The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we humans interact with each other. Before 2020, there wasn’t widespread mask wearing. Most people weren’t “social distancing.” And we weren’t under “lock-downs.” All of those have forced us to miss out on things as we haven’t been able to gather together for weddings, funerals, Church Gatherings, and other group/crowd meetings. We’ve missed out on seeing families. When the pandemic is over, picture for a moment those first moments of a family reunion. The entire extended family is reunited— aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and others. They may come from around the country or even fly in from overseas. They have not seen each other in person for a very long time, so the hugs are warm and the greetings joyful. At last, they’re together again!

God the Holy Spirit will minister in your life as you open your heart to the Scripture section. It’s from Matthew 20:30-34, “As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ ‘Be quiet!’ the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, ‘What do you want me to do for you?” ‘Lord,’ they said, ‘we want to see!’ Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. How are you thankful? I know it’s not Thanksgiving. In Canada that happens in October, and it’s always a good reminder. But what about the rest of the year? How thankful are you on June 22, 2021? Some people are naturally thankful. Other’s have to work at it and come up with strategies to always keep being that way in the forefront of their thoughts. There are strategies you can develop like keeping a Gratitude Journal. In it you can write down the blessings God’s given you, whether large or small. And then, when you need a “pick me up,” you can take it and read all of those times when you were blessed and thankful. Then you can be thankful again for each circumstance and you can double up on that thanksgiving for the big picture of God’s faithfulness in your life.

The Holy Spirit of God will inspire you with the words of the Scripture section. It’s from Matthew 20:24-28, “When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. But Jesus called them together and said, ‘You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.’”

Most people associate success with accumulating wealth or prestige. But sometimes you hear stories about the opposite. One woman had a different type of dream. After years of being unhappy in her high-pressure, prestigious government job, she sold her suburban home and moved to the country. Her ambition was to open a farm stand. For her, living a quieter, simpler life held the greatest reward. There is nothing wrong with that, and in some ways, it’s very appealing. The New Testament encourages followers of Jesus to live a quiet life. What does that mean? A “quiet life” doesn’t necessarily mean moving to the country and opening a farm stand. It can be described as taking care of one’s own responsibilities, as opposed to meddling in the affairs of others. It means being peaceable and respectful of others, not someone who stirs up trouble.

The Holy Spirit of God has your best interests in mind and he’ll minister to your life with the Scripture section from Matthew 22:15-21, “Then the Pharisees met together to plot how to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested. They sent some of their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod, to meet with him. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘we know how honest you are. You teach the way of God truthfully. You are impartial and don’t play favorites. Now tell us what you think about this: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’ But Jesus knew their evil motives. ‘You hypocrites!’ he said. ‘Why are you trying to trap me? Here, show me the coin used for the tax.’ When they handed him a Roman coin, he asked, ‘Whose picture and title are stamped on it?’ ‘Caesar’s,’ they replied. ‘Well, then,’ he said, ‘give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.’”

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is known as the “City of Brotherly Love.” That’s because the motto references the Greek word “phileo” which means “brotherly love” or the love between friends. Jesus’ followers revolutionized the way this term was used. In the Apostle Paul’s time, the word was used only to reference actual family relationships. New Testament Christians began to address each other with the familial terms “brother” or “sister” when it wasn’t literally true. And that changed everything. Loving one another is an essential part of following Jesus in a life of discipleship.

God the Holy Spirit will minister in your spirit through the Scripture section. It’s from Matthew 22:34–40, “But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?’ Jesus replied, ‘”You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.’”

A habit is any activity that a person repeats compulsively and can have either positive or negative consequences to a person’s whole life. Pastor Jeff Seaman writes, “Some people are slaves to work, some people are slaves to jealousy, and some people are slaves to gossip, some people are slaves to people’s opinions.” One thing to note is that habitual activities usually affect a person’s well being. For many who’ve started smoking, the end can be cancer and death. But there are good habits as well.
For instance, some habits are good things to have. In New Year’s 2012 I decided that if I was going to get serious about exercising, I chose not to do it around New Year’s because I felt like I needed to separate it from the whole New Year’s Resolution thing. It’s now been over 9 years of consistently adding more exercise into my weekly routine and I’m better off for it.

The Holy Spirit will minister to your life and apply the Scripture section from Mark 12:41-44, “Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.’”

Some people think that ministry means standing in a pulpit and preaching. But ministry is way more than that. I think a good definition of ministry is that it’s demonstrating God’s love to others by listening to them and God and through his wisdom and anointing, helping in the name of Jesus Christ. It was Jesus who said, “love your neighbor as yourself,” and so our motivation to be the Church is the commandment of Jesus. In that way, each time you reach out in love to others in Jesus’ name, you’re ministering to them. Let’s take Jesus up on his commandment and connect with our family, friends, and neighbourhood and in Jesus’ name and with the infilling and power of the Holy Spirit minister to all kinds of needs: spiritual, emotional, relational and physical. Jesus said that even a cup of cold water given in his name is considered ministry on his behalf and wouldn’t go unrewarded.

The Holy Spirit will speak to your life through the Scripture section. It’s from mark 12:28-31, “One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’ Jesus replied, ‘The most important commandment is this: “Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.”‘ The second is equally important: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” No other commandment is greater than these.’”

If you were to write a tweet describing yourself, what would you say? Tweets are interesting because they’re so brief. They used to be limited to140 characters, but in the last couple of years that’s been increased to 280. But think about it. How would you encapsulate your life in 280 characters? Not words … characters! Tweets force the writer to use as few words as possible to get their message across … whatever that message is. I think using fewer words is a good practice (and not because I tend to be a quiet person by nature). There’s less of an opportunity to be misunderstood if your words are fewer.

This Scripture section is from 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. Be open to what God the Holy Spirit wants to touch your life with. “So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

There have been a host of ideas about what humankind’s greatest problem is. Freud suggested it’s a conflict between the Super-ego and the Id. Just about every special interest group says it’s a lack of education. New Agers tell us we don’t realize that we’re “god’s.” The Bible tells us humans were created by God in the beginning for relationship with him and each other. Sin destroyed those relationships. Adam and Eve hid from God because of nakedness and God took care of the situation by clothing them, but ever since, humans have been “naked” before God and out of relationship with him because of sin. Humans haven’t been able to bridge that gap on our own. We need God to do the bridge building … and he has.

The Scripture section the Holy Spirit will minister to you through is 2 Corinthians 3:13-18, “We are not like Moses, who put a veil over his face so the people of Israel would not see the glory, even though it was destined to fade away. But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ. Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand. But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”

When God thinks about you (and he does) what do you think that his thoughts about you are? Do you think he thinks he made a mistake in creating you or that you’re worthless? Biblical truth is that humanity is redeemable and even unredeemed humans are loved and cared for by God. He yearns for a deep and rich relationship with you. He wants to be your friend. God loves you so intensely that He willingly gave up Jesus to die for your sins. The consistent witness of Scripture is that not a single one of us is a mistake.

God the Holy Spirit is ready to minister in your heart and life with the Scripture section. It’s from 2 Corinthians 1:3-7, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer. We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.”

I think that one of them might be “character.” The question that needs to be answered when assessing character is, “Who are you when no one else is watching?” There are many who are focused on their reputation, but not their character. “Reputation” is what others think you are; “character” is who God knows you are. But “character” can’t hide. It shows up in what you do and say, but it also shows up in the “characters” of the messages you send on our computers and cell phones. By default, followers of Jesus make character their focus and ask the question, “How do I develop God’s character within my living?”

The Scripture section is 2 Corinthians 2:14-16. The Holy Spirit is ready to speak into your life and minister to you. “But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this?”
