But what is possibly more amazing and the point of John’s telling of this miracle is Christ willingness to bolding move towards the cross. Bethany was just 1.7 miles from Jerusalem and as John 11 and 12 make clear Jesus returning to this region and raising Lazarus was the last straw for the Jewish authorities that wanted to kill him. Well there is hope. No matter what ensnares you, Jesus loving and tenderly wants to set you free! This sermon tells the story of Jesus healing of the deaf mute in Mark 7 a man who knew the isolation and confinement we too need freedom from.

It says in Luke 7:9 “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." What is so different about this faith than the faith the majority displays? This faith recognizes that God’s power isn’t about me. He didn’t justify his asking, he didn’t try to impress Jesus with his worthiness, he didn’t put his faith in a formula. The Centurion recognized that the power comes from whom faith is put in—Jesus!

21st century Western medicine has made it so that few diseases require total isolation. Yet in the two thirds world some know what it means to be “untouchable.” They can still understand the plight of the woman suffering from the issues of blood who daringly reached out for the hem of Jesus’ robe. This sermon asks it’s listeners the question: will you be satisfied living your life as a member of the crowd pressing around Christ, or will you deliberately reach the way this woman did?
