  • #13: Influence and Impact as Teachers

Over the last several weeks, a lot has happened in the world of social media influencers. Specifically, Rachel Hollis had a video that went viral both on Instagram and Tik Tok that ended being truly hurtful to so many but that's not what I'm here to talk about. I want to talk about influence and impact that we have as teachers both in our classrooms and on social media.

What we covered in this episode:

    • Belief that hard work will pay off when in reality teachers work very hard and don't earn the money they deserve
    • Influence and Impact we have on social media, no matter how big your platform is
    • Influence and impact inside our classrooms
    • Have a community promoting love and support rather than hate and violence

  • #12: Circle Time Management in Early Childhood

I have seen many teachers asking about engaging students in circle time because they are struggling with engagement and interaction. I truly believe this is one of the hardest things to learn to do. It's all about trying and failing and trying again. A few questions to keep in mind as you listen to this episode:

    • Do you transition your students into circle time? How smooth is that transition?
    • Do you review rules every day on a consistent basis?
    • Is your circle time developmentally appropriate for the age you are teaching?
    • Are your students involved in circle time?

4 Tips to Managing Circle Time:

    1. Rule Review
    2. Sit spots
    3. Engagement/Interactivity
    4. Flexibility

If you want to dive in deeper, I have a mini-course inside Learning Blocks Membership talking specifically about this! I even have a workbook for you to work through at your own pace so you can gain control and end out the year in the best way possible. Grab the link below.

  • #11: Social Emotional Learning

In the last few days I have been very intentional in working on professional development that is specifically related to social emotional learning. This is an especially important subject to learn about this year when so many students are learning virtually and don't have opportunities for in-person interactions. As teachers, it is our responsibility to be aware of both our students needs and our own.

What we cover in this episode:

    • Why social emotional learning is important
    • 4 ways to incorporate SEL into your classroom environment

  • #9: Investing & Teacher Professional Development

This topic is something I truly something I believe in. I have had some wonderful learning experiences because I took a risk; I invested in myself and in my learning.

Don't get me wrong, investing can be very SCARY especially when teaching doesn't necessarily pay you the "big bucks" but what happens when you did the scary thing and it was worth every penny? Wouldn't you love to be able to implement all that you learned? I've had experiences investing where it wasn't worth it and I felt like I had wasted valuable money I could've used for something else or even just for savings. Has that happened to you? Did that kind of experience stop you from investing again?

What we cover in this episode:

    • My experiences in investing in business/camp/teaching
    • The benefits of investing in general
    • Teacher PD that can help you become a better teacher to your students

  • #5: Teacher Mental Health

Do you struggle with mental health? Do you find that your mental health takes a toll on you throughout the school year? Today, I decided to talk about my mental health journey and the ways I’ve learned to cope. I never experienced it until I went through turmoil in my own family and at the time, I was living at home so it really affected me.

I went through a time where I struggled to get out of bed, I completely distanced myself from everybody who loved me, and I was crying myself to sleep every single night. I didn’t know why this was affecting me and had no idea what these signs meant but I knew I needed help. So, I reached out to a friend, who happens to be a social worker, who then put me in touch with a therapist and from there I was able to manage my depressive states. We have been in a pandemic for 8 months and at the beginning of the pandemic, a lot of feelings were brought out. My anxiety and depression came about in full swing. We had a stay at home order, I was not in my regular routine, I wasn’t going to work every day and I couldn’t handle the uncertainty that was happening around me. I had to find a way to manage the anxiety and make sure that as much as I was struggling, I was able to also show up for my students and for myself and for this business I’m building.

What I cover in this episode:

    • My journey in mental health
    • What I learned about myself and my mental health through this pandemic
    • Teacher workload vs. teacher mental health
    • Tips and Tricks I use to cope with anxiety

  • #4: Find a Teacher Mentor

So many new teachers need mentors to help them get through their first year of teaching but so many aren’t willing or able to find that person that is a good fit.  To tell you the truth, if I had had a mentor, my first year of teaching would have looked very different. I’m always honest about the mistakes I make along the way. I knew I needed someone to guide me but I didn’t know how much I truly needed that guidance until after that year was over.

I know that mentors aren’t always easy to come by. And especially one that is well suited for your needs. But I promise, once you find the right person to work with you it makes all the difference. Just know that being a great teacher does not mean you have to struggle the whole way through. There are ways for you to be the great teacher you’re meant to be.

These are things I want to share with you, the teacher, who is listening to this to show you that it’s okay to fail but you get back up and do it all over again. It boggles my mind when I see new teachers who are struggling in their first years and don’t have any help from those around them.

What I cover in this Episode:

    • My experience without a mentor
    • Why I truly believe my first year teaching experience would have been different had I had a mentor
    • Why a mentor is especially important today
