On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes discusses moving forward on a path, and something happens to derail that plan. The important thing is to not wallow in that situation for an extended period of time. 

Wes and his family have been in their new home for a month now. He has received some devastating news but is determined to do what he can to solve the issue. A comment on Tik Tok said “Sometimes you can’t dodge the wrench. Take the hit and keep moving forward” from the great movie Dodgeball.  Wes got hit by the wrench but is doing all he can to move forward. He thinks of ways to fix this situation and not play the victim. 

Two years ago, Wes says this news would be devastating to him, and it would be more difficult to move past it. His mindset was negative, and he had the attitude to expect less and if nothing happens, no harm; no foul.  He used to constantly compare himself to others given his competitive nature.

Today, Wes has a more positive mindset by adjusting the way he thinks. It’s not easy. There is a choice. He could have the victim mentality and blame others for the situation or control what he can control; his emotions, reactions, and what he does. He also competes with himself looking to be better today than yesterday. 

Wes challenges his followers to think outside the box. It’s important to remember that the people talking negatively about you aren’t doing better than you. 

Wes is moving forward by finishing his studio by putting in the flooring. He’s controlling what he can control. 

With his positive attitude, there’s no doubt Wes will move past this situation, learn from it, and be better than ever.

Join Wes Tankersley on this episode as he gives insight on his thoughts from this week. He talks about the journey of his podcast; his successes and challenges.

One person creates his own success. No one can do it for you. There has to be the belief that it’s going to happen. Wes wants to be his own boss someday and not have to work for anybody else. He is working to make that happen by continuing this podcast. 

The haters are appearing on YouTube and other platforms. There was a hateful comment on YouTube recently on one of his shorts that said he doesn’t need a studio because he gets no views. He used to let the mean comments bother him, and he would reply, but now he just deletes them. One thing to remember is the haters don’t make sense and don’t know him. In fact, Wes just got a notification that his YouTube channel has reached 175.000 views. Wes reflects on that number. That’s 175.000 people he reached whether they like what he has to say or not.

Wes has been doing this podcast for about four years. He reveals that he gets many emails from companies that want to sponsor him, but many are scams. He has never had anyone sponsor his podcast.  He comes across a few that seem legit. One recently caught his attention. They want him to try their product and talk about it in an episode. They also want him to do two interviews in person with the company. Since his studio isn’t finished yet, he is working to figure out how to make that happen. He has a few friends he can talk to about using their studio. He is using his resources and connections to make it happen. 

Adam Carolla, Gary Vee, and Joe Rogan have a huge following, so they have millions of people watching and listening to their podcasts. As a result, the everyday regular person may believe if they start a podcast, they can make money right away and have tons of followers. The truth is it takes hard work and sacrifice to make a podcast successful. It takes time to create a following and to make money. Most people give up  three or four episodes in because they are not patient enough to keep going. If a person goes into podcasting for the purpose of making money only, he will be very disappointed. 

Wes reason for doing this podcast is to help people find their success. Signs come to him to keep moving forward when he feels like quitting. One example is running into his friend Matt at the hardware store. Matt has an awesome studio that potentially could be an interview space for the sponsorship for Wes. Karma is real. Wes believes and visualizes it will happen. Good things will happen when they’re supposed to happen. One has to be patient and not give up too soon!  Giving up on dreams is not the answer. There will be bumps in the road, but how does a person deal with those bumps?

Join Wes Tankersley on this episode as he talks about the trials and tribulations of moving into his new house. He records this episode in the guest room of his new house since his studio isn’t ready yet. He designed it to be just right with the lighting, sound, and decorations, so he has to be patient. Guests will join him in that studio when he interviews them. 

Now Wes and his wife are in the process of unpacking everything. Since this will be their forever home, they need to be meticulous in where they put things because those things will be there for a long time. 

Before the forever home, he and his wife had a few houses before this one that were not as expensive. The house they lived in before was a rental as they did not plan to live there long. In moving, Wes realized he had a lot of stuff! Some people even suggested he was a hoarder, but he rejected that theory. He is sentimental about things, especially baseball shirts he wore when he coached. Through this moving process, he learned to let go. Does he really need it? He and his wife worked hard for their stuff, so letting go has been a challenge.  They don’t have time or the patience to sell, so they donated a lot of stuff.

Growing up, he and his two brothers had what they needed. His parents couldn’t afford a lot of things, so the kids didn’t have what everyone else had. For example, when the kids had Jordan sneakers, he had Nike. Wes and his brothers were growing boys, so they kept growing out of clothes and sneakers. 

Since moving into their forever home, Wes had to adjust to new routines. There is some difficulty getting to his appointments and getting his kids where they need to be since they live in a different place. He is now driving with more traffic since people are heading into the city of Boise like he is. Before he lived in Boise, so commuting was a lot easier. It’s a transition, but he will figure it out. 

Wes is excited to continue podcasting. A few more episodes will be recorded in the guest room until that studio is ready.  This is what he loves to do. There are some obstacles in the road, but he is dealing with it. There’s no stepping back. He is moving forward!

On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes's buddy Jhae Pfenning takes over his podcast this week while Wes and his family move into their forever home! Jhae is the host of his own podcast Hard Parking. Jhae' s topic of choice this week is time.

Time can not be created. It has to be moved around to accommodate life. Sacrifices may have to be made in order to do the things that need to be done. For example, Jhae sacrifices his time in the morning by going to the gym instead of sleeping in. 

Jhae says he has no time for people who have no time for him. People can use their time however they choose, but if they choose to not make time for someone, that someone can choose to not make time for them either. It's frustrating when certain people are the only ones that reach out to ones in their circle. The people to whom they reach out only reach out themselves when they need something. 

Jhae talks about a friend with whom he collaborated to create t-shirts and hoodies. They talked about who they could contact for quality clothes. This person ended up going out on his own and launching his own merchandise. Jhae was upset and continued to struggle, and this person never talked with Jhae unless he needed something. Jhae decided he didn't have time for him anymore. 

Jhae describes himself as a creative. This is a person paid to generate content and ideas. The worst thing to say to a creative is "You have too much time on your hands." They took their time to create something. Saying that is an insult. Jhae asks what do people do when their time is not demanded? However time is spent is up to them.

Join Wes Tankersley on this episode of Shaping Success as he talks with Brandi Wolf about her entrepreneurial endeavors. Brandi discusses her day job as the owner/publisher of GREET EAGLE and her passion for meditation.As an entrepreneur, she has tried different things in her life to find a few things that stick. She started in her 20's and just got by financially with her entrepreneurial ambitions.  The key is finding what works for one’s personality and work ethic.What stuck for her was publishing and meditation. She describes meditation as a tool to help stay in the present using breathing and visualization. Since she was young, she has meditated without realizing what it was. She was just trying to fall asleep and quiet her mind. Then it evolved into meditating to de-stress.  She had a string of traumas in her life that started in 2002 when her father committed suicide. Brandi points out that people don’t realize they are traumatized when it’s happening. They go into survival mode. The realization comes when the dust settles from the traumatic events. Meditation helped her heal. As she healed, she changed and those around her changed. When the energies don’t align anymore, it’s time to let go. She and Wes discuss yoga and meditation. Wes says when people are in a crisis, they don’t breathe and tense up. Brandi says yoga uses each movement to put a person in a present state. Yoga and meditation get a bad rap since people associate them with being religious or something. The reality is that meditation is really a tool that can be partnered with any philosophy or thought-form. It can be very simple. With that, Brandi gives a several examples of meditation: Guided meditation is the type most people know. It uses visualization and involves taking a journey, for example, through the body; relaxing the feet all the way to the head. There’s walking meditation in which a person stays in the present while walking; visualizing and breathing. The one Brandi uses mos
t often is mantra meditation.  It’s making it a part of your daily ritual, like brushing teeth or taking a shower. Take the time to do nothing and be in the present. Brandi shares that time management is very important and works towards scheduling in creative time, family time and fun time.  The key is to plan! If it’s not scheduled, it may not happen. In the future, Brandi would like to teach meditation full time. She would like to offer virtual classes because of its convenience and ability to reach more people. Her goal is to help entrepreneurs succeed using meditation.She and Wes agree that the thing to do is to teach others what one has learned. In this solo episode, Wes takes us on a journey through the perception vs reality of his podcast. The perception is he has tons of followers of his podcast  and millions watch on YouTube. The reality is very different.

The truth is people only see a small part of his life and from there make their assumptions. Right now, Wes confesses he is having trouble keeping up with the podcast because of other things happening in his life. The podcast is not his full time job. It is an outlet for him. He is inspired daily by people asking him questions, commenting on his social media, and just doing what they are doing in life.

The reality is Wes has been doing his podcast for 4 years trying to build a following. It has not been easy or fast, but he is pushing through it. People don’t see the struggles.  In the beginning, he had help from a friend when he only had a camera and a microphone. Gradually, he invested in more equipment to help him build the podcast. 

Today, he is still in the process of finding new ways to get out there. He is looking to get into the Beta Creator Fund on Tik Tok. He already has the 10,000 followers needed, and now the goal is to get 1000,000 views on his videos and maintain it. The creator must reach 100,000 views multiple times. 

This year he just got monetized on YouTube and has more people to help him with his podcast, such as Jhae Pfenning who has his own podcast Hard Parking. In the 4 years he has done this podcast, he has had 43.000 downloads on the audio and 231 episodes published. On YouTube, he has 1,961 subscribers

He builds a network with the guests he has on his podcast. He follows them, and they follow him and help one another with their following and other possible projects. 

Wes loves to interview people, but he knows how important the solo episodes are in showing people who he is. He wants people to know he is not fake but authentic. He makes a point to surround himself with positive people who won’t constantly bring him down. This means if something negative happens or something negative is said over and over, he can bring himself out of it. As seen with multiple guests on the show, the words that are used can affect the outcome.

How can we help our favorite creators? Wes says there are many ways. People can like, share, subscribe, follow them on all their social media platforms, join other platforms such as Patreon, and purchase their merchandise. 

With his busy life being a husband, father, day job, and moving into a new house, Wes knows he needs to do better. He also challenges us to find our success.

TY HOESGEN


In this episode, Wes talks with Ty HOESGEN, a communication coach and author. He talks about the lost art of communication, how he got into the field, and how people can become more effective communicators through voice and body language. He and Wes discuss how people today avoid face-to face communication and bury themselves in their phones only communicating through text messages and emails.

Ty grew up on a farm in Canada with a small population. Once he graduated from University, he started selling life insurance.  He was shy growing up, and now he's talking to complete strangers about disease, accidents, and traumas. This gave him anxiety and trouble sleeping as he was not doing well at his job. He knew he had to do something.

He read, took classes, googled, and practiced. Ty points out that when people put time and effort into something, results will happen. When he was seeking help with communication, there weren't life coaches. 

As a coach, the first step is a phone call with the client.  Together they establish goals, find out the challenges the client has.  Why does the client want to become a better communicator? What's the struggle? How do they make the fastest progression? 

When speaking, the idea is to use frameworks and structure. Effort and intention will help become a better communicator. There isn't a need for extra time. Practice can happen at work with small talk with coworkers.  When time is spent with a significant other, loved one, friends, or family people can practice at that time as well. 

When COVID hit, face-to-face communication fell drastically. Virtual communication took off and is still prevalent today.  Ty offers tips for effectively communicating virtually. He shows how to look at the camera on the computer or other device, so it looks like people are looking right at the other person in the eyes. Ty offers both virtual and in person coaching. He adapts to whatever his clients need. 

Ty offers an acronym for effective communication: PREP.   P is stating the main point in one sentence. R is why the point is true. E is for evidence to support the point. P is for restating the point.  This is a tool people can use  right away.

Join Wes on this episode as he interviews the hilarious Mark Paul, an influencer and digital creator. Mark discusses coaching for travel baseball teams and the drama that ensues with the kids and the parents. He started Tik Tok a few years ago at the suggestion of his then 14-year old daughter.  At first he vented about the team and posted satire about it for 6 months.  

Growing up in Kentucky, he was into weight lifting and fitness, and had a good physique, but he wasn't good at baseball.  He was however a good coach because he can relate  and adapt to different types of kids and coach accordingly. 

Today he has 3 businesses. He is an entrepreneur making sponsorship deals, a clothing line, and designs sunglasses. Because of his gregarious personality and humor, and the fact that he can pal around with the CEOs down to the janitor, people trust him. He worked for E-commerce company in Louisville, KY. They asked him to speak  at an event in Florida. He ended up hanging out with all kinds of people including MLB players. A friend at ECommerce told him he can do these things on his own. He didn't need a corporation.

This trust led him to the Dingers Agency where he recruits kids.. He helps the parents do things on their own such as create a website. This leads to him helping them down the road if the kids decide he wants to continue pursuing baseball as a career. He's not only good with the kids but with the parents as well. He encourages the parents to do what is best for their child, even if that child no longer wants to play baseball.

Mark realizes that in order to stay relevant 24/7, he needs to utilize social media. He finds that he has a following with kids who play travel baseball and their parents. His satiric posts have an element to truth to them which makes them funny especially to those who live the travel baseball life.

JENNIFER BROXTERMAN

Join Wes on this episode as he chats with Jennifer Broxterman, a registered dietician and sports nutritionist about unhealthy relationships with food and how to undo that mindset and create a healthier one. 

Jennifer is also an Enlifted coach and CEO of two nutrition companies. First, she is the CEO of Nutrition RX which she founded in 2010.  She and a team of dieticians specialize in wellness, weight loss, and eating disorder recovery. Their clients are mostly athletes such as NHL players. Second, she is the CEO of a nutrition certification program that helps clients such as health coaches and fitness trainers get better educated on nutrition.

She and Wes discuss how doctors focus on BMI which is measured by weight and height and nothing else. It doesn't take into account body type or other factors. Jennifer explains that she uses a bod pod machine which is a sealed chamber that uses air displacement to measure the ratio of body fat vs muscle and other factors to determine a more accurate body fitness. She suggests doing this test twice a year in the winter and summer.

Jennifer uses the Iceberg of Success in nutrition. From top to bottom is willpower and knowledge above the waterline. Under the water are habits, environment, and mindset.  She tackles this from bottom to top. Mindset is the most important. One must start with a good mindset. She says it's important to be curious, be kind, and be honest. The next step, environment, is physical, social, and online influences. 

When most people mess up their nutrition, they have the mindset that since they messed up, they may as well just forget about getting back on track. Listen as she uses brushing teeth as an example of the ideal mindset when derailed by the path of nutrition. 

Jennifer says simplicity is the key to success. Also, it is best to focus on building healthy habits instead of the bad ones. When the focus is on the positive, people feel good and want to continue even if they mess up. She discusses the study of US vs Iceland, an interesting experiment on limiting use of drugs in teens. 

Having to unlearn certain coaching methods and learn new ones was challenging but worth it for Jennifer.  Learning the psychology of the relationship to food is the key to her success in coaching.
