  • RS #88 - The Prodigal Son of Progressive Metal | Tom MacLean | Athemon
Tom MacLean has breathed some pretty rarified air. As the original bass player for the mega popular progressive rock band, Haken, Tom saw the band rise to heights not often attained. At the very crest, Tom made a change to his life that confused half of the music business and left Haken, seemingly within reach of everything a musician strives for.

Today on the show, we not only dig into Tom's backstory, but more importantly, we get to chat about his new musical endeavors, and specifically his amazing new band, Athemon.

The new release from the band will find it's way to your phones, laptops, and living room as soon as you decide to buy it. The music that starts the show today is a sampling and something that I believe will resonate in the minds of our future youth as a touchstone of influence. I'd make a bet on it.

This is my interview with the legendary instrumentalist and producer, Tom MacLean, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.

    51:00 Tom's early childhood
    54:10 Vai, Petrucci, and Jazz
    ------------------

    Fun Facts:
Until 2013, Tom was the original bassist in Haken and guitarist in To-Mera. He believes he’s one of a very small group of people to have opened for Dream Theater in two different bands.

The album as a whole explained by the band:

Full of dark and enigmatic atmospheres, the self-titled record is a 50-minute concept album divided into nine songs, which tells a story about self-awareness. The instrumental consists of two guitars, a bass, and drums that together form an ideal atmosphere for those who enjoy a deeper journey. Self-Titled Athemon is a creative album that seeks to forge the perfect alloy of darkness and beauty.

    Album Credits:

  • The Smell of the Color Orange with Andy Wilson-Taylor | Midgar
Midgar is a mythical city and bustling geometric metropolis found on the planet of Gaia in the Final Fantasy universe. My guest today, Andy Wilson Taylor, was greatly influenced by one particular game in the series, and from which so many musical ideas sprouted.

Andy founded Midgar in 2008 on the principles of symphonic expression, grand idealism, melodic compounds, kinetic atmosphere, and sonic synthesis. The term 'cinematic' best describes this musical amalgamation and the subsequent material that poured from his veins.

Finding himself in another country in the last few years, Andy has found peace and uses his gifts to better our world, one note at a time.

Midgar is unadultered beauty and tangled rage, professionally forged into a glorious alloy of inverted chords and passing melodies.

This is my conversation with the gracious human, Andy Wilson Taylor of Midgar, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.

  • RS #84 - The Elegance of the Scots with Doogie White | Alcatrazz
The legend of Alcatrazz goes without saying. The band has created some timeless music and sprouted a few of the most famous instrumentalists in the history of rock music. They are a tower of achievement, existing in the space few musical acts dwell.

Alcatrazz has existed, in one form or another, for 35 years, and tomorrow, the band will release their 5th album, the appropriately titled 5 or V, if you're Roman.

By the grace of God, I was given the opportunity to chat with iconic frontman, Doogie White, the face and voice of this classic transatlantic metal wonder. Doogie was all the things I crave in a conversation. He was funny, witty, clearly appreciative of his role in the band, and above all kind. Yes, that's a big deal. Doogie is proof that being prepared for the moment should still require one to be grateful for this life as well.

Without saying anything else, let's get to it. This is Doogie White, the man with the soaring vocal range that crushes a 1000 ancient warriors. This is Alcatrazz, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.

  • Merely a Collection of Songs | Giant Walker
When the north meets the south, great things happen. Giant Walker, a killer and original quartet from the cities Guildford and Newcastle, have seemingly figured out the entire music business from top to bottom. They haven't released a song yet and people are talking about them.

    Write great songs? Check.
Connect with a well known management company? Check.
Play shows and blow away your contemporaries? Check.

Just don't ask them for commitments on their release schedules and they'll button up like a Sunday dress.

That's all you need to hear to motivate you to listen to this show. You know you want to.

This is my super fun chat with the entire band, the very friendly Giant Walker, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.

    Time Codes:

1:20 The origination of Giant Walker
4:00 The North vs The South
    6:00 The band lives together!
    10:00 Weird responsibilities
13:00 Walked by a small child
17:00 The first ideas aren't always correct
    20:00 The cost of experience
    24:00 The album is coming
    28:30 The diverse songwriting approach
    32:00 Being produced and managed
36:00 Taking the demoes and making them better
    40:30 It just sounds great
45:00 Stone Temple Pilots and imperfection
49:00 Making sure everyone is happy
53:00 Hearing something special and new
    57:00 The band is worthy

    Per promotional material:

Giant Walker are a Heavy Progressive Rock band from Newcastle, UK. After individually relocating 300 miles to further develop their craft, the Geordie quartet was coincidentally born in the South, bound together by their northern heritage and a shared love for bands such as Karnivool, Soundgarden, Radiohead and Deftones. Written during the 2020 lockdown, their upcoming releases feature themes of self isolation and a dystopian reality. Their music captures the many lows of loneliness and tips a hat to the music that gets you through hard times; sweeping you up in a conceptual journey, from giant riffs to melancholic melodies, and ambient soundscapes. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Chris Coulter (Arcane Roots, Jamie Lenman) at the Ranch and Stakeout Studios, Giant Walker have stitched together a sound, woven from the fabric of their influences, that can't be found elsewhere.

  • RS #77 - Jumping off the Struggle Bus | Record Producer Chris Collier
I have really enjoyed doing my show over the last 5 years. I've met so many incredible people. I've chatted with amazing bands and influential creatives who breathe life into the artform.

A good buddy of mine knew perpetually upcoming music producer, Chris Collier and made the introduction. Why do I say perpetually upcoming? Because Chris is always upping his game. He won't rest on his accomplishments, and why would he stop now? He's at the top of his game, for now, but there's always another artistic mountain to climb, so most of us will keep watching from afar, wondering how he's done it.

If you actually listen to the entire show, you'll know the secret, which, in many ways, hasn't ever been a secret, but simply a way of being.

I highly suggest we all try to be a little more like Chris Collier and love what we do with an unrivaled zeal. This is my conversation with the man who's only limit seems to be where the oxygen stops. This is Chris Collier, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.

  • The Muddy River and the Groove Between with Brian Mullins | The Cold Stares
Every once in a while, I am so excited to talk to a member of a band that I can't see straight. I can't slow myself down. My stomach hurts before the interview and I get dry mouth. Honestly, I'm just a walking embarrassment. Today, I have Brian Mullins, the monster drummer from The Cold Stares.

Brian is a magical player and The Cold Stares are the best place to hear his groove. The duo has been together for 14 years and good gravy, are they good. They write incredible songs, and create cool lyrical content and grooves for days. I'm pretty sure that if you don't yet know their work, the chances are you'll love them as much as I when you do.

  • Autonomy is the Precursor of Genius with Rohan Stevenson | I Built The Sky
I may not be the best interviewer, but I feel like I do alright most of the time. This week's interview with an absolute legend, Rohan Stevenson of I Built The Sky, was one where I fought tooth and nail to stay in the conversation. Not because Rohan but because of a little thing called the Moderna shot. Yes, I got a Coronavirus injection before the interview and well... I felt like crap.

Rohan was not only amazingly kind and professional, but he withstood my rambles, so i beg this of you as well. The new acoustic record and the new collaboration records are coming out in the near future. Rohan wasn't able to give specifics, but if you're listening to this show, you know his music is epic, cinematic, and just about as good as perfect gets. In other words, we are in for a treat. ....and if Dave Grohl or Tom Delonge is listening, you're dream collaboration awaits.

  • The Beloved Sound of Obliteration with Frontierer
I've spent the past few days trying to figure out the appropriate words to describe Frontierer, the band, the music, and these 2 souls, Pedram and Calum. Given that it's taken me so long to form my words might give you insight into exactly what makes Frontierer so epic.

If you listen to the radio, or love traditional pop music, there's an extremely good chance you have never heard of them or would even care to. However, if you're like me, and you're always looking around the corner to find the next thing, or if you're already listening to challenging mathematic metal and noise, well... Frontierer might the best thing you already love and understand.

My conversation with Pedram and Calum left me wanting more, and I hope this interview touches you the same way. I say it a lot, but I will tell you this one was pure joy. What a killer duo and what a sensation the band is. You must check out the new documentary entitled "A trail of Noise," and you should pay careful attention to the new music releases because they'll change your life, whether you want them to or not.

  • The Leading Edge of the Storm with Caskets
Matt Flood and Chris McIntosh are 2 of the 5 members of Caskets, a musical force of nature from Leeds in the UK.

I had the opportunity to connect with these kind guys as they are starting the promotional rollout for their major label debut on Sharp Tone Records. The new record, Lost Souls, drops on August 13th and I admit I'm pretty excited about it.

The guys were super cool, put up with all my fanboy action, and gave you, the listener, great insight into who they are, their writing process, and what it feels like when the record business comes crashing around them, both the good parts and not so good parts.

If I wasn't clear before, yeah... I'm definitely digging these guys. They take the best parts of their influences, and filter it through modern technology along with impeccably prepared arrangements to create lush soundscapes pierced by amazing vocals of the highest caliber. This is Caskets, complete and fully formed, ready to take on the world.

I promise you'll enjoy listening to this interview as much as I did doing it. This is my conversational flow with Matt Flood and Chris McIntosh from Caskets, the post hardcore promise of the future, on the Rockstar Superhero Podcast.
