I met him in the middle of the week that my seminary class visited the
US/Mexico border. On that first day, when we were given our schedules, I
saw that at some point we were going to talk to Rob, a Border Patrol agent
who lives in Douglas, Arizona and patrols the US/Mexican border between his
town and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico.
Now, a couple of days prior we’d heard from people that had run-ins with
border patrol agents, who’d been arrested by them, who’d had family members
killed by them. We’d seen that big, ugly, hugely ineffective “fence” in
Nogales, and then another differently built but equally useless and
wasteful fence in Cochise County. We’d heard about the conditions in
detention centers and how the border patrol agents would turn the AC on
when it was cold out and turn the heat up when it was hot. How rather than
hand food to the detainees, they would throw packages of crackers and
peanut butter to those they’d arrested and put in cages to await
deportation.
So, yeah, when we finally got to meet Rob, I knew all about him just by his
title. Rob V. -- Border Patrol Agent.
