  • Serve God, Not Mammon: Addiction Recovery From Wanting More

Society has conditioned us to want more — riches, houses, cars, followers — we can't get enough. It's not wrong to be ambitious, but addiction to ambition will lead you down a dangerous path. Addiction recovery means understanding that God is more than enough.

As a Christian, you may think you're immune to this addiction since you have a relationship with God. But you're more susceptible than you think. Think about the belongings you've accumulated, how much more you want to earn, how you compare yourself to others.

In this episode, we talk about how an addiction to more can distract us from serving God. Having a relationship with God is not a single decision but a continuous process — you need to keep choosing Him no matter what. We also talk about practical ways you can practice addiction recovery, refocus your attention, and resist the temptation of serving mammon: the representation of the world and materialism.

Listen to the full episode if you want to strengthen your relationship with God and resist the hold of addiction to more.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Understand what an addiction to more is and why it harms our relationship with God.
    2. Learn why we can't serve God and our addiction to more simultaneously.
    3. Discover practical ways toward addiction recovery: keep your focus on God and two mindset changes.

    Episode Highlights

[02:00] Why We Need to Talk About Addiction

    • This episode was inspired by a conversation with Mark Whitacre in a previous episode, where both Tim and Mark realized they had an addiction to more.
    • Tim also realized his upcoming novel has an underlying theme of addiction.
    • We may think that we're blessed with all kinds of growth without realizing we're becoming addicted to getting more.
    • Some people will want to experience as much as possible when they believe life on Earth is all there is.
    • As Christians, we need to remember that life on Earth is short, and Heaven is eternal.

[11:36] What Is an Addiction to More?

    • Many Christians claim to serve God and His Kingdom, but their actions do not reflect their words.
    • Most people think addiction means substance abuse, sex, pleasure, and alcohol. They typically have a negative connotation and are something hard to control.
    • However, society applauds and even rewards addiction to more and material gain. Growth is good, but addiction to it can be dangerous.
    • We've learned to accept the addiction to more.
    • When we become focused on more, it’s really about God not being enough.

[15:18] “I was a spiritual Christian. Yet, I was looking for bigger houses and more business. I would wake up every morning thinking about more and more and more, and thinking that that's what I was designed and created for. I do think that growth is a good thing, but addiction to growth is not necessarily a good thing.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[17:50] How Addiction Harms Our Relationship With God

    • For Christians, our relationship with God should be our priority.
    • If we believe that we need more, we won't think God is enough, and we won't trust Him.
    • This attitude may lead to you wanting to be a god and chase things for yourself.

    [19:25] Addiction to Success

    • Tim shares a synopsis of his upcoming book in the full episode.
    • The novel is about a man going on a journey to redefine success and find addiction recovery from his need to acquire more.
    • Stay tuned for the novel’s release on May 17!

[22:36] The Addiction to More Is Not New

    • The addiction to more is not exclusive to the current times.
    • The Bible describes how people back then defined "more" on their terms rather than through God.
    • The Israelites were freed from Egypt to go to their Promised Land. Even though God's plan was clear, they complained and wanted more comfort on their terms.
    • Addiction recovery requires that we be satisfied with God alone.

[26:37] Why We Can’t Serve God and Be Addicted

    • In Philippians 4:10-14, Paul talks about being content with whatever he has, be it little or much.
    • In Matthew 6:24, Jesus reminds us that we cannot volunteer for two masters. We will naturally hate one and love the other; you cannot serve God and mammon.
    • Mammon is the god of materialism; we may interpret it as money and riches. Materialism is the desire and craving for more.
    • We live in a world that drives us to want more.
    • In the full episode, Tim shares how his family was forced to sell their belongings when his business was failing. He realized how much stuff he accumulated over the years.

[33:37] “You cannot serve God and the addiction to more, it's only one or the other.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [38:26] Who Do You Serve?

    • We need to be honest about who we are really serving.
    • Serving mammon is destructive and leads to death.
    • Tim was able to turn from his path of addiction only because of the financial collapse in the US.

[41:04] “How do we obey God and not mammon? How do we know we're doing it? How do we stay on track? How do we not slip and go from one to the other? I don't believe it's just a decision. I believe it's a process. I believe it's something that we have to be doing on a regular basis.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[40:35] Addiction Recovery: How Do We Obey God?

    • Serving God is not a single decision but a process.
    • Be mindful of your tendency to chase after more.
    • Have the people around you call you out on this behavior.
    • Consistently check yourself. Remember to seek God and His Kingdom first.
    • Practice delayed gratification. If there's something you want, take some time to evaluate if you need it.

[46:59] “We really need to think in terms of being a steward more than an owner. Because if we really do that, then we will look at all the things that we have been blessed with and consider them gifts that we steward over and take care of, not that we own.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[45:56] Two Mindsets to Adopt for Addiction Recovery

    • Society teaches us to own things. However, God teaches us to have the mindset of a steward, not an owner.
    • When we adopt the mindset of a steward, everything becomes a blessing.
    • We need to take care of the things we have. When we're done, we give them back.
    • When we are addicted to more, it’s easy to be dissatisfied and ungrateful. Learn to be grateful for what you have.
    • Remember that addiction to more is insatiable.

[49:10] “When we show gratitude, then we are acknowledging the gift that God has given us. And it really prevents us from having that well up inside of us that we just want more and more and more.” - Click Here to Tweet ThisEnjoy the Podcast?

If this practice continues, we will be left with unsatisfactory outcomes and unmet goals. It could also hinder us from understanding how to carry out the work God has called us to do.

In this episode, Michaela O'Donnell joins us to discuss why working does not define our life's calling. She also shares the findings of her study on how empathy plays a role in achieving success. Finally, she imparts wisdom on doing meaningful work in this fast-paced world.

If you're searching for ways to make your work matter, this episode is for you!

    3 Reasons to Listen:

    • Michaela leads, creates, and strategizes as the head of the De Pree Center.
    • Her life’s mission is to encourage people to think deeply about their work.
    • Some people are not sure of who they are.

    [06:46] On Identity Issues
    • Some people are uncomfortable with defining who they are.
    • Work is so revered in American society that it has become a part of people's identities.
    • When you recognize that your identity is anchored to your work, you start having the tough conversations.

    [09:56] Materialism and Work
    • People are enamored with hustle culture because society has taught us that our value equals the sum of our professional successes.
    • As our society progresses, we must consider how we can stay Christ-centered.

    [15:53] Root of Hustle Culture
    • Michaela acknowledges that she has no idea what causes workaholism.
    • We are called to work for God's Kingdom.
    • America worked hard to construct a new empire and become a world leader.

[16:58] “As people of faith, we are always living in multiple kingdoms. What is our work here? It is to join in the mission of God and be aligned with the Kingdom of God, even though every day we're here in these multiple kingdoms.” - Click Here to Tweet This[19:19] Who is Dr. Michaela?
    • Michaela grew up in a large, Irish, Catholic household where most of her relatives were teachers or business owners.
    • Michaela met her spouse in a seminary, and they married during the Great Recession. They eventually established a creative agency, which they continue to operate today.
    • She pursued a Ph.D. in Practical Theology, with her dissertation focused on work in the changing world.
    • Her field of interest led her to become the Chairwoman of the De Pree Center.
    • The books she wrote and her work in the center help leaders across industries to live lives with Christ at the center.

    [23:23] Knowing Max De Pree
    • Michaela learned from Max not to compartmentalize work from living the word of God.
    • Max considers the mission of the Lord as integral to his business and the product they make.

    [26:42] Redefining Success and Failure
    • There are a lot of success models that don't work. Tune in to the full episode to know the questions Michaela asks in defining success.
    • People are more comfortable talking about their failures than their successes.
    • Each person has their own definition of success, and practicing empathy leads us toward that vision.

    [31:36] Faith and Work
    • Society only applies faith in certain aspects of life, and work is not included.
    • It’s the little things that help us toward our life’s purpose.
    • The story of the Good Samaritan tells us how empathy can be a tool in discovering our own path.

[31:56] “…faith gets segmented to certain brackets, and work is not usually one of them.” - Click Here to Tweet This[36:57] Finding One’s Calling
    • Work and calling are not the same.
    • Calling is a nesting doll in which you can locate the invitation to belong to God at its core. Listen to the whole episode to hear the other remaining layers.

[37:39] “Working and calling are not the same thing. It's just nowhere in the Bible, does it say that calling equals paid work.” - Click Here to Tweet This[42:19] Our Assignment
    • Calling suggests permanence. It’s better to use the term “assignment” because it’s more natural and versatile.
    • However, Michaela still wants to use the word calling because it suggests that we’re compelled to follow God.
    • Compelling others results in genuine followership.

    [47:15] On Impatience Impeding Calling
    • Society has become too impatient in finding its calling.
    • People must see time as an asset instead of a hindrance.

    [52:47] Conflict on Generation Gap
    • Boomers, Millennials, and Gen-Z’s have different expectations.
    • Each generation has its talents stemming from its unique socio-economic locations and cultural realities.
    • The key to resolving conflict among different ages is to engage in conversation.

[57:06] Attempting to Fix The Unfixable
    • There is no definite answer to whether we’re fixing something unfixable.
    • However, we can work with what we have right now.
    • The Kingdom of God always bends toward justice and love. It also promotes redemption and renewal.
    • What we do redounds to the Kingdom of God. Thus, what we are doing is still worthy.

[58:21] “…who knows if this system is redeemable. But as people that live in multiple kingdoms, we trust and believe that the Kingdom of God is on an arc that bends towards justice and love; and is moving toward redemption and renewal.” - Click Here to Tweet This[59:49] Make Work Matter’s Goal
    • Michaela’s book is an invitation to hope.

[58:43] “But we trust that whatever we sow into this system, whether we're burning it down, or adding value back in counts in the Kingdom of God, and so it's worth doing.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • It helps you find meaningful work in the changing world.

    • Bob has conducted studies that focused on people’s thinking patterns.
    • The majority of the population relies on fear as the basis of decision-making.
    • Some of the strongest commitments in society are based on fear.
    • The liberty of formulating an opinion develops one’s character over time.

[51:14] “Yes, you can have an opinion. But just be sure about your beat as much as you can be sure about it. I mean, the you know, these are all things that develop character. And — that's how I ended up measuring character.” - Click Here to Tweet This[53:18] What encourages and discourages Bob

  • The Fourth Foundational Principle of Success: The Wisdom of God and How To Not Fool Ourselves

Every day, we face mountains of information. The question is, do you know how to discern what is true? Many of us seek wisdom through experiences and research, but that's worldly knowledge. Our abilities are limited. We cannot know everything, but the wisdom of God can light your path.

True wisdom — the wisdom of God — comes through the Holy Spirit. When you feel overwhelmed by choices and stress, you need to go to the Lord and let Him guide us.

In this episode, we discuss definitions of wisdom. True wisdom doesn't come only from earthly achievements but through walking with the Lord and trusting in the wisdom of God. Tim also shares three ways to develop wisdom and reconnect with the Holy Spirit.

Listen to the episode if you want to find out how to develop humility, avoid fooling yourself, and gain God-given wisdom.

    3 Reasons to Listen:
    1. Learn what wisdom is, as well as the definition of the wisdom of God.
    2. Discover how we gain wisdom from God and the Holy Spirit and how we can reconnect with Him when we feel disconnected.
    3. Understand Tim’s three practical tips to develop and gain wisdom.

Episode Highlights[00:48] What Wisdom is Not
    • Tim has repeatedly used the phrase "thou shall not fool thyself" in his coaching and writing. For Christians, wisdom comes from a relationship with God.
    • Tim believes wisdom doesn't necessarily come from education, training, and titles.
    • Leadership positions do not mean you have wisdom. You are responsible for gaining and developing your wisdom.
    • We shouldn't believe everything church leaders teach. We must discern whether they're wise or not.
    • We live in a world with a lot of disinformation and people stating things as though they’re the truth.

[11:13] What Do People Think of Wisdom?
    • Tim took to social media to ask followers what they think wisdom is.
    • Among the responses were: ‘fear of the Lord,’ ‘discernment,’ ‘true wisdom is God-given,’ ‘sharing knowledge,’ ‘application of right and good,’ ‘learning from mistakes,’ and more!
    • We often gain wisdom and lessons during difficult times. It also comes from listening and learning from others.
    • Wisdom comes from the Word of God, but you need to have faith that they’re true. Discernment is then the byproduct of wisdom.

[21:55] How Do We Gain Wisdom?
    • One of the foundations of wisdom is gathering information from others.
    • We need to cultivate a spirit of humility. It's dangerous to think that we know more than others.

[22:29] “It's so easy in the world we're in today to kind of get puffed up and think we know things and think we're smart and think we've gathered information. One of the things that we need to be wise about is to admit, maybe we don't.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Remember, our wisdom comes from the Holy Spirit, and it is the wisdom of God that we need. We have a relationship with the Holy Spirit because of our relationship with God.
    • In the full episode, Tim shared a story about how he needed to connect with his RV's manufacturer to repair it.
    • Similar to the RV, God created us with intent. We need to connect with our Creator.

[29:03] “We are created. One of the most important things for us to be able to do is to connect with our Creator.” - Click Here to Tweet This[30:20] God’s Reminders About Wisdom
    • Humanity fell from God's grace after being created. However, God still loved us enough to send a helper, the Holy Spirit, to guide us to reconnect with Him.
    • The Book of Proverbs reminds us not to rely on the understanding of man. Instead, we should trust in the Lord; He will direct our path.

[31:12] “Chapter two of Proverbs talks about the value of wisdom. In chapter three, verse five, ‘trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, He shall direct your paths.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Do not think that you’re wise; it is the wisdom of God we need, not that of man.

[32:21] How to Reconnect with the Holy Spirit
    • There will be times when you feel connected and disconnected from the Holy Spirit.
    • It’s hard to find a connection to the wisdom of God when we’re too busy and stressed.

[34:03] “When we have a lot of stress, it's very difficult to think clearly, it's very difficult to be connected, it's very difficult to hear that voice of the Holy Spirit and to get wisdom from our Creator. We need to seek and have study time.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Get plenty of rest and adequate sleep. Discernment and decision-making are difficult when we're tired.

    [34:34] Three Things to Remember
    • We need to develop humility. Learn to admit that we don’t know everything.

[39:05] “There's not any one person that has access and has the capacity to hold all the wisdom that exists that comes from our Creator.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • While we gather information, we need to be careful about information vacuums.
    • The internet and social media will give you things you want to hear, leading to confirmation bias.
    • Be curious and ask questions. We need to ask questions to understand things like the Bible better.
    • God created us to interact with others and learn about their specific area of wisdom and knowledge.

    Episode Highlights[02:21] Meet Shawn
    • Shawn is the founder of Accelerators Organization, where they mentor startups doing a million dollars in annual revenues.
    • He’s also an avid wine collector and drinker.

    [04:45] The Power of Naivete
    • Most people relate "success" with "financial success." Business success is one thing, but success differs per person.
    • Shane had various incredible experiences because of his persistence in new ventures, despite not knowing what could happen.
    • His parents never discouraged him, even though they opposed his ideas.
    • Naivete is powerful — and there are several positive aspects to it.
    • We are all naive.

[07:04] "We're all naive. There's always something that we haven't done, something we haven't experienced — and we're naive to that. Are we going to be controlled by our fear so that we don't even see what it's about? Or, are we going to be optimistic?" - Click Here to Tweet This[10:25] The Goal Mindset
    • Shawn found that most startup entrepreneurs don't have defined goals nor do they have an idea of what business success is.
    • Success can be a moving target because we’re constantly evolving.
    • To help people establish their definition of success, he developed the "goal mindset."
    • The seven areas of goal mindset are — spiritual life, family, romantic relationship, friendships, health and fitness, career and money, and philanthropy.
    • Feeling successful in all areas of your life is the key.

    [14:09] Intentionality and Luck
    • He loves living his life with intent.
    • Sometimes, he might take his time working toward his objectives. But once he has his eyes set on a goal, nothing will stop him from reaching it.
    • Most entrepreneurs avoid the word "luck", but fortunate incidents led Shawn to greater opportunities.
    • His veteran father taught him proper discipline and work ethic.
    • You can be happy while striving toward your goals.

[17:13] “Even though you have goals that you’re working towards, you can still be happy today.” - Click Here to Tweet This[19:52] Shawn’s Decade of Desperation
    • He lived ten years in the lowest of the lows.
    • His list of unfortunate events includes bankruptcy, bad credit, a near foreclosure of his home, and loaning money from family.
    • After failing another business, his relationship with his brother went south.
    • Even then, Shawn believed he would become successful and didn’t give up.

[24:17] Leveraging the Access to More
    • People today are better off than Shawn was in his 20's because of technology.
    • Many resources we have today were unavailable several years ago.
    • With the accessibility of technology and resources nowadays, people don’t necessarily need to struggle as much as they did.
    • Still, it's vital to know what information or pain points you need to search for and learn.

    [29:26] Breaking Free From Fear
    • People nowadays struggle with fear and a limited mindset.
    • Rejection and dismissal develop a natural sense of fear that beats naivete out of people.
    • Find a community that will understand, support, and uplift you.

[30:31] “Move to a better island. Get off of that island of negativity and limited mindsets, and people that don’t understand what you’re going through and what you want out of life, and go join a community. Get on an island of people that do.” - Click Here to Tweet This[33:11] The Boy Band Story
    • He joined a choir while in high school in his hometown, Alaska.
    • Their swing choir flew to Southern California for a national competition and encountered a nonprofit company that held auditions to join their performance group.
    • Deciding he wanted to become a rock star, he moved to Southern California and started doing auditions in Hollywood.
    • He passed an audition for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
    • They recorded an album, toured with the circus, and appeared on MTV.

    [41:01] About Ask A Millionaire
    • After his boy band stint, he thought it was time to be rich and decided to become a business owner.
    • He created Ask A Millionaire to relay business mentorship.
    • Everybody has a unique story, so he gets to know his mentees to offer advice respective to their needs.

[44:30] “The advice that they need. The answer to the question that they need to answer — that’s the best advice that I could give somebody.” - Click Here to Tweet This[45:35] What to Expect When Asking a Millionaire
    • At first, he was enamored with Instagram and started a channel on Periscope for live streaming.
    • Eventually, he came up with the power of naivete and the slogan, “Most won’t. I will.”
    • From there, he decided to start Accelerators Organization after noticing that there weren’t a lot of organizations for startup entrepreneurs.
    • He usually publishes on Instagram to boost engagement and interact with his audience. However, Accelerators Organization is strictly for entrepreneurs.

    [52:51] Shawn’s Ideal Audience
    • The age group that engages with him the most is the 28 to 45-year-olds.
    • Regardless of his demographics, he welcomes everyone needing help to reach a million dollars’ worth of revenue.

[55:04] “The zero to a million is all about mindset and helping them just understand that everything they’re going through, everybody who’s built a business has gone through it.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Sometimes, he needs to shake people up to make them think differently. To find business success, we need to break free from limiting mindsets and beliefs.
    • Having struggles is not unique.

    [56:32] Some Mindset Tips
    • Find someone to learn from.
    • Connecting with people will benefit you more than books and resources.
    • You don’t need to do everything alone.
    • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

    [01:01:09] Final Question
    • Shawn is a seeker because he always seeks what inspires him and new experiences to find out where he’s going.
    • As a Gemini, he’s both a seeker and a goer.

We strive to build good and loving relationships in order to feel comfort in the company of others. However, we must realize that genuine success and happiness can only be obtained from a definite source— God’s love for us.

Episode Highlights[03:09] People’s First Impressions Of Justin
    • Growing up in a culturally Catholic area in New England, people didn’t know what becoming a pastor meant. Many are surprised upon finding out that Justin is married with children.
    • When he’s traveling outside of New England, Justin encounters unique conversations with people trying to prove their faith to him.
    • Some people do not favor Justin being a pastor due to their previous experience with the church.
    • It disarms some people when he agrees with them.

[06:24] Difference between being a Pastor and a Shepherd
    • In the Bible, these two words are used interchangeably to describe a leader in the church in a governmental way.
    • Shepherding or pastoring means guiding someone along their spiritual journey towards Jesus.
    • Being a pastor means living out your convictions to people; from your flaws to your successes.
    • As a pastor, Justin recognizes that living out his most honest version of himself disarms and helps people. The journey of God’s Grace is transformative.

[10:30] Vox Church and its Origin
    • New England is historically known as the least churched region in the United States over the last 75 years.
    • The Vox Church’s name comes from John 5:25. Despite our disconnection from God, we can hear His voice to our inner selves and we come alive.

[12:20] "The spiritually dead, every one of us that has an innate desire for God, but a disconnection from him because of our brokenness, because of our sinfulness, now with God’s Grace can be reborn, we can hear His voice, we can experience that mystery of regeneration." - Click Here to Tweet This
    • The Vox Church’s prayer for the past 10 years is to transform New England into the most spiritually vibrant place on Earth.
    • The community started small in New Haven, and then expanded to nine different locations across New England and Connecticut, Massachusetts.
    • The intentional community paradigm is following Jesus’ mission — radically loving and living their most honest and imperfect life together.

[15:22] Challenges of a Growing Church
    • Justin spent eight years in a traveling ministry before he planted the Vox church.
    • One of the most critical things they did at the start is knowing who they were and what they stood for. The values they adhere to consist of: the centrality of Jesus in the Gospel, intentional community, and the healthy heart of their mission.
    • They embodied and practiced these values, and the same culture replicated among their church.

[18:50] "This is something we embodied, practiced, again not perfect, but even in our imperfection, we were exposed, we were honest with our leaders, and with our team, And that culture, because it had language, and it had representation, the culture replicated." - Click Here to Tweet This[20:53] What keeps Justin Grounded
    • There are two sides to the issue: the side of the heart and the side of the practical guardrails.
    • One of the most important pieces of advice he got from a fellow pastor is that when the leader sees themselves as a celebrity, it is the beginning of the end.

[23:57] "The church doesn’t advance from success to success, the church advances from sacrifice to sacrifice. If you want to be part of this movement, it’s going to mean self-death, it’s going to mean coming low so that God can bring you high." - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Justin admits he doesn’t resolve the issue perfectly, but he resolves it by asking himself what he can pull apart from the false narrative of having superiority over others.
    • We must always surround ourselves with people who will speak the truth. Having a board of directors to hold him accountable helps Justin grow in his leadership.
    • Justin talks about the importance of being intentional with the condition of our heart to help ourselves stay grounded.

    [30:24] Serving Amid a Pandemic
    • Justin considers the pandemic the great revealer — enabling everyone to see what was on the inside.

[34:41] "I do think that in every great tragedy, there is a divine opportunity … God often uses these catalytic tragedies to draw people back to heaven." - Click Here to Tweet This
    • When the pandemic hit, the church had to go into a new mode of trying to serve people, but it was not without challenges.
    • Despite their attendance falling apart due to the pandemic, they continued to serve. The church family in their hearts grew stronger because of it.

[35:43] Tips of Encouragement For Struggling Leaders
    • The biggest gift you can give to your organization is a healthy soul.
    • Having centeredness in health internally reflects what you can do to help externally.
    • Accepting our limitations can help us thrive within the sphere of influence and grace we have been given.
    • Stop overextending beyond what you are given and being something you are not.

[39:17] Bury your Ordinary: Why and When It was Written
    • Comfort is an internal reality and then an external state. Bury Your Ordinary challenges its readers to define what comfort means to them.
    • The book was written over 20 years while answering the question of what true comfort is — which ultimately, is Jesus.
    • The book’s premise is how you can develop habits that can point your heart to knowing Jesus more.
    • Doing these habits out of love and not obligation leads to genuine happiness and fulfillment.

    [42:50] The Writing Process
    • Justine considers himself a writer on a journey.
    • He has written books and songs in the past, and has noticed that since he now knows the voice of his book, his writing process has sped up.
    • His book was the product of asking himself the question, “What does it take to be a disciple of Jesus?”
    • Writing a book doesn’t have to be painful. Justin shares that writing his book was grace and his next book, currently in the editing process, was easier.

[47:00] Quiet Time of Stillness and the Aspect of Sabbath
    • If you want to seek intentional direction, it’s necessary to take time and be still. The first habit is dedicating the first hour of your day to being alone and seeking God.
    • Set a day for Sabbath: Pause your normal day to take time resting and worshiping God.
    • Justin practiced and prioritized his habits for 15 years before he became a pastor.

    [53:42] Justin’s Final Thoughts
    • Any problem you are facing can be traced back to an inaccurate view of God. An inaccurate view of God leads to an inaccurate view of self.
    • Accept your flaws and broken parts and realize that God cares for you and knows you.
    • God’s love is an anchor for your soul. Death and chaos will approach you, but with His love, you can withstand anything.

[56:45] "You can stand perfect before God forever simply by trusting in Christ." - Click Here to Tweet This[59:03] Seek, Go, Create
    • Across America, we are in a seek moment. It is the moment to seek the Holy Spirit for His power and a moment to seek God and start our spiritual awakening.

    • Guideposts was founded by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. It is a space for people to tell stories of faith in their daily lives.
    • Those in the media industry initially thought no one would want to hear stories from ordinary people.
    • They continue to be America’s storytellers for their audience today — 76 years later.

    [06:01] Guideposts Today
    • This summer, Guideposts relaunched with more pages and new features.
    • Though many say that print is dead, they continue to publish Guideposts as well as several other magazines.
    • From 10 times a year, they now only publish 6 times a year. This has enabled them to continue to create amazing content.

    [09:43] The Impact of Storytelling
    • Their staff goes through thousands of stories yearly.
    • Some people prefer to work together with the editors to help them articulate their stories in the best way.
    • The people who share their stories through Guideposts want their experiences to help others.
    • The majority of their content is from ordinary people from all over the world.
    • As spiritual people, they want to spread hope and inspiration to guide them through their troubles.

[12:38] “I think we, as spiritual people, need to infuse the world with hope and inspiration to counteract the troubles that people have. Guideposts people have troubles and they use their faith to work themselves through their troubles.” - Click Here to Tweet This[13:24] Edward’s Journey
    • He was introduced to the magazine when he was struggling with depression and other issues.
    • He was called for an interview and ended up working with Guideposts. There, he found himself inspired and nurtured spiritually.
    • With the help of his work and the community, Edward felt like he found his place in the world.

[18:27] “I thought God's striking a bargain with me, which is, I will help you get sober, but you have to do this work in exchange. And I thought that’s a pretty good deal. Because it was enriching me and I was feeling optimistic and positive. I had a place in the world.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Compared to other publishing companies, Guideposts had a positive environment. Edward, along with others, did meaningful work.
    • Listen to the episode to hear more about how Edward rose from his lowest point with the help of Guideposts.

    [20:46] Guideposts’ Mission
    • Guideposts is a non-profit, mission-based publication that connects deeply with its audience.
    • The company’s mission encourages its people to stay and love what they are doing.
    • Contributing to the mission gives a big impact on the audience. They want their actions to inspire spiritual growth through Guideposts.

[24:06] Edward’s Memorable Moments With Guideposts
    • Edward recalls a time when a reader sent him a letter about her father’s life. This was later on shared through Guideposts.
    • This memory made Edward truly realize how his work can make an impact on the audience.
    • On the other hand, the transition from print to digital media became a challenge for their growth as a company.
    • The team is now looking for ways to reach people digitally and still bring the same impact as their print publications.

    [29:39] Changing For the Better
    • Continue to do what you’re good at, but always be ready to do it in different ways.

[30:01] “I've always thought that the way we've always done things, versus, we have to do things differently as the two sides of the same coin. Because you know what you're good at, and you cannot forget what you're good at.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Short-term goals motivate people. Long-term goals motivate the changes that must be made.
    • Despite the success of printed products, the reality is that a transition is needed for the company’s survival and growth.
    • Decisions regarding changes must involve everyone in the company. Guideposts seniors include the other teams in decision-making and take into account employee feedback.
    • A collaborative approach to company changes encourages its people to accept it.

[32:47] “When you can get people involved in the process of change, they're much less likely to cling to the way that they used to do things. They’ll feel like they're a part of what they're being asked to do.” - Click Here to Tweet This[34:02] From Print to Digital
    • Guideposts’ print publication had a stable audience demographic.
    • Digitalization allowed them to reach a wide variety of different audiences.
    • There were difficulties in finding and marketing to their audience for different content.
    • On the upside, going digital has its benefits.
    • Targeting specific demographics is an opportunity to create content for them specifically.

    [40:18] Overcoming Tragedies
    • During the 9-11 attack, Edward’s editorial assistant was part of the emergency response team.
    • The tragic event had a significant impact on Guideposts. They have a collection of stories of that day.
    • These kinds of stories still inspire us to survive and push through.
    • Guideposts allow people to share stories that involve tragedies and overcoming them.

[44:28] “One of the things about Guideposts stories we always ask is, how does the narrative change the person, how do they change? And how, in the course of that story, and the issues, the problems they face, how did overcoming those problems change them for the better?” - Click Here to Tweet This[46:17] Alzheimer’s: A Hopeless Situation?
    • Edward is currently working on a book about Alzheimer’s and its impact on society.
    • The book focuses on his family’s journey through the challenges of the disease.
    • He is currently going through predicted testing for signs of Alzheimer's in himself.
    • Spiritually, people worry about forgetting the presence of God in their lives. Edward believes that Alzheimer’s cannot erode your relationship with God.
    • He hopes to discover how faith can get them through hopeless situations.

    [50:58] Guideposts For You
    • For many people, Guideposts has come into their lives exactly when they needed it.
    • People enjoy coming back to the magazine producing a high renewal rate of 75% on subscriptions.
    • Edward welcomes people to connect with him with their own experiences with Alzheimer’s.

    [53:31] Seeking in Creating
    • Edward resonates with creating.
    • You can seek through creating. Edward often finds discoveries as he writes.

    • No one had a greater mission than Jesus Christ. He died on the cross so that we can rebuild our relationship with God.
    • Jesus never rushed, despite having barely three years to establish his ministry.

[13:00] “If Jesus Christ never felt stressed or anxious about the most important assignment that anyone has ever had on this earth, then why would we be about whatever we think our purpose and our assignment is?” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • We should not rush to fulfill our life’s mission.

    [13:39] Significance of Learning Peace
    • Learning about peace helps us grasp the meaning of love and faith.
    • The Lord demonstrated love and faith by living a peaceful life.

[16:03] “I don't believe that hustle, fatigue, exhaustion, stress, and anxiety is how we should be living. I believe that those are devices of the enemy and not of God and that we shouldn't be doing that.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Finding peace amid all the distractions in our everyday lives is difficult.
    • We don’t deserve a stressful and anxious life.

[17:06] “By checking the boxes and going to church or working in the parking lot or working in the ministry…there is nothing scriptural about that. And nothing about what we're talking about here says that the more you do, then the more you're going to be rewarded.” - Click Here to Tweet This[17:45] Living in the State of Rest

[32:54] “Peace exists when love and faith dominate one’s soul. That allows an individual to abide in a place of rest. Rest occurs when there is no conflict between the spirit, the soul, and the body. Peace is not a place or an event, nor is it taken or earned.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    Episode Highlights[01:55] Meeting Jimmy
    • Jimmy’s job doesn’t have a clear-cut definition.
    • He can be referred to as an expert witness, consultant, author, lecturer, podcaster, and being in Bitcoin but none of these capture what he really does.
    • He does many things in Bitcoin — from coding to public speaking.
    • He wears his hat because he loves the Wild West era when people were heading west to make a life for themselves which reminds him of the situation in Bitcoin.

[09:15] What is a Christian Libertarian?
    • The term “Christian libertarian” is relatively a political label.
    • Jimmy believes that freedom upholds the heart of the biblical scriptures because God gives us the liberty to choose.
    • Faith is not forced but a choice.
    • People sometimes think they’re free but they’re being enslaved to something else.

[10:03] “That’s the tragedy of human choices that oftentimes people choose not to follow God. That’s something that I feel very passionate about is that a lot of people think that they’re being free when really, they’re being enslaved to something else.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Libertarianism refers to securing individual freedom and the God-given rights that the government shouldn’t deprive its citizens of.

    [12:16] Can People Handle Responsibility?
    • For the most part, Jimmy believes people can’t handle responsibility and that’s why we fall to sin and seek redemption from Christ.
    • Freedom without God ends up in sin.
    • Forcing people isn’t genuine and only leads to compliance or fear of repercussions.
    • Freedom comes with responsibility, and we can only acknowledge this if we turn to God.
    • Reformation and transformation should emanate from our core through spirituality.

[16:25] What’s Wrong in Our Current Monetary System?
    • In the book The Maker Versus the Takers, Jerry Bowyer analyzes Jesus’ encounters with the rich and the poor in the Bible.
    • The current monetary system is a cesspool of theft, corruption, and cronyism.
    • Listen to the full episode to hear Jimmy break down the issue of centralization in printing money in the current monetary system!
    • While the science of economics studies the “seen” effects of loans in creating money, we should scrutinize the “unseen” effects as well.
    • Using the dollar as a store of value hurts the poorest and most vulnerable people around the world through inflation. The current monetary system benefits few and hurts many.

[25:42] “Your stimmy checks, all your PPP loans, everything that you are benefiting from through government largess — it ultimately hurts people and it’s usually people that can’t fight back.” - Click Here to Tweet This[27:46] Getting People to Care
    • People tend to care when it’s already too late.
    • While almost every revolution in history can be traced back to high taxes, inflation is a form of tax that’s quite tricky.
    • The mechanics of hyperinflation and inflation exacerbate the current monetary system — tune in to find out how the situation has changed since Jesus’ time!
    • But currently, we have a decentralized form of money that promotes sovereignty over your finances.

[33:22] Opting Out of the System
    • It’s possible to opt out of the current monetary system by not using the money — which is often used to control people.

[35:20] “Being able to opt out is an important feature, not just for this ability to not be subject to the government, but because it gives you personal freedom, it means that you can use the money in a way you find moral and just...” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • In the hands of the wrong person, money could be used for evil deeds.
    • Putting someone else in authority of your money makes you their servant.
    • When human rights organizations go against a government, the government retaliates by shutting down their bank accounts, making them impotent.
    • Being able to opt out of financial coercion means breaking free from the shackles of the government and gaining personal freedom.

    [40:13] On Fiat Money
    • Fiat is Latin for “let there be” and invokes an act of creation.
    • Money used to be backed by gold but now it’s backed by nothing.
    • Interested to find out how World War I and II changed the world of money? Listen to the full episode to learn about the effects of war on fiat money.
    • Ultimately, fiat money is money created out of nothing that allows control over people.

    [48:01] Bitcoin’s Emergence and Impact
    • Technically, since God gave us everything, one could say God gave us Bitcoin.
    • Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin, was part of Cypherpunk — a mailing list that goes back to 1992 consisting of people vouching for financial privacy as a right.
    • There were many predecessors to Bitcoin that Satoshi combined to decentralize money.
    • Bitcoin was introduced in 2009 as a response to the authoritarian fiat control.

    [54:07] Jimmy’s Entry to Bitcoin
    • Jimmy pursued Bitcoin in 2011.
    • He had been a programmer all his life and came across an article about Bitcoin.
    • Reading it, he found out Bitcoin has reached dollar parity which is equivalent to a dollar.
    • That set him off on his Bitcoin journey and wrote his first book called Programming Bitcoin.

    [58:59] Setting Yourself Free
    • The first thing we must do to free ourselves from fiat control is get out of debt.
    • People must wrestle with the spiritual aspect of monetary debt to steer away from the enslavement of money.
    • “Sowing and reaping” means you can save yourself from the unjust systems; Bitcoin is the perfect way to do that.
    • Being enslaved to debt kills your passion and corrupts your soul and getting rid of it entails cutting back on your lifestyle. Think of it as purification.

[59:17] “Most of us live lives where we are serving our debt and not serving God.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • Tune in to the full episode to find out about fiat mentality and how Bitcoin breaks that by giving people the ability to save; thus, offering liberty!

[01:08:49] 3 Ways to Buy Bitcoin
    • Download Cash App on your phone, click the Bitcoin symbol at the bottom, and enter your debit card to buy Bitcoin.
    • Go to River Financial’s website and enter your bank information.
    • Go on Bitcoin.

    [01:12:11] Predicting the Future
    • The incentives are clear in a fiat monetary system and the government plays to those.
    • More money printing and bond yields dropping need to happen to keep the financial sector afloat and the upper class wealthy.
    • Jimmy suspects money printing will continue and there will be continuous asset inflation, specifically stocks in real estate, but Bitcoin will remain with a fixed supply limit.

    [01:16:31] The Future of Bitcoin
    • Bitcoin is already a big thing and is being used in the industry to denominate everything.
    • Jimmy does only a few investments because the returns on Bitcoin are significantly higher and they must be worthwhile for him.
    • Listen to the full episode to learn more about how Bitcoin will pop the economic bubble!

    [01:22:10] Seek, Go, or Create?
    • Jimmy chose “create” because there’s been too little of it in the last hundred years.
    • “Create” shows how we are created in God’s image and likeness and we also have that ability to form ideas and make things.
    • At the heart of Christian living is providing goods and services to others for a fair price.

[01:24:06] “If you can provide something that is fair to the market, I believe that you are loving others as you would have them love you.” - Click Here to Tweet This
    • We should create something for others to use that contributes to His creations.
