We are not the source of what is true. We are not the authority in this world. We need the truth to renew our minds and show us where we are trying to be God.

It's that time again! Time for the festive Christmas episode with my special guest, Andy Hlushak. Today we are answering some of your Christmas questions and having a jolly good time too!
Merry Christmas! We had a lot of fun doing this show - laughing and remember Jesus in all things.
Here are some highlights:
Christmas LifehackAndy: use a staple gun and duct tape to wrap presents
Lauren: boil water, pour in a glass and then dump it out, then put glass over a refrigerated stick of butter to bring it to room temp in a minute (I think mine was the more helpful life hack ;)
Andy: O Holy Night and Joy to the World
Lauren: O Come O Come Emmanuel

Why is the birth of Christ celebrated on December 25th?The importance of celebrating Christ's birth is to celebrate it; the date doesn't matter because it doesn't get us closer to the Lord, prove our salvation, or determine when Jesus is coming back. The important part is to make Christ known and to use Christmas as a time of worship and proclamation!
What do we do with all the Santa stuff?Andy challenges us to not lie to our kids about the truth of Santa- it adds no value to their lives. Instead, share the great legacy of St. Nicolas and when we see a Santa rejoice in the symbol of generosity during Christmas!
What will you eat for Christmas breakfast?Andy: Sushi. (But not anymore hahaha)
Lauren: craving Panera Bread treats or homemade cinnamon rolls

The Cow Tongue The Lord's Perfect TimingThe inspiration for today’s episode comes from 2 Peter 3, my pastor’s sermon on Sunday, and the advent season.
Today’s take away is - THE LORD’S TIMING IS PERFECT
My timing is not so good.
But God’s timing - it’s always spot on. Perfect.
We can see it with the arrival of Christ! In Jeremiah - just like we talked about last week - at the right time God would send a Savior:
In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’ “For thus says the LORD: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.” Jeremiah 33:15-18
And Romans 5:6 tells us: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly."
God has a perspective and a wisdom and a knowledge and a Sovereignty that we don’t have!
The arrival of Christ came at just the right time.
His death came at just the right time.
His resurrection three days later came at just the right time.
And his second arrival will be at just the right time.

A guard brought her to the commandment’s office. “In this place, Mrs. Wurmbrand, he told her, “you must know that I am more powerful than God. Now— have you seen through the sham of religion? Have you realized in a communist society, you don’t need God anymore?” . “I see that you are powerful,” Sabrina answered, “and probably you have documents there about me that can decide my fate. But God keeps records, too, and neither you nor I would have life without Him. The Theology of GiftsCheck out Doug Wilson's sermon: A Theology of Gifts
What does the Bible have to say about gift giving? Why do we give gifts at Christmas? How much should we spend? How do I cultivate a biblical attitude about giving gifts?
These are questions that bounce around in my head around the Christmas season. Thankfully my husband pointed me to a Doug Wilson sermon that really infused me with a lot of joy and excitement about the WHY behind giving gifts.
Why Gifts at Christmas?1. We are celebrating Christ's birth!
2. We are remembering the gifts that the Wise Men gave to Jesus that represented His Kingship, His Divinity, and His death.
3. We give because God gives to us and it serves Christ.
Giving gifts is part of fulfilling the law of Christ (Mark 12). We love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, AND we love our neighbor as ourselves. Giving gifts is part of our sacrifice and service to the King. It is a reflection of God's love and generosity to us.

How do we give a defense for the hope that we have? Let’s start with a few questions that every person wrestles with in their lifetime. Who am I? Why am I here? What is wrong with the world? How can the wrong be made right? Today we are answering these questions from two vorldveiws: secular humanism and Christian theism and how relying on the Truth of God’s mercy helps us prove faithful.

Cultural ApologeticsThe word "apologetics" is scary to me. It feels like I'm not smart enough to even get near the topic. But we are called to give a "defense" or apologia, for the hope that we have, and with gentleness and respect.
Today is about answering four questions through two different worldview. We expose the issues with one and see the goodness of the other.
1. Who am I?
2. Why am I here?
3. What’s wrong with the world?
4. How can the wrong be made right?
Voddie Baucham addresses these in a talk that is EXCELLENT here:
https://vimeo.com/203890559
Secular Humanism:
Secular humanism is by definition "an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems." (Merrium Webster dictionary)
Christian Theism:
The belief that God is the Creator of the universe and reigns Supreme. We have rebelled against His holy law and are dead in our sins. We need a Savior to take the punishment for our transgressions, which came through Jesus Christ, God's only Son. Through Christ alone can our sins be forgiven and can we stand before the most Holy God without blemish.
Secular Humanism answers the four questions with humans being the solution to the problems. More government and more education are often the solutions they stand behind, but they do not work.
For example, the drug problem. Check out recidivism - rearrests for the same crime for drugs:
Recidivism is measured by criminal acts that resulted in rearrest, reconviction or return to prison with or without a new sentence during a three-year period following the prisoner's release.
Bureau of Justice Statistics studies have found high rates of recidivism among released prisoners. One study tracked 404,638 prisoners in 30 states after their release from prison in 2005.[1] The researchers found that:

Instructions:
God has given every Christian a calling: to go make disciples of all nations. Matthew 28:19-20
A disciple is a student or follower of Christ.
Discipleship isn't just about intellect or organization!
Sometimes there are obstacles to fulfilling our calling and it makes us reluctant to obey.
Today we looked at Ananias in Acts 9:10-25 and how we can be encouraged to GO even when it seems impossible, painful, intimidating, and unknown.
Five Hopes for the reluctant disciple-makerNO 1: Go anyway
We need to be obedient even when we don’t understand because WE CAN TRUST God!
NO 2: It's not about us.
God reminds Ananias that He is God and that God needs to be at the center of God’s universe.
“He is a chosen instrument of MINE”
NO 3: God has a greater purpose than we can see
When we are reluctant we need to remember that God has a great purpose especially when there is suffering. Because there will probably be suffering if you are following Jesus.
NO 4: Remember that God transforms hearts not us
There is no limit to God's power at work: within days Saul when from killing people who said Jesus was the Messiah to preachi

Reformation didn’t stop with the end of the 17th century. Every generation is prone to it’s own waywardness. Even the first century church struggled! Three Patterns of ReformationsNO 1: There is a deviation from God's Truth
1 John 2:15-17
NO 2: God is faithful. He raises us bold men and women who go back to the Truth of Scripture in order to know who God is, who we are, our condition, and how to be right with God.
1 Peter 1:17-21
NO 3: Suffering for standing up for Biblical truth
1 Peter 3:13-18
Examples of this pattern:
- Early Church - Stephen Acts 6,7
- 8th Century - Iconoclasm
- 16-17th Century - Reformation
Our Role in ReformationWe have a role in reforming were the church is erring.
We have a role of reforming in our own lives and homes.
The directive is the Word of God.
Ideas for our Role in ReformIn the Church:
In our own lives:
