  • The Root of Sin: Torn Out & Thrown Away
Pastor Jason uses 2 Timothy 3:16–4:5 to frame an exposition of Matthew 5:27–30, organizing the text under four primary actions: 1. Reproving 2. Correcting 3. Instructing 4. Exhorting First, he explains that Jesus reproves "ear-tickling teaching," referencing how the religious scribes truncated the seventh commandment into a minimal, external restriction. Under this superficial teaching, people felt secure by merely refraining from the physical act, completely ignoring internal desire. Second, Jesus provides correcting truth by asserting His ultimate authority as the divine lawgiver. He clarifies that anyone looking at a woman with lust has already committed adultery in his heart, demonstrating that God's law stringently demands purity of heart rather than just outward compliance. Moving into instruction, the sermon addresses Jesus's radical commands to tear out one's right eye or cut off one's right hand if they cause one to stumble. Emphasizes that "stumbling" in this context is a severe, near-unrecoverable fall from salvation, comparing it to the temporary believers in the parable of the soils who fall away during affliction. Rather than prescribing literal self-mutilation, these extreme commands serve as figurative language highlighting the deep seriousness required to deal with the root of sin. The sermon concludes with a powerful exhortation to pursue holiness, urging believers to make no provision for the flesh, to aggressively starve and kill sin, and to rest their hope in the grace of Jesus Christ.
