Someone did a study of how businesses work and surveyed customers who left one business to deal with a competitor. I think that you will find the results interesting.

• 1 percent had died.
• 3 percent had moved away.
• 5 percent left because of friendships or other loyalties.
• 9 percent were drawn away by competition.
• 14 percent left because the business’s product had become substandard.
• 68 percent left because of the crummy attitude of the company’s employees!
• Customers stopped patronizing this business because they were treated rudely or indifferently by the employees.

Almost 70 percent of people stopped using the business because of the attitudes of the employees! I think that the principle can also be applied to your life of following Jesus. How does your life and attitudes (in-person and online) reflect Jesus?

God the Holy Spirit is at work in your life, making you more like Jesus. He’ll take the Scripture section and apply it to your heart. It’s from Proverbs 3:21-24, “My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly.”

I don’t know too much about designing a bridge. Engineers however, are trained to understand that when they are asked to design a bridge that will cross a gorge, they need to design it to withstand all of the stresses they can imagine. If they don’t then the bridge would fall. Stresses like gravity, wind, earth movement, hot, cold, earthquakes are all thought about and they have mathematical equations assisting them in determining whether or not the design will work at that particular place. They also have a design in mind which will be pleasant to look at. Yet, even after they have run through the mathematics of it, many of them will build a scale model and run through simulations to determine whether the bridge will meet the stresses it will face. It is the same way with your Christian life. God is busy working with you. He’s designed us to go through incredible stress. And he’s with you as you do.

The Scripture section is from Proverbs 3:13-18. God the Holy Spirit’s going to touch your life with the spiritual truth from it. “Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. She offers you long life in her right hand, and riches and honor in her left. She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly.”

Life sure is complicated nowadays. Technology has increased the ability to do things at such a fast speed that sometimes our heads are left spinning. The pandemic has only exacerbated things. In some ways life isn’t as complicated, but for many of us we’re learning lots of new things we probably didn’t want to learn. But in the normal rhythms of life, jobs change, situations change, ways of doing things change, things change, and at times we feel like we don’t have any control. Some of us are dealing with our pasts and the things that have occurred to us we had no control of then affect who we are today and how we view life. Maybe you have young kids, who are constantly looking for your attention. In the middle of all of it, you can feel that you just don’t seem to have enough time. You’re not alone in that feeling.

God the Holy Spirit will minister his grace into your life as you meditate on the Scripture section. It’s from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. It’s Spring and in the past week I’ve done a bit of “Spring cleaning.” A week ago I decided to tackle our garage that had a lot of “junk” in it that we were never, ever going to use again. Stuff from when my kids were young (all 4 of them have been on their own for quite a long time). It felt good to be “dejunking” and finding more space. Then this week because of the changing pandemic situation, I have returned to my normal office hours at the Church. I decided to do the same thing in my office and so now I’ve dumped papers, boxes, and old technology that was just sitting around and gathering dust. Again, it felt good to be “dejunking” and finding more space. By analogy, sometimes you need to “dejunk” your life and do things differently moving forward. If that’s something overdue, ask God about what needs to go … and what needs to stay.

The Holy Spirit is in you to speak to your heart about applying the Scripture section to your life. It’s from Proverbs 3:5-8, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.”

Have you ever thought about how you classify people? Sometimes I’m struck by how wrong I am. It’s so easy in the business of our lives to look at family and friends and make decisions about who they are and what they’re like based on their outward appearance. I’m glad that God doesn’t do that. He knows who you are and he likes you. I’ve found that people are often a lot deeper than they first appear to be. You may be making a “mess” of your life, with dysfunction, broken relationships, addictions, battles with personal demons … OR, you may appear to have it “all together,” big bank account and things, great family, bright future.The point is that I’ve found in most cases, those things don’t really matter. There’s God-created dignity in everyone and everyone has emotions and thoughts that are worthy of listening to.

The Scripture section is from John 6:35-40. The Holy Spirit is with you to make the truth of it real in your life. “Jesus replied, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.’”

“Drive!” That word describes an impulse that’s different from needs. Drive has to do with motivation. It’s part of the answer to the question of why you do the things you do. Drive helps you to figure out what causes you to act certain ways, say certain things, live certain ways. There’s lots of different drives that cause us to do things. When you were a kid, you did things that your parents asked because you felt the need for their approval. Or conversely, you felt the fear of punishment if you didn’t. At a foundational level, obedience equals love. Those of us who are older often do things because we “like the chase.” We chase money or position or power or a life’s partner or success or security. Along the way when we finish something, we’ll often have a sense of accomplishment and that adds to the satisfaction of the chase.

Be open in your life to the work of the Holy Spirit using the Scripture section and applying it. It’s from John 6:27-29, “‘But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.’ They replied, ‘We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?’ Jesus told them, ‘This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.’”

Bill Bright told this story about prayer. A man traveled to a certain city one cold morning. As he arrived at his hotel, he noticed that the clerks, the guests, everyone, was barefoot. In the Coffee Shop, he noticed a fellow at a nearby table and asked, “Why aren’t you wearing shoes? Don’t you know about shoes?” “Of course, I know about shoes,” the patron replied. “Then why don’t you wear them?” the visitor asked. “Ah, that is the question,” the patron said, “Why don’t I wear shoes?” After breakfast, the visitor walked out of the hotel and into the snow. Again, every person he saw was barefoot. Curious, he asked a passerby, “Why doesn’t anyone here wear shoes? Don’t you know they protect the feet from cold?” The passerby said, “We know about shoes. See that building? It’s a shoe factory. We’re so proud of the plant that we gather there every week to hear the man in charge tell us how wonderful shoes are.” “Then why don’t you wear shoes?” the visitor persisted. “Ah, that is the question,” the passerby replied, “Why don’t we wear shoes?” Bright says, “when it comes to prayer, many Christians are like the people in that city. They know about prayer, they believe in its power, they frequently hear sermons on the subject, but it is not a vital part of their lives.”

The Scripture section is from John 5:39-44, “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. Your approval means nothing to me, because I know you don’t have God’s love within you. For I have come to you in my Father’s name, and you have rejected me. Yet if others come in their own name, you gladly welcome them. No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God.”

There’s a story that Michelangelo was pushing a heavy rock up a small incline to his work area so that he could do some sculpting. A neighbour watched him for a long time as he worked to get this rock in place. Finally he asked, “Michelangelo, why do you labor so hard over that ugly, heavy piece of rock?” Michelangelo answered, “Because there is an angel inside that wants to come out.” That’s the purpose of your praying for others. You pray that love will flourish in their heart and life, so that “the angel inside can come out.” If you haven’t been praying with that kind of motivation, now is as good a time as any to begin to do so.

The Holy Spirit is with you and by his grace will minister in your life as you meditate on the Scripture section from John 5:25-29, “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son. And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man. Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son, and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.”

Here’s a cute story I came across in Preaching Today. Two old guys were walking along the shoreline of a lake when a frog came hopping up to them. Creaking with age, one of the old-timers slowly bent down and scooped up the frog in his hands. As he stood there gazing at the frog, fascinated by its ugliness, the frog croaked, “Hey, mister! I’m not really a frog. If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess who will do anything your heart desires.” Startled, the old man slipped the frog into his pocket and headed on down the shoreline. For a while the two continued on in silence until finally his buddy blurted out, “Well? You gonna kiss it?” “Naw, I guess not,” the first man replied. “At my age, I think I’ll have more fun with a talking frog.”

The Scripture section is from John 5:22-24. Ask the Holy Spirit to minister the truth of it to your life. “In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge, so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him. I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”

Worship means to ascribe ultimate value to something (person, thing, idea), and then to revere, to adore, to pay homage to, and to obey by ordering the priorities of your life around that which you worship. Worship then, is about what you value and what your priorities are. When it comes to worship of God, for many, the method is very important. But Jesus would say that for acceptable worship to happen, the method is not as important as the heart of the worshipper.

God the Holy Spirit will speak in your life through the Scripture section. It’s from John 5:19-21, “So Jesus explained, ‘I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished. For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.'”
