There was a new Pastor who’d come to town. The town’s main industry was logging. Everything was fine for that pastor for a while, but then one day he was out walking and praying and he saw one of his Deacons. He was cutting the ends off of logs. The problem was, when a tree was felled they’d mark the cut ends to indicate which company it belonged to. Sometimes logs escaped booms from and would float off by themselves. There was a law that if you found a marked log, you had to bring it back and you’d receive a small “finder’s fee.” Logs were worth much more than the finder’s fee, so it was common practice for people who found these logs to cut off the end of the log and sell the log directly to the mill for a much greater price. This is what the pastor saw the Deacon doing. Next Sunday, he preached a sermon called, “The Sinister Side Of Stealing.” He didn’t mention anything specific, and he got positive feedback. Next week, he was out praying again, and he saw the Deacon doing the same thing. Next Sunday the sermon was called, “Stealing Will Send You To Hell.” Once again he got positive feedback. The next week, you guessed it, he was out praying and saw the same thing. That Sunday, the Pastor preached a sermon he called, “Cutting Off The Ends Of Logs and Selling It Back to the Mill Is A Sin.” By Monday morning, he was looking for a new Church to preach in.

The Scripture section is 2 Corinthians 5:1-5. God the Holy Spirit will minister into your life through it. “For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.”

As a culture, we fell in love with cars back when Henry Ford was selling his Model T. It’s been reported the “Model T’s” sales went with the slogan, “You can paint it any color, so long as it’s black.” That certainly isn’t the case now. At a certain point in automobile manufacturing and selling history, someone, somewhere, decided to create a new model every year. Sometimes, there is very little difference between the model years of the same vehicle. At other times there is a great deal of difference between the model years. The reason for the change in approach between then and the way things are today is to sell more cars. By design and clever marketing, new cars were designed to make old cars look obsolete and out of date … even though they may be completely the same under the skin. What’s happening is a combination of the idea of giving the customer what they want, but also work on creating a need. All in order to sell more cars.

The Holy Spirit of God is with you to help apply the truth from the Scripture section to your life. It’s from 2 Corinthians 6:8-10, “We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors. We are ignored, even though we are well known. We live close to death, but we are still alive. We have been beaten, but we have not been killed. Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.”

Fruitfulness is at the very heart of God’s purpose in creation. In his action of creating, God was in one sense being “fruitful” and “multiplying.” He created humans in his image and likeness and told us to be fruitful. As we go through the seasons of life, one thing that comes through very strongly and remarkably, is the cycle of birth, growth and death. Like begets like and it is only in “fruitfulness” that birds, bees, flowers and trees, fish in the seas, terrestrial animals, and humans continue to live and populate the earth. As a result, we should expect fruitfulness from our lives. When we expect fruitfulness we will always approach anything that we do in God with faith and anticipation.

The Holy Spirit will minister in your life the truth of the Scripture section. It’s from 2 Corinthians 6:3-7, “We live in such a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find fault with our ministry. In everything we do, we show that we are true ministers of God. We patiently endure troubles and hardships and calamities of every kind. We have been beaten, been put in prison, faced angry mobs, worked to exhaustion, endured sleepless nights, and gone without food. We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love. We faithfully preach the truth. God’s power is working in us. We use the weapons of righteousness in the right hand for attack and the left hand for defense.”

For the past 15 months, we’ve had many of our freedoms curtailed because of COVID. As an analogy, there are certain restrictions God puts on our lives and if we’re Christians, it’s important to be obedient to him. Those restrictions have to do with sin. However, we’ve missed the boat if we think that by adding to those restrictions, we’re more spiritual and pleasing to God. Doing this is legalism and it’s what the Pharisee’s did and Jesus put no credibility in it. Joe Aldrich has defined legalism this way, “Carefully building a pattern of living, and then trying to make it normative for everyone else.” The Pharisees and devout Jews thought that the Law of God was about sacrifices and festivals and clean and unclean things. But the Law is much more than that! It’s a change of heart. It’s a change of world view. It’s humbly receiving God’s grace. The problem with legalists is that they generally become proud of their “spiritual” accomplishments.

The Holy Spirit is going to speak and minister in your life as you read the Scripture section. It’s from 2 Corinthians 7:8-10, “I am not sorry that I sent that severe letter to you, though I was sorry at first, for I know it was painful to you for a little while. Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way. For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.”

A common erroneous belief about your emotions is that things that happen to you make you angry, or depressed, or anxious. Actually, it’s your interpretation, your thinking about those things that produces the emotions. How does this happen? I call it the “ The ABC’s Of Wrong Thinking.” “Actual” – An actual event happens. It can be positive, negative, or neutral. “Beliefs” – You respond to this event with certain beliefs and notions about the meaning of this event. “Consequences” – These follow in the form of emotions. The deal is, “If our thoughts control emotions, why do we choose to continue to think in distorted ways and trigger such torturous moods?” Isn’t it because our emotions can be so strong that we think they are irrefutable proof that our distorted thoughts must be right? “I feel guilty, so I must have done something wrong.” “I feel hopeless, so my problems must be unsolvable.” “I feel lonely, so I must be unlovable.” But what do your emotions prove? Only that you’re feeling them … and nothing else.

The Holy Spirit wants to minister into your life and emotions and will apply the Scripture section to your life. It’s from 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”

There’s a common event that’s occurred for thousands of years, in all kinds of cultures, that most people never give a second thought to. It’s a parade. How many of you love a parade? I enjoy parades, watching the clowns, the bands, the floats and looking to see if there’s anyone I know. We lived in a small community while my kids were young and one of the pluses of that experience was that my kids had the opportunity to participate in parades. There are many reasons for parades. They can celebrate the birthday of a country, or a province, or a town. They can declare things, like the yearly “March For Jesus.” They can protest and block traffic. They can celebrate victory, like those that celebrate a team that has won a Stanley Cup, or a Super-Bowl, or a World-Series. They can show off the military might of the nation. Whatever the reason for the parade, a lot of people just love them because they’re out there to see and be seen.

When you read the Scripture section, know that God the Holy Spirit will speak to you and apply it to your life. It’s from Proverbs 14:15-16, “Only simpletons believe everything they are told! The prudent carefully consider their steps. The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with great confidence.”

There are words that we use that we understand a certain way that have a much deeper and fuller meaning than the way we use them. For instance, take the word “Christ.” It’s a Greek word that hasn’t been translated into an English equivalent in our Bibles. Contrary to popular understanding, “Christ” isn’t Jesus’ second name. “Christos” is a Greek word that, translated, means “Anointed One.” In some of the over 550 times that the word Christos is used within the New Testament, it is used in the way that we use it all the time — as Jesus’ second name. However, in the vast majority of cases, instead of reading the word “Christ” when we are reading our Bibles, we ought to read “the anointed” or “the anointed one.”

God the Holy Spirit will work in your heart and life to bring the Scripture section to life. It’s from Matthew 16:13-16, “When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ ‘Well,’ they replied, ‘some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.’ Then he asked them, ‘But who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the [Christ], the Son of the living God.’”

One of the frustrations I live with as a Pastor is that I’ll be misunderstood. It’s very interesting to be in front of a group of people, or online, week after week and do my best to proclaim what God’s put on my heart. I know what I feel God wants me to say. I know that the folk who are at the Church (when we’re meeting together) or online want to be there. I know the Holy Spirit works in his way in each of our lives and that each of us will respond to each message differently, according to where we stand in our walk with the Lord and according to what our needs are at that particular time. It’s just that from time to time I’ll hear of a response to something I’ve preached or said that is really a misunderstanding or a mistake on the part of the hearer. I’ve actually heard of some who will justify some sin in their lives because they feel that in a message I justified it! Uh … no! No matter what I preach or write, please compare it to the Scriptures.

God the Holy Spirit is ready to minister in your life as you meditate on the Scripture section. It’s from 1 Peter 2:21-25, “For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.”

If your perspective as a follower of Jesus is that it’s all you can do to “just get by,” what do you think the results of that perspective will result in your life. Frankly, it’s likely you’re just going to “get by.” If your perspective is that you’re being defeated by circumstances, then that’s likely going to happen. A lot of these things are a matter of will and become self-fulfilling prophecies. And if we don’t “will” to get over the temporary circumstances that we find ourselves in, we won’t. There is much to be said for positive thinking. It changes our perspective. Yet positive thinking isn’t some magical formula that we speak to make our problems disappear. It’s just an attitude that helps … a lot. And its Biblical.

God the Holy Spirit is the one who ministers life changing truth to you. The Scripture section is 1 Peter 2:9-12, “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. ‘Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.’ Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.”

Since we all will die, a common question people ask of themselves is, “What can I leave behind as a legacy?” To be blunt the answer to that question is … nothing. I’ve mentioned this to the congregation at Delta Church before, but it’s a great thought experiment to do periodically. It’s this: very few people in history have ever left a legacy. In fact when you consider how many people have lived throughout history, over 99% of them are not remembered 100 years after their death. Since this is true, doesn’t it make sense to store up for yourselves treasures where they count, in Heaven, rather than here on earth? If you want to talk about legacy’s though, the only possible legacy that you’ll be able to have will be the lives that you’ve touched and whom God has changed as a result. Those are the heavenly treasures and the legacy God desires for you.

The Scripture section is from Proverbs 3:27-30. God the Holy Spirit will minister the spiritual and practical truth from it in your life. “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them. If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, ‘Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.’ Don’t plot harm against your neighbor, for those who live nearby trust you. Don’t pick a fight without reason, when no one has done you harm.”
