  • #736 Francis Weller on Grief and The Absence of The Ordinary

Francis Weller, MFT, is a psychotherapist, writer, and soul activist. He is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures, and poetic traditions. Author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief; The Threshold Between Loss and Revelation, (with Rashani Réa) and  In the Absence of the Ordinary: Essays in a Time of Uncertainty, he has introduced the healing work of ritual to thousands of people. He founded and directs WisdomBridge, an organization that offers educational programs that seek to integrate the wisdom from indigenous cultures with the insights and knowledge gathered from western poetic, psychological and spiritual traditions.

For thirty-eight years Francis has worked as a psychotherapist and developed a style he calls soul-centered psychotherapy. As a gifted therapist and teacher, he has been described as a jazz artist, improvising, and moving fluidly in and out of deep emotional territories with groups and individuals, bringing imagination and attention to places often held with judgment and shame. His latest offerings are a 10-session audio series on "Living a Soulful Life and Why It Matters." and "The Alchemy of Initiation: Soul Work and the Art of Ripening." He is currently completing his fourth book, A Trail on the Ground: The Geography of Soul.

  • #731 Music As A Path to Mindfulness with Therapist Simon Cole

Simon Cole is a psychological therapist with over 30 years experience and has worked in medical (NHS UK) and private settings in the UK, France and online.  He has worked with a very wide range of client difficulties, ages and backgrounds.  Almost 15 years ago he moved to France with his wife where they set up a retreat centre in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains.  Here they offer individual and group retreats and therapy, which incorporate mindfulness, meditation, creative therapies and walking.

He has written several books on meditation and mindfulness, the human experience, and relationship, and sees the insights of Martin Buber on human relating and existence as one of the foundation stones of his philosophy.

Having been a musician since childhood he brings musical elements - the form, the immediacy, the flow - into all his work, and makes it a theme which anyone can use.  He calls it “musicking” - with a “k”, but it needs no previous musical experience.  His latest book “just BE here - the guide to Musicking Mindfulness” explains: “The ‘k’ is there because it may be, but it doesn’t have to be about making music in the way we conventionally think of it in any of our various cultures."

  • #727 What Therapists Need To Know To Treat Substance Addiction with Betsy Byler M.A.

Betsy Byler, MA, LPC-SAS, ICS, LPCC decided when she was 16 to become a therapist. A difficult teenager she'd seen and fired therapists until she found a therapist that could get through to her. That experience inspired her to work with angry teenagers and work to give others that same experience of being really "heard."  Working with dual diagnosis clients has been a passion of hers since the early days of her career and she has spent the years since running outpatient mental health and substance abuse programs, in addition to training therapists to work in the dual diagnosis space.

She makes her home with her family in the woods of Northern Wisconsin. It's a very different scene than growing up in Chicagoland and she wouldn't have it any other way. In her work life, it was a difficult choice to leave agency life for private practice, but the time seemed right. The move into private practice and the following pandemic provided time to work on a new venture, the podcast. Betsy is passionate about bridging the gap between our training and the need for mental health therapists who know how to treat addiction. The podcast, All Things Substance, is the place for therapists to gain the information they need to treat substance abuse in addition to mental health.
