The final sermon in the Back to Basics series from Vijay

A spiritual fruit listed in Galatians 5:22 is goodness and it grows out of a life that is in tune with a good God and under the control of His Spirit. In this message, Florence identifies ways in which God is good and suggests how we, as followers of Jesus Christ, can demonstrate the spiritual fruit of goodness to those around us.

James continues looking at the significance of the Day of Pentecost. In this message, the key which helps unlock our understanding of Pentecost is an ancient prophecy by Joel. The coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost fulfilled that prophecy. It also shows us God's vision for the church and for the future. We are invited to be part of what God is doing in building his church.

Florence continues her series on the fruit of the Spirit and focuses today on the spiritual fruit of kindness. She looks at how God displays kindness towards sinful humanity; how He desires kindness to be shown by His children; and how He develops kindness in us when we cooperate with the work of the Spirit in our lives.

The kind of love that God asks of us is formed in us as we obey his commandments. The basis of this obedience is faith, that is, to know Christ as the Son of God. But, how does a person come to know God? The knowledge of God is a gift of God. God not only reveals himself through the events of the life of Jesus, but also enables us to recognise him through the Holy Spirit in us. So, faith is the gift of God. Those who believe Christ have eternal life, a life that is not only unending, but also a life that is the best sort of life available to us now.

In this message James looks at one of the most amazing events in history - the day of Pentecost. This is the day on which the church, God's new and exclusively inclusive community, was born and, in the power of the Holy Spirit, turned the world upside-down!

Everyone sees what their belief system allows them to see. Faith, in this sense, is knowledge. When we look at Christ through faith, we see the love of God for us. Those who come to know and experience this love personally reveal that relationship with Christ through their boldness of love for those around them. In this way those who know Christ can't help imitiating the one they love.

Who we understand Christ Jesus to be impacts our conduct. To love right, we need to know Jesus right. And it is here that John sheds light on one of the many roles of the 3rd person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to understand the truth of the incredible condescension and humility of the Son of God in becoming Jesus Christ of Nazareth. When we appreciate the enormous sacrifice of God in Jesus Christ, we begin to appreciate the enormous sacrifice called upon God's people to love and commit ourselves to bring about life in others.
