People were drawn to Jesus. They recognized that His message differed from the religious elite.

When His friends and family heard about the content of His preaching they came to get Him. Their intent was to confine him to their home as was common of those who were mentally unstable at that time.

Jesus responds to the accusations of being possessed by Satan and casting out demons through his power.

Jesus goes on to accuse the Scribes and Pharisees of blasphemy.

This week’s Old Testament Lesson depicts a change in the mindset of the Israelite nation.

No longer did they want to be under the leadership of God. They wanted to be like all of the other nations around them. . . nations
that God had warned them against emulating.

God gives them exactly what they demand. God would give them a worldly king, a king just "like all the nations." The result would be catastrophic: they would reap the results of a worldly king. They would reap exactly what they had sown.

We must also guard against seeking or allowing another king to rule our lives.

A Life-Changing Experience

Heaven or hell depends upon whether one accepts or declines the offer of salvation. Accepting the offer means that the individual experiences a complete life change that allows them to enter into heaven.   The phrase “born again” literally means “regenerated.” This phrase also means being "born from above."   What is it that we need regeneration from?   The answer is sin, death, and the devil!   Since all human beings are dead in their trespasses and sins, only being born again in Jesus Christ provides life.

Most of us Christians are very familiar with the Gospel Lesson for this week.

Mainly, because it contains a verse we memorized early on in Sunday School. You may have heard it described as The Gospel In A Nutshell.

That verse is, of course, John 3:16.

The Gospel Lesson is also fascinating because it records a  conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus. Nicodemus is recognized as being a leader within the Sanhedrin. . .possibly the Chief Ruler within this Jewish ruling body.
