Shining a Light on Colin Stetson composer for the new movie The Menu starring Ralph Fiennes

Listen Later

Meet musician Colin Stetson the composer for the new movie "The Menu", starring Ralph Fiennes. Stetson masters the art of melding his multi-instrument mastery into one incredible score. Colin talks all things business and being a music maestro.

The score for The Menu is an evolution from any other score Stetson has done in the past. The string-forward and percussive music uses grotesque soundscapes and motifs to mirror the psychosis of the main character (Ralph Fiennes).

As the narrative builds, Stetson creates unique musical moments, some given only at a specific time and place, and others that weave a thread throughout the film. Rather than creating character themes, he created a theme for the menu that interacts with characters, giving the menu a sense of self; an off-kilter pretension that instigates discomfort in the listener.

The film’s concept allowed Stetson to use eccentric and experimental instrumentation: playing glasses with chopsticks, hitting tuning forks on Tibetan bowls, using pans as percussion; making the score fit the environment while keeping it separate from the diegetic sounds of the kitchen. He uses his own undulus vocals which clone the full orchestra of strings.

“From my first reading of the script to our last moments on the mix stage, my experience creating the music on this film has been an absolute joy, as the themes, refrains, and aesthetic have seemed to jump right off of the page and screen for me with every brilliant turn of phrase, perfect edit, and wickedly delivered performance. It is pure pleasure working with such an incredible team and I am truly grateful for the whole of it,” says Stetson.

A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.
