leaders. Good leadership begins with seeking after God's heart. Even when most of the world is conspiring against us, we must rise above every challenge and failure by constantly asking ourselves, "What does God want me to do as His steward?"

  • Intentional Disruptions: Choosing to Take Action with Ben Breier

The onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we see the healthcare system. It’s understandable to start to lose confidence in it. Especially in this day and age where social media and disinformation are prevalent, we forget its contributions, including the drugs and medicine that have helped us live better and longer lives.

In this episode, Ben Breier, equipped with years of experience in the healthcare sector, shares the latest developments in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. He gives us an insider perspective on telemedicine and how it can improve our relationship with healthcare. Ben also discusses his takes on making intentional disruptions, as well as leadership and collaboration as a veteran in the healthcare sector.

If you want to hear the ins and outs of the healthcare sector, then this episode is for you!

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Take a look into the current state of the healthcare industry.
    2. Regain confidence in the healthcare sector, especially during the COVID pandemic.
    3. Learn how to handle stress both individually and as a corporate leader.

    About Benjamin

Benjamin Breier is the former CEO and Board of Directors member of Kindred Healthcare, where he served from March 2015 to December 2021. He is also a member of the Board for the Federation of American Hospitals, the Wall Street Journal CEO Council, and the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council.

Ben is the author of Intentional Disruption. He’s built on decades of experience at nearly every industry level and distilled what he’s learned into lessons that leaders — regardless of industry — can reference to make intentional disruptions by being prepared, intentional, and fearless.

    Episode Highlights[01:52] Introducing Benjamin Brier
    • Ben Brier is a health executive and the former CEO of Kindred Healthcare, where he served for nine years.
    • Ben describes himself as a blue-collar operator of businesses who has worked his way to becoming the CEO of a publicly-traded Fortune 500 company. He specializes in managing companies with “large geographic disbursement of lots of different service sites.”
    • Ben left Kindred Healthcare after it was sold to another strategic healthcare company in Nashville.
    • Ben authored Intentional Disruption, a book on leadership lessons in healthcare, business, and beyond.

[10:35] The COVID Pandemic and Working From Home
    • Ben sees the pandemic as an opportunity to get himself off the road.
    • Since the pandemic started, Ben has started to take more care of his physical and mental health.
    • Ben follows a structured morning schedule with a workout regimen, meditation sessions, a good breakfast, and reading time.

[11:12] The State of the Healthcare Industry
    • Healthcare is a very, very complex industry.
    • The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant issues in our healthcare system, especially in terms of socio-economic disparities.
    • The elderly — our parents and grandparents — are the primary benefactors of our healthcare system. This raises several questions for the industry such as “Where will the money come from?”, “Who pays for it?”, and “How and how much do you get?”

[13:47] “Healthcare is a very, very complex industry. It is not easily understood by most who utilize it, by most who provide care in it, and by most who pay for that care.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[18:16] The Role of the Pharmaceutical Industry
    • The pharmaceutical industry has become both a blessing and a curse within the healthcare system.
    • Many great things have come from research and development, and the deployment of drugs and medicine in the country has helped people live better and longer lives.
    • On the other hand, these companies have also made millions of money from deriving these “historical drugs.”

[22:23] Regaining Confidence in the Healthcare Sector
    • It’s understandable to start to lose confidence in the healthcare system, especially in a world where social media and disinformation are prevalent.
    • Every time you start to doubt the healthcare system, think of the physicians, nurses, therapists, and aides who risk their lives every day.
    • Our personal experiences with health workers, including physicians and clinicians, allow us to regain confidence in the healthcare sector.
    • The digitalization of healthcare (i.e., telemedicine) now allows people to talk to doctors from their homes. This development gives people access to the kind of care they need without having to deal with the other aspects of the system.

[24:17] “Every time a consumer starts to think about a lack of trust in the healthcare system, I want them to think about what our physicians and our nurses and our therapists and our nurse aides.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [28:58] Intentional Disruption in Healthcare
    • Ben believes that most of his successes in his life and career have come from intentional disruption.

[26:40] “I think that Americans should have confidence that we not only have a good health care system and an honest health care system but arguably the best in the world.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Intentional Disruption goes into different stories on business, such as playing offense, being strategic, being good decision-makers, and sticking to your core values.
    • The book emphasizes the importance of “having the willingness in this world to be accountable.”

[36:40] The Power of Collaboration and Leadership
    • Leading an organization is a team sport. It is a collaborative effort.
    • Like in any team sport, you learn through your experiences working with people towards a specific goal.
    • You can only be truly successful through empathy, vulnerability, and collective collaboration transparency.

    [39:40] Redefining Success
    • Every leader must learn to assess their personal and the business’ core values. There must be an alignment between the individual and corporate core values.
    • Learn to define success in a way you feel comfortable.
    • Ben defines success through the state of his stakeholders and employees. Has the company and its service helped them improve?
    • Leadership goes beyond providing quality service for your clients. You must also make sure that the families and dependents of your people are well-taken care of.

    [44:10] Intentional Disruption: The Book
    • Ben describes Intentional Disruption as an almost-autobiography, leadership, and business book.
    • He wrote the book with pen and paper. It took him a year and a half to write, re-type, send it to the editor, move chapters around, and publish it.
    • Writing Intentional Disruption taught him to be organized and disciplined with his thought process.
    • Ben wanted the book to be personal because not everyone “has sat in the chair of being the CEO of an institutional Fortune 500 company.”

    [51:06] Dealing with Stress
    • Stress is inevitable.
    • Nutrition and fitness, and mental health are tied together.
    • Eat healthier food and exercise a few days a week, and you will find that it will have a dramatic effect on your mental health and the clarity and outlook of your life.
    • Find a solid support system.
    • Understand that life is not a straight line of progressions. It will always come with a series of successes and failures. Learn to bounce back and know that you cannot get from Point A to D without any scrapes along the way.

[55:53] Two Years from Now: Ben’s Game Plan
    • Ben wants to get back to work. As a Type A personality, he believes that having idle thoughts and idle time is not particularly helpful to him.
    • He plans to internalize where his energy, effort, and experiences play best in the future to become a good functioning member of society, particularly in the healthcare sector.

[58:23] “I think that there are stages in life where we need to turn around, look at generations behind us and say, ‘Here's some things that I did,’ [or] ‘Here's some things I didn't do well.’” - Click Here to Tweet This

Episode Highlights: Rick Simmons[02:32] Rick Simmons' Calling
    • Rick is a trusted coach to some of the foremost leaders worldwide.
    • Many of his clients asked where they could learn more about what they were taught, so Rick Simmons wrote Unleashed.
    • Before writing the book, he felt that people needed a reference piece to find out how to manage and leverage disruptive periods.

    [11:20] Leadership Ventures
    • Curated moments of disruption are known as a continuum of liminal intensives.
    • A leadership venture is one of the most immersive experiences on that continuum where they take leadership teams to different places.
    • These experiences are meant to be distinctive to test a person's edge.
    • People can access their inner wisdom and gain clarity through leadership ventures.

    [15:00] The Liminal Space
    • The liminal space is a period of discontinuity that creates openness to change.
    • Internal or external change can occur explicitly or implicitly.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn how Rick set out on a quest to discover himself and the liminal space!

“At telos, we define liminal space as a period of discontinuity that creates an openness to change. Periods of discontinuity, a pattern breaking moment that disproportionately opens us up to other changes that may be possible.” - Click Heclickre to Tweet This[24:23] The Spark of Course Correction
    • The spark of course correction doesn't have to come from significant, life-changing events.
    • There is a steady, predictable stream of renewable resources in our professional and personal journeys that we can leverage.
    • Parents shouldn't rob their children of the opportunity to face challenges.

“Our lives are filled with stories of overcoming those challenges, and I think that’s often the way that we learn: overcoming and confronting those challenges.” - Click Here to Tweet This[30:52] Breaking Habits
    • Learn to acknowledge and honor your habits and patterns of behavior because they serve you on some level.
    • Make a list of the things that will be enduring to sort it from what can be changed.
    • If time and completeness aren't constraints, you can design your transformation path.

[37:09] How to Deal with Discontinuity
    • Liminal agility allows you to leverage disruptive moments.
    • Be creative about the small things you can do to see how minor changes can yield significant shifts in perspective.
    • Even if some experiences are difficult and painful, you can focus on the lessons learned instead.

“Be creative about small things they can do, precisely to your question, that can open their eyes to how small changes can yield big shifts in perspective and understanding.” - Click Here to Tweet This[43:00] Learnings from Writing Unleashed
    • Rick and Amy were reminded that the telos institute was made possible by their vastly different yet complementary perspectives and skillsets.
    • Rick usually is the one asking questions, so being interviewed is a period of discontinuity.

[47:06] The Essence of Liminal Spaces
    • We're all the best versions of ourselves we can be at every moment.
    • It's unclear whether doing things differently in the past would have resulted in better outcomes; what matters is that you did your best.
    • When we're in the process of pursuing something, that's the essence of liminal spaces.

“When we’re too far into something to stop but yet not far enough into know how it’s fully going to play out, we learn a lot about ourselves there. For me, that’s the essence of liminal space.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:38] The Mindset of Great Leaders
    • Great leaders are confident in their own and their team's abilities.
    • Along with this assurance, they are also aware that they and their team cannot do it alone.
    • The belief in greatness within and needing others to succeed makes a great leader.

“It seems to me that the intersection of those two things—an enduring belief that greatness is within and it’s available to us and not shy about declaring that, and equally resolute that we cannot do it alone so we’ve got to go arming on—that seems to be the mindset that gets leaders in the right slot and gives followers what they want.” - Click Here to Tweet This[56:12] the lowercase approach
    • The telos institute emphasizes a lowercase approach, as evidenced by its marketing.
    • It is a reminder that you are the source of the drive, creativity, and effort required to achieve your goals.

    Wrap Up

Instead of allowing a period of discontinuity in your life to drag you down, harness its power. Have faith in yourself and your team; you won't be able to overcome obstacles independently. Use liminal spaces to achieve your objectives!

    Episode Highlights

    [02:41] Knowing Your Audience

    • You are allowed to sell your product to whoever and wherever you want.
    • Identifying your niche market or your audience is for marketing purposes only.
    • Knowing your target audience helps create more authentic content.
    • It’s good to start with one specific target audience and then build your niche audience.

    [07:17] Building Your Campaign

    • Do not build your business on one organic social campaign.
    • A diversified marketing plan is the best move.
    • Try other platforms (i.e., email lists).

[09:41] Meredith’s Journey In Digital Marketing

    • Meredith started with a locally-owned magazine franchise, Scout Guide Miami, where she began learning about marketing on Facebook and Instagram.
    • Afterward, she partnered with a woman on an online course, “Instagram Strategy for Busy Doctors,” which she sold through webinars and masterclasses.
    • Meredith decided to launch her business after the local stint.
    • She took classes and got certified as a Facebook and Instagram Ad Manager.

[12:21] “And I saw the power to run [a] digital ad campaign on any platform. You really want to analyze the results and all your numbers and that number component plus the creativity and just the magic of Facebook and Instagram ads launched me. I decided to launch my own business. - Click Here to Tweet This

[14:23] Redefining Success: From CPA to Digital Marketer

    • Meredith used to be a CPA and worked at her dream job at PricewaterhouseCoopers for six years.
    • Our natural progression is to go where we excel in school. Meredith, however, decided to leave and pursue what made her happy.
    • The move came from the drive to create value.
    • People either make a concerted effort to change, or something external pushes them.

    [23:25] Authenticity in Social Media

    • You don’t have to be on social media if you don’t want to. You’re under no obligation to share anything.
    • Business owners do not have to be on social media to operate a business.
    • Social media is a great tool to optimize your brand. Put your pages on your website and give them ways to contact you.
    • B2C companies benefit significantly from using social media digital marketing services. It helps to get personal. Treat it as business media.
    • B2C companies need first to create relationships and instill community with their audience.

[24:53] “No one has to be on social media if they don't want to, and they don't have to share anything that they don't want to share. Now, if you are a business owner, you still don't have to be on social media.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[29:03] Optimizing Social Media for Business

    • Customers undergo a journey through awareness, engagement, subscription, conversion, ending with a sale.
    • It's best to use social media in the early and end stages of the journey.
    • Be consistent in marketing. Consistency wins in the digital marketing services game.

[33:00] “You have to commit to consistency, to showing up, to people knowing that you're going to be there when you say you're going to be there. Promise yourself that you'll be consistent, and you'll engage with people. As they start following you, then you will win as far as building your community.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[34:25] Meredith’s Favorite Social Media Platform

    • The best platform for you depends on your niche audience.
    • Post across platforms and see where your target audience engages with you.
    • Instagram is great for engagement. Instagram stories can make your audience feel like you’re talking to them individually.
    • LinkedIn is good for business to business.

[38:31] Engaging through Facebook and Instagram

    • The best way to utilize digital marketing services is through hashtags because they make your posts searchable.
    • Block out four to five hours once a month, and create a month’s worth of content. Batch, create captions, and schedule.
    • Allot 15 to 30 minutes a day to engage with your ideal audience. Find a hashtag that potential clients use, or engage directly with your following through comments.
    • Make sure to engage in their accounts.

[42:31] Growing your Account using the Big Five Strategy

    • The five content topics that every business needs to post are: education, lifestyle, a villain, personal details, and product service protocol description.
    • Come up with at least four posts for each of the five.
    • Make sure to have a balance between different content topics.

    [45:11] Building Your Brand Story

    • Every business must start with building the brand story.
    • Know your villain by filling in the blank: “If my customer didn’t have to deal with _____, their lives would be easier.”
    • You do not have to talk negatively all the time, but a villain is a great way to connect.
    • You can also make sales pitches, but not every day. Around once a week is sufficient.

[45:49] “You don't want to talk about negatives all the time. But it is a way to connect.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[48:00] Expanding Reach using Digital Platforms

    • Digital marketing services are expensive, and the price is increasing.
    • Facebook and Instagram are one of the least expensive places to advertise.
    • Facebook provides detailed targeting but only warm or cold-ish leads. Use Facebook to identify the audience's characteristics who are likely to buy your product.
    • Facebook and Instagram aren’t the best places to make a sale. Use them to grow your community by gaining followers and building awareness.
    • Google, Pinterest, and YouTube are search engines. You pay for hotlinks, which is why they are more expensive than Facebook and Instagram.

[54:53] Deriving Sales through Digital Marketing Services

    • Ensure that you have a product and offer before investing in digital advertising.
    • Do not directly send digital ads and invite people to buy your product.
    • You can run a digital advertisement for a freebie or a piece of free content and ask for the customer’s email address. Make an offer through email afterward.
    • Pay for the traffic that goes to the freebie.
    • When choosing a freebie, think about one of your products worth five dollars. Instead of making a customer pay for it, ask for their email address.

[01:02:04] “Digital ads are an amazing tool. They can really work to enhance your business, reach new people, and make some sales. And you know what, when you have a good offer, and organically people are buying it, we really can use digital ads to explode your sales.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [01:02:50] Optimizing Digital Advertising

    • Digital advertisements are good tools that can enhance your business’ reach.
    • Use digital advertising to reach new people, make sales, bring more offers, and explode sales.

  • A Pilot’s Mindset: What Good Leadership Looks Like

It’s not always smooth sailing when it comes to flying a commercial plane. Even before take-off, many things are happening at once to make sure the flight gets from point A to point B. Pilots have to adapt quickly to respond to different scenarios whenever they happen. Good leadership isn’t about your position or how snappy your uniform looks. It’s professionalism, maturity, and experience.

In this episode, we talk to Octavian Pantiș and Captain Emil Dobrovolschi, authors of Dark Cockpit: How to Communicate, Lead, and Be in Control at All Times Like an Airline Captain. They share with us the ins and outs of what it takes to be a pilot and how good leadership can steer the entire crew and flight. They also share with us what we can learn from pilots when it comes to responding to crises and being professional at all times.

Listen to the episode if you want to find out how piloting teaches good leadership, and can improve the way you lead your business.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Learn how having a pilot mindset can make you more prepared and confident in dealing with any kind of crisis.
    2. Discover how a piloting mindset can teach you about good leadership in business.
    3. Know how maintaining a dark cockpit can change the way you lead and practice in your business.

    Episode Highlights

[02:11] Getting to Know Octavian and Emil

    • Octavian considers himself to have three hats: being an entrepreneur, an author, and a public speaker.
    • Emil sees himself as a professional. He describes a professional as someone who is doing their best to continually improve themselves and to better serve their clients.

    [05:25] Romania in a Post-Pandemic World

    • Romania, as part of the European Union, is doing well amidst the pandemic. Octavian says the country’s economy is doing well.
    • Recent graduates can find a good job if they are fluent in different languages. Several companies are also investing around the area.
    • Recently, the government launched the digital nomad term which makes it easier for many to work from everywhere. It also makes it easier to get a visa and a work permit.

    [07:41] Emil’s Journey to Becoming a Pilot

    • It was Emil’s childhood dream to become a pilot.
    • He learned day by day and with repetition of exercises, his hard work paid off.
    • He currently flies for the Romanian national carrier, is a senior examiner, and has a license from the European Aviation Safety Agency.
    • Emil wrote a book addressed to generic pilots, people who are piloting their businesses, families, and lives.

    [12:28] The Airline Industry

    • While being a pilot might look like being free from the outside, Emil assures us that it is the contrary. There are many procedures a pilot must follow to make every flight safe.
    • A pilot’s job is a contract to bring people safely and comfortably from point A to point B.
    • As a senior examiner, Emil goes to checking sessions every six months to prove his proficiency and so does every professional pilot.
    • Octavian adds that before the pandemic there were 250,000 commercial planes in the sky at any given moment. When the pandemic hit, this number dropped to 8,000.
    • The number of flights has not recovered to pre-pandemic conditions.

    [16:43] Outsider’s Perspective in the Pilot’s Leadership

    • In the cockpit, there are two persons involved: the co-pilot and the captain of the flight.
    • There are three keys to being a pilot: flight hours, maturity, and ability to take responsibility.
    • Having a pilot’s mindset as a business leader is beneficial. The factors that make a good pilot are also things to look for in good leadership.

[18:42] “Maturity means you understand what’s going on, and you make the best (out of it). You don’t haste into decisions.” - Click Here To Tweet This

    [25:00] Professionalism as a Pilot

    • There are lots of procedures pilots undergo before takeoff to ensure safety.
    • A uniform doesn’t make a pilot and crew — it’s their professionalism and good leadership.

[18:54] “Superior pilots will use their superior experience to prevent a situation where they have to use their superior skills.”- Click Here To Tweet This
    • Listen to the full episode for a story about an incident that was almost a disaster, but was saved by a pilot and crew!
    • Being a pilot requires a higher level of professionalism and skill, taking thousands of hours in simulators to cover any eventuality.

[30:34] How Octavian and Emil Met and Wrote a Book

    • In 2008, Octavian was on a plane with his family for a vacation and had a smooth flight. The pilot turned out to be Emil.

[22:49] “I’m happy to encourage all the listeners, if they’re flying in a plane, they should know that the pilots are qualified to fly the plane. They have the maturity and they have responsibility. They’re not kids. They might seem young, but they’re not kids.”- Click Here To Tweet This
    • The chain of command is critical on a plane. Entrepreneurial crises usually have the business owner being the busiest.
    • In aviation, good leadership means delegating tasks so the pilot can focus on what they alone can do.
    • Octavian invited Emil to conferences where he talked about similar topics and had a great reception despite the different occupations of the audience.
    • Octavian later advised Emil to write a book about leadership in aviation. Emil tells him that they should write it together. =

[38:00] The Meaning of Dark Cockpit

    • The dark cockpit is an aviation term. It means that everything in the airplane is going smoothly.

[33:52] “(Captains) don’t make a decision, they build a decision. They take into account what’s going on here. And they’re not pushed by some tasks that they have to do. Their co-pilot is trained to do the fire extinguishing.”- Click Here To Tweet This
    • As a leader, you must aim to keep a dark cockpit. When there are too many lights and signals going off, you are wearing yourself down.

[42:21] Being in Control Vs. Not in Control

    • Being in control means controlling what you can.
    • You may not be able to avert every disaster, but knowing what to do when you encounter one and having the right attitude, changes the way you lead in your business.
    • In the pandemic, many businesses went down. You can’t control the pandemic, but you can control your response to it.
    • There are always things that are outside your control. But there are things, no matter the environment, that you can do.
    • Anticipate what can happen. Talk to people who have experienced more to broaden what you already know.

[43:28] “Control what you can. It’s the attitude. It’s the spirit of preparedness.”- Click Here To Tweet This

    [48:28] Stewardship Mindset

    • A pilot is a new leader every flight because they don’t get the same crew every time.
    • Everyone in the crew must know their roles and the parts they need to play to make a flight safe and comfortable.
    • Feedback is important in making better decisions. Good leadership means knowing how to accept feedback and encourage real communication.

[52:48] Reader’s Takeaways from Dark Cockpit

    • It was a surprise for Octavian that their initial anticipated readers, the leaders, gave the book to their team so that they can become better leaders on their own.
    • Have a checklist of everything you need to do.
    • No matter the environment you’re in, do not attempt to control everything. Do the maximum of what you can.
    • You cannot succeed by yourself. The bigger your end goal is, the more important it is to be a part of a reliable team. Surround yourself with professionalism.

[57:01] Seek, Go, and Create with Octavian and Emil

    • Emil chose Create. He describes himself as a doer and does things for his career and family.
    • Octavian chose to Go. He advises trying things out and seeing if they work. You can’t tell the difference between a good idea from a bad one unless you try.
