A substantial proportion of these admissions are rated by clinicians as potentially avoidable or unnecessary.
Thus, Medicare is spending hundreds of millions of dollars for these hospitalizations the often result in hospital-related complications and morbidity.
Several strategies and tools are available that may be effective in reducing these hospitalizations and related complications and costs.
Financial incentives in the Medicare fee-for-service system often incentivize these hospitalizations, whereas Medicare Advantage and other value-based programs try to reduce them
