  • Why Downsized Motors Are Failing Faster and Why Missourians Are Keeping Cars Longer Than Ever

  • From the Secret War to Building Communities in Missouri

The Vietnam War left a lasting impact far beyond Southeast Asia. One of the lesser-known stories is that of the Hmong people, an ethnic group that fought alongside American forces during what became known as the "Secret War" in Laos. After the war, many Hmong families were forced to flee their homeland, eventually settling in communities across the United States, including Missouri.

Doug Genens with the State Historical Society of Missouri is here on Show Me Today to help us better understand the Hmong experience and the impact Hmong communities have had on our state.

    It’s been a wetter-than-normal spring in Missouri.

University of Missouri Extension Entomologist Emily Althoff says a wet spring typically means more mosquitoes in the summer because of stagnant water. She reminds property owners to get rid of water in old tires or other places that tend to be ideal habitats for mosquitoes. She also says that of the dozens of mosquito species considered a “nuisance,” the threat of West Nile virus remains a serious health concern, and she has a thought about which state has the largest mosquitoes.
