Fresh off of Top Gun (1986) & Best Picture winner Rain Man (1988) Tom Cruise goes Oscar hunting with his portrayal of Ron Kovics, a real-life Vietnam veteran who underwent significant emotional and physical turmoil as a result of his service. Cruise managed to earn his first nomination for Best Actor for this performance, and the real Ron Kovics was so moved he gave Cruise his own Bronze Star after seeing the film.
