  • Decisions, Decisions
It is not easy to make the decision to choose life and leave an abusive
relationship.  It is not easy to make the decision to choose life and live
authentically in world that values perfection.  It’s not easy to make the
decision to choose life and speak out for those that have no voice.  In a
world that values violence it is not easy to decide to choose life and
stand up for peace.  In a world that looks for scapegoats on which to lay
blame for every manner of social ills in an effort to escape responsibility
for collective selfishness, it is difficult to choose life and declare that
everyone is a beloved child of God and worthy of all the human dignity into
    which they were born.

  • Flip The Script
To think about those times when we as individuals or as members of
community have taken something eveil and turned it into something good.
When we have taken heartbreak and turned it into joy, when we have taken
desolation and turned it into happiness. when we have looked at war and
worked instead for peace, when we have seen separateness and division and
strove for togetherness and community. When we have been confronted with
death – whether that death be emotional, physical, psychological, or
spiritual, and still kept our hearts open to the promise of resurrection.

  • Congratulations
In America we still value the strong, the rich. The powerful. The mighty.
The CEOs. And When I think of all the maliciousness and name calling done
in the name of Christianity, ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and
persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my
account’ takes on a whole new meaning.

  • No Time Like the Present
We might feel pulled or tugged or pushed in a certain direction, and find
ourselves fighting and balking at every turn. Or we may just be on our
metaphorical shores fishing, when out of the blue someone walks up and asks
us to come along on the journey.

  • The Love of a Child
They trust us to provide them with a safe place to live, and enough food to
eat. They trust us to dress them warmly in the cold, and they trust that if
they get sick, we’ll do what we can to get them healthy again. They just
know that we’ll keep them protected, and in return for all of this they
love us with absolute unconditional love.  It seems that no matter what we
do, when our children are little, they love us, because they don’t know how
    to do anything else.

  • In You I am Well Pleased
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been called a lot of different names in my
life. What about you? What are some of the names that you’ve been known by?
What are the names that you can still hear echo in your head? ..
God tells us, “No, that’s not my name for you. I call you my child. My name
for you is BELOVED.  I am not disappointed in you. To the contrary, with
    you, I am well pleased."
The promise of baptism, God’s promise to us, is that we are God’s beloved
children. This is why baptism is about repentance – a change in our
thoughts.  Preacher David Lose writes that through baptism, we know WHO we
are because we know WHOSE we are.  God’s beloved child.

  • The People In Your Neighborhood
And we can also be God with skin for others, too. Maybe the kid at the fast
food joint can’t make change because he’s never been taught how to. Maybe
the guy who needs a few buck for gas really DOES need a few bucks for gas.
Maybe the person with the thousand coupons is barely making ends meet – or
maybe that person is like Teryl or Raylnn - they are super couponers and
they get a lot of free stuff and they GIVE AWAY a lot of it.  Or maybe my
neighbor plays the stereo loud because it drowns out the voices in his
head, or because the song just really makes him feel good…We are all
children of God. God has moved into our neighborhood and God’s love burns
brightly in our hearts with an intensity that no darkness can overcome.
Sometimes we need to be that light for others. Sometimes we get to be God
    with skin for someone else.

  • No Room for Fear
Just as the star pointed the way for the magi to find the baby Jesus, the
grown up Jesus points the way to God. He tells us that the greatest
commandment is to love God with all of our heart and mind and strength. And
it is ALSO to love our neighbor as ourselves. To love our neighbor is to
love God. Love points the way to God.

  • Promise of Peace
And this is not about some future story--
Not some "off in the distance, " away from us thing.
This isn’t about what MIGHT happen if we do right and live right.
This isn’t about what is GOING to happen.
It’s not about someday God  cleaning up the mess
It’s not about someday God lifting up the downtrodden.
    It’s not about someday.
    It’s about TOday
The story of the birth of Jesus is the story of God breaking in to our
lives. The story of ridiculous, incredible, magnificent joy – the knowledge
that not only will things be different, but right now, at this moment,
    things ARE different.

  • U-Turn
At Christmas time we more easily detect the hazards if a life unprepared
for Jesus, we more easily see what we lack, more vividly experience our
need for God, for SOMETHING, for ANYTHING that will ease our burdens.
