  • Missouri Expert: Rainy Spring = More Mosquitoes

    It’s been a wetter-than-normal spring in Missouri.

University of Missouri Extension Entomologist Emily Althoff says a wet spring typically means more mosquitoes in the summer because of stagnant water. She reminds property owners to get rid of water in old tires or other places that tend to be ideal habitats for mosquitoes. She also says that of the dozens of mosquito species considered a “nuisance,” the threat of West Nile virus remains a serious health concern, and she has a thought about which state has the largest mosquitoes.

  • How the Good Roads Movement helped transform Missouri’s muddy rural routes into modern highways

Before highways crisscrossed Missouri and before most rural routes were paved, getting from one town to another could mean mud in spring, dust in summer, and a journey that might take hours longer than it should. That frustration helped spark a nationwide push known as the Good Roads Movement, a campaign that eventually reshaped transportation, agriculture, and even daily life in places like Missouri.
