Sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, have been around ever since human beings started congregating. They share a common mode of transmission—sexual contact. They are prevalent in most world populations, although the causative microbes don’t have the same infection frequency in all areas.

A brief note on terminology: “sexually transmitted infection” has gradually replaced the older term “sexually transmitted disease” because patients frequently have no symptoms or even signs of disease on physical exam. These patients still need to be treated because they may pass their infection on to others.
