God’s Chosen People

When the children of Israel finally entered the Promised Land three things happened. All the males were circumcised. The people celebrated the Passover Feast. God stopped providing manna. Each required faith in God. Each took them deeper into humble dependence on God. This is the walk of those who are God’s chosen people: deeper faith, deeper dependency, deeper commitment.

Remembering Our Lord

The purpose of communion is to remember our Lord Jesus. When we meet together to celebrate the Lord”s Supper our attention should be on Him, for He is its center. There are may traditions built around the supper, but its essence must remain – remembering Jesus our Lord. To forget Him is to forget who we are and why we gather.

God’s Work of Redemption

How God works His redemptive plan in the lives of individuals is a mystery and a wonder! Rahab is given a promise that she and her family will be saved. But the story seems to end with the departure of the spies; we have to wait a bit to find out if she really is saved. But as she leaves the story line we find out she hangs the scarlet cord out of her window. It is the least dangerous of all the acts she had done, but it is the only thing given to her to hang her hope on. What do we learn about God from the first part of Rahab’s story? We do not make God’s plans for Him nor dictate to Him who He is going to save. God words in people’s lives as He chooses. For by grace we are saved through faith.

The repetition of God’s command to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous” three times is auspicious: Joshua has a history of strength and courage, he has been trained by Moses himself, and most importantly, the promises of God stand behind the endeavor.  This is God’s command, so the question is: what does God mean by “strong” and “courageous”? Our strength and courage rest on God’s faithfulness to His promises.
