In episode 139 you meet Giovanni Colotto, Managing Director, De Poli Tankers BV, a 32-year-old Italian who lives in the Netherlands nowadays. Giovanni wrote me an email asking to become a guest since he wanted to contribute with his knowledge and is ambitious to be part of the change the maritime industry needs.
We discussed a lot about change, NextGen, diversity, visibility, sustainability and leadership, the things I find most interesting to discuss. What are your views on these topics? Do you agree with Giovanni?
Giovanni mentioned the De Poli Tankers page on LinkedIn, here is the link to that if you want some inspiration.
We are in a pandemic and need to be persistent and patient, but we also have to start adjusting to the new reality that will emerge when the time of isolation is over, and that is what I wanted to talk to you about today.
I have been through changes earlier in my life, it's tough and challenging but can be very rewarding once you get through it.
The corona pandemic has meant that the Shipping Podcast also has gone through some changes (just like the rest of the world); new equipment, new ways of recruiting guests but most of all how to conduct interviews. I share the thoughts behind the decisions taken to continue to deliver new episodes to the loyal listeners of the Shipping Podcast.
In this episode, I also share the feedback received lately, you will hear that I get emails from all corners of the world and what kinds of requests they send.
I hope you enjoy this solo episode, which is supposed to be a shout-out from me to you to hang in there and use the time given wisely. Stay safe.
You are always welcome to reach out to me, I am @lenagothberg in most social channels, but you can also send an email to [email protected] and let me know what's on your mind.
Thank you for listening!

Listen to Sakura Kuma who has a holistic view of the port. She has worked as a terminal operator, business developer, landlord, port investments and she thinks that being able to walk in someone else's shoes makes you more understanding of different perspectives. Sakura works with marketing & sales right now but her mind is geared towards CSR and how to become a responsible port contributing to the future development of the maritime industry.
Sakura gives tips on a book to read now called Upheaval: Turning Points for Nations in Crisis, which we discuss in the episode.
Do you think that Sakura is a superstar? I think so but I am waiting for your feedback on this episode, what do you think?
I am @lenagothberg in almost all channels, let's continue the conversation. Thank you for listening.
In episode #136 you meet Katy Ware, Director of Maritime and Safety standards at the Maritime Coastguard Agency and a Permanent Representative of the UK to the IMO, a power woman who is working very hard to support the maritime industry in the pandemic crises. Katy is concerned about the seafarers around the world, the cruise industry and how the shipping industry will rise again after the pandemic but she is also optimistic in saying that the window of opportunity is open and now is the time to put all the previous initiatives that were discussed for such a long time into action.
Listen to Katy and hear the comfort of which she says that the world needs shipping, we will come out of these crises an even stronger industry.
Listen to Katy and give me a shoutout, I love feedback! I am @lenagothberg in most online media and I am waiting to hear from you.
Please accept my apologies for this late release of the 135th episode of the Shipping Podcast. There are so many things to take care of during this pandemic and I was caught a little bit off guard with how to proceed with the interviews.
Last week I was fortunate to get hold of Sarah Brennan, Lieutenant Commander of the US Coast Guard, who was kind enough to jump on a Zoom call with me and talk about what it's like to be a maritime investigator and how many cool jobs she has had within the Coast Guard. We also speak about diversity, of course.
Listen to Sarah and then give us a shout-out. I am @lenagothberg in most social channels and Sarah is @SarahEBrennan09
Thank you for listening!

Episode 134 - in spite of the Coronavirus.
This episode is recorded online, so the sound quality is not as exceptionally good as usual. On the other hand, you get to listen to a young Master Mariner who is now stuck on his vessels since the pandemic is causing trouble with crew change. No one can leave the ship and no one can come on board, the entire ship is a quarantine. How does it feel? What do you do? What are you longing for the most and how do you keep up?
Thank you for listening, please keep the seafarers in mind, they are usually out of sight, but they are the ones keeping the maritime part of the global supply chain running.
I love feedback! Please send it to me at [email protected] or comment on the website www.shippingpodcast.com or tag me in social media, I am @lenagothberg almost everywhere.
In this episode, you meet Roger Göthberg, Managing Director, MAN Energy Solutions Sverige AB, who is taking us through his career as a supplier to the maritime industry where most of his decisions are about how we can move towards a carbon-free shipping industry.
Roger believe in teamwork, he showed me a small sign on his desk (you can see it on the Instagram account of the Shipping Podcast, where it says Passion + Energy + Competence & Curiosity = Teamwork = Victory. I think it's great!
At the end of the episode, I refer to the email I received to [email protected] from Dylan who is a student at the Oxford University and became inspired by my interview with Mikael Lind about Port CDM, so he and his friends decided to enter a technical competition - and they won!!
Read the article and pay it forward, these guys got interested in the shipping industry because I decided to start the Shipping Podcast!!
Thank you for listening. Now go tell someone about the podcast!
Meet Jorgen Karlsson, Head of ABB Marine Sweden, with a background from building cars, flying helicopters, working with trains and then robotics, we have an interesting conversation about the exciting time the maritime industry is experiencing right now with the alternative fuels, digitalisation and autonomous vessels.
We talk about the technical side of the change we are in now and why it's so important to support it and tell the world about it.
Battery fuelled ferries, remote supported machine rooms, standardised equipment on the bridge - where are we on the route towards the industry revolution 4.0?
What do you think of our conversation? Give me a shout-out in social media, I am @lenagothberg almost everywhere, or drop me a line [email protected] and tell me.
Thank you for listening.

It's changing the format - it's a solo episode by Lena Gothberg about being a podcast producer in the maritime industry.
I speak about why I started the Shipping Podcast almost 5 years ago and what I have learned during the journey. It's so important that we as an industry take it seriously how we can compete about the best talent out there and the only way forward is a joint project aiming at raising the profile of the maritime industry. We need to hang out where the #nextgen are and we cannot do it ad hoc or isolated, we need to do it together.
I share some feedback that I have received, both on how we get people outside our bubble to listen to us but also why it is so important how we express ourselves, I included.
What do you think about me delivering a solo episode? Do you want more of that? Who do you want to listen to in the future?
Please let me know, my email address is [email protected]
Thank you for listening!

Meet Christopher Pålsson, Head of Lloyd's List Intelligence Consulting speaking about the geography behind trade, geographical hotspots, the International Maritime Statistics Forum and what life is as a Maritime Analyst.
We chat about world trade, raising the profile, containerisation and the economy of scale before we touch upon the topic of Brexit.
What do you think? Did you learn anything? Do you have a different opinion on what Chris is saying? send us some feedback, we might have another cup of coffee if you do.
Thank you for listening and spreading the word about the Shipping Podcast - I am forever grateful.
