Our topics this week include the President's first speech to Congress, the economy and the new bill for D.C. Statehood called the  'Washington, DC Admission Act' introduced by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson to make Washington, DC the 51st state.  The bill is co-sponsored by all 116 Democrats. In the past, Congresswoman Norton has introduced DC statehood bills with each new Congress, previously known as the New Columbia Admission Act. The bill introduced in the 115th Congress will reflect the statehood efforts of the New Columbia Statehood Commission and the historic support of 85.6 percent of voters on the November ballot question. This is the first time that the bill will be called the “Washington, DC Admission Act” to reflect the new name selected by the DC Council.

Our guest Takao Yamada, a Seattle-based attorney and entrepreneur, is a co-founder of AirportLawyer.org. Yamada, along with a group of volunteer attorneys and software developers, created a new app to help travelers impacted by the Trump Administration’s 'immigration ban'.  Airport Lawyer (https://www.airportlawyer.org/) connects refugees, immigrants and other travelers who possess valid U.S. visas and green cards from the seven previously banned countries, with teams of volunteer attorneys on the ground. Using Airport Lawyer, a community member can input information about herself, or a friend or family member traveling into the United States. That information is then shared securely with localized teams of volunteer lawyers, who can be available at the airport to monitor the arrival.

It aims to send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights.
