Helén Jansson is the mastermind behind the Zero Vision Tool platform, aiming at a vision of a maritime industry without negative impact on air and water. She is also the former project leader for the Baltic Sea Position and several other projects.

Helén enjoys working with people, she is a strategist and she is really good at wording ideas into a message other people can understand and take onboard.

The ZVT project is somewhat hard to understand at a glance, therefore we have gathered some links here:

    Organisation

    White Paper

    EU projects

Helen also mentions Sustainable Shipping Initiative, SSI and Royal & Sun Alliance, RSA, where we used to work together.

  • 009 Per Erling Evensen, former Marketing Manager, Destination Gotland

Per Erling Evensen just retired from the duty as Marketing Manager at Destination Gotland and has left for an around the world sailing tour for the coming years. Prior to him leaving, he took the time for a chat about how the concept of Destination Gotland was developed and what that has meant to the people of Gotland.

Per Erling found himself employed by a Shipowner, Rederi AB Gotland, in 1997, when the tourist company he work for was bought. He thinks the journey he has made since then has been fantastic and is thankful for being given the chance to make change possible!

If you live on an island like Gotland, the ferry is under the skin of each and every citizen as 85 % of everyone is travelling by sea. If you move to an island you ask yourself; is it worth it? How can I run my business from the island? The ferry to and from the island is essential and it is important that the inhabitants, the ferry company and the politicians realise that and work together.

Per Erling speaks about the Passenger Shipping Association, you find more information about that here PSA and this is the link to Per Erlings' blog Nerthusbloggen. You can also reach Per Erling on Twitter @PE_Evensen

  • 008 David Kristensson, CEO Northern Offshore Services

Meet David Kristensson, CEO Northern Offshore Services and a shipping entrepreneur. David is born and raised on the island of Donsö, in the archipelago outside Gothenburg, which is a centre for tanker shipping in Sweden. Donsö has app. 1,400 inhabitants, 8 shipowning companies controlling 35 tankers in various sizes, trading North European waters.

David is a Master Mariner and an Engineer. He grew up on and around ships and started his career as shipowner with a tanker vessel. Then he was asked by a friend to contribute with his knowledge to an offshore wind vessel, which gave him the idea to develop the concept of the high-speed catamarans that is the business today.

Just to realise that the wind offshore industry needed to transport crew and equipment out to the wind farms is one thing, but to bring the concept to the next level, like getting the people being transported to feel comfortable, to find solutions before the demand is there, that is something else.

One of Northern Offshore Services is Siemens Offshore Wind Power Solutions, who obviously has been very content with their co-operation. When David describes the work they do, how the transported people enjoy the ride with them and what skills is needed from the seamen onboard the vessel, it becomes obvious that this is a new segment for the traditional shipping industry. The fleet of Northern Offshore Services now includes 19 vessels.

You can follow David on @JDAKristensson on Twitter and you can see a film of the vessels operated here and an interview with David from the Donsö Shipping Meet 2015 here. Another thing we talk about in the podcast is Prince Daniel's Fellowship, please follow this link to find out more about that.

  • 007 Håkan Svensson, CEO and Owner of Aston Harald

Håkan Svensson is a shipping entrepreneur. He grew up in the shipping industry as his father worked for Kamewa and moved to Singapore with his family when Håkan was a young boy.

Shipping propellers has been dominating Håkans life at least for the last 14 years, when he and his father bought the bankrupt's estate of Bergs Propulsion and developed it into a thriving business with a 25 % market share.

Håkan shares his view on what it means to be a business owner, an innovator and a manager of a shipping supply company on the global arena. He explains the huge consolidation going on among the maritime engine manufacturers, what it means for the shipping industry to be a part of the connected society and how that will attract young people to the industry.

Håkan describes the 2008 financial crisis as "walking the plank and not knowing how far you will fall at the end of it, 2 meters or 2 kilometres", and how his father was the anchor with courage and patience to wait for the upturn.

Håkans' call to the entire shipping industry is to be cooler! He practice what he preaches and is now totally into sailing, where he is promoting his carbon fibre factory through his company's' acquisition of the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) and the manufacturing of the M32 racing catamaran and the organisation of the M32 Series.

If you like the episode with Håkan Svensson, please give us a review on iTunes; that would really be helpful on our way to the top-ten-list with the Shipping Podcast.
