Be Still: Daily Devotional

September 6th, 2024

Listen Later

Today is September 6.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Take a moment and quiet yourself. Take a deep breath. Welcome God’s presence. And say, “Come Holy Spirit.”

Today’s reading is from the book of Micah, chapter. 4.

In the last days
the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established
         as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and peoples will stream to it.
Many nations will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He will judge between many peoples
and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation,
nor will they train for war anymore.
Everyone will sit under their own vine
and under their own fig tree,
and no one will make them afraid,
for the LORD Almighty has spoken.
     All the nations may walk
in the name of their gods,
but we will walk in the name of the LORD
our God for ever and ever.

‘We will walk in the name of the lord our god for ever and ever…’ As you come to prayer today, take some time to get oriented to the state of your heart, your mind, and your ‘walk’ with God…

Listen again to the prophet Micah, and ask God to draw your attention to a particular word or phrase to meditate on today…

This part of Micah is pointing the hearers toward the promise of coming restoration. Just as we live in between the now of the kingdom, and the not yet… the people listening to Micah’s words were living in a time of exile, listing to words of hope and anticipation about a coming kingdom. As we end our time of prayer, asking God to help you turn your eyes toward Him in faith, hope and love… and to fill you with anticipation of his restoration.
