Meet Mayte Medina, Chair of the IMO HTW Sub-committee, (Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping) representing the US Coast Guard at IMO.
Mayte was born and raised in Panama and dreamt of becoming a Panama Canal Pilot as a little girl. She ended up working for the Panama Administration for 7 years after she graduated from Kings Point and sailed for a couple of years. Mayte has been working in the development and implementation of domestic and international maritime safety, security and environmental protection standards since 1990.
Happy New Year 2020!
We are kicking off the new decade with Fran Collins, Chief Executive Officer, Red Funnel. Fran has a dual license and has trained to become both a Master Mariner and a Chief Engineer, however, the life on the Bridge seems to interest her more.
What Fran is sharing with us is music to my ears. We speak about what impact connectivity has had on life onboard, how people now know what they are missing at home and how that can be a double sword. Fran brings up the culture change that the maritime industry needs to become more attractive to the young generation and how important it is to have role models.
I am interested in hearing your view, what do you think about this episode, the 128th? I am all ears at @lenagothberg in most channels. And hey, help spread the word! That's a nice gesture for someone you care about.
Thank you for listening!
Thank you for listening to the Shipping Podcast during 2019!
Thank you to the 26 guests that appeared in the Shipping Podcast during 2019! Excellent, maritime professionals who shared their knowledge and gave us the opportunity to learn from them, I know I did.
I have dived into the statistics around the Shipping Podcast and I am sharing them with you, you get to know which episodes are the most downloaded and how many downloads this podcast have had during the 4,5 years it has been running.
But I also have a question for you, please send me your view, I need to hear from you. I am at [email protected]
Happy New Year! 2020 looks promising, let's hope it stays like that.
In episode 127 you meet Mikael Laurin, Managing Director, Lean Marine, a company dedicated to automated-fuel saving and data analysis solutions. Mikael comes from a shipping company where he served as the CEO after a career as a consultant for various companies, start-ups and large entities.
Mikael shares his view on the current market, where he thinks our industry is heading, but he also speaks about when his heritage called him to be part of the family-owned shipping company. He welcomes the regulations IMO 2020 but thinks we will be under-whelmed compared to the expectations.
What is your view of what Mikael speaks about? I am all ears, give me a shout-out in social media or comment on the website www.wshippingpodcast.com
Thank you for listening and a Happy New Year!
Nicola Good, a maritime communicator, used to work as a maritime journalist for some 20 years but have now swopped to be the Head of Brand and External Relations at Lloyd's Register Marine & Offshore department. What is the difference?
How do we become more visible to the general public, how many times have you heard me put that question to my guest? A hundred? Well, Nicola is actually able to give some good advice and she is also coming up with some explanations on why we are stuck where we are.
Diversity, how do we get from the current discussion, which seems to be somewhat unbalanced and only interesting to women (?) to a visionary, interesting roadmap to the future? We talk about that too in this, the 126th episode of the Shipping Podcast.
I want to hear from you! Drop me a line at [email protected] and tell me what to put on that roadmap. I am waiting for your advice.
Thank you for listening, this episode is so good, you are allowed to gossip about it to your friends, so they also can enjoy the conversation between two maritime communicators!
In episode 125 you meet Elda Kazara Belja, Lecturer and Admissions Officer at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute, IMLI
IMLI's overall mission is to help build the legal capacity among IMO member states, particularly developing states, to fulfil their obligations under the IMO treaties.
This interview was made June 25th, at the IMO in London and the next day IMLI was celebrating its 30th anniversary which Elda talks about in the episode.
It's impressive that more than 1000 students from 146 states and territories have pursued studies at IMLI in Malta but if Elda is the first person they meet upon arrival, I am sure they all want to stay and experience her positivism and passion.
What do you think? Drop me an email at [email protected] with your thoughts.
Thank you for listening.
In episode 124 you meet the Project Manager for the Functional Review at the International Maritime Organization, Mads Svendsen, and can hear him describe how he has worked with 20 different UN organisations before arriving at the IMO almost a year ago.
The first 6 months Mads spent to try and understand the culture and find out where the organisation want to go before launching a series of workshops and then move on to the strategy. It's an exciting project and the end goal is a goal-based organisation.
I found it very interesting to chat with Mads, I hope you feel the same. If you have any questions or comments, please use @lenagothberg in all digital media. I am curious about your view.
Last, but not the least, here is the link to episode 98 with Peter Thomsen, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean who I met in Copenhagen last year.
Thank you for listening, here is a link to the article I mention in the episode.
In this the 3/4 episodes with people employed by the International Maritime Organisation, IMO, you meet Karine Langlois, Communications Officer for @IMOHQ the UN agency for Maritime Affairs, who speaks about target groups, message to the public about the maritime industry and raising the profile of our industry.
Karine is from Canada but is working for IMO in London, she is the producer and the video photographer for the videos coming out from the IMO. Please have a look at Turning the tide - there are 3 videos out now.
Thank you for listening, please give me your feedback - I am @lenagothberg in all media.
When visiting the IMO during the Day of the Seafarer in June, I had the opportunity to sit down with a few people at the IMO to discuss the organisation and where it is headed. In episode 122 you will hear Frederick J. Kenney, Director, Legal and External Affairs talking about the International Maritime Organization.
If you are interested in the Adopt a Ship programme or the IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador scheme or the Greenwich Maritime Museum here are the links.
I sum up my impressions from the London International Shipping Week 2019 at the end of this episode. Where you there? What do you think? Please let me know, I am @lenagothberg in most channels or drop me a line at [email protected]
Thank you for listening.
Lena
In episode 121 you meet Linda Ryan, Director Administrative Division, International Maritime Organisation, IMO, who is the first of four episodes recorded with people "inside the IMO", explaining the important work that is being done in this UN Body.
Linda speaks about the "Functional review" that is going on within IMO, that is a "change" project aiming to make the organisation more effective and relevant to the maritime industry. "Young IMO" is something that I never knew existed but makes me very happy to hear about.
We discuss who is deciding the theme for the year within IMO, and I get the opportunity to express my gratitude for the theme this year "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community" but also my concern for what will happen once the year is over?
What do you think? Is the IMO doing what you thought they were doing or are there some more questions that you wonder about?
I love feedback, please give me some, I am @lenagothberg in most channels.
Thank you for listening!
