Sequelisers

Every now and then we get a new movie about (at least) two people forced to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. A lesson in forced empathy. Why? Well, we'll get onto that. How? Again, we'll get to that. And whether a horror, science fiction, or comedy, they usually follow the same beats. Let's talk about it.

Not every film gets a chance to be so terrible we have to fix it - some of them never even see the light of day. Whether it's projects that never get past some awesome concept art or fully finished films that studios eliminate for a tax write-off, there's a long history of films that could have been, and this week we're discussing just a few of them.

This is an episode all about those "Oh, it's [insert name of great actor here]. Wow, they really stole the show!" moments. When a performer only gets a few minutes or a scene or two but still makes a huge difference to a film.

A single boney hand has extended itself from a black robe and knocked on the door of Sequelisers HQ. Thankfully, we just said we weren't in. But to make sure we don't get caught off-guard by the many different guises death may present itself as, let's talk about how death is represented and personified on film.

Representations of neurodivergency in film have a long and frequently frustrating history. However, it's only relatively recently that calls for better portrayals and more involvement for neurodiverse people in front of and behind the camera have gained traction.

In this episode, we take a look at how a variety of films have attempted to tackle neurodiverse characters, from the good to the misguided to the actively harmful.

Double double toil and trouble. That's right, this week we're diving into the world of spooks and scares.. but that's it. No real blood, gore or terror. Instead we're going to follow the breadcrumbs of Halloween-appropriate horror aimed at younger audiences that lead you deeper into the woods of full-blown adult horror films.

Movies often need antagonists, and bullying is (sadly) an almost universal experience, so it's no surprise that there's a lot to talk about here, from the classic tropes to more contemporary approaches, as well as some of our own history on both sides of the bullying divide.

Bad films, bad films, watcha gonna do? Watcha gonna do when we sequelise you? ....or something to that effect. This week, thanks to a patreon vote, we will be discussing police representation in film. The evolution from a point of mockery to pantheons of justice, the stories of lone cops against a corrupt system, and the intense political baggage that comes along for the ride. So without further ado, you have the right to remain silent.. while listening to our podcast.
