There's an art event happening in just about every nook and cranny of this ancient city. There are new museum openings, exhibition launch parties, the Istanbul biennial and now perhaps the biggest art fair of the year, Contemporary Istanbul. Showcase's Nursena Tuter was at the opening to see for herself what the 2019 event had to offer.

He's been described as the man who changed the way the world looks at America. And he is sometimes even referred to as the 'Manet of the new photography'. Using an expressive and visually raw technique, Swiss-American photographer Robert Frank pioneered the art of capturing singular, unexpected moments and helped free photography from the confines of clean lighting and linear composition. He passed away this week at the age of 94.

Turkish artist Nur Kocak can easily be called a maverick. Rebelling against the strict rules of her academic training in the 1970s, Kocak insisted on making photorealist paintings at a time when no one else was. Even, at the risk of derailing her career. She is also a pioneer in presenting a feminist viewpoint to an art world that often overlooked or entirely disregarded female identity. But now, her colourful and striking vision is on display in a major retrospective in Istanbul. Showcase's Sena Arslan went to take a look.
