    –The Sound of Silence–

CJ and Jimmy are joined by Josh Dunham to talk about the anime film adaptation of A Silent Voice. They discuss what they love about the film and the few nitpicks they had as well. Patreon Questions this week continue the conversation about the New York Times Article from the previous episode and what we’d like to see Naoko Yamada, the director of the film, tackle next.

    -Excerpt-

CJ – That first time he goes after her hearing aids and she starts bleeding from her ears.

    Jimmy – Yeah?
CJ – That scene is gut wrenching.
Jimmy – There’s a lot of gut wrenching in this film.
CJ – There’s a lot of heavily intense, emotional scenes and how they depict them in this film is fantastic. Cause its not like Fist of the North Star where he rips out the hearing aid and a bucket of blood just starts gushing from out of her ear.
    Josh – Wow…
    Jimmy – Laughter
    CJ – It’s really subtle.
Jimmy – Never thought about that before.

  • Episode 24 – Talking with Digibro Part 2

    “You’ve heard about Shinbo’s porn, right? “

    ~ Digibro

Part 2 of Digibro’s interview on Senpai Coast to Coast! The conversation continues with talk of Akiyuki Shinbo, and the interview that was recently translated on Le Portrait de Petit Cossette. We wander into the topic of anime studios and if their identity defines the shows they work on (or if they have any identity at all). Twitter banter hold that there may soon be a followup podcast on this very topic, so make sure you subscribe for future installments!

  • Episode 23 – Women in Gundam

“For women in particular, I have the actual feeling of finally becoming able to write female characters. “

    ~ Yoshiyuki Tomino

Too often, in a series like Gundam, amidst titans like Amuro Ray, Char Azanable, and Kamille Bidan, the better half of the cast is neglected or forgotten. Despite being some of the more interesting characters, the women of Gundam don’t seem to get the same treatment as their male counterparts. Why is that? I asked Otaku journalist Lauren Orsini for the answers!

  • Episode 22 – Sakuga and Crackers

“I can’t stand modern movies. The images are too weird and eccentric for me. “

    ~ Hayao Miyazaki

Chances are you’ve seen the above cut from Naruto. In fact, I’d be more surprised if you hadn’t. But do you know the name of the animator behind that cut? Do you know what other shows that animator may have worked on? Of course you don’t have to know the who in order to enjoy what the animator intended you as the viewer to enjoy…

    – but in my mind, it’s the best kind of ‘thank you’.

    -The Storytelling Value of Visuals-

    Kraker

Pronounced member of the sakuga community (and I say that as if it stands apart from anime fandom) writer for the Sakuga Blog, Kraker is a walking wealth of knowledge in terms of who drew what. Soft yet well spoken (as many a Brit tends to be), I learned a whole lot in the short time I had talking with him.

Oh, and as promised here’s the opening theme of Might Gaine.

-What I talk about when I talk about Anime-

    Doctor

Doctor is founder and master editor of the SSAA ‘Ass Backwards’ Anime Podcast. He and I have been doing projects together since the get-go. To quote a line from his website, ‘He was doing it before it was cool’. Doctor is a man of many talents, one of them being the Super Saiyan levels of editing he is capable of editing that mortal men and sound gods envy (I among them). Ask Doc about any show, he’s seen it – twice actually.

I think it’s important to think about what you’re watching. Thought is the gateway to empathy, and empathy the gateway to understanding. Good art causes you to reflect on your emotions, your likes and biases, and that inflection causes the introspective subject to grow. That is not to say a show cannot be watch for fun, and Doctor and I hash that out this episode. How far is too far? When does it stop becoming fun?
