  • RS $113 - Mac Gollehon is Notorious | David Bowie | Duran Duran | Madonna
I dig Mac Gollehon so much. He's back for a second show in less than a year, simply because he has such interesting stories to tell. Obviously, when you have 3000+ recording credits, chances are you've seen some crazy stuff. When you hear the new album, , you know that crazy stuff burrows deep into your artistic psyche.

During our conversation, we did have a few cell phone drop outs, so this interview is heavily edited, but we did our best and trust me.... it's a doozy. Mac makes an incredible guest.

Without further ado, this is my chat with my buddy, Mac Gollehon, the notorious brass master, on Rockstar Superhero.

    Time Codes:

1:40 Mac is the coolest thing ever
3:40 Musicians are an odd group of people

  • Walloping and Hammering with Tim Tymo | TYMO
There's only so much I can say about my conversation with thrash legend ,Tim Tymo.

I did get quite a bit out of him today, but I wish I could just sit down with him for a day or two and pick his brain. Tim knows so much about music. He's insanely passionate and filled with joy over the silliest things, and he's a genuinely lovable guy. What a mensch.

Tim is currently promoting the new album 'The Art of a Maniac,' and it sounds like the title suggests. It's raw, unfiltered, pinpoint accurate, thrashy and trashy and utterly awesome in its purview. It's a bonkers record and one that you need to let wash over you like toxic sludge, because that's the only way you're going to get the point.

This is my excitable interview with the man himself. This is Tim Tymo on Rockstar Superhero.

    Time Codes:

2:00 Being a huge fan when you just discovered the band
    5:00 Metal fans never leave
8:45 The album covers your parents hated
    11:30 Marilyn Manson was Satan
15:00 Drop tuning is all you need
    19:00 Influences are obvious
22:30 Thrash is a weird genre
26:00 The era of the guitar hero
31:00 The Art of a Maniac
35:00 Marty Friedman is a Japanese man

  • Beware the Majesty and Power | YAWN
Today's show comes with a word of warning. Sure, I'll be catching up with my old friends from Norway's stellar progressive jazz metal outfit, YAWN but we'll also be discussing immensely technical music terminology pretty much the entire time.

In other words, if you like to hear about guitar reamping and production techniques, today's show was made for you. Especially when you toss in the inevitable weird reference that this interviewer is known for. Fortunately, for all involved, it was old hat. For you, the listener, I apologize on behalf of everyone.

This is our weirdly offbeat conversation about the creation of the stunning new album, Materialism, and another funny talk with one of the most unique bands in the world. This is YAWN, on Rockstar Superhero.

    Time Codes:

    2:25 The new album, Materialism
5:00 Positive energy from the work flow
    9:40 Kansas, Rush, and Styx
13:00 Exploring more melody and new directions
    17:00 Balkan wedding music
20:50 Unrelated tempos and click tracks
24:30 Sharing the program for the masses
26:45 The stress on the drummer
31:00 Nobody was doing this years ago
    36:00 Music education and programming
40:00 Dividing up the work to get the most from the band
45:00 Materialism tells a musical story
    49:00 Torfinn can't produce
53:00 The story behind most time consuming aspects
58:00 Playing difficult music and the message behind it

  • RS #104 - Controlling the Climate with Kirk Windstein | Crowbar
Kirk Windstein is a legend in the heavy music business. He founded Crowbar, the monstrous sludge metal factory way back in 1990. I've been a fan since the beginning, so having a chance to connect with Kirk was a dream come true.

The new album, Zero and Below, drops on March 4th and it's fully formed. Recorded 2 years ago, the pandemic has kept its power from us, but no more. The music will bring a smile to your face as that classic sound pours into your eardrums and soul. It's great stuff.

Crowbar tours with Sepultura, beginning in March as well, so you can get your Crowbar fix and watch another legendary band tear up the stage. It's an amazing bill and one I hope to see.

All said, it's time to rumble. This is Kirk Windstein, the bearded myth and legend from Louisiana's Crowbar, on Rockstar Superhero.

    Time Codes:

1:30 Heavy on the promo trail
3:00 The new album finally drops
5:00 Going back to square one

  • The Immense Burden of Feeling with Will Benoit | SOM
Will Benoit has a voice and style that fits squarely into the uniquely complex post metal, alternative dream/doom band, SOM.

SOM will be releasing the new album, The Shape of Everything in a few days, and will be out by the time you hear this interview. It's massive in scope, sound, and vision. It's a singular gargantuan album and it's my great hope that it won't get lost in the myriad of musical releases that happen this time of year. It's already on my Album of the year list, and I don't see how it can be bested. It's just that good.

Will was kind enough to give me a some time in the middle of his press run for the new album release, so I honor his attention to this experience and I'm deeply honored. His voice is impeccable and if I didn't make it obvious, the music could be the best thing ever.

This is my conversation with the man himself, vocalist Will Benoit, of the atmospheric SOM, on Rockstar Superhero.

    Time Codes:

2:20 Being passionate and annoying about the new album
3:20 What does it feel like to create amazing material

15:00 The melody and the heavy

21:00 Relating to true human emotion
24:00 The open heart approach of experience
27:00 Stairway to Heaven and the beautiful accidents

  • RS LIVE - Inoculated from Joy® - A Mental Health Discussion #1
This is a seriously big deal.

Discussing mental health and the stigma surrounding it is quite important, don't you think? How can we overcome? How can we deal? What is it like from the musician's perspective? What have we seen around us? Why are there so many suicides? Why are so many people quitting on life?

Light overcomes darkness. Knowledge overcomes ignorance. Let's talk about this and let's make sure we do it again, okay?

  • The Catalyst and the Collaborator with Esjay Jones | We Are Pigs
Esjay Jones came to the United States, and specifically to Los Angeles, in pursuit of a dream. This dream wasn't apparent, but she knew in her gut that a destiny waited for her. Was it fame? Was it some other sort of perceived importance? Who knew?

Today, Esjay is not only an influencer in the music business, but a confident connected in all things rock and roll. She has instincts that most of us wish we understood and a drive that is unrelenting. She will never stop, never cave in, and never quit on her friends, her family, or the world. • Looking for the Holy Moment | Atlas
I'll say it out loud right now. Atlas, the darkly melodic Finnish powerhouse, is one of THE best bands in the world. Their new album, UKKO, has an un-mistakeable sound and an intense vision that must be experienced to believe. It's a revelation and one I cannot shake.

I had a chance to talk to both Tuomas and Patrik for roughly an hour, and it was a most personal affair. The guys shared the truth behind the words and the pain behind the music and we all left better men for it.

I love these guys so much that I almost want to move my entire family to Finland, just so we can spend more time together. It was that special to me.

Now, I know I'm known for exaggeration and speaking in glassy tones about the bands and music I love, but this one WAS different. After listening to the show, I hope you feel the same way too.

There's not much else to blabber on about, so let's get to it. This is the sound of Northcore. This is ATLAS, on Rockstar Superhero

    Time Codes:

1:50 The accidental discovery of Atlas
    3:40 Traditional vs extreme metal
    6:00 Taking the best influences

  • RS #91 - Don't Call it a Comeback with Kyle Thomas | Exhorder
Man, I think I wanted to talk to Kyle Thomas from the legendary groove metal band, Exhorder more than anyone in a long time.

Kyle has been a influence in the music scene for as long as I've been listening to heavy music, and his vocal style has been ripped off for years. Some of the biggest bands ever copped his sound, but we can't complain about that.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

The band is back together again, and are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their seminal debut, Slaughter in the Vatican. They are taking the show on the road, and will be playing a venue near you in December, as well as key dates and festivals coming up in the new year.

I was able to snag Kyle for a few minutes before our connection went to pot. After 10 days, we tried again, but our connection was still rough, so we cut it short and I cobbled the audio together for this release. I apologize, but sometimes the fates don't allow, and they definitely didn't this go around.

With that, I hope you'll check out the band on tour, buy their latest release, Mourn the Southern Skies, and get into this iconic group so they jump past mythic status and into the realm of legend where they belong.

This is my conversation with the man himself, Kyle Thomas, from Exhorder, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.
