In Matthew 9:9-17, Matthew recounts his own (miraculous) story of being called to follow Jesus. In these verses Jesus is the commander, host, and doctor. He calls us to follow him, gathers us into community, and brings healing for our sins.

In Matthew 8:18-34 there is a very strange story involving a whole herd of pigs who launch headlong off a cliff into the water. But these pigs point us to Jesus. The Jesus who goes to the fringes, who brings freedom to the captives, the Jesus who turns our world upside down, and bears all evil and sin. In short, the Jesus who changes everything.

In Matthew 8:1-4 Jesus heals a leper and makes him clean. We learn from these verses about the heart of Jesus for us, and the healing Jesus gives to us.
