If you are new to our brand or our YouTube channel, you might assume I am just this guy that makes videos on failed companies. But no. Our company, Slidebean, actually, around 30 people, is a venture-funded startup. And our core business is not video, but presentation design.

Now, I don't want to jinx it, but we are on our way to 100,000 subscribers. It's a defining moment for our business, where YouTube is not only our primary source of customers for Slidebean, but the videos themselves, the ads, and the sponsorships we are getting are already a business of its own. We created a new, profitable business- that sells our other business. It's a marketing Nirvana!

This felt like the right time to reflect on this six-year journey- especially on the stuff that nobody told me about.

A phone that, for better or worse, had everyone's attention just by existing, just because it was created by one of the largest internet companies in the world: the Amazon Fire Phone

Now, of course, Amazon is not a phone company, but what is it exactly? It's a huge store, and it's likely where you get a lot of your stuff online, even groceries in some locations, probably even more now that people may be spending more time at home. But Amazon also provides web services to clients like Netflix, NASA, or Slidebean. Wink.

It's also a media streaming platform with its production studio for feature films and series, and it also acquired the largest video game streaming platform, Twitch, for around $1B, in 2014. But it also had its line of diapers.

So, what kind of company Amazon is? How do all these things connect? It sounds like a brand that aims for global market domination somehow, and seemingly with the Fire Phone, they had high hopes to create a product that would unify it all into a worldwide, fresh brand. Something like Apple or Nike, but for everything.

Segway: An overpriced mall cop ride

It was bound to happen, and it just happened. Last June, Segway's president, Ms. Judy Cai, announced that the company was utterly ceasing the Segway PT production, or as it was initially named, the Segway HT, for "Human Transporter." Some believed that it would revolutionize urban mobility, make the last-mile transportation more efficient, redesign cities, and other such high aspirations. But you know how this show usually goes. That glorified scooter that mall guards and tourists ended up rocking around some cities is officially on its road to extinction.
