In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to take some time to highlight some black authors whose books we absolutely love. We are always trying to read widely and diversify our reading list, but we can always do better. If you have suggestions for us, please send them our way!

This week we're talking about teens getting up to mischief to overthrow the system or enact their revenge. You know, regular teen stuff. But really, we love books that deal with this. Mischief, extreme pranks, elaborate plots, we want it all. However, this episode, we're not going to talk about heist books because we love them too much, so that's going to get its own episode.

It's time for another episode in our Catching Up series! This time, Kenzie reads the book she somehow missed: The Outsiders. We ended up talking about the way writing style and voice has changed in YA, and overall, reflecting on some really great timeless things about this book.

There are so many incredible books that come to mind when we think about unreliable narrators, and for this episode, we're focusing on narrators who can't accurately describe their experience because of past trauma or mental illness. This week we're talking about the newest novel from Tahereh Mafi, A Very Large Expanse of Sea. We were both completely blown away by the richness of Shirin's story and the unique setting of the novel. At its surface, it may seem like a simple first love story, but it's so, so much more than that and neither one of us have been able to stop thinking about it.

This week we're talking about fresh starts, characters leaving their old life behind to start a new one at a new school or in a new city. We love this trope and the journeys that these characters go on to discover which parts of themselves remain the same, no matter where they are.
