Eric Wargo, author of “Time Loops” and “Precognitive Dreamwork & the Long Self,” returns to Self Portraits As Other People to talk about his new book “From Nowhere: Artists, Writers, and the Precognitive Imagination.” We navigate the nebulous c-word and the various facets of its counterpart The Unconscious, the role the body plays in precognitive phenomena, themes of archetypal inversion, the need to strip away the time travel tropes that keep us from clear exploration, the implications of time travel trauma, and more. For those unfamiliar with Wargo’s work I recommend first checking out his previous appearance in ep 16: The Preciousness of The Prescient Present, for an entry level to his ideas.

“My guest is the house that hosts me and I am the ghost that haunts it.”
This bi-coastal episode is a meditation on the meaning of home as a locational vibration, from the nomadic vantage point of a perpetual “stranger passing through town.”
The 1st half examines the subconscious sonic textures through which places speak to us. I recorded this segment while going through a deep emotional process, in Los Angeles, shortly after finishing my intense anti-leishmanial medicine cycle, and before leaving for New York.
After a sonic interlude the 2nd half takes place in the insomniac city, where I quantum leap from sublet to sublet, and these temporary home-bodies I borrow from strangers—spaces “literally haunted by the absence of their presence”—become Self Portraits As Other People.
In addition to my own compositions the episode features original musical contributions by Jeff Cravath and Brian Aspell.

In this improvised walk-and-talk monoloque I reflect on (and atone for) the time I met Werner Herzog at the premiere of lan Cheney’s documentary film “Arc of Oblivion.”
I use this anecdote as a jump off point to share thoughts about documentation, impersonation, Spiritualism as Proto-feminism, my time working as a photo double for the Riggs character in the Lethal Weapon TV show, the relative duration of objective vs subjective time, the parasocial reality of meeting celebrities, and the redemptive arc of self-esteem-punking oneself in order to give in to the humbling & the bumbling.

(Headphones recommended for optimal immersion in and enjoyment of the show's intro and outro )
Jesse Jacobs is an imaginative comic book writer and illustrator from Canada. His books include Crawl Space, Safari Honeymoon, By This Shall You Know Him, and New Pets. His compelling, cartoon worlds and their inhabitants call to mind the pataphysical taxonomies of works like the Codex Seraphinianus, Hieronymous Bosch, Hayao Myazaki, and Adventure Time.
His work often contains ecological elements that deal with characters moving through and adapting to places that are alive, and the mysterious forces (big and small) that lord over them.
We explore the trippy tropes of place-as-character, nature’s boundless beauty and dangers, and the sometimes-necessity of boarding-up-a-portal.
Comparing notes on the creative process, psychedelic influences, and sharing recommendations of books, music, and films, we revel in a mutual admiration of each other’s work.
I created audio play adaptations of scenes from his books Crawl Space and Safari Honeymoon for the intro and outro of the episode, musically assisted by Bear Glass and the voice talents of Taylor Stillwell and Kat Lakey. You'll soon be able to find these, as well as extended shownotes, on my IG, TikTok, YouTube, and Patreon (linked below) so follow along!

I attended Sophia’s psychedelic psundsay psermon recently, on an actual Sunday in an actual church, in Asheville, NC. She may be an anthropologist, but she is no anthro-apologist, for this talk regarded “inter-species dialogues & plant consciousness.”
& so we met up later that week to talk tardigrades, Jericho roses & the death & resurrection of words. To ponder prayer, spin recursive meme-o-spheres, encounter scary English angels in the polyglot-o-sphere & stand in “Uhhh” before the “awefullsome” in the realm of the sphere-its.
We exchanged notes about what she calls “stacked spirit science” & we honored the ANTcestors with fancy-antsy words like “stigmergy” & “formication”.
Even though all things that look/sound similar are connected, we managed to tell Huni Kuin from Loony Toons & Shipibo-Conibo from Evil-Knievel.
We traced the riverine roots of the milk-mustached Drunk Monkey People’s circuitous designs back to the anaconda choirs of their creation myth (scales for days). We sat, as if in ceremony, w the riddle of sickness & the serpent’s place in amazonian&Asclepius’ lore. Snake oil or serpent medicine?
We weighed the value of dream-tending vs. analysis & as we wondered how to concoct a cure for loneliness I remembered the psycho-magical Dream Theatre I used to facilitate, where we would often transcend Joseph Conrad’s maxim “we live as we dream—alone.”
&just as Sophia & I considered questions that refuse to be answered & answers that refuse to be questioned, our pod-cast spell was interrupted by a phone-call from our friend comedian Shane Mauss.
Sophia co-wrote the book When Plants Dream w Daniel Pinchbeck & has a bouncing baby blog on substack called NUMA.

This, the shortest solo pod to date, relays the frenetically inspiring energy of New York City, as a storied palimpsest of ever evolving Lore. I'm gonna leave it at that and let the piece speak for itself.

I've been transitioning. First from my humble jungle abode to my father's neurodegerative memory palace in Miami, & now I've just landed in the urban jungle of NYC for my art show & performance on August 13th. I used to spend a lot of time here pre-911, was gonna move here even & am sure to recover memories long forgotten, parts of myself I stored for future visitation. That's the theme of this short ep: Anemnesis - the remembering of things from a supposed previous existence.
I recite a chapter from my unfinished manuscript of Aya writings titled VR: Vegetal Reality, laid atop a dynamic ambient bedding of sound sculpted by Soularflair w/ field-recorded icaros sung in ceremony by the Shipibo shaman Cesar "Soimetza" Bardales woven into the design.
This tale deals exclusively w/ the passage through places that can only be recalled while alert in the alterered state. So wear your purge bucket as a space helmet & join me as I journey past Jupiter without ever leaving the atmosphere of earth.

Nathan Dufour Oglesby, PhD, aka Nathanology is a rap-educating professor of classics, performance philosopher, activist, & video artist.
Nathan & I talk about the relationship between Language and nature, while discussing the nature of inter-generational relationships w one's eco/home. We touch upon the Mayan fable of the Toh bird (aka the Nathaniel bird) & the unforeseen consequences of “knaming” things—how our efforts to familiarize ourselves w the world can in effect estrange us from its true nature.
We broach the topic of exploring intimacy w Inanimate objects & u’ll hear us refer to what A.N. Whitehead called “Intensities of experience” as well as what Tim Morton termed “dark ecology”.
We ask questions like “Should we save the world of just savor what’s left of it?” & ponder the notion of Initiating oneself beyond statistic dissociation, into the pulsing reference of life's vital essence.
We don’t offer any answers, but I think the questions do in a sense part the veil & allow for more of life’s mystery to reveal itself.

Jungle life is not without its perils, or as Werner Herzog put it, the jungle is “an unfinished country. It's still prehistorical. The only thing that is lacking is the dinosaurs here. It's like a curse weighing on an entire landscape. And whoever goes too deep into this has his share of this curse.”
Some of this curse has fallen upon me, it seems, and I am working hard to lift it.
In the Mexican jungle, deforestation unleashed Leishmania, a parasite vectored by a sandfly, and I am infected by its flesh-eating affliction Leishmaniasis. Marked by volcanic lesions on my left cheek and right hand I'm undergoing an impatient transformation (TM) while sapping insight from these unsightly sores for eye-sight. As I wait for medicine to arrive, I examine my experience (as well as this Herzogian notion of the “unfinished country”) through shamanic, ecological, and pragmatic lenses.
The horror! The Horror! The… WONDER HORROR…
Seated at the lotus feet of my dis-ease, I embrace it as my teacher. In classic SPAOP-fashion, I explore themes of inter-species diplomacy and delve into the delicate balance between a parasite and a symbiot. I also examine the intersections of psychedelic ecology and ecodelic psychology, as well as the thin line between parasitology and parapsychology, while contemplating the merits of redemption for both the parasite and myself.
