In episode 9 of Sheriff Fortney's podcast, hear from Cold Case Detective Jim Scharf on his 38-year career with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. In 2018, Det. Scharf was ready for retirement when a new technology, Investigative Genetic Genealogy, cracked open a whole new way to solve decades old cold cases. Detective Scharf made an arrest in 2018 for a 1987 double-homicide; it went to trial in 2019 and was the first conviction in the world using Investigative Genetic Genealogy.

In episode 6, Sheriff Fortney talks with Jose "Neaners" Garcia and Tairyn "TT" with Hope for Homies in Everett. Their non-profit organization creates a safe place for youth in Snohomish County to grown, learn and build life skills. They partner with youth in gang affected communities and with juveniles in the justice system to help mentor and provide a safe place for growth. Hope for Homies also assists adults with developing success plans and re-entry support as they leave prison and re-enter daily life. In episode 5, Sheriff Adam Fortney talks with Lt. Rebecca Lewis about a life changing incident that happened to her while working patrol on December 2, 2006. Listen in to hear more about how she overcame what happened and challenged herself to grow in many new ways following that traumatic night.

This week, Sheriff Fortney will kickoff the second LEAD The Way program for youth. He created the program in 2021 for Snohomish County youth who may be involved in the criminal justice system or at a crossroads in their life, the program’s classes are rooted in life skills, decision making, accountability and leadership. In June 2020, Sheriff Fortney met Chris Anderson and Jordan Jeffries of America’s Promise Project (APP). Over the last 18 months, they have worked to develop new ways to build trust and bridge the gap between law enforcement and communities of color in Snohomish County. Throughout this year, APP will take a deeper look into the behind the scenes operations of the Sheriff’s Office as they strive to bring important information to our communities through a racial equity lens.
