  • Why Do We Care What People Think?

    Send us Fan Mail

Music:  "Everything Is Working Out" by Sarah, the Illstrumentalist, licensed under Epidemic Sound.  Original work available at https://www.epidemicsound.com/music/tracks/d82030d0-11ae-4ed6-b8c0-54046531b869/.

In this episode, my wife and I have an honest and relatable conversation about why as people, we care so much about what other people think of us. We talk about the need for approval, fear of judgment and rejection, comparison, and how social media has made other people’s opinions more visible than ever through likes, comments, views, and followers.

We share some of the things we secretly care about being judged for and explore how those insecurities can start in childhood. We also discuss the comparison trap and whether we truly want what other people have or simply want to feel like we’re doing as well as everyone else. Most importantly, we talk about when other people’s opinions actually matter, how to consider the source, and what we might do differently if we knew nobody would judge us. We wrap up by reflecting on what we would tell our younger selves and the reminder that most people are far too busy worrying about what others think of them to spend as much time judging us as we imagine.

In this episode, my wife and I reflect on 26 years of marriage and how our understanding of happiness has evolved over time. From serving together in the Marine Corps to navigating the highs and lows of family life, careers, and the everyday challenges that come with a long-term relationship, we've learned that happiness isn't a fixed destination—it's something that changes with each season of life.

We talk openly about how happiness means different things to each of us, why that's perfectly okay, and how mutual respect, communication, and a willingness to grow together have strengthened our marriage over the years. Rather than expecting to always see life through the same lens, we've discovered that embracing our differences has helped us build a deeper partnership.

Whether you're newly married, have been together for decades, or simply want to strengthen your relationships, this conversation offers honest insights into commitment, resilience, and finding joy in the journey together. Our hope is that our experiences remind you that lasting happiness isn't about perfection—it's about choosing each other, adapting through life's changes, and continuing to grow side by side.

We talk about how we first met in the Marines, the experiences that shaped us, and what life looked like after hanging up the uniform. We dive into the challenges of transitioning to civilian life, raising kids, being husbands and fathers, and how our faith has influenced the men we've become.

Of course, we couldn't help but laugh about some of the wild stories from our younger days and compare them to the much calmer (and hopefully wiser) lives we live now. We also take a detour into one of our favorite topics—Texas BBQ—and debate what makes it so special.

  • Empowerment Through The Darkness: Talking with Christian Navarro

    Send us Fan Mail

Music:  "Everything Is Working Out" by Sarah, the Illstrumentalist, licensed under Epidemic Sound.  Original work available at https://www.epidemicsound.com/music/tracks/d82030d0-11ae-4ed6-b8c0-54046531b869/.

In this episode, I talk to a phone guest, Christian Navarro,  a fellow retired Marine and a close friend to discuss his book , "Empowerment Through The Darkness, a deeply personal look at the internal struggles many people face but rarely talk about.  We explore his journey from childhood and military service to becoming an author, and how those experiences shaped both his strengths and his inner battles.

A major focus of our conversation is the "inner critic" - the internal voice that can drive high performance on the outside while creating doubt, pressure, and self-criticism on the inside.  He shares how this voice showed up in his life, how it influenced his relationships, leadership, and sense of identity, and what it took to finally begin confronting it rather than suppressing it.

We also talk through some of the darker seasons of his life, including the moments that forced him to pause and reevaluate everything.  From there, we move into what healing and growth looked like for him- what helped him turn things around, how his perspective on strength has evolved, and the role that discipline, awareness, and support  systems played in the process.

The conversation also dives into why he felt compelled to write this book, who it's intended to help, and what he hopes readers take away from it.  At its core, this is a story about learning to face internal struggles head-on and finding empowerment not by ignoring the darkness, but by working through it.

We close with reflections on leadership, military culture, and mental resilience, along with practical insights for anyone who may be dealing with their own inner battles.  This episode is ultimately about growth, honesty, and the reminder that real strength often comes from confronting what's happening within us-not just what the world sees on the outside.
